From the day I walked in the door, the School

administration, faculty and staff made it clear that I

would be given the support, guidance and direction

I needed to succeed. The program is very demanding,

but Simon has built a supportive environment

that puts success within everyones reach. I was

particularly amazed by how responsive my professors

were to student input. One professor distributed

bimonthly feedback forms, and asked what lecturetopics did not make sense, and what he could do

to enhance our learning experience. By taking our

responses seriously, he formed a partnership with

students and everyone beneted. Simons also in a

great location. The cost of living in Rochester is very

reasonable, and there are always festivals and music/

    theater performances going on.

tion in the business systems practice o one o the major consult-

    ing frms.

Core Course:CIS/OMG 416. Strategy and Business Systems

    Consulting Practicum

The course focuses on three areas:

The Consulting IndustryStudents will examine several types o consulting (e.g.,strategic, operations, systems, human resource and marketing)and understand where the major consulting rms positionthemselves. The career paths or M.B.A.s entering theindustry, and the skills and values necessary or success as aconsultant will be scrutinized using in-depth case studies.

The Business Systems Consulting ProcessThe creation o proposals, the winning o consultingengagements and the preparation o contracts will be discussed.

The typical stages o a business systems consulting engagement(e.g., problem raming, analysis design, gathering data, interpreting results, architectural solution, and presentation orecommendations) and managing dierent sorts o consultingprojects (e.g., operational improvement, supply-chainoptimization, quality improvement, strategy ormulation and

    organization design) will be examined.

Consulting SkillsThe role o the consultant and the human dimension will bediscussed (e.g., personal attributes o consultants, relationship

building and team building). Diagnostic tools and data gathering

techniques (e.g., questionnaires and interviews) will bepresented. Frameworks or problem solving and communicatingrecommendations will also be introduced. The course examinesa wide range o modern global business challenges andopportunities rom both the consultants and the managersperspectives and provides a learning platorm to integrate and

practice the skills and knowledge learned.

The project component o the CourseIn addition, a major project helps students to improve theirconsulting skills through perorming an actual engagement. Theproject requires student teams to develop a client engagement

and perorm consulting services or that client.

Students Remarks About the Course. . . Working on a project gives me an opportunity to

apply not just consulting skills but all the things I

    learned at Simon . . .

    . . . I learned a lot about team dynamics, working

with clients and how to present . . .

. . . The project also opened my eyes to the

    importance o group work in consulting . . .

    . . . . . . I learned valuable analysis tools that are

    essential or successul consulting . . .

    . . . I have improved in all aspects o my working

style through the course o this project . . .

Abraham Seidmann, Ph.D.Xerox Proessor o Computers and

    Inormation Systems, Electronic

    Commerce, and Operations

    Management

The purpose o consulting work is to positively and

permanently improve the perormance o a clients rm

Consultants, thereore, have an impact! Consultants

work with, and learn rom, ar more senior executives

than they might at a typical corporation during the sa

number o years. Consultants develop proessionally as

they tackle numerous business problems and have the

opportunity to apply many o the sophisticated tools

acquired during their M.B.A. studies and beyond.

Consulting can be a highly lucrative career path

O all the start-up telecommunications companies

ormed ater 1997, PAETEC is one o the ew survivors.

The act that we are healthy and growing and have

over 3,500 employees today has everything to do withthe 71 original employees we hired to launch the

company. The Simon School is also part o the story,

because thats where I learned a lot about motivating

people. The eight o us who started PAETEC targeted

the top 75 people we wanted to hiremanagers,

technicians, accountants, people at all levels. We had

a small oce and white board listing their names in

red. We went through the interview process or 60 to 90

days, and used a lot o the things that I had learned at

Simon about getting people interested in starting a newventure. Instead o saying, This is what we want you

to do, we would ask questions like: What would you

include in the business plan? and How should wealth

be shared? We learned a lot rom these interviews,

and when someone signed our oer letter, we changed

his or her name on the board to green. We thought we

would end up getting maybe 1215 o the targeted

75 employees, but in the end, we got 71. As one o my

Simon proessors put it, Its all about how you set up

    the rules o the game.

I believe there is some conusion about the role o research in

a business school. Some argue that teaching and research

are substitutes, that a aculty that devotes time to research

has ewer resources to devote to teaching, that students

are disadvantaged by a program with a strong research

agenda. Given my experience over the past 25 years at

the University o Rochester, I must disagree. During my

career, teaching and research have always been strong

complements. For instance, a decade ago, the entire topic

o corporate hedging policy was absent rom nance texts.

Schools that are active contributors to nance research

have developed great skills in bringing this leading-edge

knowledge to the classroom. Academic research expands

the scope o knowledge and creates the core competence o

    business schools within management education.
