WE WALK BY FAITH Today St. Paul tells the Church of Corinth that we walk by faith and not by sight. What exactly does

he mean? We usually say that seeing is believing, but St Paul is telling us that our faith is what

should guide us along in our life. We know the promises of God. No matter how dreary a situation

may look or how hopeless things seem, when we have real faith we know that it all will work out

for the good.

DO YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE RIGHT?

Vacation season is upon us. Often as people start taking vacations, they also take vacation from God. Getting up to go to Mass is replaced

by getting up for the beach or park. You can find Catholic churches anywhere in the world. A simple phone call or visit to a website can

help you find a Mass close by and convenient – all it takes is a little planning. This summer make an effort to work God into your vaca-

tion schedule. After all you wouldn’t want him taking a vacation from you!

ST. PAULINUS OF NOLA June 22 we celebrate the feast day of St Paulinus of Nola. He was born to a wealthy family who was married and have a noble lifestyle.

After his son died he and his wife converted and gave away their money to the poor. They lived a life of prayer and austerity. He was

forced into becoming a Bishop of Nola, in Italy. He dedicated himself to helping the sick and the poor. In Williamsburg during the Feast

of Our Lady of Mt Carmel, there is a celebration commemorating when Paulinus offered himself to pirates in exchange for a grieving

woman’s son. His charity and self-sacrifice is an example to all of us.

DEDICATED TO OUR BLESSED MOTHER At the 10:15 Mass this weekend our parish is being consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Bishop Frank Caggiano, who is a son

of our parish, will be celebrating the special Mass. Let’s pray that the hearts of our parishioners become like the heart of our Blessed

Mother.

REGISTRATION It’s never too early to plan ahead. Registration for the 2018/19 school year will be on-going throughout the summer. We will be complet-

ing registration on Wednesdays from 3-8 PM. Please contact the office for information

THE CHURCH, MOTHER AND TEACHER

One of the greatest struggles we have as Catholics (and really

just as people/human beings in general) is submitting to a

higher authority. It’s easy to make Jesus the Lord of our Sun-

day mornings. It’s a lot harder to make him the Lord of our

life. Or, for many of us it may not be difficult to make Jesus

the Lord of our life, but we struggle when it comes to submit-

ting to the teachings of the Church.

I think the root of this struggle comes from focusing too much

on the human dimension of the Church and not enough on the

spiritual dimension. The Church is the body of Jesus here on

Earth, and speaks with the authority of God. Do we believe

that in our hearts? It can be hard, especially when we see the

brokenness in the people leading us. Because of the human

dimension of the church, she is filled with scandal. But if we

look at our history, even when we had the most corrupt and

broken people leading her, the teachings of the Church re-

mained true and God raised great saints to help guide her

through those moments.

In today’s world we see great waves of people rebel against

the Church. Some Catholics blame the Enlightenment, where

we saw a number of philosophers take a stand against the

church. Others, the Protestant Reformation, saying that it was

a slippery slope. Still others blame the cultural revolutions of

the 60s and 70s. Though these all certainly had their part to

play in the breakdown of our faith in church authority, I think

it boils down to something simpler: human nature. And people

have been rebelling against the church since it’s very founda-

tion.

None of us like being told what we can and can’t do. If given

an excuse (it’s a human institution, it’s outdated, etc.) we’ll

take it if it means we can do what we want, when we want.

The truth is that these excuses simply don’t hold up. We act

like we’re in this great age of freedom from church authority,

but the fact is people have always been making these excuses.

It’s nothing new, or “enlightened”. And through every attack

both internal and external the Church has survived, for not

even the “gates of hell” shall prevail against it.

At the end of the day, we either have to accept the Church is a

divine institution as much as it is human, and accept it’s teach-

ings which have been passed down for nearly two thousand

years, or we don’t. If we accept that Jesus Christ started the

Church and promised the Holy Spirit to guide it, then we have

to follow what the Church teaches. Even though this is diffi-

cult, we should rejoice in it. As I wrote a few weeks ago, G.K.

Chesterton once said that he didn’t need a religion to tell him

he was right and wrong where he already knew he was right

and wrong. He needed a religion to tell him where he was

wrong where he thought he was right. If only all of us could

have that level of humility and faith! And this isn’t a blind

acceptance of everything the Church teaches, but rather taking

it into ourselves and wrestling with it, seeking to understand

why the Church teaches what she does.

The Catechism speaks of adopting a filial spirit towards the

Church. This means that we ought to see ourselves as sons

and daughters of the Church. We look to the Church as we

would to a loving mother, at times maybe disappointed be-

cause we see her as an authoritarian figure telling us what we

can and can’t do, yet with the understanding that she is telling

it to us out of a deep love for us. When we approach the

church’s teachings with that understanding, it becomes easier

for us to accept. Though there is much brokenness to be found

at times within the hierarchy of the church, we are not obedi-

ent to the individual leaders but to the fullest aspect of the

church, trusting that at times there may be individuals who

lead us astray or fail in their call to love, when we look at the

whole picture we are given a full expression of love and the

life we are called to lead.
