EXECUTIVE BOARD DIRECTOR REPORTS __________________________________________________________________________________
PRESIDENT’SREPORT FrancesAtkinsonOnceagainithasbeenmypleasuretoserveasthePresidentoftheSFURetireesAssociationforthepastyear.Ourgoalsovertheyearhavebeentoprovidearangeofsocialopportunitiesforinteractionandcommunitybuildingamongfellowretirees,tokeepretireesinformedofkeytopics,andtoliaisewiththeuniversityonbehalfofretirees’concerns.
KeysocialeventsthisyearincludedtheannualSeptemberWelcomeBackLunchatTavernaGrekainNewWestminster,theFallDinnerattheItalianCulturalCentreinVancouver,aninformallunchinJanuaryatTheAdmiralinBurnaby,theIdesofMarchReceptionatSFUHarbourCentre,andtheAGMdinnerattheBurnabyMountainClubhouseRestaurant.TheBoardcontinuestoexploreusingavarietyofvenuesforoureventsandwerepleasedtoseeagoodmixofregularandnewattendeesatthisyear’sevents.
Ahighlightofthispastyearwascelebrationofthe20thanniversaryoftheformationoftheSFURetireesAssociation.Adedicatedteamofpeopleproducedanattractiveandcomprehensiveanniversarybookletforthisoccasion.EvelynPalmerplayedakeyleadershiproleindeterminingscope,content,timelines,andfindingmanycontributors,whilePercillaGroves(editor)andWalterPiovesan(layoutanddesign)didoutstandingjobs,asdidthemanycontributorswhosenamescanbefoundinthebookletavailablefromtheSFURAOffice.The20thanniversarywascelebratedattheFallDinner,duringwhichallformerBoardmemberswerehonoured.
AnotherhighlightthisyearwastheBoard’sdecisiontoproduceandperformanadaptedsegmentfromShakespeare'splayJuliusCaesarattheannualIdesofMarchReception,featuringMauriceGibbonsaswriteranddirectorparexcellence,AllenSeageras“BigJulie”facinghisbloodyendwithpanacheandconviction,andotherboardmembersartfullydeliveringtheirlines,allarrayedinRomantogas.PerhapsthemostnotableaspectofthisendeavourwasthatyourBoardprovedwearequitepreparedtomakefoolsofourselves!AttheIdesofMarchReceptionwepresentedourmemberswhoareatleast85yearsofagewithlifetimememberships.Wewerepleasedthatagoodnumberofourelderswereabletoattendinpersontoreceivethishonour.
ThisyeartheBoardofferedanotherinterestingseriesoftalksunderourSpeakersProgram,detailsofwhichareincludedinaseparateAGMreport.Inaddition,theSFURAFinancialInterestGroup(FIG),comprisingPhilipMah,TomO’Shea,andMarvWideen,organizedseminarsalsocoveredinaseparateAGMreport.Wewerepleasedthattwomembers,YasminJamalandTedCohn,organizedverysuccessfulsmallgrouptourstotheIsmailiaCentreinBurnabyandTempleShalominVancouverrespectively.TheBoardexpressesourthankstoallmemberswhoparticipateinorganizingevents.TwotopicstheBoardhearsaboutoftenfrommembersareinadequaciesinourextendedhealthbenefitsplan,andunderstandingtheintricaciesoftravelinsurance.RecentlywecreatedaBenefitsReviewCommitteethatwillsoonbegintoworkoncomparingourbenefitplanswithothersacrossCanada,seekinginputfromavarietyofsources,andcreatingapositionpapertoguidefuturenegotiations.Ifyouhaveskillsorinteresttocontributetothisinitiative,pleaseletmeknow.

RunningtheSFURetireesAssociationinvolvesalotofvolunteerwork.IwouldliketoextendsincerethankstoallBoardmembersandtothemanyothervolunteersforallyoureffortsthisyear.

DuringthepastyearontheSFURABoardIhavebeenoccupiedwithimprovingcommunications.Myfunctionalresponsibilitiesincludedthefollowingareasofresponsibilities:
InformationTechnology(IT)TheSFURAwebsitecontinuestoundergochanges,theeventscalendarhasbeenupdated.WehaveaddedaNewssectionforannouncingtime-sensitiveitemsofinterest.WehaverevampedtheBooksbyRetireessectionandwenowhaveanimprovedsectionofbookspublishedbyourRetireesandorganizedbyyear.Manychangesandadditionalpagesandsectionshavebeenadded.Thisisongoingasaprocessandsuggestionsforanyimprovementsarewelcomed.
OrganizationalDataBaseRalphKorterlingcontinuestomakeimprovementstoourcentralDataBaseandFileStoragesystemforSFURAactivitiesandmaterials.Thistoolhascreateda“corporaterecord”forourorganization.ThedatabasehasbeenenhancedtoallowastotrackLife-Timemembers,andtobettertrackspecialevents
PayPalPaymentsWecontinuetomakegooduseofPayPalasagatewaytoreceivingpaymentsforSFURAeventsandoutings.AnaddedfeatureisthatwecannowimportPayPaldatabyeventintoourOrganizationalDatabase
Newsletter–SimonSaysIserveastheProductionEditor,designeroftheNewsletter-editedbyourNewsletterEditor,MauriceGibbons.Iamtheliaisonforprintingthenewsletterandothermaterialsasneeded.ForexamplewehaveprintedanewSFURABrochure,whichIupdatedinthespringoflastyear.Iwasinvolvedindesigningthe20thAnniversarybookoftheSFURAwhichwaseditedbyPercillaE.Groves,andacopydepositedwiththeLibraryandArchivesCanada.
TheSFURAbook:“RememberingSFUontheOccasionofIts50thBirthday”.Wehavenowsoldover900booksandgivenawayabout150moretoboththeUniversityandthecontributorstothebook.WehavealsoconvertedtheBooktoanEpubversionforfutureneedsasadigitalbook.April30,2019__________________________________________________________________________________

Treasurer’sSummaryReport JayBurrTheSFURetiresAssociation,with$40,000inliquidassets,continuestobeinverygoodfinancialcondition.
Becausetheliquidassetsattheendofthe2019financialyeardecreasedby$3,500fromthe2018year-endamount,Ihaveinvestigatedpossiblecauses.Adjustingforlateduespaymentsthatfalloutsideeachfiscalyearloweredthedecreaseslightly(Notes3and1).Accountingforthisyear’smuchlowerincomefrombooksalesrevealedanactualunderlying6.4%increaseinliquidassets,independentofbooksales,overFY2018(Note1).Theamountofyearoveryearincreaseinliquidassetshasbecomesmalleroverthelast3years,andwewillcontinuetowatchthis.
Asubstantialpartofourannualincome($10,500)comesfromgrantsfromtheSFUPresident’sandVPFinance’sOffices.Weareveryappreciativeofthesebecausetheyhelpkeepduesandeventchargeslowforthemembership,supportourotherprojectsandhelpwiththesalaryofourpart-timeadministrativeassistant.Also,inFY2019,theVPExternalRelationscontributed$1,000toassistwiththecostofproducingSFURA’s20thAnniversaryBooklet.Thereareindicationsthatthenewbookthatweareworkingoncouldalsoattractadditionalsupportfromtheadministration.
MembershaveenjoyedourcustomarydinnersandreceptionsinFY2019(Note4).Thoughthenumberattendingwasup,ournetcostswerethesameasinFY2108.Otherevents(apartyinJanuary(“Where’sWalter”),aDayattheRaces,asoccergameandabaseballgame)werepaidfordirectlybytheattendees.

SECRETARY’SREPORT VariousBoardMembersDuringthepastfiscalyeartheExecutiveBoardofficiatedat12meetingsforwhichminuteswerekept includingtheMay2018AnnualGeneralMeetingandaMaySpecialMeetingtoelectofficersfromamongthenewly-electedBoardmembers.
Board meetings again were not scheduled for July and August resulting in 10 regular meetings of the Board.Except for theMay2018meeting (BurnabyMountainGolfCourse) and theMarch2019meeting (SFUHarbourCentre),thesemeetingstookplaceattheSFURAofficesinroomAQ3046ofSFU’sBurnabycampus.
Once approved, Boardminutes are retained as part of the permanent records of the SFURA and reside in thedatabaseestablishedbyRalphKortelingwhoremainsacapableanddedicatedresourceforthisundertaking.
ThispositionusuallycontinuestovolunteerasaproofreaderfortheSimonSaysnewsletterandforothereventsasneeded. Thispositionencompassesworkingwithmanyenthusiastic individualscommitted toadvancing thepurposesoftheSFURA.

PASTPRESIDENT’SREPORT JimBoydWearepleasedSFU’sPresidentAndrewPetterismoreandmoreresponsivetoourorganization’sactivities.Wehaveactivelyworkedatdevelopingthatimportantrelationship.SFUadministration’sfinancialsupportallowsustoemployourpart-timeAdministrativeassistant,AnnieYefor10hoursaweekfor10monthsoftheyear.
Ofcourse,asPastPresidentmymainroleistoassistthePresidentinhermanydutiesandtasks,oneofwhichisthecompilationofthisAnnualConsolidatedAGMReporttothemembersforpresentationonMay15,2019.
FrancesAtkinsonhasbeenexcellentinherroleasPresidentandsheisresponsiblefortheoutstandingrecordofyourretireeassociationinthepast24months.
IhavealsocontinuedtoresearchhowSFURAcanimproveExtendedHealthBenefits(EHB)andTravel insuranceprograms forour retirees. TheUniversity’sprograms forextendedhealth coveragehavebeen subsidizedonagrandfatheredbasisat50%ofthepremiumcostforallretireeswhowereoriginallyemployedpriorto2001.Morerecentemployeeshiredafterthatdatedonotreceiveasubsidyandsincesomearestartingtoretire,yourboardrealizesthattheremaybeaneedforanimprovedbenefitprogramforthemastheyretire.
SFURAhasmaintained itsown supplementaryprogramgroupedwithUBCandU.Victoria for the last20yearscalledMedocprovidedbyJohnsonInc.thatmakesadditionaloralternativecoverageavailabletoallSFUretirees(not just SFURA Members) for travel medical insurance. The College and University Retirees Associations ofCanada (CURAC), the umbrella organization of 39 post secondary retiree associations across Canada hascontractedwith the Retired Teachers ofOntario (RTO) for a programwhich offers a combined EHB and travelmedicalcoverageaswellastripcancellationinsurancecoverages.
AllSFURAmembersandotherSFUretireescanaccessthiscoveragedirectlythroughamembershiparrangementwithRTOand the informationhasbeenmadeavailableonourwebsite. JayBurr, SFURATreasurerandmyselfeachwroteanarticleontravelinsurancethatwaspublishedintheJanuary2019SFURAnewsletter.ThoseeffortswerefollowedupbybothofusbeinginvitedtopresentoureffortstotheApril242019FinancialInterestGroup(FIG)seminarattendedbyalmost50participantsandtheresultingtwoPowerPointpresentationshavenowbeenpostedtotheSFURAwebsiteat:http://www.sfu.ca/retirees/current-year/Travel_Insurance_Extended_Health_Benefits.html
IwillalsobecontinuingonastheCURACTreasurerforanothertwoyearsattheirAGMnextmonthwhichincludesrepresentingSFURAatitsupcomingconferencebeingheldinMayinGuelphOntario.
Last year I hosted the annual Tri-Universities Summit, a sponsored rotational event along with the UBC andVictoriaretireeassociationstosharebestpracticesbetweentheseus. ItwasheldonApril25th2018atourSFUWoskCentreforDialogueandwasaverysuccessfulevent.Astheorganizer/chairofthatmeeting,IinvitedthreeotherlocalpostsecondaryretireeassociationstojoinusasobserversincludingKwantlenPolytechnicUniversity,LangaraCollegeandDouglasCollege.Thisinitiativewaswellreceivedbyall17participants.
ImadetheinitialproposalforyourExecutiveBoardtocreateaspecial20thanniversarybookletin2018,our20thyearasaretireeorganizationalongthelinesofthe10thanniversaryonedonein2008andacommitteewassetupwithEvelynPalmerasthecoordinatorandMarvWideenandmyselfaspartofthatcommittee.
LastlyIampleasedtoreportthattheSFURA50thAnniversaryEndowmentfundsetupin2014hasbecomeverysuccessfulgrowingtheendowmenttoover$51,000toMarch31,2019afterhavingalsodistributedseven$1,000scholarshipstodeservingseniorundergraduatestudentsinthelastfouryears.PleasereviewtheSFUDevelopmentOfficereportattheendofthisdocumentintheAppendix. ThenewsletteroftheSFURA,SimonSays,isissuedthreetimesayearandisdesignedtokeepthemembersinformedabouttheactivitiesoftheAssociation,issuesthatconcernretirees,andothertopicsthatmaybeofinterestsuchasmembers’travel,research,andpublicationstheymayhaveproduced.TheNewslettercontinuestothrivebecausesomanypeoplecontributetoit.Ourreportersandcolumnistsareoutstanding
Thepublication isknownforthemanypeople involved inmaking itasuccess. WalterPiovesan istheassociateeditor and does the layout for the newsletter, and Ron Longmanages the photography. Several people writeregularfeaturesandsuchcolumnsasthefollowing:
The president, Francis Atkinson, writes a report about SFURA’s activities for each issue, andMarilyn Bowmanwrites aReflectionscolumn about personal issues related to aging. Evelyn Palmer writes the All About Youcolumnwith news aboutmembers’ travels andother activities. The FIG financial interest group--TomO’Shea,PhillipMah,andMarvWideen--writeaboutfinancialissues.
WewerefortunatetohaveJamesDean,ourprescienteconomist,sendinginhiseconomiccommentsonwhatishappeningaroundtheglobe,fromanywhereonthatglobe,andcommentsonwherehewascurrentlyplayinghissaxophone.Wedeeplyregrethisrecentpassing.
TomO’SheaistheSocialistwritingaboutwhatwecandoforfunandedification,whileParveenBawatellswhatwehadbetterdotohandlethestrugglesofaging,andJimBoydwritesaboutournationalpresenceinCURAC,thenationalbodyofretiredcollegeanduniversityemployees.ThecombinationbookreportsbySandraDjwa,DavidStouck,andJerryZasloveareespeciallystrongintheirreviews.
Currently,weareundertakinganewfeatureinitiative,sponsoringa$250.00prizeforthebestarticlepublishedinanyuniversityretirees’associationnewsletterinCanada.SimonSaysisfortunatethatFredFletcher,chairofthecommunicationcommitteeofCURACwillbeapartnerinthisnewventure.Thefallissuebeginswithaninterviewof SFUPresidentAndrewPetter byMarilyn Bowmanon the occasion of his being appointed amember of theOrderofCanada.Asthisreportmakesclear,theNewsletterbelongstoallofthemembersoftheSFURA.
This newsletter is alsowidely circulated among the other 38members of CURAC and other education-relatedorganizationsaswellasallSFUsenioradministrators,facultyandstaff.IthasgarneredgreatpraiseinthequalityandcontentofitsproductionandisratedtheverybestofanyothernewslettersproducedbytheothermembersofCURAC.Thepublicationhasgrowntoover20pagesinlengthwhichisanamazingincreaseoverthefewpagesoffouryearsago.
MuchofitssuccessisattributedalsotothetechnicalskillsappliedtoitbytheAssociateEditor,WalterPiovesanwhohasjustbeenselectedtoreceiveanationalTributeAwardfromCURAC.TheawardrecognizesWalter’sworkwithournewslettereditoronthelayoutandimagesofournewsletters.ThroughWalter’seffortswehaveaddedover20yearsofnewsletterstothewebsite.Seehttp://www.sfu.ca/retirees/newsletters.html.

ADMINISTRATIVEASSISTANTREPORT AnnieYeIhavepreparedthisreporttosummarizethetasksthatIhaveaccomplishedinthepastyear.1)MembershipProcedure:
The membership procedure represents a large portion of the Administrative Assistant’s work during themembershiprenewtime(February,MarchandApril).Themaintasksinclude:i)Collectingmembershipfees,withmostpaidbycheques,somepaidbycashwithareceiptisissuedforcashpayments.Recordingeachtransactionfortreasurer’sreference,ii)Recordeachmemberandcheckthemember’spersonalinformationonourDatabase;andiii)Prepareandsendoutthemembershipcards.Whenanewmembersignsup,werecordtheinformation,sendoffaNewMemberWelcomeemailandaddthemtoourtwoemailgroups,thenpreparetheMembershipCardandsenditoff.
The following isa reporton themembership status: Wehave331members inourAssociation in2018whichincluded284renewalmembers,4lifemembersand43neworrejoinedmembers.However,forsomereason,45membersdidn’trenewtheirmembership.Wehave260currentmembersasatApril30fora2019membershiptotal including34lifetimemembers(wehavedroppedthelifetimemembers’agerequirementsto85)whowillbe renewed automatically every year. The 2019 membership renewal procedure is continuing, and the finalnumberofrenewalsandnewmembersisexpectedtogoup.
2)SocialEvents:
Themainpurposeistoinitiateandorganizevariousspecialevents,generallyfourorfiveperyear,thatfostersocialinteractionsandconnectionsamongretirees.
Wehaveheldfourregularsocialeventsinthepastyear:i)IdesofMarch,ii)AGMwithdinner,iii)WelcomeBackLuncheon,andiv)FallDinner.Ihavebeeninvolvedinallfourevents,bycollectingmoney(chequesorcash),recordingtheregistrants,preparingtheattendees’nametagsandattendingtheevents.Forthemembers’convenience,weacceptedthepaymentonsite,whichrepresentedabigchallengeforme.
Specifictasksvarywitheachmajoreventandincludeensuringalldetailssuchasthevenue,cateringservices,specialguestsandequipmenthavebeenarranged.EacheventisfullypromotedwithwellpublicizedannouncementswithpersonalinvitationssenttothemembershipaswellasbeingpostedonSFURA’swebsite.SuggestionsareobtainedfromretireesandSFURA’sBoardofDirectorstoidentifyopportunitiesaroundwhichothermajorsocialactivitiesoreventscanbeprovidedInthefuture.Throughouttheyear,SFUretireesalsoparticipateinawidevarietyofothersocialactivitiessponsoredbySFURA.ThefollowingmajoreventswereorganizedanddeliveredduringtheyearwithclericalandtechnicalassistanceprovidedbyothermembersontheBoard:

Forthefallof2018andSpringof2019atotalof6presentationswereorganized.Generally,agroupof20to30attended.FiveoftheeventswereattheBurnabycampusandoneatHarbourCentre.ThreepresenterswereSFUretirees,twowerecommunityexpertsandonewasanSFUfaculty.
GivenaricherprogramofeventsbeingofferedbySFURA,attendanceatthesepresentationshasfallen.ForFall2019andSpring2020presentationswillbereducedtoonepersemester.
Fall2018-threepresentationsattheBurnabyCampusSeptember18,2018TheB.C.ReferendumonProportionalRepresentationbyDaveHuntleyThesystemwehaveusedbothforprovincialandfederalelections(withoccasionalexceptions)wasinheritedfromBritain.TheonlycountriesthatuseitareremnantsoftheBritishEmpire.Thereareothersystems.Dotheyresultinbettersocietieandwhatdoesbettermean?Thatiswhatthereferendumisabout.
October16,2018TheAmazinggameparksofNamibiaandBotswanaandmorebyRonLongThistalkincludedpointsofnaturalandhumanhistoryinterestthroughoutNamibia,includingthehighestsanddunesintheworldandtheghosttownofKolman'sKop.
November20,2018OurLadyoftheSnows:RudyardKipling’sImperialistVisionofCanadabyJackLittleRudyardKipling’stravelnarrativesandhispersonalcorrespondencedescribetheCanadianlandscapeandpeopleasrecordedduringhisthreecross-countryjourneys.HisvisionofthewesternprovincesasanoutletforBritishemigration,andtheroleheplayedinencouragingCanada’sparticipationinBritain’swars.

TaxinLifeandDeath–KeepingtaxesawayfromyoursavingsandpassingonwealththroughEstatePlanning.PresentedbyAhsenAnsari,InvestmentAdvisor(RBCDominionSecurities);ChristineLowe,Lawyer(RichardBuellSuttonLLP);andHussainHaji,SeniorManager(RiseCPA).ThisseminarwasamodifiedrepeatofaseminaroriginallypresentedinNovember2017.Anumberofretireescouldnotattendthatsessionduetolackofseatingcapacity.Approximately20retireesandpre-retireesattendedthis2018session.AlightlunchandbeverageswereprovidedcourtesyofRBCDominionSecurities.AfterthespeakerscompletedtheirpresentationstheQ&Asessionwasfilledwithmanyrelevantquestionsandresourcefulanswers.PowerPointpresentationsbythethreespeakershavebeenmountedontheSFURAwebsite.
InJanuary,theFIGcommitteesentoutarequesttoSFURAmembersforsuggestionsregardingfutureseminars.Wereceivedfiveresponses,severalofwhichcommentedthatweshouldreducethenumberof“commercial”presentations.Asaresult,wedeterminedtodrawonourownmembershipand,asluckwouldhaveit,ourSpringnewslettercontainedtwoexcellentarticlesonhealthandtravelinsurancebyJimBoydandJayBurr.Weprevailedonthemandtheypresentedthefollowingseminar:
