Russian Pingvin Suit

A useful attempt at reducing the deleterious effect on bone/muscle.

Expedition 4 crewmembers Walz, Onufrienko and Bursch

Prophylactic body-loading suit for bone and muscle.

Exterior of the suit is made of synthetic fabric with elastic bungee chords and a leather belt located around the waist.

Imposes axial compression in two stages: upper body (shoulders pulled towards belt), and lower body (waist pulled towards feet) using a tight leather belt.

At times hot, uncomfortable and becomes smelly.

Therefore worn sporadically (bungees sometimes cut!).

Effectiveness difficult to quantify.

Gz Load (N) GLCS

GLS Easily fabricated for Lunar and Martian environmentsGLCS Loading Regime

Gravity Loading Countermeasure Skinsuit (GLCS) - Skinsuit

Spandex woven so that its relaxed form is short and thin. When stretched out width ways (as occurs when worn) the vertical return force increases.

No arms helps with thermal regulation

Skin compression has been measured and is no more than typically seen for a pair of socks

Gravity Loading Countermeasure Skinsuit (GLCS) - Skinsuit

Sleep use of Skinsuit to measure any reductions in stature elongation

Foot forces whilst wearing Skinsuit

And 4. Worn how often and during what activities

- Sleep use requires less Gz (or pressure spots occur)13

Current multidisciplinary support for HSF From a European Space Agency Space Medicine Office perspective;

Significant communication is occcurs between disciplines.Easy access to subject experts is facilitated.Processes and procedures are produced to act as guidelines for the multiple disciplines to follow.

Planned multidisciplinary support for HSF From a Blue Abyss perspective we will;Ensure that all of the necessary skills and experiences needed for human spaceflight related enterprise are present people tend to think all the answers are in own discipline!Identify and provide vital hardware and services, not normally accessible, which is deemed a necessity by involved disciplines.Ensure that subject knowledgeable staff are at hand to enable topic specific activities to be pursued.Ensure that managers with multidisciplinary backgrounds are available to coordinate multidisciplinary projects.

Multidisciplinary R&D for HSF - Learning from the Apollo experience!

Engineering principles can be applied to the human body with effect to the centreline which immediately provides a visual verification of human posture and its deviation. Referred to as visio-prediagnostics.Work as a team - multiple disciplines can integrate effectively if led well and if all understand the mission goals.Every discipline sees a different path to the achievement of a given goal. Understand where these paths must meet to ensure the integration necessary for success. Most people simply see what they see and accept the input as it is. But if you understand what and why you see what you see ...then you understand its nature this enables you to perceive! This depth of understanding imprints knowledge on the mind!
