House fires devastate Tulameen
Andrea DeMeerSpotlight Staff
Bairy Marchuk planned to spend the weekend with his wife moving beds and furniture into the just-completed addi-tion to their vacation home in Tulameen.
Instead, he made the drive from Chilliwack Saturday intent on sorting through the rubble left behind by a fire that completely destroyed his cabin, along with another Tulameen residence, Tuesday.
“It’s mind numbing,” he said in an interview with The Spotlight. “You don’t really understand what happened. You don’t fully comprehend it and you think it’s all just a dream or a nightmare.”
There were only three of twenty volunteer firefighters in Tulameen when the George Street blaze broke out about 9:45 a.m. Chief Jody Woodford was working in the fire hall – just one block from where the fire started – when she received the call.
“When I pulled up on the scene I screamed for help,” she said. “Anybody who showed up on the scene I put to work. The community worked together to control it so it didn’t get any bigger….It showed the community can get together and do what needs to be done.”
Woodford said residents worked side by side with volun-teer firefighters from Tulameen and Princeton, RCMP and paramedics to control the fire. Residents donated portable water tanks and shuttled water from stand pipes to the scene. Through out the day approximately 40 people had a hand in “saving that part of the community,” she said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to Woodford. It started in one structure on George Street, and due to winds and radiant heat exposure it spread to Marchuk’s home. A third home also received damages.
“We hit the fire as hard and fast as we could but water would only last for five minutes and then we would have to wait for more water.”
There is no official estimate yet on damages, although Marchuk puts his own losses at approximately $350,000.
His family purchased the home in 2002, and had just finished an expansion project that added three bedrooms, two bathrooms and extra living space. “It was 99.9 per cent complete.”
He said there was “tonnes of stuff” lost that his family con-siders irreplaceable. “It brings a tear to my eye….there’s lots of stuff you know, my wife’s dad’s snowshoes from when he was stationed up north in the armed forces, and a pair of skis and gifts. It just goes on and on.”
Marchuk said he plans to rebuild and will even “take a couple of rails off that weren’t totally destroyed so that we can incorporate them in the new place.”
He had nothing but praise for the Tulameen fire depart-ment. “The fire department in that little community just did an awesome job. They were apologizing for not being able to save it but what can you do?”

The Similkameen Spotlight received recognition this month from both the provincial and national newspaper associations, for editorial excellence.
Margaret Fraser, a Spotlight freelancer, was awarded third place in the British Columbia and Yukon Community Newspapers Association awards in the Spot News Photo category for her dramatic front page photo of the wildfire that threatened the town last September.
Fraser proved that talent, along with being in the right place at the right time, are what’s needed to cover news when she captured a close up shot of the 182 hectare fire that included a water-bomber at work to control the blaze.
Spotlight publisher Andrea DeMeer was also honored recently with a third place finish in the Outstanding Columnist category from the Canadian Community Newspapers Association. Old Dog, New Tricks is published weekly in the Spotlight and the Keremeos Review.

Spotlight StaffPrinceton residents will see a
5.7% increase in their community tax bills this year .
The average residential tax bill climbs $30.08 to $527.13.
Councilor Jerome Tjerkstra, who heads up the community’s economic development portfo-lio, said that despite the residen-tial increase “we’re still lower than most small towns,” when it comes to residential taxes.
“We are keenly aware that there are citizens in Princeton who are on a fixed income and we want to be sensitive to that,” he said in an interview with The Spotlight.
“On the other hand the costs
and responsibilities of munici-palities continue to increase and so for this year we agreed that this was the most fair approach that we could do.”
The largest payout from Princeton’s $5.1 million budget in 2015 is capital expenditures that account for $1 million. The largest of those projects is the installation of an elevator in the municipal hall, to make the facil-ity fully accessible, at a cost of $250,000. The elevator will be paid for by a provincial grant.
The capital budget also includes $207,500 for improve-ments to water infrastructure, $185,000 for sewer upgrades, $125,000 for road rehabilitation
and $60,000 to supply the munici-pality’s industrial park with natu-ral gas.
The arena will get a new sound system at a cost of $35,000, and Memorial Park will receive $15,000 to renew the ball fields and upgrade the washrooms.
The town has also budgeted $12,000 to install playground equipment at Tunnel Park, $25,200 for a landfill cattle guard, $75,000 for the new visitor’s cen-tre, $25,000 for a new website, and $10,000 each for improve-ments to the airport’s fuel system and the compilation of a commu-nity profile.

Spotlight StaffA head-on collision on
Highway 3 sent three people to hospital Saturday morning.
The collision involving a mini-van and a pickup truck occurred around 7:40 a.m. about a kilome-tre west of Hedley.
RCMP Sgt. Barry Kennedy from the Princeton detachment said the initial investigation has revealed the driver of the minivan fell asleep behind the wheel.
“Minivan crossed the double solid line and hit the pickup truck head on,” he said.
The van, which was travelling west at the time of the collision, then veered out of control and went down an embankment on the south side of the highway.
The occupants in both the van and the truck had to be extract-ed from their vehicles. Hedley, Princeton and Keremeos rescue workers attended the scene.
The driver of the van suffered serious injuries including bro-ken bones and internal bleeding, Kennedy said. The driver was air-lifted to Kelowna hospital where he remains.
Kennedy was unsure of the driver’s health status at the time of the interview.
The driver and passenger of the pickup truck were taken to Penticton hospital with minor injuries. The driver stayed over-
night in hospital for monitoring. It had been raining and light
snow had occurred just before the collision but road conditions were good, Kennedy said. He reminded motorists to use caution especially in the early hours and
throughout the night.
“Although summer has arrived the overnight temperatures drop below zero and the roads become slippery and icy and bad condi-tions can still exist,” he said.
Serious injuries in Hwy 3 crash
Mark BrettThe driver of a mini van that collided head on with a pick up truck Saturday on Hwy 3 fell asleep at the wheel, according to RCMP.

The Vancouver media’s frantic coverage of the Great Bunker Spill of 2015 has just about run out of fuel.
By late last week, the usually serious Globe and Mail was reduced to quizzing a U.S. expert who had at first told the CBC he thought the spill response was pretty good. But then he heard that it might have taken up to 12 hours until the leaking grain ship was completely under control, which would be not so good.
This U.S. expert admitted he has not “fol-lowed the Vancouver spill very closely,” and was basically speculating. But that’s OK, because the main purpose of this media frenzy is to feed the established narrative that the Harper government is gutting the Coast Guard while trying to ramp up heavy oil ship-ments to Asia.
Yeah, that makes sense. A University of Toronto philosophy prof recently suggested that Stephen Harper likes war. Maybe he likes oil spills too.
A retired captain from the now-closed Kitsilano Coast Guard station became the latest of a series of disgruntled ex-employees and union bosses to serve as the media’s go-to critics. He contra-dicted Coast Guard management at every turn, dismissing them as political appointees with little operational experience.
His claims about loss of spill response capability from Kitsilano are questionable at best. There was no talk of spill response when Kitsilano closed two years ago, because it was a search and rescue station.
Former B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair held almost daily news conferences as it closed. People are going to drown, warned a parade of union spokespeople.
It’s been two years, and nobody has.Premier Christy Clark and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson
were quick to summon TV cameras as oil-sheen angst spread through condo towers. They declared the Coast Guard response a failure before they had any real understanding of it.
Unifor, the union representing Coast Guard employees, has vowed a full-scale election adver-tising attack on the Conservatives this year. On federal budget day, Unifor protested the closure of the Ucluelet Coast Guard ship monitoring sta-tion. Similar stations in Vancouver and Comox are also closing this year, replaced by a new monitoring system run from Prince Rupert and Victoria.
I asked Industry Minister James Moore, the federal minister responsible for B.C., if this is a reduction in service. He said 1970s-era ship tracking equipment is being replaced with a new system that has already been deployed on the East Coast, to improve safety.
“These fears were also raised back in the ’60s and ’70s, when lighthouses were de-staffed,” Moore said. “I remember people saying, oh my God, this is going to be the end. And it turned out to be complete nonsense.”
Unifor operatives rushed to the media again last week with dire news of a half-hour outage of this new system, portraying this as evidence of a high-tech disaster waiting to happen. (Ships were told to monitor an old-school emergency radio channel for that uneventful half hour.)
What the union is really doing is ramping up its election propa-ganda, and intensifying efforts to protect redundant positions that are being replaced by new technology.
There was a similar media campaign last year targeting the consolidation of Veterans’ Affairs into Service Canada offices. There are serious problems with services to veterans, but union featherbedding would not help them.
The B.C. government is also introducing digital technology, eliminating hundreds of paper-pushing jobs in the process, with a mostly realistic response from unions.
But in this federal election year, realism will be in short supply.Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black

At first blush a presentation to town council about health care in the Okanagan Valley has little to do with the “great trail debate” raging over whether or not to ban motorized vehicles along the KVR in town limits.
However when former councilor Marilyn Harkness appealed to councilors last week, and asked them to always consider the health of Princeton residents when passing laws and making decisions for the community, a connection became apparent.
The Healthy Communities Initiative, which Harkness represents as a volunteer, targets physical activity, healthy eating, healthy built environments and priority populations as key factors in sustaining health in BC’s interior.
Given that Princeton has a higher-than average senior’s population, and that there are limited opportu-nities here for exercise and recreation, the importance of the KVR for walking, cycling, and quiet reflection takes on new meaning.
Consider that Princeton has one of the province’s highest rates of depression and anxiety, and through out the Interior residents experience higher than average rates of other chronic diseases such as asthma, COPD, diabetes and heart failure.
Just a place to go for a stroll – to literally improve and foster mobility – should be a key part of a com-munity’s focus of prevention and health promotion and could lead to better, more rewarding and even longer lives for Princeton residents.
Arguments for continuing to permit ATVs and motorbikes on the in-town portion of the trail are not without merit, but should not be swallowed at face value.
There’s been no proof brought forward that indi-cates the riders of ATVs and motorbikes contribute significantly to tourism spending in Princeton. It’s not as if these vehicles are equipped with shopping baskets. Additionally there is anecdotal evidence – just look on line at some of the “reviews” of Princeton from European travellers – that motorized traffic on the KVR is actually a detriment to attracting visitors.
People in Princeton who rely on the KVR for daily exercise complain that ATVs and motorbikes leave the trail in poor repair, making it difficult in places to navigate on foot or with a bicycle.
While new provincial rules requiring registration and plating for all ATVs may make it easier to catch riders who misuse the trail they simply do not address the fact that the ATVS are there in the first place – cre-ating noise and risk either real or imagined.
Recreational motorized vehicle riders have other options including a whole province of logging roads and crown land.
Princeton may indeed be a lovely playground for residents in Area H communities and part-time resi-dents from the coast.
But let’s not forget that people actually live here. - AD
The trail means health
On the subject of keeping Princeton healthy and beautiful for residents AND visitors – mark you calendars for this Sunday, May 3, for a community-wide clean up.
Everyone is welcome to meet at the Arena at 11 a.m., and the town is providing bags, gloves and other clean up equipment.
You don’t have to register, just show up and donate three hours of your time and put the shine on Princeton!
Make Princeton shine
Similkameen Spotlight Wednesday, April 29, 2015 www.similkameenspotlight.com A5NEWS
The Urban Dictionary defines it this way:Loser – n. A person who has fallen off
the social ladder, climbed down the social ladder, jumped off the social ladder, or just never bothered to climb the social ladder in the first place. Upon arrival on the ground, losers begin to befriend fellow groundlings and realize how much fun a person can have when gravity isn’t an issue. It is perfectly acceptable to insult losers, because they have nowhere to fall to and it won’t hurt much. They will end up laughing about it later, any-ways. Every now and then, a loser will glance at the top of the social ladder, but it is never long before they realize how pointless and stupid the top of the ladder is.
That is a great new take on an old word. I am more of a traditional, albeit first rate loser. I lose things.
Mostly I lose keys, but also bank cards and cellphones - thank you, ladies at the Valley First Credit Union for the prompt return of the iPhone last week - and once I lost the car.
(The good thing about losing the car is that the keys are irrelevant. It was humiliat-ing though, standing in that security guard’s
grimy little office filling out a report because I was positive the car was stolen – wandered around that parking lot in dazed circles for close to an hour. When the clouds cleared sud-denly and revealed to my mind the car was actually parked at a different building there was no graceful way out of the situa-tion. LOSER.)
Several years ago I worked with a beautiful woman, Kim Wettlaufer. Her title was office manager and executive assistant but she might well have been called “Finder.”
Kim had the situation’s measure on day one. She passed over the keys to the pub-lisher’s office door. Then she held up a spare key and promised she would keep it in the top drawer of her desk, downstairs, in case it was ever needed. Finally she held up a third key and said she was keeping it in a safe place and to call her when the first two keys went missing.
It is a credit to Kim’s organization abil-
ity that we only had to phone a locksmith once in five years.
There’s a bit of Kim’s help-ful brilliance in the Spotlight’s Tammy Hartfield. Tammy hides the mailbox key, and last week in Keremeos when I couldn’t find the keys to Mr. DeMeer’s truck she called both the drug store and the grocery store checking to see if anyone had turned them in.
Losing keys in a newspaper office has a special sound– the
rapid thwacking of stacks of notebooks, press release and reports as if someone is trying to squash a mole that is darting from side to side on the desk.
Well, here are your keys. Tammy held up a recognizable football-sized key chain. (There’s an unproven theory that the bigger they are, the harder they are to lose.)
No. No. No. I had Mr. DeMeer’s truck and Mr. DeMeer’s keys and he was going to KILL ME. He would never let me live it down.
Nearly thirty years ago I lost an antique cigarette lighter that belonged to my hus-band-to-be. It might have been worth $20 at a yard sale but it was a gift from his father and it was special to him and I put it in my desk at school and someone stole it. (Story. Sticking to it.)
Do you know the last time I had to hear about losing that antique lighter?
Monday. Last Monday. Mr. DeMeer never loses things and he
never forgets. We scoured the office of the Keremeos
Review all afternoon. Having given up hope and staring dejectedly at my large and useless key chain I saw the light, and the truck key.
Mr. DeMeer – like Kim and Tammy – had planned well. Knowing full well what was likely to happen he took the truck key off his chain, put it on mine, and hoped for the best.
Sometimes it’s not comfortable here on the ground, looking up at the top of the lad-der at people who know you so well, and who can always find their keys.

livingsignificantly.caKim English of Hedley has visited Europe
approximately 15 times. She has done vol-unteer work in Tanzania and lived in a mud hut on Mt. Kilimanjaro. In Vancouver she successfully sold art at the Inuit Gallery. Six years ago she arrived in Hedley to visit a friend and stay “just for the summer.”
When I asked what had prompted her to make this little community her home she said, “I didn’t realize at that time my nephew Jordan would be coming to live with me. He was having significant behavioural challeng-es in his home and at school. I thought the slower pace and quiet of Hedley would have a calming effect. He’s the reason I stayed.”
During the time Jordan lived with Kim, we had opportunities to observe some of her interactions with him. Not having children of her own, it must have been a steep learn-ing curve. What impressed us most was her total commitment to this youth who was bringing turmoil into her life. She spoke to him patiently but firmly. At times we were surprised at her understanding. Observing her in this relationship has led us to believe that her endeavours in the Similkameen com-munity come from a basis of commitment to the people.
Kim came with little except some pretty decent furniture and a willingness to do virtu-
ally anything to survive financially. She was single and after a failed relationship, had no interest in men. Also, in the city she had used public transit so she didn’t have a Driver’s Licence or a vehicle. She found a home to rent and began building a new life. She had ideas and a desire to make a positive differ-ence. Initially she worked as a waitress at the Hitching Post Restaurant and also did prun-ing in a vineyard. A lot has changed since that early beginning.
One of the constants in Kim’s life since 1989 has been a friendship with Angelique Wood. As a student in Classical Studies at Langara College and then majoring in archaeology at SFU, she leaned on Angelique for help. “I had some dyslexia issues, par-ticularly a problem with jumbling words,” she said. “Before I handed in papers, I asked Angelique to proof read them.”
In Hedley they have developed a collab-orative partnership. While Angelique was an RDOS Director, they attracted a number of Similkameen community leaders to Hedley for “Community Conversations.” Their goal was to inspire creative approaches to com-munity issues.
“One of the challenges for small, out of the way communities like Hedley,” she said, “is that seniors are moving to larger centres to get the services they need. They can’t man-age on their own. That’s why we brought in a
couple of speakers from Keremeos to explain Meals on Wheels. We don’t want to lose the wisdom and experience of seniors.”
She is also concerned that few families move to Hedley. “We need to make it pos-sible for them to buy a home,” she believes. “One way of doing this would be to establish
a Land Trust. We’ve had productive conver-sations with Michael Lewis, an expert in the field. The trust concept has been proven to be a viable approach in a number of places. We need people to live in the homes that are now empty. We need them to participate in the community. I believe they will come if there are attractive options. We’ll have to be creative to make this happen.”
Recently Kim has ventured into the realm of politics, supporting her friend Angelique who is the NDP candidate for the local rid-ing. She is a member of the Election Planning Committee and a volunteer coordinator for the riding’s southern section.
I said earlier that a number of things have changed for Kim. She now has a Driver’s Licence and owns a shiny, nearly new 4x4 pickup. She has also bought a home and for a time had chickens in her back yard. Probably most exciting, she met Andy English when they were both members of the Hedley Fire Department. They are now happily married.
There is a further very positive develop-ment. When Jordan visited Kim and Andy recently, I spoke with him briefly. His growth in confidence and maturity is impressive, even delightful.
Kim’s commitment to fostering change in her family and her community is producing positive results.

has sent $160,000 to the Town of Princeton to cover some of the cost of the slide correction effort along Similkameen Avenue. The slide, which began moving last month, was slipping from behind Princeton Mohawk and settling in the area of the north side of Similkameen Avenue. Efforts to stop the slide involved drilling four wells to relieve water pressure believed to be the cause of the movement.

Council considers break from regional library system
Andrea DeMeerSpotlight Staff
The only certainty to arise out of a pub-lic meeting last week to discuss the future of Princeton’s library is that local residents are not going to give up any library ser-vices without a fight.
Several options for addressing the library’s budget shortfall were thrashed out, including the possibility of breaking with the Okanagan Regional Library and operating an independent facility.
“Honestly we are in the process of a study,” Mayor Frank Armitage told the meeting. “We are so close to being able to do that and make it work.”
It was standing room only in the library as fifty people turned out to hear a presenta-tion from the Okanagan Regional Library. Staff shared a plan to reduce library hours from 20 to 15. The proposal is designed to shave $17,000 off the cost of operating the library each year.
While comments from the floor about an independent library reflected mixed feelings, residents were definitely on the same page when it came to opposing cuts to hours.
One library patron drew applause when she said if hours at the library are reduced
any further “we might as well close the doors and make it a mausoleum to library service.”
Stephanie Hall, ORL CEO, told the group that unless more funding can be secured for the library the service cuts are non-negotiable.
“Doing nothing is not an option.” The new proposed hours for the library
are Tuesday and Thursday from noon until 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Hall explained that while Princeton resi-dents pay $108,427 in library taxes, they receive services valued at $169,664 “and it really isn’t fair…Our board is committed to fairness to all communities.”
The direct cost of operating the Princeton library is $110,245, while $59,418 is appor-tioned to the ORL for shared costs.
Hall described the Princeton library as “a busy and well used branch” with 1357 members. “Its difficult to talk to Princeton about reducing hours and reducing staff,” she said. “It’s not our goal to decrease service.”
When questioned about possible future changes to service levels she could not offer any guarantees. “There is a chance you could lose on that or you could gain.”
Hall said town council has the option of maintaining the library’s current service levels by topping up the operating budget by $17,000 or $6 per capita. “That’s a tough sell because communities are facing massive infrastructure challenges. They are having to decide between roads and libraries.”
Princeton is the only library in the ORL that does not receive library tax support from the outlying region. Several Area H residents spoke at the meeting and two of them suggested taxpayers there might be willing to pay a reduced library fee to sup-port the service.
Hall said for some communities “it might make sense” to operate a library independently. “We would hate to lose Princeton though. You’d still be getting a good deal with the ORL.
Councillor Rosemary Doughty, who represents Princeton on the ORL, described the library as “an essential service to this community. It’s not just books it’s the social value of this….The mayor and coun-cil are taking a leadership role. I want people to know that we are involved and we are working on it.”
Andrea DeMeerThe Princeton Library was founded 48 years ago when organizers literally went door-to-door collecting books. The first library was located above the post office and volunteers kept it open five days a week. Joann Gabriel and Joan Kelly are two of the library’s founders, and they were on hand Tuesday night for a meeting to discuss the library’s future.
To the editorI have been reading, with
interest, the ATV issues in Princeton. It seems to me that Mayor Armitage and city coun-cil may really try to accom-modate all outdoor enthusi-asts including the ATV riders. However time will tell.
I find it hard to believe that elected officials would let their personal attitudes affect carry-ing out their duties by making restrictive bylaws.
Last year my spouse and I spent six weeks travelling across Canada. We watched where the Cross Canada Trail stopped and started, shared highways in places, went
through towns and cities and disappeared completely in places. We read signage that welcomed ATV’s but not one of them banned ATV’s. Cars, trucks and ATV’s all together filling up with gas at service stations was a common sight. Many towns and even cities had ATV’s on roads and streets with speed limits under 50 km.
There are many places where ATV’s are legal on roads and streets. For an ATV to share a road it must be regis-tered, licensed, insured, have tail lights, brake lights, license plate light, a rear view mir-ror and a horn. Signal lights and a whip antenna are also
sometimes required. These towns all share a kind of fron-tier rural atmosphere. I’m sure that Princeton is not ready for this yet!
British Columbia is one of the last places in North America to license and register ATV’s. We are now in the 21st century perhaps Princeton will be there too.
There are insurance compa-nies that will cover motorized liability on the KVR if our city, Princeton, needs one so that should not be an issue.
Also signage limiting speed and noise and stating courtesy rules would go a long way to ease concerns of residents.
A key concern would be to find some way to limit trav-el for those who would ride through Princeton with a pos-sible place to stop and shop, as opposed to those joy riders who repeatedly would ride back and forth solely on the Princeton portion of the KVR.
Strict fines for nuisance riders should be posted and enforced.
Come on Princeton...let’s be progressive, take up the chal-lenge, and give it a try for a couple of years. If it doesn’t work you can always change it.

Well you don’t see one of these every day. This badger was photographed last week at Wayne Lake by Spotlight freelancer Margaret Fraser, who was recently the recipient of a British Columbia and Yukon Newspaper Award for her spot news photo of a fire near Princeton last September. Badgers are endangered in BC, with only 200 of the breeding animals recorded.
Jackie Tegart, MLA, Fraser-Nicola As summer gets closer, those who travel our highways will begin to see more
road improvement projects throughout Fraser-Nicola.These are all part of B.C. on the Move, our government’s 10-year plan for the
improvement of our province’s transportation network.Nobody enjoys having their drive interrupted by delays for road-construction
crews, but B.C. is no different than anyplace else: most of this kind of work has to be done when the weather is best, and that means late spring, summer and early fall – the prime driving season.
There are several projects in our riding that are either underway, nearing construction or at the tender phase.
Of great interest to everybody in and around Princeton, 5.3 kilometres of Highway 3 from Sunday Summit to Sunday Creek will be widened and realigned to straighten curves and improve sightlines, including four kilometres of new climbing lanes. This federal-provincial project is expected to be com-pleted in the fall of 2017.
Also near Princeton, Highway 3 will be upgraded to three lanes at Saturday Creek, including 2.5-metre paved shoulders, with an estimated completion in fall 2016.
Elsewhere in the riding:• On the Coquihalla Highway near Merritt, a Variable Speed Limit
System will be installed at Ottomite Bridge (Portia Interchange to the former toll plaza). The system includes message signs, road weather information system stations, web cameras, pavement condition and temperature sensors, visibility sensors and variable speed limit signage. Completion is scheduled for next win-ter.
• Near Ashcroft, a 6.1-km section of Highway 1 from the Ashcroft four-lane to the junction of Highway 97C will be resurfaced.
• On Highway 1, the Walhachin Bridge re-decking project, to be com-pleted this spring, will return the bridge to full load capacity.

Welcome to the hilarity of 18th century Italian romance
Review by Andrea DeMeerSpotlight Staff
Try to imagine an episode of the 1970s sitcom Three’s Company set in 18th century Italy.
That’s what you will be reminded of, when you watch A Servant of Two Masters presented later this week by The Crimson Tine Players at Riverside Theatre.
“It’s a play I’m sure nobody in Princeton has seen before,” said director Rhianfa Riel, when discussing script choice. “We want people to come out and see something fresh.”
Riel has directed A Servant of Two Masters in the past, and said she was drawn again to the production because of the opportunity it offers young Princeton actor Bobby Gibb in the role of Truffaldino Battochio.
With a confident swagger and a fine sense of comedic timing, Gibb brings an endearing “Jack Tripper” quality to the part, particularly in scenes with his love interest Smeraldina, played ably by Isabella Brodie.
The play opens in the Venetian house of Pantalone, where the host is agreeing to the marriage of his daughter Clarice to Silvo, son of Doctor Lombardi. Victoria Gibb and Dayton Wales play Clarice and Silvo, and they are well cast as simpering paramours. Appearing as fathers of the affianced couple Shawn Cavanagh and Dick Bird lend strength to the ensem-ble.
The chaos begins when Truffaldino arrives to introduce his master, Federigo Rasponi, Clarice’s former promised husband who was believed by all to be dead. “Federigo” is actually the dead man’s sister Beatrice, in disguise, and in search of her own lover Florindo Aretusi, played by Rui Ferreira de Silva Junior.
An experienced Princeton actor, Taylor Gibb as Beatrice has an impressive handle on the challenge of playing a man, playing a woman, seeking the agree-able de Silva.
Through a series of misunderstandings and moti-vated mostly by greed, Truffaldino becomes the
servant of both Beatrice and Florindo. Drama and comedy ensue through sword fights and clandestine meetings until everyone ends up happily betrothed and telling the truth.
Riel said the play has been “a great opportunity…I just love working with this age group.”
A Servant of Two Masters is a translation of the play written by Carl Godini in 1743 and Riel noted the cast does an admirable job of overcoming the bar-riers created by language and dialect
With a nod to the talent behind the footlights Riel said: “I think Princeton needs great costumes and great sets to come out.”
The static stage is finely detailed and includes a working water fountain. Head set painter Grace Treusdell is well know for her talents in Princeton although this will be her last play with Crimson Tine Players as she plans to move from the area.
Other contributors to A Servant of Two Masters are Sylvia Bailey, producer; Martin Riel, set build-er; Dawn Gardner, stage manager; Diana Rainer, props designer; Peter Rytkonen, sound and light-ing manager; Lou Terryberry, prompter; Guadalupe Gutierrez, make up; Anne Williams, seamstress, and Lori Gullason, shoemaker.
According to Riel there were so many youngsters hoping for roles in A Servant of Two Masters that the company decided to provide audiences with an appe-tizer play called Ye Old Monty Python Petshoppe, directed by Heather Anderson. Nathan Anderson, Abbagael Fulton, Pattyann Peal, Jordyn McIvor, Delorian Osborne, Marcus Fulton, Ryan Francis, and Meagyn Tinney all have parts in this cutely arranged montage of family friendly Monty Python sketches.
Performances for both plays are April 30, May 1, and May 2 at 7 p.m. with a matinee offered May 2 at 2 p.m. Doors open half an hour before curtain.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students, with donations accepted for the matinee.
The play is sponsored by Ackland Grainger and performances are presented in memory of Charlene Smith and Annette Dixon.
Andrea DeMeerTaylor Gibb, Rui Ferreira de Silva Jr, Bobby Gibb and Isabella Brodie are con-vincing – and sometimes confused – paramours.
Andrea DeMeerVictoria Gibb and Dayton Wales have their simpers down pat as their love is tested by the misunderstandings around them.
