Archetype: Celestial Light-Bearer. Silver Sword, a most unusual,

other-worldly plant species, may have been brought to Earth from

some other dimension for our spiritual edification. Rare plants,

celestial music, exquisite art, and intuitive senses—are but a few of

the divine gifts humans have been given to uplift the soul and advance

the evolutionary process.

One of the most fascinating members of the sunflower family

(Asteraceae) is the infamous silver sword (Argyroxiphium

sandwicense ssp. macrocephalum) that grows in the cinders of

Haleakala Crater on the island of Maui. The rosettes of sword-shaped

leaves are covered with silvery hairs that reflect light and heat and

provide insulation against the intense solar radiation and extreme

aridity of this 10,000 foot (3,000 m) volcanic mountain.

In addition, the leaves contain air spaces filled with a gelatinous

substance that absorbs and stores large quantities of water during the

intervels between rains.

This stored water is especially important when the plant blooms,

because the fast-growing flower stalk requires a lot of moisture as it

develops into a massive inflorescence. Another subspecies of silver

sword (A. sandwicense ssp. sandwicense) grows on the upper slopes

of Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii.

Signature: Exclusive to Hawaii, and having a very delicate root

system, it blooms in a rotund cluster of silvery, curved, spiky leaves. It

remains in this configuration for over a decade, after which, a

spectacular stalk of reddish-purplish florets emerge from its core,

growing to a height of 3-6 feet. This most unusual plant is being

carefully monitored in order to prevent extinction.

Several additional species that are closely-related to the

silver sword also grow on Haleakala, including the green

sword (Argyroxiphium virescens) of fog-shrouded, boggy

meadows and a low-growing, shrubby species (Dubautia

menziesii) of windswept, alpine slopes.

The silversword is a descendant of the North American tarweed. It

is an endangered species, endemic to the areas it grows in. The

silversword found on Haleakala on Maui differs from the one on

Mauna Kea on Hawai'i island, and from the one on Mauna Loa,

also on Hawai'i island. Each variety adapted to its environment,

developing characteristics that allows it to stand alone from the

others. The plant on Maui, for instance blooms from June to

September and the flowers are generally purple to a deep wine

color, while the Mauna Loa variety has yellow flowers.
