WE ARE CLOSING ON THE 5TH FRIDAY

In order to allow our amazing cooks the opportunity to

have holidays off, we are se,ng a scheduled quarterly

closure to allow them to deep clean the kitchen. This

closure will also allow the staff the opportunity to catch

up on their paperwork and do scheduled maintenance

throughout the building. We are calling these days

Fabulous Fi2h Fridays! Each month that has five Fridays

will have a scheduled closing on that last Friday. We hope

that this won’t inconvenience you.

Thanks so much for your understanding.

Do I Really Need a Flu Shot?

Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitaliza=on and

some=mes even death. Every flu season is different, and influenza

infec=on can affect people differently. Even healthy people can get

very sick from the flu and spread it to others. Over a period of 31

seasons between 1976 and 2007,es=mates of fluassociated

deathsin the United States range from a low of about 3,000 to a high

of about 49,000 people. During recent flu seasons, between 80% and

90% of flu related deaths have occurred in people 65 years and older. "Flu season" in the

United States can begin as early as October and last as late as May. During this =me, flu

viruses are circula=ng at higher levels in the U.S. popula=on. An annual seasonal flu vaccine is

the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal flu and spread it to others.

When more people get vaccinated against the flu, less flu can spread through that community.

How do flu vaccines work?

Flu vaccines cause an=bodies to develop in the body about two weeks aDer vaccina=on. These

an=bodies provide protec=on against infec=on with the viruses that are in the vaccine.

The seasonal flu vaccine protects against the influenza viruses that research indicates will be

most common during the upcoming

season. Tradi=onal flu vaccines are made

to protect against three flu viruses. For

the 20162017 flu season, theAdvisory

Commi&ee on Immuniza=on Prac=ces

(ACIP)recommends annual influenza

vaccina=on for everyone 6 months and

older. There are many vaccine op=onsto

choose from, but the most important

thing is for all people 6 months and older

to get a flu vaccine every year. If you have

ques=ons about which vaccine is best for

you, talk to your doctor or other health care professional. Flu shots are free with most Health

Insurance plans. The Bear River Health Department will be at the Senior Center on Wednes-

day, October 5 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Please be sure to bring your medical insurance

card with you. Contact Gary for more informa=on at 4352261453.

Page 9 • h&p://brighamcity.utah.gov/seniorcenter.htm

No one is guaranteed a healthy life. But following certain

guidelines can do a lot for you.

Step 1: Tap into the Power of Food

Make smart choices. You need enough fuel to get through

the day without loading up on extra calories. Start with

fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, seafood, and fatfree

or lowfat dairy products. Avoid trans fatsand empty calories

like those in sugary drinks that don't give you anynutrients.

Step 2: Exercise Regularly

Make fitness a part of your daily life. A good goal is 150

minutes of moderateexerciseeach week. You can break that

into five sessions if each session lasts for 30 minutes. Or you

can do it for less #me, as long as you make your ac#vity

more challenging. Any ac#vity that raises yourheart

ratecounts. It could be brisk walking, sports, housework, or

yard work.

Step 3: Quit Smoking

Get a health boost. No maFer how old you are when

youquit smoking, you improve your chances for a healthy

life almost immediately. Know that it’s never too late. If

you’re a smoker who has developed a health problem, giving

it up can s#ll make a difference.

Healthier Ea$ng & Physical Ac$vi$es for Seniors

The top three ways to avoid telephone

fraud:

Hang up on robocalls. If you pick up the phone and hear a

recorded sales pitch, hang up and report it to the FTC. These

calls are illegal. And plen#ful. Don’t press 1, 2 or any number

to get off a list or speak to a person. That just means you’ll

get even more calls.

Don’t trust your caller ID. Scammers can make caller ID look

like anyone is calling: the IRS, a business or government

office…even your own phone number. If they tell you to pay

money for any reason, or ask for your financial account num-

bers, hang up. If you think the caller might be legi#mate, call

back to a number you know is genuine not the number the

caller gave you.

Talk to someone. Before you give up money or informa#on,

talk to someone you trust. Scammers want you to make deci-

sions in a hurry. Slow down, check out the story, search

online or just tell a friend. We find that people who talk to

someone anyone are much less likely to fall for a scam.

MEDICARE INFO:

Open enrollment is from October 15 to December 7.

During this annualenrollment period you can make

changes to various aspects of your coverage.

You can switch fromOriginal Medicareto Medicare

Advantage, or vice versa.

Youcan alsoswitch from oneMedicare Advantageplan

to another, or from oneMedicare Part D(prescrip=on

drug) plan to another.

And if you didn’t enroll in a Medicare Part D plan when

you were first eligible, you can do so during the general

open enrollment, although a late enrollment penalty

may apply.

If you wantto enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you

must meet some basic criteria.

♦ You must be enrolled inMedicare Part A and B.

♦ You must live in the plan’s service area.

♦ You cannot haveEndStage Renal Disease

   (some excep-ons apply).

If you’re already enrolled in a Medicare Part D

prescrip=on plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan and

youdon’t want to make changesto your coverage for

2017, you don’t need to do anything during open

enrollment, assuming your current plan will s=ll be

available in 2017. If your plan is being discon=nued and

isn’t eligible for renewal, you will receivea nonrenewal

no=ce from your carrier prior to open enrollment. If you

don’t, it means you can keep your plan without doing

anything during open enrollment.

But be aware that your benefits and premium could be

changing for 2017. So even if you’re confident that you

want to keep your current coverage for the coming year,

it’s important to make sure you understand any changes

that may apply, and that you’ve double checked to make

sure that your current plan is s=ll the best available

op=on. The available plans and what they cover

changesfrom one year to the next, so even if the plan

you have now was the best op=on when you shopped

last year, it’s important to verify that again before you

lock yourself in for another year.

Gary, Nancy, and Vickie are your State Health Insurance

Program counselors and would love to assist you with

the process of guaranteeing that you are in the best

possible plan. They have just completed 16 hours of

training to ensure that they are providing you with the

most current informa=on.

The Big W (3 part series)

Weber, the name comes from the name of a fur trapper,

John Henry Weber. Weber was born in Denmark in 1779.

He came to the United States and started in fur trapping

in 1812. He was a great influence in the area so the We-

ber River was named a-er him as were several other

things. The Weber Stake and Weber County. The LDS

church set up a school called Weber State Academy, and

classes would begin in January 1889. Louis Moench was

to be the principal. Now what is up with that? He wasn’t

even in the country. He was off to Germany and over in

Switzerland serving a mission for the church. Well he

must have got the word because when he returned home

he stepped right into his new job. The school struggled

during the Moench years (18891902). But, low and

behold, a savior came riding down Ogden canyon with his

white hair blowing in the wind to save the school. A side

note here, as I remember his horse was called Danny Boy,

a very smart horse. He had watched David open and

close the gate as well as the door to the granary and he

was going to have his fill. He was just too smart for his

own saddle and he ate too much and died. In 1902, David

O McKay became the principal of the Weber State Acade-

my .

David O Mckay showed interest in the Weber school for

the next 60 years.

PRACTICE HAPPINESS AND SAY, "HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

They say however your personality is, when you are younger, itwill mul#ply in old age. That means if you have a happy

personality, when you are younger then when you get older you will be happy, happy, happy. The opposite is also true.

If youhave agrouchy personality, when you are younger, then when you get older.....well, you get the picture. None of us are

really oldYET but, when I get there I want to be happy. That is whyI am prac#cing being happy NOW. I am hoping that genes will

also come into play. My parents were bothhappy people and pleasant to be around. My parentslived with us the lastfew years of

their lives and I cans#ll hear my Mother's laugh.

Mom came from a family of posi#ve people. I loved it when her siblings or nieces and nephews would come tovisit. Aunt

Martha wasMother's oldest sister and shedidn'thave an easy life. Her health declined as she got older but if you asked her how

she was, she always had a twinkle in her eye and a smile on her lips and she would reply, "PreFy good, if I say it quick

enough." Now that I am geYng older, I have been known to use that line.

My Mother was the youngest of8 siblings. Aunt Martha was one of the older

siblings. Herchildren were close to my Mother's age. Ourchildhood home was

about half way betweensome of the Idaho kinandthe big city ofSalt Lake.Aunt

Martha's oldest daughter had a son born with club feet. It did not daunt the

happy personality of his mother, Louise. She made numerous trips from Idahoto

Primary Children's hospital in Salt Lake Citywhere the deformity was completely

corrected. On those many trips to Salt Lake, Louisestayed overnight at our

house. Dad knew when those twowomen got together there would be a

laughing party. He just slept in another bedroom and let Mother and Louise stay

in the same bedroom laughing like a couple of school girls. My bedroom was

next to themand I loved to hear all that happiness un#l I fell asleep. I never

knew what they werelaughing about, but I know during the day when we would

visit before bed#me, they would tell stories about everything that was happening

in the family. The stories were always long, funny and laughable. My husband

says my family exaggerates stories. He says EVEN I DO THAT! I tell him my

stories are funnier than his. I come from a family of "Funny story tellers" so I have to keep up my part of the family tradi#on.

I think I loved the, "Do you remember" stories the best. One of Mother's kin would say, "Do you remember when....." and an-

other story would come out and they would all be laughing over something that had happened in the past. It didn't maFer how

many problems they had in the past or even if there were problemsin the present, they s#ll laughed. They were not silly, giddy

people, they weremature people with happy personali#es andwere just fun to be around. I enjoyed their stories, even though I

was only a young girl. Which brings me tothe point of, "Have you been wri#ng any family stories that you could share with

siblings, children, niecesor nephews?" I promise youit is a gi- that will keep on giving.

Before email, cell phones, and free long distance dialing, there was the good old hard copy leFer. Mom and Dad's families liked

to write leFers. When mom got a leFer from her family, she loved to read it at the table. She laughed so hard while she was

trying to read the leFer, that I couldn't understand what the funny stories were about. I remember that at Aunt Martha's funeral

one of her granddaughters gave a life sketch and talked of Aunt Martha's"not so easy"life but how she was always so happy she

hid poverty from all her children. I s#ll love to visit AuntMartha's children. They havehappy homes too. There is asign in Nor-

ma's kitchen that says, "Last #me I cooked, hardly anyone got sick." Her sister Dorothy was having so much fun at 90 years of age,

she let them do open heart surgery on her so shecould have years ofmore fun. She is almost 96 now and s#ll bringing laughter

into the lives of a lot of people.

Do youremember that I saidmyMother was the 8th child in her family. She was6 months old, when her father passed away.

Her mother married a widower with 7 children and they had a child of their own. WOW! Talk about Yours, Mine and Ours. If you

lost track of the coun#ng that was a total of 16 children. One of the widower's children was about the same age as my mom.

My Grandmother raised the two girls as twins. I loved it when Aunt Elaine and her family came to visit. I can just hear Aunt Elaine

and my Mom laughing about theirfamily stories, too. I hear my Aunt Elaine'slaugh when I talk to her children and the same with

rela#ves on the other side of my family. I am planning to pass laughter on to my children, and all of their children. too. I hope it

goes on for genera#on a-er genera#on. That is why I am prac#cing happiness.

What does all this have to do with Halloween? It leads meinto one of my favorite Halloween songs, There's No Such Thing As a

Witch.It goes like this:

When you're all alone in the country, and the night is dark as pitch,

Laugh, 'HO! HO! because you know, there's no such thing as a witch!

So there you have it!1 .Prac#ce Happiness.2. Laugh "Ho, Ho" and 3.Have a Happy Halloween.
