Enter to Learn Go out to Serve From the Headmaster Dear Parents, Since I last made comment in the Newsletter two of the House BBQ’s have been held. First it was Barker and Broughton Houses’ turn followed last week by Hassall and Heber. This evening Johnson and Marsh have their opportunity to get together and further develop relationships. Clearly these events have been a great success in building a sense of community amongst parents as I have had a great deal of positive feedback for which I am very appreciative. It is always encouraging to see the senior students and house leaders working so well with the younger students in their houses. There are clearly a good number of outstanding future educators amongst them. During both nights simple coin lines have been conducted raising money to go to the house sponsor students at St Michael Secondary School in Tanzania. Even in this time of economic uncertainly it is pleasing to see the generosity of the parents and students in supporting a community and school that suffers from extreme disadvantage. The School community continues to impress me with its generous support of St Michael’s, clearly putting into practice the ‘Go Out to Serve’ philosophy that is so central to the School. On Saturday evening the first event introducing the Friends of Macarthur takes place with a Cocktail Party commencing at 7.00pm in the Rehearsal Hall and Chapel Courtyard. Again, it is so very warming to see the willingness of the wider School family coming together to support the future development of the School. The support of the families, both current and former, says a great deal about the high regard in which Macarthur is held and the desire for it to grow even further as a place of educational distinction. I would like to acknowledge the great work of the students who recently returned from the Music Tour to Queensland and Northern New South Wales. In spite of the inclement and at times disruptive weather it was a very successful trip. Words of praise should also be given to the students from Year 3 to Year 12 who competed at the CIS Cross Country yesterday. Their effort and commitment to the sporting programme of the Schools is appreciated. Dear Parents,

Since I last made comment in the Newsletter two of the House BBQ’s have been held. First it was Barker and Broughton Houses’ turn followed last week by Hassall and Heber. This evening Johnson and Marsh have their opportunity to get together and further develop relationships. Many students find choosing the right subject to study in Year 9 or Year 11 quite confusing. Subject Selection Evening on 11 June will be an excellent opportunity for parents and students in Years 8 and 10 to gain information about the appropriate subjects they should choose. Students will be pleased to see that Macarthur is offering a wider range of subjects for 2010.

The most important thing is for students to select subjects they like and are good at rather than choosing specific subjects linked to a particular career. It is highly likely that students will have two or three completely different jobs in their working lives. Skills of flexibility and adaptability complemented with the desire and ability to learn new things will help students as they move from one field of work to another. In our ever-increasing changing world, students need to be prepared for a career in which there will be many changes.

Employers are looking for students with generalist skills who can handle change, solve problems, show initiative and communicate effectively with a range of different people. Dress, bearing and punctuality are also important. “You need to lay a foundation of generalist skills. It’s all about how to research, communicate, write clearly, analyse and turn information into knowledge.” Professor Stephen Garton, University of Sydney. If students are concerned about their subject choices, or want advice about what they should pursue after Year 12, they should see the Head of Senior School.

Reports for students in Years 8-12 are being issued within the next week. Students should take heed of their teachers’ advice in order to improve. Students needing help with how to increase their understanding or improve their study strategies should consult their teacher or Head of School. Year 12 Parent Teacher Interviews are being held so that parents and students can obtain additional feedback to help students in their preparation for the HSC Trial Examinations in August.

I was delighted to recently visit Year 1 and see the students engaged in a range of stimulating activities on the theme of transport. Students were focussed on their learning and enjoying the challenges and interactive nature of the tasks they were completing. As part of the curriculum, Macarthur strives to encourage students to develop a curiosity and love of learning. This was clearly happening in the Year 1 classes and there are some exciting things ahead with teachers integrating inquiry based units into K-6 programmes.

Dear Family and Friends of Macarthur,

Privilege of position and wealth are no guarantee against the ravages of illness, brokenness or relationships going off track. We know this and we see it all around us but think, “I will not be like that! It won’t happen to me!” No guarantee…we need only look to Hollywood or to our favourite well known figures or perhaps in our own backyard to know this. We strive for that next promotion or that extra money or possession; we really believe that if only we could establish ourselves this far along the track or in the company or in the business so much will fall into place for us…and the family.

However, by then our family may be estranged or even have become strangers, or something has come in from left field; one of those indefinables or randoms. Whatever the case for you, life as you knew it, is no longer.

If lasting happiness could be found in having material things and in being able to indulge ourselves in whatever we wanted, then most of us reading this newsletter should be delirious with happiness beyond description.

You see, it’s not true. We are deceived. With all that we have and experience we find high rates of family dysfunction, suicide, depression, child abuse, and other personal and social problems beyond description.

C S Lewis stated, “The prodigal son at least walked home on his own feet. But who can duly ignore that Love which will open the high gates to a prodigal who is brought in kicking, struggling, resentful and darting his eyes in every direction for a chance to escape…The hardness of God is kinder than the softness of men. Come to Him!

Whooping Cough Alert

At Macarthur we are committed to the safety & wellbeing of each of our students, therefore we ask that if your child is displaying any symptoms of Pertussis or Whooping Cough to please seek medical attention as soon as possible. Also please notify the school of confirmed cases so that we may alert students or staff who may be more at risk of contracting the disease. Students must be kept at home until the completion of prescribed medication and your GP provides a clearance for school.

Early signs include cold like symptoms followed by a persistent cough that comes in bouts. These bouts may be followed by vomiting.

The Pertussis or Whooping Cough outbreak is continuing in NSW with more than four thousand cases already reported this year.

Reducing the spread of infection requires a high percentage of the community to be immunized against Pertussis therefore NSW Health are actively encouraging vaccination.

The school based Vaccination Programme plays an important part in the control of Whooping Cough. Year 10 dTpa (Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis) will be offered with the Boostrix vaccine to complete their adolescent vaccination programme. This will take place on Thursday 25 June. Permission forms and information kits will be mailed out in the near future.

Thank you for your ongoing co-operation.

Our defending State Champions have gone on to their first victory in the HICES Chapman Cup in a new Division this year - the Seniors. Year 9 students Jake Gonzo, Bianca Furchtmann, Aleksandra Jez and Jessica Sharpe were impressive against Broughton on the topic ‘We should reconsider the purpose of education.’.

This division has new rules and a new age range, Years 9 and 10 together, and the team were given three topics to consider beforehand. They were very convincing on their chosen topic. A good start to the season.

Our Year 10 team, Nathan Cooper, Ashlee Marson, Matthew Cowper and Kelsea Boots, were also impressive. Also in a new division, they found themselves up against four Year 12 students. Their division gives them one hour toprepare, topic unseen beforehand. They were very narrowly defeated as the negative on the topic “Faith should be a part of politics”. Without their star third speaker Rhys O’Shea, who is venturing into Public Speaking this year, Year 10 gave the Year 12’s a run for their money and in the end were simply outsmarted by the broad definition of both faith and politics theother team provided.

Brendan Raymond and Rhys O’Shea recently represented the School at the Sydney Morning Herald Plain English Speaking Award. They both gave prepared and impromptu speeches and received good feedback from the adjudicator.

oh hAppy DAy!Looks, fame, money or a fantastic UAI don’t bring happiness, but doing something for someone else can certainly help. The opportunity, in an organised way, has once again come and gone in the form of Happy Day 2009. On Friday 15 May the playgrounds and classrooms were brightened with the colour of over a thousand gerberas which along with chocolates were the gifts by many students and staff to others in their year groups or work areas, all to make someone else’s day a little happier. However, it is hoped that this may encourage many to think more often about others and how they can do something to say your great, keep going, thanks, well done or I am thinking of you.

A special addition to this year’s event was the Happygram, a greeting, song or poem from a friend or group of friends specially delivered to the recipient in the playground by a very happy and crazily costumed group of Year 12’s led by Annalieze Hambling and Michel’le Donnelly.

It was once again a successful Happy Day for many as they saw the benefits of thinking of others. Thanks to the School Prefects, Middle School Prefects and other helpers who ensured that all the gifts were ready and delivered on time.

You’re Invited to Macarthur’s 25th Birthday Party!Have you booked your ticket yet?

Please note: you must be over 18 years of age to attend this event.

help keep our kiDs sAfe!The safe delivery and collection of students in the Junior School remains a concern at the commencement and conclusion of the school day.

I would particularly ask parents to avoid collecting your children by parking on Lone Pine Drive. Please use the designated pick up and drop off point in the School carpark. Alternately, please park your vehicle and walk your child to and from school. No student should ever enter the carpark unaccompanied by an adult and please do not leave your vehicle in the designated pick-up and drop off zone.

The greatest obstacle to the effective flow of traffic is caused by the fact that many parents choose to park in the pick-up and drop off zone and on Lone Pine Drive, rather than parking in the designated car park.

Students are only to board cars on the far side of the pedestrian crossing, closest to Cafe Macarthur, as this enables the staff on duty to best ensure that this occurs in a safe manner as well as facilitating the smooth flow of traffic and pedestrians in the area.

Please continue to observe the speed limit of 20kph at all times when you are driving in the school grounds and carefully check the area around your car, particularly for small children, when entering and leaving your car parking space.

Observing these guidelines will continue to protect the safety of our students as they arrive and leave the school grounds. It will also ensure a smoother flow of traffic. I thank you in anticipation of your co-operation in this area.

Champ Camp is the study camp run by Macarthur for Year 12 students before the HSC examinations. It takes place in

the first week of the September/October school holidays, beginning on Monday 5

October (the Monday of the long weekend). The camp provides students with an

excellent opportunity to study away from the distractions of home, to set up a study routine for the rest of their study vacation

and to practise examination responses. Most of our Year 12 teachers attend for some

part of the week, to answer questions and mark essays. Study is supervised and there

are breaks for recreation at regular intervals. Application forms will be given to Year 12

students shortly. Any queries may be directed to Mrs Gould-Drakeley or Mrs Low.
