Silver Fox Labels Pass More Flammability and

Smoke Emission Tests

The UK-based labelling solutions manufacturer, Silver Fox, has had its

labels independently tested following safety concerns over a competitor’s

labels.

The tests - carried out by the Interscience Fire Laboratory (IFL), in

Gosport, Hampshire – relate to the International Maritime Organisation

(IMO)’s Smoke and Toxicity Test and to tests for minor materials in BS

6853:1999 and non-listed items in LUL 1-085, as required by London

Underground Limited (LUL). The tests show that Silver Fox’s Fox-Flo® Low

Smoke Zero Halogen Tie-On Cable Labels ably meet modern safety

standards.

Nick Michaelson, CEO of Silver Fox, explained: “We published the results in

the form of a video, available on YouTube. As the video shows, the

competitor’s label starts to burn after only ten seconds and it propagates

quickly, beginning to emit burning particles and black smoke. However,

the Fox-Flo® label doesn’t even start to burn after 45 seconds of exposure

to a constant flame.

“Knowing the high quality of the material used in making our labels – and

also knowing that our labels’ IMO approvals corroborate this, we decided

to put our money where our mouth was and independently test all four

colours of our labels according to the LUL standards."

IFL carried out the tests on 3mm white polymeric sheet, which is used to

make Silver Fox’s Fox-Flo® labels. According to IFL: ‘In our opinion, the

results show that the material meets the requirements set for

BS6853:1999 Table 7 Interior minor use materials of mass 100g to 500g

Category Ia, Ib and II; BS 6853: 1999 Table 8 Exterior minor use

materials of mass 400g to 2000g Category Ia, Ib and II, and LUL 1-085

Table 4 – Flammability and smoke emission requirements for non-listed

items (Limited and dispersed usage).’ 7

Nico Frame, Silver Fox’s Marketing Manager, commented: “The IMO FTPC

Part 2 - Smoke and Toxicity and the IMO FTPC Part 5 – Surface Spread of

Flames tests were carried out on 1mm Fox-Flo® white and yellow labels. In

both tests, these label colours satisfied the requirements of the current

standards.

“Fox-Flo® labels have always saved users time and money,” added Nick

Michaelson, “and, now, we all know that they’re incredibly safe as well.”

Growing market for Silver Fox’s pipe marking solutions 50 Report Article on Silver Fox Pipeline Marking Solutions

From the offshore oil and gas industry to one of the world’s major tennis tournaments, Silver Fox’s Endurance Pipe Marking Tape is an increasingly important factor in ensuring that operations run smoothly.

Pipe labelling is just as crucial an issue as the pipes themselves. While it’s vital to ensure that the pipes are suitable for carrying, safely, whatever it is they carry, it’s also extremely important that these pipes are not only correctly la-belled but that that labelling stays in place and remains legible – often under extremely testing conditions – for as long as possible. Cable Labels: "Same old, same old?"

All cable labels are the same aren't they? Silver Fox CEO, Nick Michaelson, writing for Wire & Cable Tips, goes on to explain...

It’s mid-winter and pretty cold outside but, on a positive note, I’m now the proud owner of a new log burner! That’s what I call planning ahead! Better still, I’m told it’s much more environmentally friendly than the previous open fire and a lot more efficient.

The trouble is, I just can’t get it to start. I’ve wasted so much time trying to set it up. Yes, I read the instructions – but to no avail. Quite apart from the time I wasted, there are the wasted logs and the frustration of it all. It must the log burner itself.

So I called the manufacturers. Still no joy! Then I started to work things out for myself. It’s the “b”logs, as my wife calls them. Sure enough, it turns out they’re the wrong type of wood and way too damp. Don’t be hard on me. How was I to know? I thought all “b”logs were the same. They certainly look the same. Now I’ve learned my lesson, I ask the right questions and use a damp meter. It all works perfectly.

So, what’s this got to do with low smoke zero halogen (LSZH) labels? It’s about asking the right questions and re-viewing data before you choose a product, to make sure it not only works, but works properly and safely in your system.

Middle East Electricity event includes Silver Fox

Products from the UK-based labelling solutions manufacturer, Silver Fox,

will be on show at the Middle East Electricity exhibition, taking place at the

Dubai International Exhibition Centre, from 11th to 13th February.

Arabian Falcon, which distributes the company’s products in the UAE, will

be showcasing – at stand 2C50 - Silver Fox’s wide range of solutions for

the fast and efficient identification of cables, wires, optical fibres, panels

and equipment which are used in the energy, electrical, instrumentation,

power, rail, data and telecommunications sectors worldwide.

Drawing visitors from over 100 countries worldwide, Middle East Electricity

contains some 1,250 exhibitors, from 54 countries, and includes 22

government-sponsored country groups and national pavilions.

The conference accompanying the exhibition concentrates, on the first day,

on Green Energy. On the two subsequent days, there is a conference on

solar energy, followed by a one day workshop on the topic.

Nico Frame, Silver Fox’s Marketing Manager, commented: “The growing

popularity of renewable – or ‘green’ – energy has seen many solar

photovoltaic (PV) cells, or panels, appearing in recent years. Using this

‘clean energy’ means that users reduce their carbon emissions by up to

one tonne a year.

“The solar PV cells, which convert solar radiation into direct current

electricity, all need to be appropriately and durably labelled – for the

benefit of installation engineers and users alike. Providing these solar

power labels - especially solar power warning labels has become one of our

specialisms.”

“Silver Fox has been at the forefront of the development of innovative

durable and time-saving labelling solutions for over 30 years – so it was a

natural move for us to develop solar power labels,” explained Nick

Michaelson.

13

“Of course, our customers are increasingly cost-conscious and,

importantly, using our labels can save them significant amounts of time,”

Nick continued. “Our goals are to make labelling simple, fast and effective

while offering exceptional levels of customer service and continue to offer

industry leading innovation – or, put simply, working to turn Time into

Profit.

“This is what we, and our Middle East distributors, Arabian Falcon, will be

showcasing in Dubai in February.”

Silver Fox® expands testing knowledge-base

with UV weathering tests

Silver Fox®, a leading UK manufacturer of labelling solutions, has reported

positive results from the most recent tests carried out on its labels – for

exposure to ultra-violet (UV) weathering.

These tests – for 500 hours’ exposure to UV weathering – apply to Silver

Fox’s:

Prolab® Select wrap-round labels

Original Prolab® wrap-round labels

Legend™ polyester thermal printable tie-on TSR3 ribbon

Legend™ polyester laser printable tie-on laser labels, in yellow, white, red,

green, blue and orange

According to the test certificates, issued by Materials Technology Ltd, of

Totton, Hampshire, after 500 hours’ exposure all the labels were perfectly

legible. There was no apparent change in the Prolab® Select wrap-round

labels (which are actually designed and made for internal use); no visible

surface residue; no visible cracking or crazing, and no visible change in the

surface gloss of the products.

The original style Prolab® wrap-round cable label remained clearly legible

throughout the test but there was some discolouration. However, the label

was tested to an outdoor weathering cycle, although it is intended for

indoor use.

These Silver Fox® labels are primarily designed for internal use; however

questions are often posed about their use externally, so it was decided to

have them tested by exposing them to ultra-violet weathering. Silver Fox®

are proud of having extensive product testing data available to their clients

and are constantly adding to their testing knowledge base.

With the polyester laser printable Legend™ tie-on labels, in yellow, white,

red, green, blue and orange, there was no visible change in the white tie-

on labels but the non-white labels showed slight chalking, resulting in

some lightening, but the print on the labels remained clearly legible.

The tests were run in accordance with ISO 4892-3 Method A cycle 1

(outdoor simulation) using UVA bulbs and approved continuous cycling

parameters. 21

Nico Frame, Silver Fox’s® Marketing Manager, explained: “Silver Fox® only

ever tests its finished final printed products in this way. This is in

preference to, for example, separately testing each of the materials that

comprise the label – because this could give an unrealistic assessment of a

finished label’s ability to withstand the rigours of real world, active use.”

Silver Fox® labels exhibit excellent results in

latest long-term UV tests

Not content with putting its labels through demanding product testing,

leading UK manufacturer of labelling solutions, Silver Fox®, is now

subjecting its labels to long-term accelerated ultra-violet (UV) weathering.

The test, being conducted by the independent test laboratory, Materials

Technology Ltd, in accordance with ISO 4892-3 Method A cycle 1 (outdoor

simulation), covers Silver Fox’s:

Fox-Flo® zero-halogen tie-on cable labels.

Endurance® Pipeline ID tape ISO 14726, in various background

colours.

Endurance® Pipeline ID Tape BS 4800, in various background

colours.

According to Materials Technology, accelerated UV weathering can have a

number of effects on exposed samples – for example, changes in colour.

Other effects, such as surface chalking, can also result in apparent colour

changes to the samples and in some extreme cases even disintegration.

Its interim report on the Silver Fox® labels, states: ‘Testing has been

performed for a 6000 hour period. This is considered to be a long duration

test and is the longest test period over which we have ever tested a

product – exceeding, for example, the testing of decking products that are

used in the Middle East.’

‘For label products, the legibility of any printing is one of the most

important characteristics and, in this work, the legibility of the printing has

been assessed against any other changes that have occurred. In general,

the legibility has remained very good despite any other changes.’ In the

samples where information was printed on them, such as the Fox-Flo

labels, the legibility remained clear and distinct.

25

Nick Michaelson, CEO of Silver Fox®, commented: “Although the tests

aren’t yet complete, these are very encouraging results for our labels,” he

added. “We don’t know of any other label manufacturer that’s subjected its

products to such intensive testing – so we’re delighted with how well Silver

Fox® labels are performing.”

“No wonder our labels are increasingly becoming the first choice for

engineers working in the Energy, Power, Rail and Data & Telecoms

industries worldwide,” he said.

halogen (LSZH) tie-on cable labels. Independently verified as meeting

tough, stringent standards with regard to durability despite the most

demanding of operating conditions, Fox-Flo® labels printed in conjunction

with along with the Silver Fox® Fox-in-a-Box® Cable Label System is

approved for use by London Underground (LUL) – especially for labelling

both low and high voltage power cables.

Through customers, such as Waverley Engineering, Silver Fox® labels and

Fox-Flo® in particular, are often used on London Underground and other

major rail projects. Silver Fox® products are also supplied by, among

others Grafoplast Europe (based in Hitchin) and Thorne & Derrick, the well

-known national distributor and worldwide exporter of cable installation,

cable jointing and electrical equipment for industrial and hazardous areas –

which includes use in the rail industry.

Silver Fox®, a leading UK manufacturer of labelling solutions, has been

supplying laser engraved labels to the broadcast systems engineers, TTL

Video. Principally, these labels help TTL Video - which offers cable

installation, testing, repair and maintenance services for broadcast and

fibre optic cable – whose equipment records Premier League football

games, for broadcast.

TTL Video’s Stefan Bewsey explained: “Most of our panels are custom-

made and it’s important for us to get these made quickly, so that we can

do our job. Since the installations to which these panels refer change from

day to day, depending on the needs of the broadcasters for which we

work, we need suppliers that are flexible and highly adaptable in order to

meet our requirements.

“We have up to 50 camera positions around each ground,” he added.

“These include audio, fibre, data and triaxial cameras – so there are about

six or seven cut outs that Silver Fox® has to make for us for each job we

do.

“Silver Fox® is able to change its label designs and wording quickly – and

that makes things a lot easier for us, helping us to do the job we need to

do: to bring each game to the viewers,” said Stefan.

Based in Redhill, Surrey, and a member of the British Safety Council, TTL

Video supplies broadcast engineering expertise and facilities to the

international television, sports and entertainment industries. Carrying out

major installation and consultancy projects as well as de-rig and truck-

based outside broadcast production, its primary areas of operation are

systems integration; outside broadcasts; installation of venue and stadium

broadcast facilities; consultancy and expertise for engineering projects, as

well as cable and fibre optic termination and repair.

According to Nick Michaelson: “We’re delighted that our labels are proving

a hit with TTL Video. In particular, engineers want the reassurance,

reliability and flexibility that comes from working with a company that

manufactures in the UK. In addition Silver Fox® are customer focused,

offer next-day delivery, have a team that truly understand the products

Fox-Flo® and the Endurance® Modular ID

System expected to shine for Silver Fox® at

Rail Live 2014

Silver Fox®, a leading UK manufacturer of labelling solutions, will be

exhibiting its solutions for the rail industry at Rail Live 2014 which is being

held at Long Marston, near Stratford-upon-Avon for the second time. Rail

Live is the new name for the show that was previously called National

Track Plant Exhibition in 2013. Rail Live 2014 will run from the 18th-19th of

June 2014 and is organised by Network Rail in association with The Rail

Alliance, The Rail Engineer and Macrail.

Under the Rail Alliance Marquee, Silver Fox® will be showcasing its wide

range of labelling solutions but especially its Fox-Flo® UV-stable, low

smoke, zero halogen (LSZH) tie-on cable labels. Independently verified as

meeting tough, stringent standards with regard to durability despite the

most demanding of operating conditions, Fox-Flo® labels printed in

conjunction with along with the Silver Fox® Fox-in-a-Box® Cable Label

System is approved for use by London Underground (LUL) – especially for

labelling both low and high voltage power cables. In addition, Silver Fox®

also recently obtained Network Rail approvals for their labelling solutions.

Silver Fox® will also be demonstrating their Endurance® Modular ID System

which is the fast and flexible way of labelling pipes, valves, junction boxes

and cable trays.

According to Nick Michaelson, CEO of Silver Fox®, the Silver Fox® Tie-On

cable marking system is ideal for large cables and cable bundles -

including use with nylon or stainless steel cable ties – such as are used in

the rail industry. For example, they are used on LUL compliant cable labels

for power, co-axial and fire alarm cables.

He added: “We’re delighted to be heading to Long Marston for the event

and at a time of continued investment in rail, Rail Live 2014 provides an

excellent opportunity for companies, such as Silver Fox®, that serve the

rail infrastructure market to showcase their products and services.”

How the Silver Fox® Endurance® Modular ID System can save the Rail Industry Time and Money.

Increasingly, the UK Rail industry as well as those in the Energy, Power, Data & Telecoms industries worldwide are discovering – and using – the Silver Fox® fast and flexible way of labelling pipes, valves, junction boxes and cable trays by using the Endurance® modular ID system.

Made by the UK-based Silver Fox®, these cable marking and labelling solutions encompass heat shrink cable markers (both standard and low-smoke zero-halogen (LS0H); 2-part cable markers; non-shrink cable markers; and wrap-around cable markers for permanent marking of LV-HV power, instrumentation cables and control.

The Endurance® Modular system was showcased at the recent Infrarail 2014 Expo in London as well as the hugely successful Rail Live 2014 event at Long Marston.

“Silver Fox® cable markers and cable labels provide fast, efficient and high quality identification of cables, optical fibres, wires, panels and low and high voltage electrical equipment in both safe and hazardous areas,” described Silver Fox’s CEO, Nick Michaelson.

“We are also happy to report” Nick added, “that Silver Fox® has most recently achieved approval from Network Rail, adding to our London Underground (LUL) approval.”

“The Silver Fox® Endurance® system can be used for a wide range of applications,” he continued. “The Modular ID system labels use black letters, available in 17mm and 30mm sizes – in two-part polypropylene and laminated PVC respectively - printed on a yellow background. Silver Fox® also provides black mounting strips in 1m (3.28ft) lengths for these cable markers to their customers. The cable markers and mounting strips – which are made from ultra-violet stabilised PVC material - are resistant to water, salt alkalis, mild acids, petroleum grease, aliphatic solvents and oils.

“Additionally, the 17mm raised characters remain legible even if they’re painted over!” Nick added. “Moreover, the 17mm size characters incorporate a slot through which a cable tie can be fed, providing customers with the option of either a rail or cable tie mounting.”

“Furthermore, all components of the Silver Fox® Endurance® Modular ID system have been successfully tested to withstand temperatures of between 85 degrees Celsius and minus 45 degrees Celsius for over 1,000 hours. This substantial degree of durability ensures that will continue to function under difficult operating conditions and so reduces the need to go to the time and trouble of replacing them.” commented Nico Frame, Silver Fox’s Marketing Manager.

“We believe that it is vital for all Silver Fox® cable labels and cable markers to be tested carefully and thoroughly at MoD, UKAS-certified and independent recognised test laboratories in compliance with a number of different MIL and other standards. This ensures that in ‘real world’ conditions, they’ll perform well and, indeed, out-perform their rivals. It is this testing and forward thinking which allowed Silver Fox to gain Network Rail and London Underground approval,” Nico said. “And, of course, unless the specification states otherwise, in all tests carried out on its labels, Silver Fox® tests the finished, printed label - and not just the material on which it is printed. This is all part of our continuing resolve to ensure our customers profit from effective and innovative products, enabling them to use time productively, whilst also benefiting from high quality and durable solutions.”

Labelling – ‘Flaming’ Marvellous

Introduction

Producing unique, high quality, durable cable labelling solutions is a goal many companies are working towards. However, what most many do not realise, that coming up with a new, original product idea is not the only part of the process of becoming successful.

Many companies will produce a product that looks identical to others already on the market. How then do you make your product standout against the rest?

This article takes one case study in particular into consideration, explaining that product testing is just one of the ways to make your products stand out against your competitors, and allow you to produce the highest standard of product.

Background

It is very strange in that as soon as you come across an effective new product or even a good idea about one, you say how simple that is and wonder why somebody had not thought of it before.

The corkscrew bottle opener and a quick release valve are excellent examples of this point. Embracing and then embodying simplicity is a key to successful invention.

In reality, it takes hundreds, if not thousands of hours behind the scenes to get to something about which somebody will say:

“That is so simple!”

There’s a danger that that person could even dismiss the thought process that has gone into producing the invention since it’s so simple, it’s not ‘special’ or significant enough to be any good. Moreover, it can’t be as simple as all that, otherwise everybody would have done it years ago.

Yet, successful invention tends to focus on the simple and, simply, make it work. This is certainly true in the business of creating labelling solutions.

The Project Food Chain

Many engineers are tempted to disregard labelling as being only a minor part of a project. Silver Fox are in agreement that labelling is very much low down on the project food chain.

However, get the labelling wrong and, suddenly, something that was a tiny fraction of a percent of the whole project can hold up that project and end up costing millions!

Additionally, the quicker a project is signed off, the quicker the contractor can get the invoice in and get paid.

Silver Fox are a UK owned and managed company and they’re constantly investing in product development, both in terms of software, printers and the labels themselves.

Moreover, they independently test all of these products tirelessly so the client can be assured of the quality and low maintenance costs going forward.

In every sector of oil and gas supply sector, manufacturers and suppliers have to prove that their products are better than previous versions of the same product and better than versions of competing products. They must show that these products offer better service, better support, back-up delivery and even long-term reliability.

Fire Starter

All this got the team at Silver Fox thinking and so, one rainy Friday afternoon, they literally set a match to their products.

Independent test results are exceptionally important but engineers tend to like and trust practical, ‘hands-on’ tests. So, setting aside the independent testing that was yielding extremely encouraging results, they decided to compare, in a raw way, just how their products stacked up against those of a very large competitor.

The results were alarming. The competitor’s products, promoted as Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LS0H) labels, turned out not to be LS0H and burned vigorously and emitted burning particles after only a few seconds of being exposed to a naked flame. By contrast, Silver Fox’s LS0H label didn’t burn even after 45 seconds of exposure to a naked flame.

Recently, an engineer told Silver Fox that it would be a godsend if their label lived up to its UV testing certificate but, he went on, it couldn’t because it looked the same as all the other labels and all labels are the same, aren’t they?

In reality, as independent as well as their tests show, all labels are far from being the same, even if they look similar. No product is the same as a competitor’s in any area. Each one is manufactured differently with different tolerances on different machines and, perhaps, using different materials.

Conclusion

After reading this article, it should be clear that product testing is an important part of enhancing your product and company, and making you stand out from everyone else. Silver Fox is a prime example of a company that has taken product testing seriously, and are benefitting greatly from this, emphasising the need for product testing and development, not only to ensure high quality products which stand out from the rest, but safety too.

Silver Fox® Labels Endure Tough High

Temperature Tests

Silver Fox®, a leading UK manufacturer of labelling solutions, has reported

extremely positive results from the most recent tests carried out on its

labels – for exposure to high temperatures.

Unless the test specification requires otherwise, Silver Fox® only ever tests

the finished, printed label and not just the material on which it is printed.

According to the resulting certificate, which relates to the white, yellow,

blue and red Fox-Flo® UV-stable, low smoke, zero halogen (LSZH) tie-on

cable labels produced by Silver Fox®: ‘Environmental Test Service (ETS)

performed visual inspections of the labels by comparing them with control

samples provided by Silver Fox Ltd.’

The tests — carried out by the UKAS-certified Berkshire-based

Environmental Test Services (ETS) – were performed in accordance with

the test specification MIL-STD-202G, Method 108A. They were carried out

over a 3 month period.

When tested, Silver Fox’s Fox-Flo® labels showed no change after being

subjected to a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius for 500 hours.

These labels continued to perform well when subjected to a temperature of

85 degrees Celsius and at 100 degrees Celsius for 500 hours – with only

the white label becoming ‘a shade darker’, according to ETS.

The same thing was observed when the Fox-Flo® labels were kept at 100

degrees Celsius for 1000 hours.

Nick Michaelson commented: “It’s part of our on-going resolve to do all we

can to enable and empower our customers to turn time into profit.

“Our goals are to design, develop and supply complete labelling solutions

including software, hardware and label material ensuring a highly time

saving and durable solution for all our customers,” he added.

Silver Fox A Guide to Ferrules and Ferruling.

Introduction.

There are currently such a wide variety of wire marking solutions, that

it is very easy to get confused as to which ones are the best for your

particular needs, whether you are a client or contractor. This article is

aimed to give information about some different labelling techniques,

to make the decision of choosing a label type a lot easier. The choices

vary from simple individual ferrules, which can be incredibly time

consuming and awkward to place on the wire, to high tech machines that produce terminal markers, along with a

wide range of other applications. It comes down to the question, what is in it for you?

It is a simple assumption that contractors and clients will want to have a straightforward, simple to use and trust-

worthy solution. However, the straightforwardness, ease and cost-effectiveness of that solution will depend on the

complexity of the job in question.

Currently, there are a number of manufacturers that produce products for this market area, including Graftoplast,

Partex, Panduit and Silver Fox – which is unique in developing and manufacturing its labelling solutions in the UK.

The 2-part labelling option.

With any wire or cable labelling job that requires, for example, four characters or

less, it seems sensible and effective to use manual, individual ferrules. It would

take longer to turn on a computer and printer, load them with both the relevant

information and blank labels – then produce and apply the labels. It is a far more

time-consuming task in comparison to the low tech, old fashioned manual ferrule

approach. Anything longer than 4 characters however, and you’re better off using one of the options explained be-

low.

All the companies mentioned above are similar in that they produce 2-part wire marking systems. This means users

print the label, either with a thermal printer or an ordinary office laser printer, typically onto a rigid strip of plastic –

which forms the ident (ID). The way this system works is that once the ID has been printed, you push this into a clear

plastic tubing sleeve. This system is different from other labelling solutions in that the label can be produced and

placed in the clear tubing either before or after it is been installed onto the

wire – and regardless of whether the wire is already connected, giving the

user freedom to change the IDs throughout the project.

A significant disadvantage of using most 2-part wire systems currently

available, is that the plastic strip which is printed on tends to be quite thick.

The clear tubing has only a small recess where the ID is fitted into, which

results in the label being forced into the gap in the clear tubing, making it difficult to get it both in and out again.

In comparison, Silver Fox’s Legend® 2-part labelling system uses flexible material, and a specially designed tail. It is

thin, so easily fits into the label recess, and is easily removed again, if needed. Once the project is finished, the tail

end can be removed, but the label can still be changed if needed. This is the innovative Silver Fox ‘pull system’. The

tail is thinner than the ID, so it easily fits through the recess of the clear tubing. Once it is through, and out the other

end, simply put the rest of the label through, and stop when the ID is in the correct place. This system is far

easier, and saves you time. 52

A major benefit of this system is that the ID can be changed at any stage of

the project without cutting it of the wire. So time can be saved in a projects,

if something arises during a project and you do have to change the ID. This

takes a matter of seconds and compares positively with the added time and

cost of cutting a wire, re-labelling it, re-terminating it and finally re-testing

the circuit – which would otherwise be necessary.

Every project is different, and there are projects where, during construction, there will be many changes, so a 2-

part labelling system will be preferred, despite it needing two operations (applying the clear tube, then printing

and applying the label) – and using Silver Fox’s 2-part labelling solution is a significant time saving product.

Along with Silver Fox, Partex also offer a 2-part laser print option, the

size of an A4 sheet – so it can go through a standard laser printer.

Effectively, the Partex sheet produces flexible rectangular labels that

are pushed into the clear tubing. However, because of their shape,

they cannot vary in length – and since a flexible piece of polyester

can’t be pushed into the clear tubing, because it’ll just bend making it

difficult to get in. Hence, the favoured Silver Fox ‘pull’ system.

Other types of labelling.

Of course, there are other approaches to wire marking, most notably Heatshrink and Non-shrink tubing methods.

These are similar in that you print information onto the tubes. Non-shrink tubing is usually made from PVC and is

simply slid onto a wire, while Heatshrink made from polyolefin labels, which are slid onto a wire or cable, then can

be shrunk down using a heat gun and comfortably grip to the cable on which they are labelling.

The Non-shrink tubing option.

It can be particularly helpful in higher volume jobs to use Non-shrink tubing, mainly where there are likely to be

few changes, but where it is important to be able to produce the relevant IDs not only cost-effectively but also in a

short space of time. A benefit of this method is a single application - just the one tube is slid onto the wire, unlike

with the 2-part system, which requires 2 parts, and consequently, 2 operations. The single application saves time,

and Non-shrink tubing is a low cost option in comparison to both individual ferrule labelling and Heatshrink tubing.

Both Partex and Silver Fox offer Non-shrink tubing solutions. Silver Fox’s Non-shrink tubing (which is made in the

UK) is flexible, matt and oval in shape. Its shape is special because it is designed to enhance the labels grip on the

wire, which in turn, stops the label slipping down. You can also leave the label with the text facing up, and it will

not move, making identification easier for future references.

While those using a 2-part labelling approach have the option of using either a standard laser printer, or a thermal

printer, Silver Fox’s Non-shrink labels can only be printed using its ‘Plug‘n’Play’ thermal printer. There are benefits

to this however, as it has a unique feature which allows 2 strips of label to be printed concurrently. Whether

printing labels for both ends of a wire, or just printing a straightforward job using this method offers maximum use

from the thermal ribbon. Furthermore, this decreases the time spent on

printing. Silver Fox have developed its software and hardware to

produce.its current solution, where one software, one printer and one

ribbon can be used to print all its thermal labels, which saves companies

both time and money. 53

An extra bonus from using the Silver Fox system, is that, when creating ferrules, users can select the length of label

they require. This can be any length and there is no limit to the number of letters or numbers that can be printed

on each label, it is 100% customisable, and tailored to individual needs.

It is important to choose the right labelling solutions for you, and what is most appropriate for your project. In

order to do this, careful consideration is needed. Silver Fox understand that labelling is only a small part in most

projects, but it is also necessary, so they have spent a lot of time developing their products to make them suitable

for you.

Silver Fox® to Demonstrate Latest Labelling Innovations

at ADIPEC 2014.

Silver Fox®, a leading UK manufacturer in labelling solutions, will be

featuring a number of their solutions at this year’s ADIPEC exhibition at

the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, UAE from the 10th to 13th of

November. This expo represents a perfect opportunity for Silver Fox to

share their recent innovations to the Oil and Gas industry.

Silver Fox will be joining Arabian Falcon Electrical Equipment, their local

distributors, in Hall 12 — Stand 12061 to demonstrate their full range of

labelling solutions.

Solutions include: Fox Flo® UV-stable, Low Smoke, Zero Halogen Tie-on

cable labels, Legend™ LHZ2 Low Smoke, Zero Halogen Heatshrink and

Legend™ LNST Non Shrink Tubing, as well as the Endurance® Range -

including Pipeline Identification Tape, and Modular ID.

Long term durability is a key issue in the oil and gas industry. That’s why

Silver Fox only ever use the highest grades of material and back this up by

extensive independent testing in a number of key extreme conditions.

Fox-Flo® tie-on cable labels, for example, have been successfully tested for

8000 hours accelerated UV ageing according to ISO 4982 Part 3 Method A

Cycle 1. This equates to around 12-16 years Northern European 6.5-8

years Tropical regions. The performance of the labels went so well that

even after 8000 hours they remained fully flexible. They have also been

successfully tested for halogens according to IMO FTPC Part 2 and 5. Other

tests include IEC60068-2-5 Test Kb Salt Mist (Cyclic) severity 1 for salt

mist spray.

Silver Fox also produce an innovative non-shrink tubing that has also been

tested for salt mist spray and can be used as an alternative to heatshrink

wire marking. One of the key benefits of this system is that no heat gun is

required. Therefore simply print the label and slide it onto the wire and the

special shape of the tubing will grip it firmly.

All these labels are printed through the Fox-in-a-Box labelling solution that

makes it easy to produce and print and helps save a significant amount of

time.

56

Over the past 30 years, Silver Fox® has been at the forefront of the

development of innovative, durable and time-saving solutions. This is

driven by our passion for excellence and a determination to be the best in

our field. We also want to ensure our labelling solutions can perform

exceedingly well in all areas of industry, giving great customer satisfaction

across the board.

The Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference is

amongst the top three Oil and Gas events globally and is the leading

exhibition and conference for Oil and Gas professionals in the Middle East,

African and Asian subcontinents. Silver Fox are delighted to be taking part

in this, its 30th year, returning for the 3rd time to exhibit.

If you are visiting the event, then please drop by and see us or make an

appointment in advance.

Endurance® Pipeline Identification Tape pass 6500 hours of

accelerated UV ageing.

What is routine for Silver Fox is exceptional for others. The most recent

independent UV ageing tests undertaken by Silver Fox clearly illustrate this

point. Whereas, if tested at all, manufacturers will test their pipeline ID tape

for maybe 500 hours of accelerated UV. Silver Fox’s Endurance® Pipeline

Identification tape, has been successfully tested for 6500 hours. That is nearly

9 months of continual testing, against just 20 days (500 hours).

Identification and labelling is a low priority job for many, but still extremely

important. Silver Fox understands this and also understands that once applied,

the longevity of the ID tape not only saves time and money on replacements/

maintenance, but also supports possible health and safety issues - such as

visible marking.

This is why they use the best material and then extensively and independently

test their solutions. 6500 hours of accelerated UV is equivalent to

approximately 9.75 – 13 years external use in Northern European conditions,

and 5.4 - 6.5 years in Tropical Regions.

The thoroughness of Silver Fox is also demonstrated by the depth of the

testing. 32 different colours were tested to monitor and measure the effect of

UV on each of the colours over time. The results even after 6500 hours

showed all colours were clearly visible and the adhesion of the tape was also

excellent.

Silver Fox have also independently tested Endurance Pipe ID tape for H2S, Salt

Mist Spray, Moisture Resistance, and both High and Low temperatures. All of

these tests have shown the quality of the materials used reflected by the test

results.

Silver Fox’s Pipeline Identification tape fully complies with British Standards

1710 and 4800, which are health and safety related. BS 1710 states that all

pipes must be marked with the substance transported through them and in

some cases, direction of flow. This, along with the accompanying BS 4800

colour chart, defines the colour range that needs to be used. Silver Fox’s

Endurance pipeline ID tape also meets the international colour standard

ISO14726: ‘Ships and Marine Technology – Identification colours for the

content of Piping Systems’ and the ASME (ANSI) A13.1 2007 North American

Pipe Marking Standard.

58

All Silver Fox Pipeline ID tape is bespoke to the customer. They have the

freedom to stipulate the requirements needed for their individual needs. The

Pipeline ID tape is self-adhesive, so therefore quick to apply, saving customers

time.

‘We are delighted with how well our products are performing in these tests.

6500 hours accelerated UV is an exceptionally demanding test and our

Pipeline ID tape performed extremely well. We recognise the needs and

expectations of our customers in the oil and gas industry and without

question the results from these tests demonstrate that Endurance lives up to

its name.’ said Allan Woodhams, Pipeline Sales Manager at Silver Fox. ‘It is

important to go the extra mile with testing, to make sure your products are a

grade above the rest. Silver Fox pipeline ID tape meets the British Standards,

but what defines the product is this UV Stable testing result, along with

previous results from the Independent Testing Laboratories.’

Silver Fox Labels Endure Further UV Testing

Subjecting its labelling solutions to rigorous and highly demanding

independent tests is routine at Silver Fox. The UK based labelling company

prides itself with only using the highest quality materials. The results from

their extensive testing show that Silver Fox labels are exceptionally durable.

The Long Term Accelerated Ultra-Violet (UV) weathering test was conducted

by an independent testing laboratory, on Silver Fox’s Fox Flo® tie-on cable

labels in accordance with ISO 4892-3 Method A Cycle 1 (Outdoor Simulation)

and has shown the labels to be highly resistant and durable.

Normally a company might test their products for accelerated UV ageing for

around 500 - 1000 hours. This roughly equates to 18 - 24 months, external

exposure. Silver Fox appreciates that their users do not want to be obliged

into repeatedly replacing cable labels, which is why they undertook

accelerated UV ageing for 8000 hours to properly evaluate the effects that

significant accelerated ageing, would have on the finished printed label.

As a rough guide 8000 hours, approximately equates to 12 - 16 years

Northern European Climates and 6.5 - 8 years in Tropical Regions.

The most common outcome of this accelerated UV test is the changes in

colour. This can result from poor pigment stability which results in fading and

can cause the eventual loss of colour. There are other effects such as surface

chalking, which can give the illusion of colour change, so it is important, when

testing, to assess a measured change in colour against changes such as

chalking or other surface defects, like cracking or crazing.

The report given by the testing house states ‘Testing has been performed for

an 8000 hour period, which is the longest duration to which we have ever

tested. For label products, the legibility of any printing is one of the most

important characteristics and in this work the legibility of the printing has

been assessed against any other changes that have occurred. In the samples

where information was printed on them, such as the Fox-Flo labels, the

legibility remained clear and distinct.’
