The SiloPatrol® SSEESSEE Inventory Management System is thesecond edition of the industry-leading cable-basedsmart sensor system that is designed to handle someof the harshest and most dynamic conditions. TheSiloPatrol SSEESSEE system incorporates state-of-the-art sen-sors, a wide choice of operator interfaces, auxiliaryoutputs and displays, as well as unique remote/vendormanaged inventory solutions.

The introduction of SiloPatrol several years ago deliv-ered the first truly robust sensor design, providingreliable and high value solutions for a wide variety ofapplications and industries worldwide. The secondedition SiloPatrol SSEESSEE incorporates significant advancesin this field-proven approach to reliably monitoring thelevel of material in bins, silos and tanks up to 150ft(45.7m) in height. The SiloPatrol SSEESSEE sensor technologyis suitable for use with a multiplicity of powders, gran-ules, slurries and liquids, even in the most harsh anddynamic conditions.

The heart of the SiloPatrol SSEESSEE system is the sensoritself. The second edition sensor, Model SMU (SiloMonitoring Unit), incorporates technological advance-ments, requires no field adjustments and its robustdesign provides virtually maintenance-free operation. The SMU is suited for most any application and can beequipped with a variety of mounting flanges and plumbbobs.

The SiloPatrol SSEESSEE system also offers the most sensorinterface choices:

• RS485 “smart” communications output• 4-20mA analog output• AC/DC Pulse output

The “smart” RS485 output version SMU can be con-nected with either the multi-functional HumanMachine Interface (HMI) or with SiloTrack™ PC-basedInventory Management Software that provides a flexi-ble graphical interface for up to 128 sensors.

The second edition SMU also includes an innovativeHall effect sensor array that monitors the movementand position of the swing-arm that controls theabsorption of slack in the cable system during descentand ascent. The second edition SMU is smarter thanever and uses this technology to control the cable andplumb bob travel to ensure reliability of the measure-ment cycle, even with harsh changing conditions in themost severe applications.

The standalone versions of the SMU generate theirrespective 4-20mA or Pulse output in response to ameasurement query, or automatically with the analogoutput version. The standard “smart” RS485 SMUcommunicates with the operator interface chosen forthe system (HMI or SiloTrack™ PC software). Theseoperator interfaces can perform calculations and con-versions to display the data in the format desired. TheSiloPatrol SSEESSEE system, if so equipped, will also generateauxiliary analog and/or relay outputs. RS485 commu-nications can be accomplished via hardwiring or withwireless transceivers.

The SiloPatrol® SSEESSEE Inventory Management System canbe used in a wide variety of applications. Theseinclude, but are not limited to, simple inventory moni-toring with a standalone HMI display to Remote andVendor managed inventory solutions using SiloTrack™

server and client software to manage inventories atmultiple facilities while providing access to a virtuallyunlimited number of users.

Materials being monitored include a broad list of pow-ders and bulk solids, as well as a wide range of liquidsand slurries. These include coarse/fine granularsolids, powders, liquids, foodstuffs and other sub-stances.

If a stand alone sensor with analog output and nooperator interface display is what you are looking for,the SMU is available in this type of configuration at anaffordable purchase price. The second edition SMU isavailable as a truly standalone analog output transmit-ter, including automatic measurement initiation and arelay output.

The SMU pulse output sensor is typically used for con-necting into older Monitor Technologies inventorysystems. This output version retrofits and replaces theolder CM3A/CM4 sensors and uses the AC pulse out-put to connect to the old system console. The DCpulse output also included with the second editionSMU pulse output version can be used to connect intoexisting PLC systems.

Once a measurement cycle is initiated, theSiloPatrol® SSEESSEE sensor (SMU) “smart” motor system con-trols the descent of a plumb bob, attached to aheavy-duty stainless steel cable, into the vessel. TheSMU measures the amount of cable dispensed via itsunique optical sensing system. The SMU’s optic sys-tem is completely sealed from the internal environmentof the electronics compartment, which is isolated andsealed from material ingress in the mechanical com-partment, to ensure long-term reliable operation.

The descent of the bob is maintained at an optimalspeed by the “smart” motor control system, contribut-ing to the elimination of cable slack and maximizingthe motor life. In conjunction with the unique dualoptical sensing system, the “smart” motor control sys-tem guarantees that the bob will stop when it contactsthe material surface and eliminates the need for amechanical brake. When the bob reaches the materialsurface, the SMU reverses the direction of the motorand transmits the distance value.

During the ascent of the bob, the SMU measures theamount of cable gathered and controls the speed ofascent. This ensures proper cable wrapping in thepatented storage reel and tangle-free operation.

Up to 16 analog outputs or 32 relays can be providedwithin a single enclosure. Up to four AOE’s can beconnected on a single network. The AOE can be locat-ed close to the point of hardwiring terminationminimizing wiring and installation costs.

The SiloPatrol® SSEESSEE Model SMU sensor makes a directmeasurement of the distance between the sensor andthe material surface. This equipment does not meas-ure the volume or weight of the material within thevessel. The HMI and SiloTrack™ PC-based software, when used with a SiloPatrol SSEESSEE “smart” output sensor, may be able to perform calculations to display the vol-ume and weight of the material. These calculations arebased upon the distance measurement and the vesseldimensions and material bulk density entered by theuser during setup.

Note: The calculated volume and weight values shouldbe considered "estimates". Monitor Technologies LLCaccepts no responsibility for the accuracy of the cal-culated and displayed volume and weight values. Theaccuracy (not stated or warranted) of thevolume/weight calculations are effected by the fluctu-ation and accuracy of various factors. These factorsinclude, but may not be limited to, actual vesseldimensions, sensor mounting location, angle ofrepose (negative and positive), material bulk density, material flow properties (ratholes, bridging, etc.),material inlet/discharge locations and material pack-ing. Please consult the factory to discuss applicationswhere volume/weight is of critical importance.

AUXILIARY OUTPUT ENCLOSURESA unique feature of the SiloPatrol® SSEESSEE InventoryManagement System is the ability to incorporate bothrelay and analog outputs with a standard "smart" out-put sensor system. These auxiliary relay and/oranalog outputs are provided in Auxiliary OutputEnclosures (AOE) and are programmed and controlledby either the HMI or SiloTrack™ PC-based InventoryManagement Software.

One analog output and up to four relays (two for HMI;four for SiloTrack) can be assigned to each of the“smart” output sensors. These can be used to tie theInventory Management System into remote controlsystems, sound alarms and for local control functions.
