Where Do We Come From? We are students from the La Center School District, which is located North of Vancouver. We are located in Clark County, like many of you here today.

What Do We Do? Once a month we water monitor with the high schoolers. We do this to make sure our streams
are safe for the wildlife, such as macros and salmon. We check the amount of chemicals that
our community puts into our streams.

A Little About Our ProjectsAlong with water testing
in two spots, we also raise salmon in our
classroom and in our Remote Site Incubator (RSI)that is located at
one of our testing sites.
![Page 5: Silly Salmon Savers Jerot, Josie, Kailey, Kristen, Laura, Liam, Reed, Skyler.](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022020307/56649f115503460f94c24579/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
What is a RSI?A big box that contains water that is
brought in a big tube from up the creek. This tank allows us to raise not only salmon eggs but fingerlings as well. When our salmon are big enough to
survive on their own we release them into our local creek.

After releasing over 1500 fish this year our water testing group has
come up with a hypothesis.
![Page 7: Silly Salmon Savers Jerot, Josie, Kailey, Kristen, Laura, Liam, Reed, Skyler.](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022020307/56649f115503460f94c24579/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
HypothesisIf our Dissolved Oxygen(ppm) and our Turbidy(cm) levels are
high, then the probability of salmon survival in our creek
will increase because the salmon will be able to breathe
in the water.
![Page 8: Silly Salmon Savers Jerot, Josie, Kailey, Kristen, Laura, Liam, Reed, Skyler.](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022020307/56649f115503460f94c24579/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
What is Dissolved OxygenD.O. is the amount of oxygen that is dissolved
into the water. Allowing fish to respirate.
![Page 9: Silly Salmon Savers Jerot, Josie, Kailey, Kristen, Laura, Liam, Reed, Skyler.](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022020307/56649f115503460f94c24579/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)

What is Turbidity?A turbidity tube is measured in cm
instead of what is commonly used(NTU’s)
Turbidity measures the clarity of the water.
As eggs, fish need to have high turbidity. If
the turbidity is low, this means that there
is more sediment, which will coat the eggs
and suffocate them.

Straw ActivityTake a straw. Hold it firmly in your hand while running in place for 30 seconds. Once you are done running, place the
straw in your mouth and try to breathe.
Which is easier?...with or without the straw?
![Page 13: Silly Salmon Savers Jerot, Josie, Kailey, Kristen, Laura, Liam, Reed, Skyler.](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022020307/56649f115503460f94c24579/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
It’s harder with the straw isn’t it?This is how salmon feel when the turbidity and D.O. levels are low.
![Page 14: Silly Salmon Savers Jerot, Josie, Kailey, Kristen, Laura, Liam, Reed, Skyler.](https://reader030.fdocuments.in/reader030/viewer/2022020307/56649f115503460f94c24579/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Conclusion
We have concluded that our hypothesis is correct. Looking back at
previous years we have water monitored, we saw that more salmon have returned to Brezee Creek on the
years that had high D.O. and turbidity.
