Typology of parts to use for saturation with siliconic oil

The saturation of pore filter is an important step to do before starting a CPTUtest. Pagani Company has a complete kit which is necessary for the saturation

 procedure . The following descriptions are made by using a lot of pictures, thisway of explaining make more easy for me to explain and for you to understand I

hope.

1)Mount of mechanical parts tripod of probe The picture1 shows the parts used to mount the tripod of probe(piezocone).

 picture1: Mechanical parts - tripod of probeStart mounting by insertion of feet into the tripod main base so fix those firmly

 by using a hexagonal screwdriver. The assembling of those part is easy, notice

that tripod support part 2 has a square cross section and it is smaller than part 1so is easy to insert into the part 1.

 Now turn the top down of the feet with the mounted base and insert the

“body” of the tr ipod as it shows on the picture2. In the picture 2 is alsoexplained the knobs and their functionality. The tripod of probe is complete

and in the following issue will be explain the probe with the oil kit.

2)Probe and siliconic oil kit 

The probe(piezocone) when is sold from Pagani Company has a Not Saturated

 pore filter(it is a dummy filter) which is used to keep all the parts of probe

together. Please DO NOT USE this pore filter.

Use the saturated once which are in a plastic bottle into siliconic oil. The

 picture4 shows these parts more accurately.

The different parts shown in picture3 will be explained step by step into this quick

reference. Now take the probe and unscrew the head of the probe so you can take off

the non saturated filter. Fix the probe without the 60 degree head into the tripod and

use the knobs to make adjustment of the different parts of the tripod. The picture4show this situation better.

The second step is to fix the Orange box inside the probe and fill the box with

siliconic oil as it shows in the picture5.

Do the following steps in the following order(do not change order )

a) Insert the orange box and Fill it with siliconic oil

b)Insert the saturated pore filter inside of the orange box quickly 

 Pay attention, by saying quickly I mean that take of the pore filter from their

bottle and put inside of orange box without losing time otherwise the filter will start to lose saturation.

c)Insert the X-Ring with his support, the 60 degree header and let the

 parts for few minutes.

Time necessary to take the bubbles of air away from oil. Use the

 syringe to help to take away all the bubbles of air . .

d) Screw in all the parts by paying attention that no part goes out of

the siliconic oil.

Consider the right order and orientation of mounting.

e)Mount all the parts under siliconic oil

We have to let all the system in quite for few minutes until there are no more air

 bubbles coming out of piezocono.

Thus is necessary to put the condom into the piezocone. This step is made by

moving down carefully the orange box as is shown on the picture 11.

The condom is used to prevent the oil leakage during transportation from

saturation place to Test CPTU place. Moreover the siliconic oil is reusable (if

you keep it clean from soil parts or materials which can contaminate it ).

You can spill the oil out of orange box and refill the siliconic oil plastic bottle.

Th e procedure is shown on picture 12 and picture 13.

To take off the orange box from the piezocone, just move the orange box down

till the bottom of piezocone as you see from picture 14 and picture 15.
