These scenes start by introducing the positive influence that a seasoned executive, such as Jack Barker, can bring to the environment, leading the audience and characters to believe that things are really progressing for the company. And although “Jack” starts off on a high note with his strategic corporate theories and business implementations, “Richard” soon learns that what “Jack” thinks is best for Pied Piper may not necessarily be what’s best for its founders. The search for this character started a couple months before we started production and proved to be a difficult search in that the creators and writers were still trying to form this character during the casting process. With each round of auditions, a new incarnation of the character emerged so it then became about finding someone who could encapsulate all of the qualities we wanted… strength, intelligence, subtlety in comedy with a meaningful presence, condescending yet nurturing, good and bad, a friendly jerk. Because this series is set in a very real and relevant world, it has always been our goal to cast the show as true to form as possible. When the plots put the characters in such seemingly heightened situations (though many times based on true events), our challenge is to find someone who fits into the tech world seamlessly (and uniquely) while balancing out the comedic tones with the rest of the cast. We auditioned such a broad range of actors for the role, even career CEOs who had never acted before, but in the end, STEPHEN TOBOLOWSKY was definitely our answer. CLIP #2 / EPISODE 302 Featured in this scene is BRIAN GATTAS as “Ludwig”. On the heels of what seems to be a successful future for Pied Piper, Zach Woods’ character, “Jared”, decides he would like to stop renting out his apartment so that he can then move out of the company’s garage and back into his home. However, upon arriving, he is delivered the news from his tenant that he has almost no rights in the situation and will have to force the tenant out through a lengthy legal process. Brian was a fantastic choice to illustrate one of the most pressing issues facing the San Francisco metro area right now… the influx of technology companies and employees has completely forced out the city’s residents causing major strife in the region. We wanted to cast someone who made it difficult to love or hate the character because while the character’s stance may be correct, his execution of that point is still infuriating, especially to a character as sweet as “Jared”. CLIPS #4 & #5 / EPISODE 302 We were so thrilled with the casting of this sales team. What started as 1-2 lines for each character in one episode, turned into 3-4 episodes for some of these characters. These scenes show the first real sign of conflict with Richard’s vision of the company’s future versus Jack’s vision of the company’s future. In order to highlight the fact that Richard’s control of his own company has gone long beyond him, we needed to cast actors who displayed competence, intelligence and professionalism. SHANNON MCCLUNG is an actor that always delivers whether in an audition or on screen. He has a great feel for being a true sales rep in this world. PHILLIP JEANMARIE has an extremely interesting look given his multiple mixed races and also had a bit of that needed “slick” sales rep feel. ERIN BREEN, “Jan the Man”, could not have been more perfect! In addition to acting, she is a working engineer so the specific technical terms and jargon rolled off so easily for her, which was not an easy task. Her understanding of the subject matter and personal experience with this world offered her much more insight into this character than many others probably could have had. And when Mike Judge said he wanted someone with a low voice, it seemed the role had been written exactly for her. EDDIE LIU played a fantastic young, motivated go-getter delivering lines with just enough ignorance to confuse the condescension. ROLE ACTOR AGENT / MANAGER BILLING RICHARD (#1)

CLIP #7 / EPISODE 305 In this scene, “Richard” (Thomas Middleditch) is trying to take back charge of Pied Piper in the wake “Jack Barker’s” (STEPHEN TOBOLOWSKY) recent exit. He decides to strip the company of nonessential expenses, including the sales team and the key designer, “Dang” (KEYE CHEN). “Dang” actually appeared in two episodes prior to this and portrayed an extremely authentic modern-day graphic designer. The best feedback we can receive as casting directors is seeing our directors and producers bring back guest cast to create more of a storyline around them, which is what happened with all of these roles. CLIPS #8 & #9 / EPISODE 305 These scenes show the perfect way in which the writers so magically paint a picture of optimism then tear it down with one moment of a character’s senselessness. Silicon Valley has always been a mirror to the ups and downs of creating a startup, demonstrating how quickly the fate of millions of dollars can sway with the wind. This scene combines “Richard’s” frantic neuroses and his bruised ego with the consequences of a lack of patience. After demanding an interview with a tech reporter, “CJ Cantwell” (ANNIE SERTICH) to clear his reputation, his financier sets it up with the caveat of beforehand having to undergo media training with the Head of PR, “Dawn” (AZIE TESFAI). Unfortunately, “Richard” bursts into the wrong conference room in a classic comedy of errors and vents his bottled up frustrations in a rant about confidential company issues to the tech reporter rather than the Head of PR. We didn’t find our “CJ Cantwell” right away but once we were given the note that this character should have a “Nikki Finke” persona, we thought immediately of ANNIE SERTICH. As an esteemed member of Groundlings, we knew that she would be able to deliver the smart, relentless, powerful and comedic energy that the role needed. AZIE TESFAI was a wonderful choice, very believable as a young executive in the PR world and giving the scenes a very genuine tone. Also in the scene was DUSTYN GULLEDGE, who has been recurring since Season 1. ROLE ACTOR AGENT / MANAGER BILLING RICHARD (#1)

CLIP #10 / EPISODE 305 In this scene, “Richard” is introduced to his new team of contracted engineers around the world. Given their tight budget, they have now been forced to outsource their coders, which opens up their small hacker hostel up to the world. These roles recurred throughout three episodes and were some of the most fun and interesting to cast. The writers specified a coder from Bulgaria, East India and Estonia. We really wanted to find natives of each of these countries, to cast as true to life as possible, have the accents be as authentic as possible. While we searched high and low, we were pleased to find MILJAN MILOSEVIC (“Gleb”), who is not from Bulgaria but from another nearby Balkan nation, Montenegro. Then we were fortune enough to find SIGRID OWEN (“Elisabet”) who recurs in a later episode as the potential love interest to “Dinesh” (KUMAIL NANJIANI). Through the search for this role, we learned so much about different languages, specifically Uralic Finnic languages and Sigrid happened to be extremely familiar with this specific branch of dialects. Casting JAY MANDYAM as “Sanjay” was a great comedic addition as he is a rising stand-up in the comedy world. ROLE ACTOR AGENT / MANAGER BILLING RICHARD (#1)

CLIPS #11 & #12 / EPISODE 307 A tried and true veteran of this industry, we were so thrilled that KEN LERNER agreed to be a part of the show! He represents a brand of actor that we are often graced to cast. There is a reason this man has consistently worked since 1976 and has appeared in dozens upon dozens of television classics. Although there was more to this role than what made it to screen, KEN represented perfectly the quietly mal-intended business manager for the company that “Big Head” (JOSH BRENER) and “Ehrlich” (TJ MILLER) created. After he alerts them to the fact that their business is completely drained, they later learn that he had, in fact, stolen $6M in order to repay other clients that he had stolen from. CLIPS #13 & #15 / EPISODE 307 How impressed we were when we received a self-tape from CHRIS WILLIAMS for this recurring role of “Hoover”. Another veteran of the television screen, he probably has more than enough footage to garner an offer for this role but as the true actor he is, he submitted an audition within a day. This scene shows “Gavin Belson’s” (MATT ROSS) new security detail as an overly eager, brown-nosing, competent yet desperate man vying for his boss’ approval. This was a different light than Chris usually portrays and it was really entertaining to see the dynamic between these two adult men. ROLE ACTOR AGENT / MANAGER BILLING GAVIN BELSON (#9)

CLIP #14 / EPISODE 307 In this scene, “Ehrlich” (TJ MILLER) and “Big Head” (JOSH BRENER) seek out the District Attorney’s (ANJALI BHIMANI) help in recovering the $6M stolen from their company by their crooked business manager, “Arthur” (KEN LERNER). Instead, she sees the preposterousness of their complaints and also knows that there are much more important issues that require her time. Aware of the outstanding debts that “Ehrlich” still owes to dozens of vendors who worked his million-dollar party, she threatens to come after them for lost wages and labor violations. This writing and this role describe, yet again, the rapid division and further separation of class that the urban areas in which tech companies are based are seeing at an exponential rate. Her intensity and sharpness really, for one of the very rare moments in the history of this series, actually shut down “Ehrlich” into compliance. What we personally loved about casting this is that the final choice was not only someone who felt the most right and gave a great audition, but a woman of color. In a general sense, we are striving to cast a diverse world that is truly reflective of Silicon Valley and the world around it, even researching the diversity breakdown of the tech industry and its largest companies. And our hope is that that is reflected in each episode. ROLE ACTOR AGENT / MANAGER BILLING ERLICH (#3)
