we are able to continue to provide legal services to those who cannot afford representation. Low-income women, men and families from diverse backgrounds can access expertise from legal services agencies because of your support for the Silicon Valley Campaign for Legal Services.

Our work is an ongoing effort, one that rewards us all in a number of positive ways.During the last year, we made major strides that realized a number of important achievements and successes.

Our campaign has reached a major milestone, raising $500,000 this year as we progress over the next three to five years toward our goal of raising $1 million annually. The SILICON VALLEY CAMPAIGN FOR LEGAL SERVICES(SVCLS) provides funds to increase the effectiveness and abilityof non-profit legal services agencies to assist men, women andchildren of all ages, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. Theorganization supports individuals who cannot afford to hire anattorney in civil cases and whose legal rights would otherwise gounrecognized and/or unenforced. Funds raised from the legalcommunity in Silicon Valley and from surrounding areas are distributed to agencies that provide civil legal services directly tothe poor. SVCLS also works to encourage the legal communityto become more involved in the provision of pro bono legalassistance. The Silicon Valley Campaign for Legal Services is arecipient of the American Bar Association’s prestigious HarrisonTweed award, with the Santa Clara County Bar Association, for leadership in expanding and developing support for the provision of free legal services to the poor.

Campaign Mission

Over 521,000 people in Silicon Valley—30% of the popula-tion—qualify for special help due to income, age or disability.These individuals’ critical legal issues are primarily related to:

●● health care;●● the ability to secure and preserve affordable and

fair housing;●● family law issues such as domestic violence, child

custody and divorce;●● economic stability;●● special problems of the elderly;●● consumer fraud, debt collection abuses and other

unfair practices;●● immigration; and●● employment.

The people who receive SVCLS assistance have “poverty level”incomes far below the amount actually needed to live in SiliconValley. Many of these individuals are the working poor. For afamily of three (such as a mother and two children) the federalpoverty level is $16,600/year – well below the Self-SufficiencyStandard for Santa Clara County of $65,589. Many such fami-lies cannot afford even their basic needs without assistance.

Silicon Valley-based legal services agencies lack the financialresources needed to meet the legal needs of our community’spoorest residents. We therefore need and welcome the legalcommunity’s pro bono actions and financial support.

Client CasesInspire Our ActionDonors and beneficiary agencies joined together in celebration of the sixth annual SVCLS distribution of funds on October 19,2005. Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP graciouslyhosted the event, which was attended by over 100 attorneys and supporters from the community.

Clients shared their meaningful, personal stories – includingrelating the circumstances that led them to seek legal assistanceand acknowledging the impact of the legal assistance theyreceived due to SVCLS funding. Here are just two of many client cases this year:

SARA SHARES HER STORY:I worked two or three jobs at a time in order to provide for mychildren. Little by little I saved to buy a home for my family.

I was lucky to find a property I could afford and secured anaffordable mortgage. Everything was going well until I went tothe mortgage company to pay my monthly bill and a salesmanproposed I refinance my property to save money. Instead of sav-ing money, the loan almost cost my children and me our home.

The loan company took advantage of my inability to speakEnglish well. They negotiated the terms of the loan in Spanishand lied in the English language documents. The mortgagelender also lied to me about the fees and interest rate and submitted false and forged documents to get approval for theloan. When the true cost of the loan was revealed to me, I could not pay the monthly charges and my home went into foreclosure.

I am happy to say that with the help oflegal services lawyers, my children and Iremain in our home. I want to thank theselawyers and urge you to support servicesthat make it possible for low-income people to benefit from American justice.

WAN YING SHARES THIS STORY WITH US:When I sought help from a legal servicesagency, I was living in a domestic violenceshelter and was hopeless about my future.

After we legally immigrated to the U.S. at the invitation of my son, my husbandwas diagnosed with Alzheimer’s andbecame increasingly violent. My son

blamed me for my husband’s condition and kicked me out ofhis home. I was in and out of hospitals and shelters for over

six months. I did not speak English and knew nothing aboutAmerica. I just went where my social worker told me to go, and applied for things she told me to apply for. I did not knowmy rights.

The California disability benefit program denied myclaim for help. My case wasappealed while I was stayingat a shelter. I remember theanxiety and fear that wouldgrip my heart every afternoonat 3 p.m. when they calledout the names of the peoplewho had won the lottery tostay in a bed that night.

Significant Results Achieved Due to Rise in Agency AwardsThe grants given to eight legal service providers enable them to serve 23,000 low-income people. SVCLS awarded nearly$379,226 to eight beneficiary agencies, up from $336,846 in2004, for an increase of nearly 13%. Each beneficiary agency’sboard of directors determines the best and most effective use ofthese monies, thus ensuring support for the most urgent clientneeds and program priorities. Organizations receive a proportionalshare of the funds raised.

Visibility and Interest Continue to Grow!The campaign continues to garner statewide interest and recogni-tion. Julie Emede, 2005 Chair of the Santa Clara County BarAssociation, was invited to speak about pro bono services, andSVCLS in particular, before the California State Assembly'sJudiciary Committee in November.

Thanks to a continued and generous advertising donation fromThe Recorder, and marketing communications support fromAllison Blattel Professional Services Group, a division of Allison & Partners, SVCLS continues to challenge the legal community toincrease its support of SVCLS. The “Ready. Set. Challenge!” adver-tising campaign also provides recognition for our donor family.

Significant Results Achieved Due to Rise in Agency AwardsThe grants given to eight legal service providers enable them to serve 23,000 low-income people. SVCLS awarded nearly$379,226 to eight beneficiary agencies, up from $336,846 in2004, for an increase of nearly 13%. Each beneficiary agency’sboard of directors determines the best and most effective use ofthese monies, thus ensuring support for the most urgent clientneeds and program priorities. Organizations receive a proportionalshare of the funds raised.

Visibility and Interest Continue to Grow!The campaign continues to garner statewide interest and recogni-tion. Julie Emede, 2005 Chair of the Santa Clara County BarAssociation, was invited to speak about pro bono services, andSVCLS in particular, before the California State Assembly'sJudiciary Committee in November.

Thanks to a continued and generous advertising donation fromThe Recorder, and marketing communications support fromAllison Blattel Professional Services Group, a division of Allison & Partners, SVCLS continues to challenge the legal community toincrease its support of SVCLS. Client CasesInspire Our ActionDonors and beneficiary agencies joined together in celebration of the sixth annual SVCLS distribution of funds on October 19,2005. Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP graciouslyhosted the event, which was attended by over 100 attorneys and supporters from the community.

Clients shared their meaningful, personal stories – includingrelating the circumstances that led them to seek legal assistanceand acknowledging the impact of the legal assistance theyreceived due to SVCLS funding. Here are just two of many client cases this year:

SARA SHARES HER STORY:I worked two or three jobs at a time in order to provide for mychildren. Little by little I saved to buy a home for my family.

I was lucky to find a property I could afford and secured anaffordable mortgage. Everything was going well until I went tothe mortgage company to pay my monthly bill and a salesmanproposed I refinance my property to save money. Instead of sav-ing money, the loan almost cost my children and me our home.

The loan company took advantage of my inability to speakEnglish well. They negotiated the terms of the loan in Spanishand lied in the English language documents. The mortgagelender also lied to me about the fees and interest rate and submitted false and forged documents to get approval for theloan. When the true cost of the loan was revealed to me, I could not pay the monthly charges and my home went into foreclosure.

I am happy to say that with the help oflegal services lawyers, my children and Iremain in our home. I want to thank theselawyers and urge you to support servicesthat make it possible for low-income people to benefit from American justice.

WAN YING SHARES THIS STORY WITH US:When I sought help from a legal servicesagency, I was living in a domestic violenceshelter and was hopeless about my future.

After we legally immigrated to the U.S. at the invitation of my son, my husbandwas diagnosed with Alzheimer’s andbecame increasingly violent. My son

blamed me for my husband’s condition and kicked me out ofhis home. I was in and out of hospitals and shelters for over

six months. I did not speak English and knew nothing aboutAmerica. I just went where my social worker told me to go, and applied for things she told me to apply for. I did not knowmy rights.

The SILICON VALLEY CAMPAIGN FOR LEGAL SERVICES(SVCLS) provides funds to increase the effectiveness and abilityof non-profit legal services agencies to assist men, women andchildren of all ages, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. Theorganization supports individuals who cannot afford to hire anattorney in civil cases and whose legal rights would otherwise gounrecognized and/or unenforced. Funds raised from the legalcommunity in Silicon Valley and from surrounding areas are distributed to agencies that provide civil legal services directly tothe poor. SVCLS also works to encourage the legal communityto become more involved in the provision of pro bono legalassistance. The Silicon Valley Campaign for Legal Services is arecipient of the American Bar Association’s prestigious HarrisonTweed award, with the Santa Clara County Bar Association, for leadership in expanding and developing support for the provision of free legal services to the poor.

Campaign Mission

Over 521,000 people in Silicon Valley—30% of the popula-tion—qualify for special help due to income, age or disability.These individuals’ critical legal issues are primarily related to:

●● health care;●● the ability to secure and preserve affordable and

fair housing;●● family law issues such as domestic violence, child

custody and divorce;●● economic stability;●● special problems of the elderly;●● consumer fraud, debt collection abuses and other

unfair practices;●● immigration; and●● employment.

The people who receive SVCLS assistance have “poverty level”incomes far below the amount actually needed to live in SiliconValley. Many of these individuals are the working poor. For afamily of three (such as a mother and two children) the federalpoverty level is $16,600/year – well below the Self-SufficiencyStandard for Santa Clara County of $65,589. Many such fami-lies cannot afford even their basic needs without assistance.

Silicon Valley-based legal services agencies lack the financialresources needed to meet the legal needs of our community’spoorest residents. We therefore need and welcome the legalcommunity’s pro bono actions and financial support.

we are able to continue to provide legal services to those who cannot afford representation. Low-income women, men and families from diverse backgrounds can access expertise from legal services agencies because of your support for the Silicon Valley Campaign for Legal Services.

Our work is an ongoing effort, one that rewards us all in a number of positive ways.During the last year, we made major strides that realized a number of important achievements and successes.

Our campaign has reached a major milestone, raising $500,000 this year as we progress over the next three to five years toward our goal of raising $1 million annually. It is through your professional and personal commitment, and generosity that we have achieved this. SVCLS is gaining strength and extending its impact. Six new members representing area law firms became board members, and two new General Counsel Committee members added their expertise to our organization.
