Our storyThe story of Sika-Design begins in 1942 when my grandfather Ankjær Andreas-en produced the first batch of baskets, lamps, flower tables and other smaller in-terior items made of rush and willow. In the 1950’ties he expanded his produc-tion to include a series of furniture made from rattan, and the company Sika Møbler was firmly established.

The rattan was imported from the Far East and my grandfather travelled there to buy rattan for his wicker makers in Denmark. During a trip in 1972, he decided to establish a wicker furniture factory in Malaysia. Since then, the Far East has been essential to our production of furniture, and today we manufacture our furniture in our own factory in Indonesia. My father Knud Andreasen took over the com-pany in 1983, however my grandfather still continued his daily “inspection” rounds in the company until his death in 1997. In 2001 Sika acquired its biggest compet-itor in rattan furniture “Møbelfabrikken Horsnæs est. 1940” and today the com-pany name is Sika-Design.

On my 10th birthday, my father allowed me to attend a fair where Sika Møbler was exhibiting a series of furniture. On that day, I knew I wanted to be a part of his company, and my passion for rattan furniture was started. Since 1996 we have worked side-by-side bringing Sika-Design into the new century, while never let-ting go of our strong heritage and values of good craftsmanship and design.

AffAire The Affaire collection is a combination of the amazing natural resource, Rattan and the fantastic man-made synthetic fibre. The frames are made of rattan and the woven seats and backs, and the bindings are all made of Polystrand synthet-ic fiber.

The designs in this collection are our own, and some of them date back to the 50’ties and 60’ties, and you will find some of the same in our Originals collection.

Affaire is designed for the upper end cafés, brassieres and restaurants in histori-cal European cities and capitals all over the world. Affaire is also an elegant choice for Riviera’s along waterfronts all over the world.

rATTANFor the collection Affäire, only first class rattan is used. Rattan is a plant related to the palm tree, and grows in the Indonesian rainforest. Rattan is one of the fastest grow-ing materials in the world, it regenerates in 5-7 years and it transforms CO2 into clean air. It is a fact that 80% of the world’s rattan is growing in Indonesia where we manu-facture the furniture in our own factory.

For the Affaire collection we use the rattan as nature made it! This means we do not remove the skin and the knots of the rattan and therefore we can leave it unlacquered. The skin of the rattan will serve as its natural protection.

CrAfTSMANSHiPThe processing of the rattan material is very complex but yet the same techniques which have been used for centuries . The only way to work with Rattan is by applying the tra-ditional century –old method and do not require heavy machinery. The traditional meth-od was perfected in Denmark by skilled canemakers in the 70’s. The complexity is in-creased in the combination of natural raw material, the synthetic fibre and precise assembling techniques.

Each chair is meticulously handcrafted in our factory in Indonesia only using the finest rattan and stainless steel nails and screws. First the rattan frame of the chair is steamed and hand formed after which each chair frame is then hand woven with Polystrand fi-bre. These materials and precise craftsmanship produce a chair that is durable, light weight and very strong which can last for years.

POLYSTrANDPolystrand is a weather resistant synthetic fibre. The fibre is easily recyclable. Due to the basic structure, the fibre can be melted down and re-used over and over with very lit-tle damage to the polymer change in the fibre.

rATTAN USeD OUTDOOrSRattan is the only material that can be harvested in nature and used for furniture with-out any processing.

The skin of the rattan is very strong and hardwearing and therefore suitable for out-door use. However its natural colour will in time turn silvery grey. This transformation is very beautiful and adds character to the furniture.

The cane will stay strong for years however the appearance will change.

Wicker furniture will last longer if not exposed to water or excessive sun. Rattan furni-ture used on covered patios and terraces will last for generations.

• Rattan is often confused with bamboo, but rattan is massive and bamboo is hollow.

• If you can bend it, it is 99% sure rattan.
