Note: * Mechanical values obtained from longitudinal direction of fibres. ** These values should be used for design as the maximum strains in CFRP plates and must be adapted to local design regulations as necessary. Dependent upon the structure and the load situation, they may also have to be decreased by the responsible Engineer according to requirements and standards.

Notes on Design General remarks Sika CarboDur-laminate has no plastic deformation reserve. Therefore the maximum bending resistance of a strengthened section is reached when laminated failure occurs during steel yield and before concrete failure. The mode of failure is influenced by the laminate cross-section. To limit crack widths and deformation the yield point should not be reached in the reinforcing bars under service conditions. Any shear cracks which occur must be prevented from causing displacement on the strengthened surface and shearing of the laminate. Stress and deformation calculations can be made by the normal methods. They should be verified in accordance with standards SIA 160 (1989) and 162 (1989). Procedure for assessing the condition of the structure Dimension (geometry, reinforcement, evenness of surface to be strengthened), quality of existing construction materials, ambient climatic conditions, agreed conditions of service.

Verification Bearing safety : Non strengthened structure (with allowance for a reduced total safety factor =

1.0) Strengthened structure (with the mode of failure described above, check on the

strains) Shearing of laminate Anchorages Fatigue resistance : Check on concrete and steel stresses Serviceability : Deformation (with average strains, assuming elastic behaviour of the structure

and time based strain changes in the concrete) Steel stressed (no plastic deformation in service conditions). Crack widths (by limiting the steel stresses in service conditions)

Instruction for Use Substrate Quality Evenness / plane or level

The surface to be strengthened must be leveled, with variations and formwork marks not greater than 0.50 mm. Plane and level of the substrate to be checked with a metal batten. Tolerance for 2 m length max. 5 mm and for 0.30 m length 1 mm. Substrate strength (concrete, masonry, natural stone) must be verified in all cases Minimum adhesive strength of the prepared concrete substrate is 1.5 N/mm2. (if these values can not be reached, then see the SikaWrap Fabric Technical Data Sheet for alternative Sika solutions Concrete must be older than 28 days

Substrate Preparation Concrete : Substrate must be sound, dry, clean and free from laitance, ice, standing water, grease, oils, old surface treatments or coatings and all loosely adhering particles. Concrete must be cleaned and prepared to achieve a laitance and contaminants free, open textured surface. Preparation: Blast-clean, scabble or grind. If there are large blowholes on the concrete surface, these must first be filled with structural repair material such as Sikadur 741 repair mortar. The Sikadur-30 adhesive must be used as a bonding layer to ensure a good bond with the concrete substrate. Timber : Clean, free from grease and oil, no loose particles. Preparation: Planing, grinding or sanding. Dust must be removed by vacuum Plate preparation : Immediately prior to the application of Sikadur 30, solvent wipe the bonding surface with Sika Colma Cleaner to remove contaminants. Wait until the surface is dry before applying the adhesive.

    Application Instructions

Mixing Pre-dosed Pack of Sikadur 30 : Stir the material well in the original containers. Add component B to component A. Mix with an electric low speed hand mixer (max. 500 rpm) for about 3 minutes to uniform appearance. Entrain as little air as possible. The pot life begins when the resin and hardener are mixed. It is shorter at high temperatures and longer at low temperatures. The greater the quantity mixed, the shorter the pot life. To obtain longer workability at high temperatures, the mixed adhesive may be divided into portions. Another method is to chill components A and B before mixing them.

Application Place the Sika Carbodur plate on a table and clean the unlabelled side with Colma Cleaner using a white rag. Apply the well-mixed Sikadur 30 adhesive with a special dome shaped spatula onto the cleaned Carbodur laminate. Apply the Sikadur 30 adhesive carefully to the properly cleaned and prepared substrate, with a spatula to form a thin layer. Within the open time of the adhesive, place the Sikadur 30 coated Sika Carbodur plate onto the Sikadur 30 coated concrete surface. Using a Sika rubber roller, press the plate into the adhesive until the material is forced out on both sides of the laminate. Remove surplus adhesive. Intersection / multiple layers Where there are to be plate intersections or crossovers, the first Sika Carbodur plate should be degreased with Sika Colma Cleaner before overlaying with adhesive and the second plate applied.

Cleaning Clean tools immediately with Colma Cleaner. Wash hand and skin thoroughly in warm soap water. Before curing Sikadur-30 components A+B are a water pollutant and should not be discharged into drains, waterways or soil. Colma Cleaner and Sikadur-30 residues must always be disposed of properly. Cured material can only be removed mechanically.

Important Notes A suitably qualified Engineer must be responsible for the design of the strengthening works.

This application is structural and great care must be taken in selecting suitably experienced and trained specialist labourers.

Only apply plates within the open time of Sikadur 30. Care must be taken when cutting the plates. Use suitable protective clothing,

gloves, eye protection and respirator. The Sika CarboDur system must be protected from permanent exposure to direct

sunlight. Maximum admissible service temperature is +50oC. The instructions in the Technical Data Sheet must be followed when applying

    Sikadur - 30 adhesive.
