The Lord’s Temple Upon their return home from exile, the Jews could not believe what had been left of their once
cherished homeland with all the destruction and desolation they saw. It was quite a humiliating scene
for them as they tried to come to terms with reality. They had become vulnerable as they experienced
PESS (Post Exilic Stress Syndrome). They were faced with more questions than answers in the midst
of their helplessness and hopelessness. They felt helpless because they felt God’s absence, even
though he had been with them throughout their exile and brought them back as he promised.
Hopeless in looking at the current state of affairs and wondering if there was even any hope for the
future. Under such circumstance the thought of God had become remote even to consider the
rebuilding of the temple which they had been tasked with. So, they began with their own rebuilding
plans focusing on their houses. Soon they were able to build homes for themselves while the temple
laid in ruins.
Much of their predicament was imagining how the old Solomon temple looked like with its
magnificence, splendor and glory as had been shared from generation to generation. The elderly who
were around to see it built cherished it forever, but the younger generation with little or no prior
knowledge of it gave it less attention. This conflict led to the struggle and lack of urgency to rebuild
the temple. Where should they start and who will guide them in fulfilling such a mission. It was
during such times that the word of the Lord came to the prophet Haggai who appeared on the scene to
remind them of their commitment. Haggai called them to task about their houses while the Lord’s
temple laid in ruins. He reminded them of their circumstances and no progress being made due to
their selfishness and forgetting the God who had always been faithful to them. Haggai called on them
to abandon their worldly ways and trust that, the God who had always been with them will again help
them in rebuilding of the temple.
The story of the Jews offers great lessons for us from their experiences in life too. Speaking of being in
exile, how often do we find ourselves in exile by relying on our own human thoughts? Much as we try
to live by our pride and other means as many have done, we still lack peace and comfort as God seems
remote. And yet God even under such circumstances, like a loving parent, gets our attention through
the Haggai’s that we meet to remind us of whose we are! We are God’s and our bodies are the temple
of God which must be clean. That even though through our own desires we ruined it, with his love
through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ we have been restored and promised a future of hope and
glory. Amen

Who’s in the Pew?
Shirley Kinsey
Shirley was born on December 11, 1934 to Raymond and Nottie Gossert in Hoopeston, Illinois. She
was 1 of 10 children, only 2 are still living.
She met her husband Cliff in 1952 at a dance and they were married February 20, 1954 in Hoopeston.
They have 2 sons and twin girls, 11 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. When they were first
married, they lived in Columbus, Ohio where Cliff was stationed in the Air Force and while there she
worked at Children’s Hospital.
She has lived in Burlington for over 50 years and has been a member of our church since 1967. She
has served on various committees usually involved in fundraising. She was co-chair with Judy Vande
Sande in getting the Salad Luncheon started.
In her spare time, she likes to read off her iPad, especially the Bible. She enjoys crocheting and has
made blankets for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In the past she volunteered at the Burlington Memorial Hospital. She enjoys our Bible Study group
on Tuesday mornings and her smile makes our morning!
Our church family has been blessed having you and Cliff in it!
GOD BLESS!

Secret Sisters
Throughout the year you can do various acts of kindness for your Secret
Sister: Birthday & Anniversary Cards, little gifts that reflect her hobbies or
interests, a special gift at Christmas or her birthday. These are just a few
ideas. Be sure to keep this a secret.
Richter’s Funds for Friends
Due to Richter’s Marketplace closing, there will no longer be a Funds for Friends program. Therefore,
we will no longer be collecting your grocery receipts. We are sorry this has ended and we appreciate
the support our church has received from Richter’s. Thanks to all who participated in this program
and a special thanks to Lee Getka who collected, totaled, and turned in the receipts to the store for

Health and Wellness Committee
The committee has been working with Advocate Aurora to enable us to provide
valuable information to our congregation. The articles are provided by
Advocate Health Care, featuring different topics each month. Following is
October’s article.
Get Your Zzzz’s to
Prevent Diabetes!
The study found that not enough sleep leads to a reduction in the sensitivity to insulin, which impairs
the ability to regulate blood sugar. A lack of sleep has been tied to weight gain, but with this new
information sleep can also be equated to metabolism.
“Sleep is obviously an important piece in overall health,” says Lauren Saujani, nurse practitioner at
Advocate Dreyer Medical Clinic in Aurora, IL. “This adds another piece to the puzzle for us to discuss
with our patients and stress the importance of a total healthy lifestyle.”
Studies have shown that sleep is
important to overall health. Now,
researchers at the University of
Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus
and University of Colorado Boulder
have found that a lack of sleep could
also lead to an increased risk of
diabetes.
Church Ministries (Continued)
Regulating blood sugar levels is a crucial component of monitoring diabetes. When people are sleep
deprived, the body urges them to rest and as a result their body makes it more difficult to break down
the food, causing a spike in blood sugar levels. “Everything that goes into your body when you are
diabetic can make a huge impact,” says Saujani. “While more research is needed, this study gives us
a good insight on how we can help those who are at risk for becoming diabetic.”
Prayer: In our busy world, help us to value ourselves enough to rest
and take care of ourselves that we might live well.

“Heavenly Tidbits”
A “Jack of All Trades,” Cliff Kinsey did many things around our church. His
biggest project was building the cabinets in the pantry of our kitchen and the
office.
Cliff passed away this past January, but we will remember him every time we walk into the pantry!!
Thanks Cliff!!
