4X4 Earth 4wd Club David Raeburn from the Bairnsdale 4WD Club attended the Victorian get together for the members of 4x4 Earth Club, this was held on Donnellys Creek at O'Tooles camping ground,

the shelter gazebo there was built by volunteers from 4x4 Earth and much of the maintenance of the historic sites in the area is done by the club. 4x4 Earth has a membership of over 50,000 Australia wide with members even joining from overseas it is an internet based club and is free to join on line the online forum is well run and very helpful. THE CAMPGROUND The function was attended by 83

vehicles and 200 people with some from as far away as the Gold Coast, there was a large contingent from NSW and South Australia, the event was really well run and there were no problems of any kind. Grumpy from Traralgon ran trips to the historic sites along Donnelys Creek and gave a very interesting commentary on the pioneers and gold prospectors in the area, we even got to see a huge gold battery on private land, it is the only 10 head crusher that I have ever seen and it is driven by a 4 cylinder Southern Cross engine, it was decommissioned in the 1960s, the battery was made by Thompson Engineers and foundry in Castlemaine. TEN HEAD BATTERY CRUSHER. There were drives organised during the day with numbers in each group kept to a sensible safe number, also there were night drives for some of the more adventurous people.

Saturday afternoon there was a duck race where each duck is purchased by members and they are all placed in the creek at the same time, the first duck to pass the finish line, 100 metres or so down the creek, is the winner. There was much cheering and barracking for the winner. The raffle was held near the shelter in the late afternoon, there were some really good prizes donated and several thousand dollars were raised for charity, many of the prizes won, were then donated back to be auctioned and these brought good prices as well. One amusing incident was when a Jeep door was put in the raffle, it came from a members vehicle, he was surprised to see it and bought tickets to try to win it back but the winning ticket was held by someone else who said he did not want a jeep, let alone a door off one and so donated it back to be auctioned with a bid of a thousand dollars. After much laughter, he withdrew the bid and the owner bought it back for $5. THE SALE OF THE JEEP DOOR I am always amazed at the level of friendship and goodwill at these events, everybody mixes and makes new friends and helps anybody in trouble or needing information. It was a great weekend and all proceeds go to local charities.

There was much

discussion on the closure of areas to access by the people. The people from the other states keep saying how lucky we are here in Victoria to have access to our forests, as much of their state is locked

up with no access, except by walking, this making it impossible for most of the population to see our great country. We only hope that by working with D.E.P.I, 4WD Victoria and National Parks and doing the right thing, we can continue to enjoy our heritage and the beautiful state we live in. Thanks must go to 4x4 Earth and the volunteers who make this event and others like it possible for the benefit of all, including local businesses near where the events are held by putting large amounts of money into the local economy. Yowyungoo Gorge

We left the Great Central Rd. and headed the 60k up the Carnegie Rd to Empress Spring so named by David Carnegie on his 1896 expedition. Access is via a hole in the rocks, and a wobbly ladder down into the cave. The spring was dry. If you were game, you could climb up the original old wooden poles that were still there. The next stop was a 1.5k track into John Forests old camp 59,, which was used on his expedition from Geraldton to the Overland Telegraph Line in 1874. The tree had an old blaze mark, and a visitors book.nearby.

A 3.5k walk Nth took us to Windich Rockhole that was half full of very green water. The track had been good up to Empress Spring but over the last 140k to camp 59 it had deteriorated. Into the lake country now with the last 40k to Mungilli Claypan and The Gunbarrel Hwy through long stretches of mud and water, with a nice camp spot found on the shores of the lake. Next morning it was off to the Eagle Hwy? past Mungilli Outstation which is now inhabited, and on to Eagle Hussar Bore. It was here we picked up an old shot line that headed east for 50 k. It had old tyre marks on it and was easy to follow. Along the track there were lots of dead camels, maybe it was used for culling the large herds of camels. We then headed north and picked up a track that went to Walgoobaloo Rockhole but after wandering around for an hour found nothing but Quad bike tracks. The track continued onto to Babul Rockhole but we could not find that either. We headed out past Mt Madley on to Katu Katu well but that was well hidden also. Camped the night . Rain started during the night and continued all morning. The track disappeared once into the sand country ,,so we made our own way stopping now and again due to overheating in the wet ,soft sand. Now and again we picked up the track on the rocky country, but hard to follow in the sand. After driving through long grass for a while we popped out at Barragudingu Soak and a small running creek with fresh water so it was tub time. Signed the visitor’s can that was hidden in a cairn next to the rock hole. Picked up the track

again and followed it to Birril Rockhole with a few punctures on the way , and then across the plains and long grass to the Mungkulu Hills and the track heading into Yowyungoo Gorge. A short walk up the gorge brings you to a pool and a trickle of water going over a waterfall. Further up the gorge the walls get higher with caves high up and lots of aboriginal art along the west wall consisting of paintings and hieroglyphics chipped into the surface of the rocks. Lots to explore here.
