Challenge

International Place is known throughout New Englandas a prestigious location for Class A businesses. Boasting1.8 million square feet of total office, retail space, andprominent restaurants. Chiofaro Management, one ofNew England’s most influential developers andoperators of first class commercial space, contactedSIGNET when International Place needed a plan forthe replacement of their aging Autocall fire alarmsystem, in the occupied 46-story high-rise building. The plan needed to balance the concerns of the localfire department during the transition which meantthe building would have 100% system coverage at alltimes, while minimizing any disturbance to the buildingtenants. The project also needed to bring newtechnology to the building by converting from aconventional to an addressable system withoutexcessive cost and project duration.

Solution

SIGNET provided a solution that recycled the majorityof the existing fire alarm system’s wiring infrastructure, which consisted of the initiating device wiring on eachof the floors. This allowed the devices to be replacedquickly and effectively with little disturbance to thetenants. Implementation began with the installationof the backbone for the new addressable system.Next, a cross-connect was created to establishcommunications between the old and new systems. This allowed for a seamless transition as the newsystem took over the functionality of the old system.SIGNET’s approach to this complex project includedreplacement from the top down. As a result of anextensive pre-execution plan, SIGNET was able todeliver the new system to the owner in a seamlessmanner. At no point in the project was the facilitywithout a fire alarm system. The Boston FireDepartment found SIGNET’s approach to be completeand comprehensive thus, not requiring a fire watch.SIGNET’s ability to produce an effective work planand manage its union electrical subcontractorcontributed largely to the success of this project.

International Placeneeded to bring new

technology to the buildingby converting a

conventional system toan addressable systemwithout excessive costand project duration.

ProductsSIGNET’s fire detection and alarm systemsprotect people and property in countlessbuildings and facilities throughout NewEngland. From a single building to a largecampus environment with a network ofsystems, our products protect every typeand size of operation. Challenge

The administrators and security personnel of theRhode Island Judiciary desired a solution to secureand monitor the multiple courthouse facilitiesthroughout the state of Rhode Island. A courthouseis a challenging facility to secure due to the diversenature of the people requiring access to differentareas of the building and segregation of access betweenthose areas. This segregation is critical. Several of thefacilities were built under new construction contractswhile others were renovations to existing buildings.A primary goal for this client was a homogeneoussystem for all their facilities. The client also hadover 4,000 personnel with existing credentials;re-credentialing was not an option.

Solution

SIGNET met those challenges and successfullycompleted the deployment of a single access controland video surveillance security system platform at allof the Rhode Island Judiciary Facilities. The databaseof their existing credentials was successfully convertedand imported into the new access control system;providing a seamless transition from their existingsystem to the new system.

The new system provides the administrators andsecurity personnel with a robust and flexible securitysystem to control and monitor access to their facilities. The system allows the access requirements to bechanged based upon the area of the facility, time ofday or threat level. This allowed administrators tospecify areas that can be accessed using a card only,or a card swipe. As a result, photo IDs are thenelectronically presented to security for screeningpurposes. The system provides a single user interfaceto monitor access in and out of the facility along withvideo surveillance of the access points.

SIGNET continues to support the Rhode IslandJudiciary with an extensive long-term service andsupport agreement and further expansion of theirsystems.

A primary goalfor Rhode IslandJudiciary was a

homogenous systemfor all their facilities

without having tore-issue 4,000 existingpersonnel credentials.

Challenge

The University of Massachusetts’ plan for the 18,000square foot Venture Development Center includedspace for laboratory research and the ability to recordand present results within the state-of-the art facility,as well as, the ability to communicate with anyone inthe world using digital videoconferencing via theinternet. The space design included four wet labs, twodry labs, a presentation room, two work space areas,a kitchen/coffee bar, and a display wall. The projectrequired control and integration of multiple audiovisual sources through the use of a single touch panelcontrol unit located in each room. Several connectiontypes, manufacturer product changes, and differentcable types created difficult challenges. An additionaldilemma included the installation of the nine footwide, five hundred pound plasma display. A uniquesolution would have to be implemented not only toget the display into the limited access building, butalso mounted onto the wall.

Solution

SIGNET provided a state-of-the-art audio visual systemincluding twelve 50” plasma screens, four 40” LCDs,eight Crestron touch panels including a wireless model, custom designed touch screen interface, twenty-fouromni-directional ceiling microphones, soundreinforcement speakers, multiple PC input plates, twodigital IP video conferencing codecs, four digital signageunits and one of the world’s largest plasma televisions,a 103” model from Panasonic. Throughout this ventureSIGNET’s project management team kept in constantcontact with the end-user outlining progress andpotential pitfalls, and acquired the information necessaryfor the touch screen interface. Through the use ofSIGNET’s vast resources and creative managementstaff, the plasma display was hoisted onto the thirdfloor mezzanine with a crane while the installationutilized mechanical material lifts to elevate the displayto the mount. The project installation lastedapproximately nine months and was completed withinthe project deadline.

The project requiredcontrol and integrationof multiple audio-visualsources through the useof a single touch panelcontrol unit located in

each room.
