“Writing is thinking on paper.” -William Zinsser

What is Graphology?

Graphology is the study of handwriting. As

a theory or practice for inferring a person's character, disposition, and attitudes from their handwriting, graphology is generally considered pseudoscience. The term is sometimes incorrectly used to refer to forensic document examination.

Handwriting: Handwriting refers to a person's unique style of writing characters

created with a writing utensil such as a pen or pencil. Because each person's handwriting is unique, it can be used to verify a document's writer. The deterioration of a person's handwriting is also a symptom or result of certain diseases.

Characteristics of handwriting include:• specific shape of letters, e.g. their roundness or sharpness• regular or irregular spacing between letters• the slope of the letters• the rhythmic repetition of the elements• the pressure to the paper• the average size of letters

Signature:

A signature is a handwritten (and often stylized) depiction of someone's name, nickname, or even a simple "X" or other mark that a person writes on documents as a proof of identity and intent. The writer of a signature is a signatory or signer. Similar to a handwritten signature, a signature work describes the work as readily identifying its creator. It is a person's name written in a distinctive way as a form of identification in authorizing a cheque or document or concluding a letter.

Significance of Analyzing Handwriting and Signature

Your handwriting reveals so much about your personality. In fact, a well trained graphologist can recognize over a hundred personality traits in just one page of a handwritten letter. While the body of the writing shows the person’s day-to-day personality, the signature is like his nicely taken picture, for it shows how he wants to appear to the world around him. It is like a business card that represents how the person wants to be perceived by others and how he thinks others think of him. Therefore, oftentimes you’ll notice that the body of writing differs greatly from the signature; it is like an ordinary day’s clothing (body of writing) compared with your Sunday’s best (signature) where you only want to show off your best for people to see.

Your self-image can be determined by analyzing your signature. It will reveal your social skills, how you relate to your parents, how honest you are, your stability, confidence level, and how you compare yourself to others. Those traits will be shown in the size of your signature, if it is slanting to the left or right, size of first name versus last name, how large or small the initial letters are, if there are any additional strokes above, under, or directly on the signature, pressure, length and width of individual strokes, where it is placed in relation to the rest of the writing, as well as many other details.

Detailed Signature Analysis of Some Great People

Mukesh AmbaniAnil AmbaniRatan Tata

Mukesh Ambani’s Signature Analysis

The straight signature reveals that the RIL Chairman and Managing Director is a man who has a good head on his shoulders. He keeps his cool even in crises and endures trying circumstances. He does not allow his emotions to interfere with his decisions and relies consistently on his mind for directions. Heart has very little role to play in his day-to-day life and impulsiveness is absolutely out of the question. However, he has a limited stock of patience.

The cup-like formations in the connections between letters in the signature show Mukesh is overburdened, that some of the things currently going on in his life are getting him down. The size of the first letter in the signature testifies that he is a man with full faith in himself. And he likes to tell the world that he is the best at what he does.

The size of his signature and the absence of diacritics (marks added to letters) indicate that Mukesh hates paying attention to details. Mostly, he likes to skim through things. Well, as the Chairman and MD, it behoves him to pay more attention to the larger picture rather than every single detail. He depends heavily on the suggestions of his think-tank before making decisions. Mukesh readily believes people around him and he is prone to be misled because he thinks really fast—often without feeling the need to stop and cross-check.

Deep down, Mukesh often feels the big family name he carries has stifled his growth as an individual. He can’t imagine himself as just Mukesh; he has to be an Ambani. I can’t say whether he believes in God, but he likes to associate some significance to religious values. He is self-conscious and is concerned about what people say about him.

If Mukesh Ambani is your boss: Do not try to convince him without using logic. If you don’t have logic to prove your point, he may throw you out of his cabin.

Anil Ambani’s Signature Analysis

The right slant of his signature reveals that the ADAG (Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group) Chairman is an impulsive

person. The man is driven by the heart. Remember those long, emotional emails he wrote to his brother before the division of the empire? Under extreme emotional pressure, Anil may find it difficult to stop himself from breaking down—but only in private. He is easily moved by a heartrending story and may make decisions on impulse.

Now, notice the circle around the first name of his signature. The circle, which camouflages the first name, shows he gets very defensive in public. Such writers have a problem making friends from their own field because they do not open up and are always scared of getting hurt. Understandably, Anil has more friends outside the corporate world.

Anil feels he is misunderstood by his own people and therefore likes to keep his opinions to himself. More often than not, he fears that others don’t understand him. He feels betrayed and gets hurt easily. Since childhood, Anil has consistently found someone in his life who dominates him. By looking at the signatures of the two brothers, it’s clear that the elder brother made the younger one feel less important. Here’s a simple exercise: place Mukesh’s signature over Anil’s. You’ll notice that the elder brother’s signature completely overshadows the younger’s signature.

Anil, here’s a small suggestion: enlarge the ‘A’—the first letter of your name—in your signature. Write your full name and surname and retain the underline below. The results may surprise you.

If Anil Ambani is your boss: Never pry into his private life. He wants to maintain his privacy and won’t like any intrusions.

Ratan Tata’s Signature Analysis

This man has exemplary persistence. Notice the long down stroke in the ‘N’—the first letter of his middle name. The longer the stroke below the baseline, the more enduring the determination. The heavier the stroke, the more forceful and strong the persistence. If the down stroke is short, the writer’s determination lasts for a short while. But if it is as long as Tata’s, the writer’s determination is long-lasting. The Nano is a shining example of this: it was launched many years after he made the promise and despite all the hurdles Mamata Banerjee created for him in Bengal.

Tata’s signature also shows that he has a hidden strength that makes him all the more determined in the face of obstacles. At first, it may appear he is going to bend when pushed, but the rougher the situation, the more determined Tata is to see it through to the finish.

Now, look at the floating t-bar in Ratan. Such a stroke in handwriting indicates that the writer is a dreamer, and that he dreams the impossible. He has a great deal of energy and can carry on through the day without much fatigue. He also has an amazing memory and a very good sense of colour.

Ratan Tata is a very emotional person. Yes, he feels very strongly about everything. But he never expresses himself on impulse. He has amazing control and full faith in what he is doing (notice an impeccably straight baseline in “Ratan”). This unwavering baseline indicates the writer has good willpower and handles unexpected situations without getting distracted and finds a way around obstacles.

If Ratan Tata is your boss: Make sure you become a part of his persistence and determination. Avoid suggesting an easier route because once Mr Tata has made up his mind, it’s unlikely he will change it.

Some More Signatures Of Some Great Personalities All

Over The World

Gandhi absorbed the condition of the people around him in every way he could--through the very sensory pores of his skin, by appreciating their words, and by his habitually inquiring mind. Unyielding determination and decisiveness characterized his actions.

He did not like to be contained or limited by others and could develop intense resentment about this. Yet a near-perfect sense of rhythm and order plus a visionary goal sense, will power, and careful placement of details formed a mental structure well suited to the discoveries he made.

Patient and concerned with values and principles (shown in the last two letters of his first name), he may be losing interest in what he's doing. The dish-shape in his t-bar suggests 'been there done that.'

The unusual, repeated exploratory/analytical strokes in his last name shows a rare, incisive mind. In the service of his instinct for diplomacy, it made him a world-class persuader. Ego, instability, bluff, and exaggeration, however, were his undoing.

Cravings for attention show up in the structure of his letter d, suggesting unmet emotional needs. Through an array of strong creative traits he buried himself in his work. Uneasiness with emotional expression led him to suppress emotional outlets, leaving him with assorted frustrations.

His diplomacy, loyalty to basic mainstream values, and openness to others gave him human appreciation. What distinguished him, however, was that he could draw on this understanding to exert his all-encompassing interest in creating with big ideas.

His consistent, warm feelings and unusual ability to imagine the impact of his actions on others enabled him to relish the effect of his signature on King George III. The tasteful underscore says both that he was ready to stand on his own feet and be seen for his actions, yet, in alignment with his basically conservative nature, to do so with restraint.

His emotional connection to his surroundings dominates his thinking rather than ideas. He has an innate sense of rhythm, a strong desire to express what he feels inside, and an exaggerated craving for attention yet discomfort with it.

Last but not least is a creative signature (check out Walt Disney and Edgar Allan Poe). It takes a courageous, self assured (but not arrogant) person to add some extra touches to his signature (flourishes for example). It is a sign of creativity, but if you see objects (Liberace used to sketch a piano under his name) being drawn in/near a signature (clubs, money signs, faces) it is time to run away. Those people may be dealing with some deeper personal issues with which you don’t want to get involved.

Our signatures change slightly with time and different life changing events (illness, trauma) will affect the way we sign our name. No matter how we sign our name, it will always reveal our innermost thoughts and desires.
