Sigma Phi Zeta Chapter

On September 10, 2011, Sigma

Phi Zeta chapter began the so-

rority year on a journey to be-

come “the premier service or-

ganization on the North Shore”.

So how do we define pre-

mier?

For us, premier is

defined not by how many

members we have but how

many lives are touched by

the members we have.

Premier is defined not by

how large our bank accounts

are but how we enlarge the emotional bank

accounts of others.

Premier is not a state of being, it is a state of

doing!

To be the premier

service organization

on the

North Shore...

The women of Sigma Phi Zeta have been busy

doing – doing the business of Zeta. Included in

this edition are a few highlights.

In addition to our service activities, we

celebrated the one year anniversary of

our Amicae auxiliary (Friends of Zeta),

who have also been busy with service

projects of their own.

The youth auxiliaries of Zeta had an active

year, which included 2 events at North-

western University and an Etiquette

Workshop.

Speaking of Northwestern, our under-

graduates, the “Notoriously Smooth”

ladies of Nu Sigma chapter have been

diligently working to be the standard of

excellence on their campus.

As we approach the end of our sorority

year, we have accomplished a lot but the

journey must continue.

We invite you to support us, join us and

serve with us as we move towards our

goal to be the premier

service organization on the North Shore!

On Location!

One of the goals of the

Sigma Phi Zeta

chapter is to provide community ser-

vice to the Lake County and sur-

rounding area. This year we pro-

vided food for a local family shelter

and we served dinner for the families

of Habitat for Humanity.

Unique Greatness: The Zeta Amicae

As early as 1940, graduate chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. had begun to realize the importance of

the prestige, good will and cooperation of women who were not eligible to be members of any Greek-letter

organization. Today, these auxiliaries have rendered invaluable services to the sorority and their

communities. They are located in areas wherever there are active chapters of Zeta Phi Bea Sorority, Inc.

We’d venture to say that the only other group of

women working as hard as us right now is that of

our dear friends, the Zeta Amicae.

These phenomenal ladies not only

support the ideals and initiatives of

our chapter, but also plan and exe-

cute outstanding programs of their

own.

Be it worshipping together, walking

together in service, or just hanging

out at Zeta Game Night, we truly

appreciate having them by our side.

Zeta Amicae of Waukegan

From Girls to Pearls Zeta Youth Groups are comprised of young ladies ages 4-17. Our

Amicettes, Pearlettes,a nd Archonettes learn from us and we from them!.

The ladies of Sigma Phi Zeta believe that the art of being a Finer Woman begins with

being an exceptional girl. We support this ideal by spending time nurturing and devel-

oping the young ladies of Lake County through educational and cultural recrea-

tion. This past year, under the gentle leadership of Soror Valarie Harmon, the youth of

Sigma Phi Zeta have shared a pizza party, participated in an etiquette workshop, spread

holiday cheer through caroling, and more. Bridging the gap, our undergrads of the Nu

Sigma Chapter have also exposed the youth to art programming, a bullying workshop,

and a mini college tour.

Each year Sigma Phi Zeta hosts our Blue and

White Old School Prom to raise scholarship

money for high school female seniors who will

graduate and attend college. We thank everyone for attending the prom or making

a donation. Congratulations to our four award winners of 2011!

2012 recipients will be listed in the next issue of ExpoZé.

An Award-Winning Sisterhood

Our service is selfless, but it is still great to be recognized as a vital part of our community. Sigma Phi Zeta received three ZHOPE awards at the 2011 Illinois State Lead-ership Conference. Trinity AME also recognized the ladies

of Sigma Phi Zeta for outstanding com-

munity Service. The award was given

for three programs that Zeta commit-

ted with the spirit of excellence in2011.

The programs were our youth auxiliary,

Stork’s Nest, and Habitat for Humanity.

The lovely ladies of Zeta Phi Beta Nu

Sigma Chapter are shining examples of

service, scholarship, sisterly love and

Finer Womanhood on the campus of

Northwestern University.

Cooperation

Community Collaborations

On behalf of the outstanding ladies of Zeta Phi Beta - Sigma Phi Zeta Chapter, I

welcome you to this inaugural and very special edition of the Sigma Phi Zeta ExpoZé. It is our hope that this publication will whet your appetite for all things Zeta, while also sharing our celebration of the past year’s accomplishments.

As the newest member of Sigma Phi Zeta chapter, I am honored and proud of the accomplishments of my sisters. Both individually and collectively, we have proven to be members of a higher echelon of women. One that makes changes in this world and cultivates progress. The breadth of knowledge and skill accessible through this chapter are seemingly endless.

We hope that the desire to persevere through obstacles, for the sake of providing meaningful service to the communities of Lake County, is evident in each of our en-deavors. Yet, what I hope is seen also through this mere glimpse of us, is that we are an organization of fun-loving women, who gain as much from our civic work as we do from enjoying one another’s company. Sisterhood, Scholarship, Sisterly Love, and Finer Womanhood are our principles, but they are also our way of life. In Sisterly Love & Blessings,

Sigma Phi Zeta ExpoZé Editor– In-Chief
