Scholarship funding from 2010-2014:

“Receiving the John C. Ale Scholarship will allow me to devote more time for my studies as it will allow me to work fewer hours when I need to be preparing for my tests. I am very thankful and I feel very fortunate to have been elected to receive this scholarship. It is because of people like you that I get closer to achieving my goals every day.”

Dear Fratres and Friends,

At all Sigma Alpha Mu Conventions, participants wear a name/chapter/title badge. Attached to it are ribbons indicating your “role” in the fraternity (e.g., Foundation, Supreme Council, Chapter Officer) On Saturday, an undergraduate (some 50 years younger than I) approached me, saw that I had a ribbon that said “Foundation Director,” and asked me why I volunteer. I smiled and said, “You.” He understood.

The Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation, chartered in 1944, was progressive and prescient when it decided that its primary missions were to “support the educational interests and activities of Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity [and] to furnish student aid…” Few could have predicted what would happen to college tuition since the inception of the Foundation. Tuition, fees, room and board and other expenses can amass to over $50,000 per year for an undergraduate education. During the period of 1978-2010, the Consumer Price Index increased just under three-fold; housing prices increased four-fold; and tuition rose by over ten-fold!

Our alumni have invested in their younger brothers. The Foundation awarded a total of $205,600 in scholarships. These awards included 92 Guller Young Scholars and 134 endowed scholarships, aiding students from 52 colleges and universities. Noteworthy is that 10 of these scholarships, totaling $10,000, were for the daughters of fratres and other students, including students involved with USY (United Synagogue Youth) and NFTY (North American Federation of Temple Youth).

On a per chapter basis, our fraternity awards more scholarship dollars than any other fraternity, a fact in which I take great pride. It is truly the ultimate example of our fraternity’s ideals in action.

In their letters, ΣAM Foundation scholarship recipients have shared meaningful experiences your gifts have supported….

Your continued gifts to the ΣAM Foundation for scholarships and leadership education help enrich the academic and community experiences of our fratres, “now and for all time.”

Thank you for all you do and will do!

Top Scholars

The oldest award that the ΣAM Foundation offers is the Hyman I. Jacobson Top Senior Scholar award. In 2014 the award went to Alexander Weiner (Gamma Tau/Florida) who is a political science major and will be attending law school. As well as achieving an outstanding academic record, Fra Weiner served as Social Chair and Alumni Recorder for his chapter and also as a member of the University of Florida Student Government.

The Top Junior Scholar award honors the collegiate junior with the highest GPA. The 2014 recipient is Daniel Rappin (Sigma Zeta/Indiana University), an account-ing and finance major.

“I am ecstatic and grateful to have learned I am the 2014 recipient of the Hyman I. Jacobson Scholarship. The significance of the award and all it means are not lost upon me, and I am extremely appreciative for the financial support of the Fraternity. I have worked hard to accomplish many things scholastically and personally in my years as an undergraduate at UF, and will continue to do so as I pursue law school and all my other future goals. It means the world to me that my fraternity stands behind such efforts and promote academic achievements so strongly, and I would sincerely like to thank everyone involved in the process.” Alex Weiner Gamma Tau/University of Florida Hyman I. Other Honors

The Glazer Family Jewish Studies Scholarships are the largest scholarships that the Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation offers. In 2014 two $5,000 Glazer Family Scholarships were awarded to Sigma Zeta/Indiana University’s Sam Shulimson and Seth Federer. Sam is majoring in psychology and minoring in Jewish Studies and is a past Sinai Scholar, while Seth is a past Glazer recipient who is a biology major and Jewish Studies minor and continues to work on cancer research projects.

David Dobrynin (Mu Theta/USC) is the 2014 recipient of the $4,000 Les & Bobbi Raffel Scholarship for a student studying engineering. David, who is originally from Ukraine, is an Aerospace Engineering major who is involved with the USC Rocket Propulsion Laboratory, on the Mu Theta Standards board, and also plays in a band called The Vibes. This scholarship was endowed by Fra Les Raffel (Sigma Eta/Purdue) to encourage excellence in all fields of engineering.

The Gormin Trailblazer and Helen Schwartz Scholarships are for outstanding leadership of a colony in becoming a chapter. Joshua Squire (Epsilon Nu/University of Connecticut) who received the Gormin Trailblazer served as recruitment chair and social chair as well as President of Hillel at UConn. John Beck (Gamma Iota/Towson) is a computer science major and served as Prior of his chapter and received the Helen Schwartz Scholarship.

The Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation is proud to work with Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation of Canada, which sponsors three scholarships for Canadian fratres. The 2014 recipients of these scholarships are: Joseph Linzon (Beta Psi/University of Virginia), Pauline & Albert Pattenick Scholarship, a finance major and social chair of his chapter; Kyle LeClair (Delta Pi/University of Ottawa), Samuel Gotfrid Scholarship, a past Guller Young Scholar who served as Delta Pi’s Exchequer and Risk manager; and, Felipe Yanez (Delta Pi/University of Ottawa), Bora Laskin Scholarship, a business administration major and Recorder for his chapter.

“I want to reiterate that the most important message on this page is undoubtedly my sincere thanks. Post-secondary education, though so important in today’s world, can be daunting in its cost. Unfortunately, the weight of the financial aspect of university can so often take center stage in place of a focus on academics. Generous acts like the donation of this scholarship go far in making a difference in the lives students, and allow them to pay more of their focus on what really matters – getting a meaningful education to provide themselves with a better life.” Kyle LeClair, Delta Pi/University of Ottawa, Samuel Gotfrid Scholarship Recipient

Graduate Scholarships

Unlike many Greek organizations the Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation is proud to offer several scholarships to fratres who are pursuing graduate degrees. Highlights include:

Chief Justice Norman Krivosha Scholarship is for a member of ΣAM attending law school (2nd or 3rd year) and demonstrating excellence. Jonathan Ossip (Gamma Tau/Florida) is the 2014 recipient. He was a re-founding father of the Gamma Tau/Florida chapter and is attending law school at New York University, where he has focused on the economic analysis of law. Fra Krivosha (Sigma Omicron/Nebraska) served as Chief Justice of the Nebraska Supreme Court from 1979-1987.

Josh Steinberg (Beta Gamma/Arizona) is attending the Arizona School for Dentistry and Oral Health and is the recipient of the Nu Legacy Scholarship for $1,000. Josh is the grandson of Milton Setnar (Nu/University at Buffalo). Alumni of Nu chapter have created this scholarship for the children and grandchildren of Nu alumni who join ΣAM and are undergraduates or graduate students.

The 2014 Morris & Fannie Skilken Scholarship was awarded to Nathan Shore. Nathan is a Sigma Beta/Ohio State alumnus who is in business school at New York University and working on his MBA.

Theda & Leonard Leventhal Scholarship is for a graduate student who is a Boy Scout with Life, Star or Eagle status. Endowed by Fra Leonard Leventhal (Sigma Alpha/Oklahoma ’47) and his wife, the 2014 recipient is Joshua Kolapo (Delta Eta/West Florida), who is pursuing a Masters in Student Affairs at University of South Florida. As an undergrad, Josh was the recipient of the 2013 Outstanding Prior award and a DLI participant.

Zach Bulwa (Rho/Illinois) is the 2014 recipient of the Samuel Miller Award for out-standing research for his work on the cellular mechanism of cataracts. This is the second time Fra Bulwa has received this award. He is the 2012 recipient of the Samuel Miller award and built on the findings in that research, expanded it, and produced his current research. He is in medical school at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

Memorial Scholarships:Highlights

In addition to supporting the Guller Young Scholars program, Fra Sidney Guller (Phi/Washington University) has endowed four other scholarships for fratres: The Martin E. Sherman Scholarship honors the good deeds Fra Sherman (Sigma Rho/Missouri ’58) did for ΣAM, the Sigma Rho chapter, and St. Louis fratres; the Louis & Fannie Guller Scholarship is a memorial to the parents of Sidney, his brothers Arthur (Sigma Rho/Missouri) and Maurice (Sigma Rho/Missouri), and grandparents of Robert Guller (Sigma Theta/Texas) and James Guller (Theta/University of Pennsylvania); the Bobbi & Sidney Guller Scholarship remembers Sidney’s late wife Bobbi and how she shared Sidney’s dedication to Fraternity; and the Sidney Guller Scholarship, intended for Phi/Washington University, shows Sidney’s devotion to his college and Fraternity.

The 2014 recipients of these scholarships are:

Martin E. Sherman Scholarship – Jacob Frankovitz (Sigma Zeta/Indiana University) Louise & Fannie Guller Scholarship – Jovani Salciero (Delta Zeta/Florida International) Bobbi & Sidney Guller Scholarship – Joshua Beitchman (Gamma Kappa/Texas A&M) Sidney Guller Scholarship – Jason Peretz (Delta Omega/Rochester Institute of Technology)

The Steven Dachinger Memorial Scholarship was endowed by his family and friends to remember Steven and honor his loyalty, leadership and dedication to Sigma Alpha Mu. Designated for a member of Sigma Alpha Mu who is a student or graduate student at Michigan State or Tulane (Fra Dachinger was initiated at Mu Chi/Michigan State and transferred to Sigma Gamma/Tulane), who exemplifies Steven’s sense of honor and humor and commitment to both university and leadership. The 2014 recipient is Aaron Chapman (Gamma Kappa/Texas A&M) who is attending law school at Michigan State and assists with the Mu Chi/Michigan State chapter.

One of the newest scholarships is the Jonathan A. Schmidt Memorial Scholarship, which was first dedicated in April 2013 by the Schmidt family and the Delta Theta/Stony Brook chapter. Jonathan was a biomedical engineering major and loyal member of the Delta Theta chapter. The chapter continues to honor his memory by participating in an annual walk with his family as Team Jonathan and holding a softball tournament in his memory. The 2014 recipient of the Jonathan A. Schmidt Memorial Scholarship is Andrew Goodman, who has served as Prior of the chapter.

The family of Jeff Levy (Sigma Theta/Texas ’81) has endowed the Jeff Levy Memorial Scholarship for a member of the Sigma Theta chapter as a tribute to Fra Levy’s experiences in ΣAM and the friends he made in the chapter. Taylor Ellis received the scholarship for 2014 and has served the chapter in various offices, including brotherhood chair.

Ben Tillis is the recipient of the $1,500 Gary Gotlieb Memorial Scholarship, which was created to remember Gary (Sigma Theta/Texas ’86) and assist a member of the Sigma Theta/Texas chapter who demonstrates leadership, financial need, and academic distinction. Thanks to the efforts of fratres, family and Texas alumni, this scholarship fund continues to grow.

The Andrew Dickson Memorial Scholarship was endowed by family and friends to remember Andy Dickson (Phi/Washington University ’83) and his outstanding brotherhood and friendship. Awarded to Omri Saadi (Mu Epsilon/University of Miami), who serves as Prior of his chapter and was recommended by his entire chapter for his patience, leadership and always putting the needs of the chapter and fratres ahead of his own. Andy’s family and friends have remained involved and continue to make this scholarship a priority.

The Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation is fortunate to be able to honor our heritage with a variety of scholarships for students majoring or minoring in Jewish Studies. In memory of his parents Paul (Sigma Omicron/Nebraska ’51) and Margie Alperson, Joel Alperson (Sigma Theta/Texas ’78) endowed a scholarship in their names. Ian Sigalow (Beta/Cornell) is the 2014 Margie & Paul Alperson Scholarship recipient.

Ed Brandman (Sigma Delta/Rutgers ‘87) has endowed the Harold Brandman Scholarship in memory of his father, who encouraged higher education and achievement. This scholarship, for a member of the Sigma Delta/Rutgers chapter, was awarded to Mark Y. Eisenberg, who served as recorder and recruitment chair for the chapter, and demonstrated academic excellence.

The Guller Young Scholars ProgramThe Guller Young Scholars program reached a new high in 2013-14 when 92 new initiates were awarded Guller Young Scholar awards.

The Guller Young Scholars Program is funded by the generosity of Past Supreme Prior Sidney Guller (Phi/Washington University ’43). His program rewards all ΣAM candidates who earn a GPA of 3.75 or higher during the semester they initiated. The Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation proudly reinforces that academic excellence is part of the Fraternity experience and that Sigma Alpha Mu values these high standards. We continue to thank Fra Guller for supporting this program.

In 2014 Fra Guller added an award for the chapter with the most Guller Young Scholars: The recipient of this honor was Mu Theta/USC who had 12 Young Scholars during the 2013-14 academic year. Fra Guller presented the chapter with a check for $1,000 at Convention. He plans to expand this chapter recognition in 2014-15. We are awed by his generosity and support of education and fraternity.

“I am currently on the executive board of Sigma Alpha Mu as Recorder and last semester I was the new member president. This winter break, I went on a trip to Panama through an orga-nization called Global Business Brigades. We assisted an underprivileged town by providing them with financial literacy workshops and working with them individually.”

“I am extremely grateful for having received the Dr. Vincent Contreras Leadership Scholarship. Receiving this scholarship will help me immensely as I continue to complete my degree in Architecture at UNLV. Scholarships like this are part of the reason I love this organization so much and have worked so hard for the five years I have been a member of the Delta Upsilon chapter. I have held multiple positions including Prior and Vice Prior and have always made it my mission to help those in need.”
