Paint ings

There is evidence that the wh01e ofthe westem and northcn rockfllces

wer e originaHy plast ered and painted. The world-renowned

paintings of Sigiri ya which date fi・ om the 5t h century A.D. are as

upreme expr ession of Sr i Lankan art at its height. Today thepaintings

are red uced to only 19 狗male fig ures, but the Sigiriyag

ramti verses reveal a startling fact about their original n umber.
