    De a r On es i n Ch ris t J es us :

It is well into our fourth month of furlough. Thus far, we have visited our supporting churches

in many states, traveling nearly 16,000 miles. It has been a great joy for us to meet again, the

    many

    loving

    Christians

    who so faithfiilly

    have supported our

    work

    these many

    years.

    At

    the

    time of writing

    this

    newsletter, we

    are

    in Tulsa, Oklahoma. By

    the

    time you

    read this

    newsletter

    we will

    have picked

    up

our daughter, Laurie in Texas and driven

    to

    South Dakota to

    spend Christmas together

    with

Debbie s family. It has been four years since we ve been together

for C hr is tm as . T his is our first Christmas with our nearly four-year old grandson.

After Christmas, Diane is planning to stay with Debbie and family for a bo ut a month. S he plans

    to visit with Laiuie

    after

that. Bob will be traveling to

    other

    supporting churches

    and

    will also

    be

    making appointments with new

    churches, seeking additional financial

    support

    for

    the

    move to

    China

We plan to return to Singapore by April first.

    Needless to say,

    culture

    shock coming back to America

    has

    had a

    great

    impact on us.

    The

    variety

    of things

    a person

    can buy

    in America

    is

    unbelievable Diane's brother-in-law

    could not

believe she could spend six and a

    half

hours in a huge shopping center without buying an5d;hing.

    She just had to 'look

    at everj^hing.

    On November 18, Bob s

    father

    went to

    be

    with

    his

    Lord.

    He

    was

    86

    years old. We had

    already

    been

    able to visit with

    him

since we arrived on furlough. We

    had

    enjoyed so

    many years

    with

    dad and

it was a sad time when

    he

left us. However, there was great joy because we

    knew

    he

would be in a better place

    because

    ofChrist. We want to thank

    those

    of

    you

    who were so kind to

    us

    during this t ime of

    loss. It

    was

    a

    great support

    for a ll

    of

    us.

After Bob returns to Singapore and collects information from the

    SingaporeanChristians

concerning China, he will make a trip to

    China

    for more survey and

    research

    into the

    possibilities

there. There must be confirmations, careful consideration, and

    careful planning

concerning this major move. We intend to help co-ordinate strategies of the Singaporean

Christians as we work together with them to evangelize China. Correct preparation is vital.

    TH E FLIGHT B A C K

We left Waco, Texas on April 10 midwest time 6:00

    a.m.), headingback to Singaporevia LosAngeles.

After boarding the plane inDallas, we were infonned

    t ha t w e w er e under a

    severe

    tornado

    watch.

    W e

waited in the plane on the nmway for four hours until

the worst of the stormhad passed Needless to say,

we missedour connecting flight in Los Angeles. The

next available plane for us was to be twelve hours

later. We boarded that plane at 3:00 a.m., flew

non-stop to Taipai, Taiwan 14 hours and 15 minutes)

and., after a stop-over there, proceeded on to

Singapore fourmore hours) arriving here at 1:00p.m.

    Wednesdayafternoon midwesttime midnight,

Tuesday,April 11). Wewere greeted by a soup of

hiunidity, but being exposed to fresh air was

exhilarating Byhavingto stay fastened in our seat

belts flying through those ominous clouds in Texas,

and battling stronghead-windsall the way to

Singapore,we were not able to enjoy any physical

activity. Consequently, not onlywere our feet and

ankles swollen, but alsoour legs, arms, hands and

faces. Jet-lag this time around was the worst we have

ever experienced. We still, at this point, would love to

sleep at noon Thenat midnight, weget this

    su en

burst of energyto work. Hopefully, we shouldbe

    settling down soon.

    B A C K

Our first few days back have been uneventful for the

most part. We have been running around trying to

re-acquaint ourselves with Singapore again. There

have been new buildings come up since we have

    been

    gone, which changes our memories

    o f

    the landmarks

    we o n c e k n e w . O ld

    familiar

    streets

    ha ve

    also

changed. It is amazing how fast this country

    progresses

We had almost forgotten how luscious green foliage

envelopes this island. This does soflen the blow

    of

    the

heat and humidity. Even our very own neighborhood

birds, the blue kingfishers, yellow orioles and

common sparrows, plus mynah birds gave us a

    m us i c a l

    return.

Our first Simdayback was Easter Sunday. We joined

the Christian Canaan Church where Richard Wong

A good group was in attendance and the service was

blessed by some who confessed their faith and were

baptized there at the ocean site.

We then went to Singapore Gospel Church and were

warmly welcomed back by th e congregation there.

    The

kids who are usually to o shy to

    were all

The government has given us yet another extension on

our building. The final date has been set for January

    1996 for demolition

    of

    our building. Our Chinese

speaking service was at 3:30 p.m. This group consists

    of

former drug addicts. Before furlough, we had about

20 meeting together. Now, they have grown to more

than 40. It seems they are so excited about having

their own church meetingswithout beingtreated as

outcasts by other churches. Our church Grandma,

Madam Tay, has been leading this group since we

    have

    been

    gone.

In general, we see God's blessings and His hands upon

the work here in Singapore. We, as missionaries,

    sometimes feel our presentation

    of

    the Gospel to

    non-believers is

    so

    small that

    God

    could blink

    His

eyes and miss our feeble attempts. However, when we

see lives changed and mountains moved, we knowHis

Spirit, through us, has been a Light for those seeking

    hearts.

    CULTURE

    SHOCK.. .AGA1N

While we were welcomed back by the heat and

humidity, we were also hit hardwith the rising costs

ofeverything. Asyou mayknow, the U.S.Dollar has

dropped again offthe earth, I think), which leaves us

in a very unsettling situation. The scenario may

    change to one

    of

    desperation

    if

    there is a further

    reduction in

    the

    dollar.

Not only has the dollar dropped, but prices have also

gone up in Singapore. Our rent will soon be raised to

U.S. 1,300.00 permonth. This same apartment was

    ' isW

only U.S. 300 in 1988. Bear in mind, it is still about

the cheapest available place to rent in Singapore.

As we had no groceries in the house after our return,

we decided to go to Denny's for breakfast. Our

Grand Slam we enjoyed in America for the special

1.99 price cost us more than U.S. 8.00 each that

morning. We were further in shock the next day,

when we dashed to our favorite cheap Chinese food

place for TimSumBuffet The bill was more than

double what we had paid just a few months back.

Supermarket shoppingwas no better. Food and

    household necessi ties are

    two and

a half to four t imes

the priceswe enjoyed inAmerica. We will have to

monitor the situation very closely and add more water

    to that soup.

    IMMEDIATE

    PLANS

We are working on making the necessary contacts in

China to help us in our search for new endeavors

    there. This takes a lot

    of

    time writing letters back and

forth, visiting people here, and following up on sound

    opportunities.

A trip to China is tentatively set for June.

Please pray for this searching and that God will

provide all that we need for this endeavor.

    With love and prayers.
