Happy Thanksgiving – November 22 November is a time when family festivities begin to ramp up for many. With Thanksgiving around the corner so many people are fortunate to spend it with the clan preparing traditional family favorites. For those snowbirds already here, perhaps you’ve created a new tradition of inviting family to spend the holidays in our sunny paradise or you may be making the trek back home. However you spend it, we wish you a safe and bountiful Thanksgiving.

The Crystal Classic Sand Sculpting Competition – November 8-12 November is also a time when locals and visitors alike can look forward to a new tradition that began on Siesta Key three years ago. The Crystal Classic came about as a result of discussions between master sand sculptor and Siesta Key resident Brian Wigelsworth and representatives of the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, Sarasota County Parks and Recreation, Mote Marine Laboratory, and the Sarasota Convention and Visitors Bureau, according to their website. The artistic beauty that these master sculptors are able to achieve

is stunning. Their attention to detail has to be seen up close and personal to be appreciated. The Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce expects over 50,000 people to attend. We hope you’re among them.

Veteran’s Day – November 11 We’d be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge some of the most important members of our society - our veterans. They’ve given up much to defend our freedom and kept us safe on US soil. Be sure to take some time to read our article about Veteran’s Day featuring Sarasota veteran Bob Fernander. We salute all our veterans thanking them for their service and praying for their safety.

As for us, we’re thankful for the many relationships we’re building on the island and beyond. We look forward to working together with our advertising family and our wonderful contributing writers to bring a product that both locals and visitors will enjoy picking up.

As we enter November, often referred to as ‘slow season’, a few special events generate energy for our island community. The Crystal Classic (www.crystalsand.org) enters its third

season as a fund raising event for Mote Marine Laboratory. The Crystal Classic sand sculpture contest is now an international event expected to draw over 40,000 people to support the world renowned Mote Marine. Siesta Key Association (SKA) and Siesta Key Village Association (SKVA) joined together this year as sponsors and volunteers to support Mote Marine Laboratory. This event hosts renowned artists from around the world as they create masterpiece sculptures using our perfect Siesta Beach crystal quartz sand. You’ll be thrilled with these imaginative and

extensively detailed sand sculpture creations. SKA looks forward to the annual “Light up the Village” parade and holiday open house of Siesta Key Village, November 24th from 6-9:00PM. This great tradition, initiated by SKVA, now attracts floats from Siesta Key Merchants and other organizations. SKA Directors, Peter van Roekens and Joe Volpe, are volunteers on the SKVA Holiday Planning Committee creating a wonderful parade experience and visit from Santa. The parade begins at Siesta Beach parking lot and passes

course, SKA Director, Bob Waechter, at the helm of his antique Fire Truck, it’s great fun. Last year, a mechanical glitch stalled the SKA Holiday Fire Truck, and it was crowd participation and

parade. With the technical problem now repaired, ‘Fire Chief’ Bob says we’re good to go! Look for our SKA Directors and family atop our SKA Holiday Fire Truck again this year. After a year of shared community input and planning, FDOT has completed the Midnight Pass crosswalks. Increasing

pedestrian safety was the purpose of this enhancement given our highly pedestrian beach community. With diverse and varied opinions offered, it was agreed that safety and ease of access was a shared value. SKA worked closely with the Siesta Key Condominium Council and other residential communities engaging FDOT and County Staff to implement the design most preferred by residents. Since 2003, SKA has participated in the County Adopt-A-Road program along with the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce (SKCC) and SKVA. SKA Directors, Michael Shay and Peter van Roekens, and Mark Smith from the Chamber have scheduled the next pickup for November 17th. A growing number of residents and visitors have joined us for the free (with heavy tipping) breakfast at the Village Café at 8am, followed by the pickup at 9am. It takes about an hour and it is a great way to meet neighbors and contribute to the beauty of our Siesta Key. Trash bags, gloves, and grabbers are provided – all we need is you!

Village parking district abolished Sarasota County Commissioners voted to end a special taxing district on Siesta Key. The tax of nearly $50,000 per year was paid by property owners in Siesta Village to compensate the county for parking improvements. The burden shifts to all property tax payers in the county. The vote was 4-1, with Commissioner Nora Patterson in the minority. She lives on Siesta Key, and questioned the equity of all county taxpayers subsidizing a few merchants. One of the merchants challenged the assessments in court, saying the levies were selectively enforced. The district was set up in 1996 to build a parking lot. Owners pay according to the number of spaces they are required to have under present zoning codes. Abolishing the district was seen as a way of clearing up a confusing and potentially illegal apportionment to pay off the $863,000 parking lot.

North Bridge now like new The rehabilitation of the Siesta Drive bascule bridge over

lane closures are done. The project replaced the pedestrian walkway and bridge grating on the 40-year-old structure. It was the first time the entire steel grating on the roadway was replaced. The project cost $3.5 million and was handled by Coastal Marine Construction of Venice. Key residents were fearful of construction delays that could have lasted into tourist season, but those concerns proved groundless. Commissioner Patterson said, “It was pretty painless and very well done on the part of the contractor and his crew.” The work began on June 5, and should be wrapped up by mid-November.

to marine mammals. When the organism is broken up by surf or breaking waves in storms, the toxin can get into the air and cause respiratory distress among people. Highest concentrations were found in Collier and Lee Counties to the south. For current information, go to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s website: http://myfwc.com/research/redtide/events/status/statewide/

Summertime may be a bit more relaxed on Siesta Key, but thieves stepped up their temp. Over the summer more than 20 cars were burglarized at the Siesta Key Beach parking lot,

Eight were rental cars targeted by thieves looking for electronics and credit cards. At least a couple of the thieves weren’t geniuses. A woman visiting from Arizona told deputies somebody broke in and took two cellphones and two credit cards. She then called back to say one of the cards had been used at a local Walmart and a Best Buy. Deputies obtained a video of the purchase, and returned when the Walmart staff said the suspects had returned. Staffers

the car, arrested the men and recovered the stolen items as well as the newly purchased items. Beach parking lot burglaries are an unfortunate fact of life on Siesta Key. Deputies urge people not to leave valuable items visible in automobiles, and keep their car doors locked.

Midnight Pass Road crosswalks a-building Construction wrapped up on six locations along Midnight Pass Road where crosswalks were installed. The spots will receive flashing lights, signage, pavement markings, a pedestrian island and road resurfacing. The locations are at the Sarasota Surf and Racquet Club, the Gulf and Bay Club, the Siesta Royal, Excelsior, Peppertree Bay and the Palm Bay Club. Total cost of the project is $155,800. The crosswalks will bisect Midnight Pass Road between Beach Road to the north and Stickney Point Road to the south. Construction delays have been minimal, and no further

The waning days of the Sarasota Chalk Festival are taking place as you read this. The street-art fest runs in the Burns Court area of town through Nov. 6.

Theme this year is “Circus City, USA,” according to organizers. Sarasota was the winter home of a slew of circus folk, many of whom still call the city their winter quarters.

The chalk festival is a big deal. There will be more than 500 artists participating in the work “creating giant paintings in 3D and 2D using chalk as their medium and the road surface as their canvas,” according to event organizers.

There will also be performance stages with music, drama, dance, magic, acrobatic, and aerial performances.

Best of all is all events are free. The chalk festival spurred the creation of some

Downtown art in the Palm Avenue Garage. Of course, it being held Downtown, there are

some who oppose the chalk festival as drawing too many people to too few parking arenas and disturbing patrons to their businesses.

Valid is the 10-day event with its accompanying street closures. Most of the similar chalk fests in the country run for a long weekend. Is 10 days too much for Downtown? Should the event be held where the business impact could be lessened?

Would the charm of the Chalk Art Festival at Burns Court be lost if the locale were moved? Seems like the chalk fest will spur more Water Cooler Debate.

Downtown hotel approved Downtown should get its hotel by late next year. Floridays Development has purchased city-owned property on Palm Avenue. The sale clears the deal for what Floridays plans to be a $40 million hotel with a 6,000-square-foot conference facility, plus full-service hotel amenities to accommodate its expected 200 rooms.

… and beyond Slang in the visitor and tourist world for people coming to our little piece of paradise is “heads in beds.” The term refers to people in resorts per night. New winner of the head-bed race goes to the Bayside Pet Resort and Spa in north Sarasota, which reported record-breaking sales this month after being open for only four months and had 245 pet lodging nights in early October, compared to 275 lodgings for the entire month of August.

And yes, the Bayside Pet Resort and Spa is “a pet resort offering amenities to dogs and cats, supervised doggie daycare, grooming services, opportunities for recreation and socialization and bedroom suits, some of which come with web cams so that owners can keep an eye on their pets from computers or smart phones,” according to SRQ Daily.

Thankfulness grows in meaning as we grow in life…. As young children we were taught to show our appreciation by blessing the people that we loved in our nightly prayers. As Dad or Mom tucked us in each night, we would give thanks and ask God to give blessings to all the people that made up our world and supplied us with our basic daily needs. With the help of a parent, grandparent, or another loving family member we would recite our grocery list of blessings. Each and every one of them was vital to our survival and it was so important not to forget any of them. We were thankful for our daily food, a warm sheltering home, but most of all the secure feeling of being loved unconditionally. Later, as we entered school our world grew larger and we realized the importance of having friends and we began to give thanks and blessings to the new people in our lives. It didn’t matter if our new friends were less or more fortunate than we were; we all began our lives being thankful for the simple things of life, most importantly the love of the people who cared for you, encouraged you, hugged you when you needed it, or when you didn’t. Unconditionally! Material things didn’t mean much back then … heck we were kids, we were happy, and the world was full of people who loved us, fed us, provided us with everything we needed to survive and thrive with. And we were Thankful! As our lives brought us more responsibility, we began to realize that the importance of being thankful became more than a just a list of names that we would rattle off like a grocery list. When we recited those prayers as younger children kneeling beside our beds, we did, so with loving eyes watching and patient ears listening. As young adults we soon realized the focus shifts from having our individual needs met and meeting the needs of others. During this period in our lives our circle of family and friends continued to grow even larger. We were striving to be successful, beginning our own families, asking God to now bless us with the strength to provide for them each day. Through perseverance and hard work we

were able to raise our families and foster in them the independence that they would need to start their own lives. The circle of life continued to evolve… Now in this stage of our lives we are thankful for each precious moment spent with family and friends. The special people that come into our lives “at different seasons for different reasons” giving us those beautiful memories that we will always hold close within our hearts. As our circle

important. Those basic needs that were so vital to us at the beginning of our lives; love, acceptance, kindness, compassion continue to be the common thread that helps us through the ups and downs of life. As we bow our heads to give thanks on this Thanksgiving Day, please remember to be thankful for all the people who have touched our lives in the past and the ones who continue to enhance our lives in the present. Let us all ask our God to bless us with good health and the ability to open up our hearts to everyone in need. Whether it be a smile, a hug, or a kind word … the effects will be everlasting.

Happy Thanksgiving and God Bless!

This is the infamous woodpecker that was the role model for the cartoon character, Woody the Woodpecker. Its unmistakable call is a loud, ringing kukkukkuk. A fairly large bird, about

followed by a pause that always results in the bird quickly losing altitude. With its bold red crest and large black bill, the pileated woodpecker is a very attractive bird. It could be mistaken for the ivory-billed woodpecker,

which is slightly larger, has a bone-white bill, and is in all likelihood extinct. The pileated is a formidable drilling machine, known to peck so deep into smaller trees that the tree breaks in half.

With its very strong beak and a special shock-absorbing head, the pileated working on a hollow log can produce a noise that can carry for blocks on a still morning. Particularly irritating to homeowners is the pileated’s obsession with drilling holes into the outside of houses, wood siding, window frames, pilings, you name it. The pileated feeds extensively on ants, beetles and beetle larvae, seeds, and fruit. It is monogamous and known to nest in wooden bird boxes (you can generally tell if a pileated is using the box if the entranceway has been

out telephone poles, and larger trees. Its eggs and chicks are sometimes preyed upon by snakes, rats, and raccoons, but for the most part it has few natural enemies once it reaches adult size. Because it prefers taller trees, the pileated, along with its brood, is vulnerable to lightning strikes.

Building Castles in the Sand and much, much more! Some say building castles at the beach is just child’s play, well not anymore… The 3rd annual Siesta Key Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpting Competition is a wonderful sculpting competition that will be held at the public beach Nov 8th through Nov. 12th 2012. (9am to 5 pm) Awards ceremony will be held Sunday at 3pm. Come visit Siesta Key Beach and watch as master sculptors transform sand into masterpieces and create a gallery of art! The Sand sculpture gallery will also be open for viewing on Monday. Tuesday morning this beautiful art will be cleared away…. Sand Sculpture is a creative art form and SK has great sand for shaping exquisite sand figures…last year the artists developed a variety of art forms, from horses to children, unique statues and monuments, to abstracts and everything in between. It’s an outdoor art gallery and the SK sand glimmers in the sun. These art pieces shimmer and shine like actual marble sculptures. Last year Brian Wigelsworth’s created a tribute to veterans

Jima. Last year’s winner was Nightmares by Dan Belcher and Karen Fralich. There are a couple of dozen competitors from many countries, including Canada, Holland, The Netherlands, Latvia, Germany, Portugal,

England and the United States. All are hoping to win with their sand masterpieces. First they must win an amateur competition then move on to the masters. This is a tremendous economic boost to our area, bringing 70,000 people from all over to Siesta Key. The Crystal Classic is brought to us by Sand Sculptures, SK Chamber, Sarasota Chamber, Sarasota County Parks & Rec, the Sarasota Convention Center & Visitor Bureau and Mote Marine, which also benefits by the dollars raised. Giving Back|Giving back season is upon us; don’t forget our military this holiday season. The holidays will soon be upon us. It’s a time of giving and receiving, a time when we give thanks for family, friends, and the joys of the holiday season. It’s also a time when we should all give back a little to those less fortunate. Yes, our pocketbooks have been hit hard in the past few years thanks to a spastic economy,

in our pockets to help those who need a little help. Our men and women in the military are among those in particular need. The Middle East is a harsh environment even without the bullets and bloodshed. Searing heat and brutal cold are just part of the extremes the troops have to endure, extremes compounded as the holidays near and the distance from family seems insurmountable. Grass Roots 4 The Troops (www.grassroots4thetroops.org) is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation based in Florida. The group provides services to our women and men in uniform that are not necessarily provided for the

All donations are tax-deductible. Contact the group online to give our troops something a little special for the holidays. And don’t forget to honor our troops during the Veteran’s Day Parade in downtown Sarasota Nov. 11. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Main Street and U.S. 301 and travels west on Main to Gulfstream Avenue at J.D. Hamel Park. There will be marching bands and members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in the parade, organized by the Patriotic Observance Committee.

From its modest beginnings, Sarasota Memorial Hospital has grown into a modern, award-winning medical center during its 86-year history. Sarasota Hospital opened its doors and its 32 beds to residents Nov. 2, 1925. It was located on Hawthorne Street and replaced a “tent hospital,” where the six-bed facility treated patients and emergency cases. It took several years of fundraising to gather the $40,000 to open Sarasota Hospital. The burgeoning institution raised its funds through face-to-face solicitation. “It was said that no businessman dared to venture

out, thereby making a public statement that he had no more to give for the hospital,” according to hospital archives. Sarasota Hospital was termed “the dream of many made possible by the intensive efforts of a few and the generosity of all,” according to the Sarasota Herald at the time. The original hospital was operated by the Sarasota County Welfare Association. The hospital’s fundraising drive was for the most part organized and accomplished by women. As perhaps a form of partial pay-back, a school for nurses was established in 1926. At that time, the hospital only had 10 employees to work its three shifts. “In 1927, construction on a hospital annex began. It was completed later that year and, since the annex moved the hospital into the city limits, the facility was turned over to the City of Sarasota and was renamed Sarasota Municipal Hospital,” according to the hospital. By the 1930s, Sarasota’s growth and the hospital had expanded. SMH had 100 beds, a nurses’ home, garage,

As Sarasota boomed through the 1950s, so too did the hospital. Under administrator Don Laurent’s 25-year leadership, the hospital went from 75 employees and 30 physicians to a 125-bed facility in 1953. It also received national accreditation in 1954. It was in that year that Sarasota Municipal Hospital was deeded to the Sarasota County Public Hospital Board and renamed Sarasota Memorial Hospital in honor of the veterans from both world wars. Dedication ceremonies were held for the new south

a blood bank, tumor clinic, physical therapy, obstetrics, pediatric, and psychiatric units.”

constructed to accommodate patient need. Demand for hospital services was unrelenting: “no vacancy” signs were a common sight on the front steps of the hospital,

hospitals would routinely provide this service. Growth continued through the 1960s. The Century Club was formed in 1964, with its members contributing $100 per year for unbudgeted equipment. Private donors such as Mr. and Mrs. Earl Retter contributed funds to add more wings. Growth was so rampant that the original 32-bed building was razed to accommodate the new construction. Added wings became towers in the 1970s, and enhanced technological equipment and facilities created under the auspices of the hospital’s executive director, H.J. Floyd. The 1980s saw an expansion of services at the sprawling South Sarasota campus. On site were new psychiatric and geriatric facilities and a new Open Heart Surgery Center, which reached the 100-patient mark within four months. The Waldemere Tower opened, followed by the Cape Outpatient Surgery Center, and Lakeside Pavilion (for mental health care) pushing the hospital’s bed capacity to 825. An MRI unit was purchased, a second heart catherization lab was built and laser surgery was initiated. Philip Beauchamp took the reins as president and CEO of Sarasota Memorial Hospital in 1985. Beauchamp emphasized strategic planning, upgrading services, and increasing patient comfort levels. Michael Covert became the next president and CEO of Sarasota Memorial Hospital in 1992. The hospital opened a Critical Care Center in 1993. Also added were the Breast Health Center, expanded perinatal and neonatal services, and an early intervention program for infants and young children with developmental delays. Patient records were modernized in the late 1990s,

convert its imaging service to electronic digital form. In 1998, the Jo Mills Reis/Urgent Care Center opened to offer family friendly care in an atmosphere less stressful than traditional emergency rooms. Innovations in robotic use in surgery continued through the next few years. Honors followed. Duncan Finlay, M.D. was named President and Chief Executive Officer in 2000, In 2002 SMH received the Florida Governor’s Sterling Award for Performance Excellence. Solucient named the Heart & Vascular Institute as one of the Top 100 Cardiovascular Hospitals in the country.

The Truth about how to speed up your metabolism

The national awards continued, as did accolades from patients and staff. Growth at the hospital’s campus continued with a freestanding emergency room in North Port and another serving northern Sarasota and East Manatee County with a new care center at Heritage Harbour.

Sarasota Memorial Health Care System today is an 806-bed regional medical center, one of the largest public health systems in Florida. “With about 4,000 staff, 802 physicians and 1,000 volunteers, it is one of Sarasota County’s largest employers,” according to hospital records.

“It is a full-service health system, with specialized expertise in heart, vascular, cancer, and neuroscience services, as well as a network of outpatient centers, long-term care and rehabilitation among its many programs. Sarasota Memorial is the only hospital providing obstetrical services, pediatrics and Level III neonatal intensive care in Sarasota County.” Sarasota Memorial Hospital has undergone quite an expansion from its “tent city” beginnings.

slow and you’ll end up gaining fat. Speeding your metabolism back up, requires a two prong approach. First you need to protect the muscle you have. Second you need to rescue the muscle you’ve lost. Let’s start with how to protect what you have. There are two ways we lose muscle: 1) When you don’t eat enough of the right things your body is forced to burn its own muscle as an energy source, so for starters you need to be absolutely certain that you’re providing your body with an adequate amount of the right nutrients. 2) The second way you lose muscle and slow your metabolism is inactivity. The reality is that as people age they typically become

less active as they become less active they lose muscle. As they lose muscle their metabolism slows; as their metabolism slows they gain fat. In other words aging isn’t to blame for a slower metabolism; inactivity is to blame. There’s a simple cure for inactivity – activity. But not all activity is equal when it comes to rescuing muscle. By far weight training is the single most effective thing you can do to rescue what you’ve lost and help protect what you have, because it’s the only activity that takes every major muscle group in your body through its full range of motions under a controlled amount of resistance that can gradually increase over time. The bottom line is that muscle is the absolute key to speeding your metabolism. If you have it, protect it by eating enough of the right things. If you’ve lost it, rescue it by starting a weight training program now. The information you need to learn how to eat enough of the right things and how to weight train safely and effectively is available to you immediately with our knowledgeable an experienced staff of

By October 1st of each year, we renew the insurance for one of my Landings associations. At least one Board member is always available to study the limits of the coverage, the ratings of the carriers, and of course the premium schedule. The rest of the associations in my portfolio follow suit and everything is renewed by June 1st just in time for another hurricane season. Sounds nice, right? But the slower summer season might be a better time to analyze the various policies needed to properly insure a condominium association against almost any eventuality. I guess it goes back to the developers for the timing of these policies not to expire during the storm season.

Most of you are acquainted with Citizens Insurance and the Difference in Conditions policy that must be provided by someone else due to the narrow coverage of the Citizens policy offered to associations. If you are fortunate enough to get a good package policy from an admitted company to the state of Florida, good for you!

But no matter who writes this important coverage, you still might suffer from “Gapposis”. It happens too often this gap between the Association’s policy and the individual owner’s policy. Murphy’s Law may also apply as adjusters on both sides will look for a reason in order to not pay out a claim. Condo dwellers all know that in general, individuals are responsible for the inside of their units and the Association for everything outside. I say generally, because Murphy must have been a General during the War. His law normally prevails. One way to defend against this is to have the individual units insured by the same company that covers the Association

property. This is very difficult to accomplish since a l l o f u s n o w are cons tant ly shopping for better prices and the number of carriers that will insure b o t h p e r s o n a l and commercial a c c o u n t s h a v e dwindled. Perhaps the only way to alleviate this potential headache is for the Board to adopt a Maintenance and Insurance Area of Responsibility List. This could be lengthy as most Declarations of Condominium can be

building components and assign that responsibility to the individual or the Association. This list would then be sent to the various agents effectively serving as notice to the company of what is expected by the insured. Any exceptions could then be noted to make sure that there are no gaps. If any are found, there is now an opportunity to remove them. So I guess that you could call this a “Gappendectomy”. Since election season is right around the corner, this could be an agenda item for upcoming meetings if you are willing to “scrub in”.

They are the real Men and Women in Black.Generally unseen, unheard and unheralded, they wear black

clothes to blend into the darkness which is their home. They are unknown and rarely acknowledged. They are the masters of the magic that is theater, or opera, or ballet, or any musical event seen on stage.

They are stagehands.Stagehands are the Behind the Scenes gurus. They are the people that make sure that forks and spoons

are in the proper place in the dining scene of your favorite play. They ensure that every note sung by the diva is heard in the

The stage magic can take months to create. The set designer draws up blueprints for the scenes. Carpenters, electricians, sometimes plumbers, painters, wardrobe, and others start building sets far before actors are even cast.

Sets are built off-premise of the production. Locally, much of the set production is created in a 40,000-square-foot shop off Tallevast Road owned by the Asolo Repertory Theatre.

Stagehands this season are creating not only the stage sets

for Sarasota Opera and Sarasota Ballet. Asolo-built sets have also been transported to New York for Broadway shows in the past.

When the sets are built they are broken down and reassembled at a particular venue.

Here are some classic Behind the Scenes stories.Dancers run on and off stage a lot. Onstage is brightly lit;

In short, lights went out, then shortly came back but at full intensity until the computer could tell the lights just which one was on and how bright it was supposed to be.

And of course the lightning incident happened when the director and friends were in the audience.

Wardrobe is one of the most maligned, yet arguably one of the most important departments, in any production. Wardrobe not only creates costumes but also has to maintain and clean them. Long after every actor has hit a favorite watering hole, and other stagehands have found a stool at their favorite dive bar, the lowly wardrobe mistress is deep in the bowels of the theater running load after load of laundry through commercial-grade washers and dryers.

The Men and Women in Black are usually regarded as unsung heroes. Sometimes, though, they really do heroic deeds.

A recent play featured a high wire act. Most local stagehands have spent a lot of time in the circus and have an uncanny ability of not missing anything that takes place onstage.

The guy on the high wire — it was maybe 15 feet off the ground — was having some problems. One burly stagehand was his ground shadow as he crossed the wire. Sure enough, the wire walker slipped only to be caught in midair by the stagehand.

“Hey, dude, you OK?” stagehand asked the stunned aerialist. Both received a round of applause.

Realtor Nikki Harper should’ve been home. The paint job in her kitchen should’ve been done and her mother, actress Victoria Bordeaux, should’ve had her Hollywood mansion all to herself again. Nikki would return to selling expensive houses and Victoria could enjoy semi-retirement. That’s the way it should’ve been the morning that Eddie Bernard was found behind the Bordeaux mansion with gardening shears buried in his chest. Eddie, son of Victoria’s long-time neighbor, Abe, had just gotten out of rehab two weeks prior. Not one to give up his drugs, he’d thrown a party the night before that culminated in several

One of the loudest was with Victoria’s gardener, Jorge. Everybody saw it happen. Everybody knew Jorge and Eddie detested one another. And since the shears had Jorge’s name engraved on the handles, everybody knew they were his. Jorge was the son of Victoria’s housekeeper, and Nikki had known him forever. She was sure

he didn’t kill Eddie; he wasn’t that kind of guy. Yes, he had reason, but so did just about everybody. Eddie had been messing around with too many women with jealous boyfriends. Abe’s second wife, Ginny, reportedly loathed her stepson. There were a lot of people at the party who seemed to want Eddie for his money and his drugs, and Nikki heard rumors that some of the hangers-on were “dangerous.” Still, she couldn’t let Jorge go to jail for something he didn’t do. She had to know who really killed Eddie, but someone definitely wanted her to stop looking… Ho boy. Finally! A mystery that isn’t revealed

Whodunit fans who hate the let-down of a too-solvable mystery will love this delightfully tangled novel, the second in a semi-series that can be read as a standalone. |Before You Begin... Interest rates are low, your Siesta Key home is “tired” and you want a fresh look. Where do you start? If you begin by applying for an equity line on your home to remodel, trust me you have ample time to research your design options while that process is working. Banks are impossible these days (however I must say our local banks are willing to go those extra miles to help – thanks Ray!) So don’t despair, it can be accomplished! Of course there is the dreaded appraisal process in a recovering real estate market... That is an entire article for another day. Professional references are mandatory. Before you do anything else, please begin with consulting local professionals. Local is practical, these are professionals who know the rules of the area. If you are not a current

I hear is the resale value consideration. If you are in fact only remodeling to sell your home, this is your priority. However if you plan to live there, design for comfort. Remember, if your family and lifestyle are comfortable, that family looking to purchase will see the ease of use instead of making an effort to make it work. Design for yourself. Design for the moment. Design for the future.

Here’s some of those silly slogans that have imbedded themselves in our brain cells: Don’t drink and drive. Just say no to drugs. Cigarette smoking is bad for you. And — Don’t run over manatees while boating. For some weird reason, boaters continue to keep running over manatees in Florida. Since manatees usually travel in groups, and since they weigh in at almost a ton, it seems hard to believe that you could be zipping along and not spot the herd, but on average about 50 boaters strike manatees every year . The results are fatal to the gentle sea cows. As air and water temperatures chill, manatees start their migration to warmer waters. In this area, that means most of manatees are heading north to power plant hot water outfalls in Tampa Bay. Manatees, by the way, don’t survive in waters cooler than 68 degrees. “Manatees generally start traveling to warm water when the air temperature drops below 50 degrees or when the water

the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The state agency urges boaters to “scan the water near or in front of the boat, looking for swirls resembling a large footprint, a repetitive line of half-moon swirls, a mud trail, or any breaking of the surface by a snout or a tail.”

manatee-spotting tips include wearing polarized sunglasses to improve vision, abiding posted boat speed zones, and using paddles or trolling motors if manatees are close to you to avoid one of the awful human-manatee interactions that usually impact the manatees more than the boat. As you’ve probably read time and time again, hitting a manatee with a boat is guaranteed to ruin an otherwise perfectly nice day on the water. By the way, November is Manatee Awareness Month in Florida, and the Save the Manatee Club is encouraging people to visit one of the — literally —hot-spots to watch the gentle marine mammals. A good spot not too far from us is the Manatee Viewing Center at Tampa Electric Company in Apollo Beach, or Lee County Manatee Park in Fort Myers.

Angelito at the South Florida Museum in Bradenton. Angelito was rescued from the Miami area and is visiting Snooty while recuperating. Speaking of manatees, here’s an interesting factoid: they are recent visitors to the Sarasota County area. Scientists have historically noted very few of the

published reports of manatees in the area was when a carcass washed ashore on Siesta Key in 1959. Aerial surveys for the critters as late as 1976 found none in Sarasota Bay. Those ever-cautious scientists are quick to point out that they aren’t sure if the recent surge in manatee populations in Sarasota Bay is a result of more manatees or the fact that sampling techniques are better now than they were years ago. As a kid growing up on Sarasota Bay, I know we hardly ever saw manatees — maybe one every three or four years.

expedition. Which brings us back to those silly slogans and, once again — Don’t run over manatees while boating.

The females, apparently, grudgingly accept the attention, then often kill the male after he has completed his task. Coarsegold, which apparently is pretty much close to nothing, has been holding an annual Tarantula Awareness Festival for 17 years now, featuring the Hairy Leg Contest, in which men are awarded prizes for having legs that most-mimic

Factoid The 48th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was assassinated Nov. 22, 1963. The St. Petersburg Times ran a selection of quotations by JFK a few years ago. The following is from a speech he gave in 1962 at an America’s Cup dinner in Newport, R.I. As you may remember, Kennedy was an avid sailor. “I really don’t know why it is that all of us are so committed to the sea, except I think it is because in addition to the fact

that the sea changes and the light changes, and ships change, it is because we all come from the sea. And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have, in our veins, the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean and, therefore, we have salt — in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. “We are tied to the ocean. “And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or watch it, we are going back from whence we came.”

Whether your favorite coffeehouse is one of the many trendy coffee shop chains or the smaller venues reminiscent of the beatnik era of the late 1950’s – 1960’s with comfortable couches, improvisational music and laid-back conversations, all have their faithful followers. Is it the special coffee blends or the social aspect that keeps customers coming back? And what is it about coffee that makes it such a staple worldwide? A stop at The Local Bean coffeehouse in Siesta Key Village provides a glimpse of why

patrons drink the stuff. When asked why they drink coffee, a sampling of regulars shared their thoughts.

Chandra: It tastes good. Angela: Because I crave it. Connie: Brings me immediately back to Paris– 1 shot whipped cream & cocoa. Nurit: Stimulation for the day, although truthfully it has a calming effect on me! Carol: Coffee Therapy really helps clearmy mind.

Conner: Simulant of left brain language center – settles me.

Jackie: Makes me feel secure and grounded. Ava: I do not drink coffee but I love the smell. It’s evocative of the earth. Bethany: I drink coffee because I like the taste but more so, I like that it gives me an opportunity to sit and clear my mind, think, talk to friends. It’s my relaxation time every morning.

Joanne: I can’t live without it. Even decaf says,“Wake Up!” to me. Bob: Being of Italian ancestry, I was raised with coffee. The pot was always on. Coffee and cake became a social event, as it is now at “The Bean”. I just couldn’t live without it. Essie: I drink coffee because I enjoy being with friends at The Coffee Bean. Cindy: Because it is relaxing! Aday: Shawn: Because it’s delicious.Fab: It’s a comfort drink.Shelley: I love the aroma. It gets me out ofbed in the morning. Yanuary: It is a family tradition. Sandi: It balances me…picks me up when I’m down, calms me down when I’m too up… and I LOVE it!!Mick: The power of a man’s mind is directly proportional to the quantity of coffee he drinks… Anonymous: Because my doctor made me quit booze and reefer.

Our unity in these and other civic actions has made Siesta Key a great place to live, work, and play, inviting many visitors to our island home. We accomplish this with our Members’ support and ideas, welcoming informational speakers and visitors at our monthly meetings. This month, SKA welcomes speaker Laird Wreford, Coastal Resources Manager, discussing the RESTORE Act funding from the BP oil spill settlement and how millions of dollars could be available to help our county.

Pets’ Personal PostsIf pets could post their own personals, here what they’d say…

Dog of the Month: HuggyI’m a sweet, affectionate guy just looking for love! Could

you be the object of my affection? Could you have the forever home I’m looking for?

I come across as a bit shy. I take my time getting to know people. But then....you won’t believe how I change, in a

good way. I become outgoing and affectionate. I love to lie beside you and even better, be in your lap. I won’t leave you alone for long and I’d love to be your true companion.

I don’t need a lot of outdoor exercise or extra attention.I just want to be your best friend. You know...stick by

your side, get a scratch behind the ears and just enjoy your company.

These pets would love to have a family of their own. If you are

considering a pet, please think about adopting from HSSC

Cat of the Month: BinkwyHi! My name is Binkey and I’m a cougar on the prowl for some lasting love. Don’t let my age fool you. I am quite active and outgoing for a 12 year old feline. Just been feeling a bit lonely lately and would love to meet someone who lives nearby and likes to cuddle. I’m not looking for a one night stand

or to just hook up with someone. An ongoing thing would be great, someone special to spend time with. Mr. Right is out there, just waiting, and maybe out with all the wrong girls. Give me a ringy-ding-ding and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

|Siesta Key Drum Circle Siesta Beach has become the home to what is considered one of the largest drum circles in the nation. This is not a commercial event but local phenomenon that began spontaneously and now has a life of its own. If you’re visiting the area, or live nearby be sure to check this one out. There are loads of drummers and belly dancers plus lots of families, beach going onlookers, & curious tourists, especially during the winter tourist season when the crowds can swell into the thousands. Bring a blanket or chair, most everyone does. It happens every Sunday starting a couple of hours before sunset, and ends around 10 PM. This gathering meets up just south of the main pavilion between lifeguard stands 3 and 4 on Siesta Public Beach. Just follow your ears. This is true community - free-form drumming, open to the public and entirely improvised in-the-moment. Instruments center around drums and percussion, but may include other instruments such as flutes, didgeridoos, and other non-percussion instruments. Participation is voluntary and includes singing or chanting, dancing, relaxing, and listening. It’s always a good time with solid musicality, dancing, and a great vibe. Admission is free. The Siesta Key Beach address is: 948 Beach Road, Sarasota, Florida 34242 to get more info visit the website www.drumcircles.net/sarasota.html or there is a Yahoo group, and a Facebook group named “Siesta Key Drum Circle” just search for them.

|Rated #1 Beach In America by Dr. Beach... Siesta Public Beach, located inside Crescent Beach, is renowned for its truly breathtaking sunsets, easy-going waves, and gorgeous crystal white sand. The sand is 99% pure quartz, soft and cool to the touch. Among the many awards it has earned are the “Whitest, Finest Beach Sand in the World” (The Great International White Sand challenge, 1987), “The Best Sand Beach in America” (The Travel Channel, 2004) and for 2011, it was rated #1 beach in the 21st annual Top 10 Beach List, produced by coastal expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, Director of Florida Inter-national University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research. Walking along, or swimming and playing in the Gulf of Mexico or merely basking in the tropical sun is enough fun for many folks, but others are drawn by Siesta Beach’s many amenities, which include tennis and vollyball courts, shaded playground and picnic/barbecue areas and convienent concession stands. Shallow water near shorline and year-round lifeguard protection make it a great family beach. Beach wheelchairs can be borrowed to help special needs visitors cross the sand. There’s always something for everyone to do at Siesta Beach. It’s island location is within easy walking distance to many of the village shops and restaurants located in the Siesta Village.

Crescent Beach actually begins between beach access #2 & #3 and extends to beach access #13 with the southern part relatively secluded and quiet, as it has only one public access road. Located just south of Siesta Beach, the scene here tends to be more peaceful and private. At the southern tip of this beach is Point of Rocks - a lovely snorkeling and diving area that is rich with coral rock formations as well as colorful and abundant marine life. Crescent Beach visitors staying in nearby resorts, rentals and beach clubs rave (but only to their closest friends) about Siesta Key’s best “non-private private” beach.

Turtle Beach is at the southern tip of Siesta Key, and affords a sportier, “family play” beach experience. The beach has picnic areas, a playground, a vollyball court and horseshoe pit. There’s also a boat launch, and fishing is permitted in the adjacent Blind Pass Lagoon. There are restaurants nearby, with shopping and a few local night spots just a short drive away. Turtle Beach is a narrow beach, with a somewhat steeper incline. The sand on the beach tends to carry more shells, making it perfect for beach combers and shell collectors. Many find petrified sharks’ teeth to take home and treasure, especially after a storm.

|Pet Friendly Beaches... Although dogs are not allowed on any of the beaches on Siesta Key, there are a few places you can take your furry pal within a short distance from the island. Brohard Paw Beach, 1600 Harbor Drive, Venice, FL 34285. Hours: 24 hours per day, 365 days per year (parking closed from 12 AM – 6 AM); dogs allowed on the designated portion of beach from 7 AM to dusk only Paw Park is one of the few places along the beach where dogs are allowed. The park features an enclosed run for big dogs and one for small dogs, as well as an open beach area where dogs can swim. This park, across from Venice’s airport, is where you and your “best friend” can play in the gulf and socialize with other dogs, offering doggie drinking fountains; showers on decks for “dogs only”, fire hydrants and leash posts, dog lovers have declared this park… and beach… to be the best doggie park in the state! Shaded by towering oaks, small dogs will enjoy their fenced in arena while the big boys can frolic in the larger pen. Double gates access both parks and the beach. A paved walkway leads directly to the beach where your best friend will delight in this 300’ section of sand and water.

Note: Summer months may force you to carry your furry friend as the sand can be hot under paw. Doggie waste bags and receptacles are provided and strategically placed around the park. Human comforts include drinking fountains, picnic tables and restrooms. Parking is very limited although off road parking is across the street. Bird Key Park is located on Bird Key, Florida, at the foot of the Ringling Causeway Bridge, which leads to Sarasota. This small stretch of beach along Sarasota Bay is a well-known spot for dog lovers. You and your dog can swim together while enjoying stunning views of the blue-green water. The park is open from 6 a.m. until 12 a.m. year-round, and admission is free. (Source: eHow)

Ken Thompson Park, a small beach on the Gulf Coast of Florida, is a hidden treasure near the Mote Marine Aquarium on Sarasota Bay. Here you will also find the New Pass Fishing Pier, which winds through the mangroves. You and your pet can stroll along the pier or relax in the sun while watching the kayakers launch their boats. The beach is open from 5 a.m. until 11 a.m. and admission is free. (Source: eHow)

I Got The

Crabs At

Captain Curt’s

Captain Curt’s is a lot more than Clam Chowder. If you are looking for that “Old Florida” place to take the family, a place that will take you back in time to an era where good, fresh seafood was a standard, look no further... Captain Curt’s Crab & Oyster Bar is just that place.

It’s a place where reasonable prices, a casual family atmosphere and courteous service still exist, too.

Besides the great food and prices, Captain Curt’s serves up a slice of Old Florida character almost impossible to find elsewhere. Upon entering the dining room, you’ll get the feeling you have returned to a bygone era…a time when rustic, casual dining with a friendly staff, happy to serve you, still existed. The seating is casual and can accommodate large parties as well as small.

Captain Curt’s award winning New England Clam Chowder is just the beginning of the delicious items on our extensive menu. A large variety of crab plates are available, from Alaskan King, Snow Crab and

Dungeness to the local favorite, Florida Stone Crab.

But crab entrees are only part of the story. Our menu offers something for everyone. Seafood is the mainstay, and you can choose from a wide variety. Shrimp, fish, scallops, clams, and oysters can be prepared almost any way you desire.

For the landlubber...The House Specialty BBQ Baby Back Ribs have been called “The Best in Town,” and the Grilled Prime Rib is

the favorite of many. There is also a good variety of pork, chicken, burgers and hot dogs. And don’t forget the Gumbo; you won’t be disappointed.

If light fare is your choice, try one of Captain Curt’s delicious salads. They range from traditional favorites to a selection of seafood specialties like the Shrimp, Chicken or Mahi Caesar. All are prepared with the freshest of ingredients.

For the children... Captain Curt’s is perfect. The Children’s Menu offers a number of tasty dishes -- with fries -- for just $5.99.Children’s dinners are served on our original “Crabby Frisbee,” which is theirs to keep and take home.

You just cannot beat Captain Curt’s menu for Florida favorites as well as delicious traditional entrees.

If more of a good thing is possible, visit Captain Curt’s Back Room Saloon. The full menu is available in the saloon with food and drink specials offered daily.

But the real secret to the Back Room’s popularity is entertainment! “Live at the Crab” presents live music by some of Sarasota’s best performers seven nights a week, from 8pm to midnight. (Check out our entertainment schedule. If you are a karaoke fan, try the Backroom’s karaoke, it’s been called “the best in town.”

Also, for sports fans, the Backroom’s satellite TVs make for a party during every event. Food and drink specials are always available.

So what are you waiting for? If you are looking for that perfect place to take the family, visit us on beautiful Siesta Key. We are easy to find and eagerly await the opportunity to serve you.

We hope to see you soon!

Look for Captain Curt’s Crab & Oyster Bar just one block south of Stickney Point Rd.(Siesta Key’s South Bridge) on Midnight Pass Rd.
