can become a bit congested. Now may be a good time to remind everyone of our island etiquette. We do have many crosswalks that are clearly marked. This means that you must stop and allow anyone waiting to cross to do

pedestrians are in the crosswalk so if you are unsure of their intention it may be wise to stop anyway, just to be safe. Pedestrians please don’t assume that the driver has seen you. Raise your arm when entering the crosswalk to signify your wish to cross. Although you do not need to stop for pedestrians outside of crosswalks, here on The Key many drivers do. Please be attentive to your surroundings to avoid any mishaps. For the bicyclists, you can ride on either the sidewalk or road. You really must yield to pedestrians when riding on the sidewalk and please give ample warning when wishing to pass anyone. On the road, you should stay in the bicycle lanes and ride in the same direction as cars. Vehicles must give you 3 feet of space when passing.

And for those receiving this courtesy, how about a wave to acknowledge it? We do love our island and ask you to keep it clean for all to enjoy. Please remember to put litter in its place. And if you chance upon an empty cup, bottle or bag, help put it in the trash. It is appreciated. One last thing to keep in mind; we’re on

|Bay Symposium Charts Successes and Problems By Stan Zimmerman...

A quarter-century ago New College sponsored the first scientific symposium to examine Sarasota Bay. It wasn’t a pretty picture. Failing sewer-treatment plants in Sarasota and Manatee Counties were spewing millions of gallons of partially treated sewerage into the bay. Surges of stormwater carried tons of pollutants off area roadways to mingle with the sewerage and fertilizer-laced runoff. Visibility in the bay was measured in inches, blocking

of the food chain. The bay was dying. The 1987 symposium was a cry for help. The people and governments of Sarasota and Manatee Counties heard the cry. Hundreds of millions of dollars later, and after untold hours of labor by a constellation of volunteer organizations, the decline was halted. In mid-February, 2012 New College sponsored a second Sarasota Bay Watershed Symposium. More than 200 scientists, staffers, volunteers and

heard presentations looking back at past successes. They also heard the work isn’t over. The Stormwater Challenge “Stormwater is what we do to rain,” said Tim Rumage, a professor of environmental studies at the Ringling College of Art and Design. “It’s pure, and then it’s immediately polluted.” He calculated one-half inch of rain falling within the limits of the City of Sarasota would be an 18-day supply of fresh water. But in reality it becomes 127 million gallons of stormwater, channeled along curbs and gutters into pipes for rapid discharge into Sarasota Bay. “There are so many things we can do with rain. It could fill cisterns or rain barrels or water a rain garden,” said Rumage. “But instead it becomes a conveyor of pollutants.”

has been. A century ago, Sarasota was an isolated agricultural community serviced by steamboats in the bay and gulf. Roads through the sugar sand were almost impossible to traverse. When it rained,

was extremely slow. Crops could die under the standing water. Steam dredges were used to create wide, deep ditches to get the water off the land. Kelly Westover with Sarasota County’s Environmental Services showed the symposium a 1847 map of the area, drawn by surveyors two years after Florida was admitted into the Union. “It was a much smaller watershed then,” she said. “But as the farmers ditched it for agriculture, it grew. And by the 1950s when urban development began in earnest, drainage districts were created to maintain and improve the stormwater system.” Today Sarasota County government is responsible for stormwater management.

The old map is dotted with hundreds of fresh-water marshes where rainfall accumulated and slowly seeped into the ground to recharge the underground aquifer of fresh water. By the 1960s the marshes were gone as the dredgers returned to facilitate development moving further inland as the population swelled from 76,000 people to 200,000. More streets were paved, more parking lots were created, more impervious service was produced that prevented rain from seeping into the aquifer. Instead the rain became polluted stormwater,

picking up waste and trash and pollution as it was hurried to an outfall in the bay. In the 1990s, Sarasota’s stormwater managers realized they needed to take a different approach than merely deepening the ditches and installing bigger pipes. In that decade, the community was struck with three “100-year rainstorms.” The neighborhood of Colonial Gables was hardest hit in 1992 when 25 inches of rain fell in three days. J.P. Marchand worked for the county then. “We had four feet of water in homes downstream from the Celery Fields,” he said. “It proved a great accelerator to policy.”

was clear to everyone that the old approach

as a backdrop, staffers and consultants went to work with the blessing of politicans. “Restoration became a priority,” said Marchand, who now works with the engineering consultancy Kimley-Horn and Associates. “The objectives were flood control, habitat enhancement, public recreation and water quality.” The showcase was the restoration of the Celery Fields, more than 300 acres ditched and drained but now restored to a more

of stormwater. The area is now a Mecca for birdwatchers. More than 210 species of birds have been spotted. “People are coming from all over the

for,” said Jeanne Dubi with the Sarasota branch of the Audubon Society. “ The Celery Fields are a great opportunity for low-impact tourism.” From a fresh-water marsh a century ago, to the county’s early agricultural heritage to rampant development and back to a fresh-water marsh, all with the intervention of several million

now the public.

But the county will need several projects

of stormwater if the objective is to mimic the natural cycle shown in the 1846 map.Not every project needs to be huge. Pelican Cove

Bay House Point Drive, which turned into a mini-river during a rainstorm. Verona Morse and other unit owners talked with the county, received a grant from the water management district, and cooperated with a neighboring

under-utilized stormwater retention pond. “Sarasota County was a great help,” she said.Expensive Successes The call to action a quarter century ago came atop new laws and regulations. The Federal Clean Water Act of 1972 gave teeth to governments to attack pollution. But Sarasota County was slow off the mark. “With regards to a utility system, the philosophy was, ‘If you don’t’ build it, they won’t come,’” said Theresa Connor, executive director of the county’s environmental services. “Developers had created little package plants to treat the sewerage from their development, more than a 120 of them,” she said. Some were failing, and most were discharging either directly or indirectly to the bay. People continued to come, and county policy changed. In the 1980s it bought most of the obsolete plants, and created four regional plants (with four more planned) with no discharge to the bay. Manatee County this year completed a major treatment plant, which does not discharge into the bay. The City of Sarasota is now creating a deep-well injection system to stop its discharge of highly treated wastewater. As important, the county began a program in 1999 to install sewer lines along the Phillippi Creek basin to replace old septic tank systems. That project is now about half completed. “We are seeing improvements from reduced [nutrient] loading and improved public health,” said Conner. One impact of reducing algae-feeding nutrients is better visibility in bay water, which facilitates seagrass growth. Northern Roberts Bay where Phillippi Creek empties was recently taken off the list of imperiled

water bodies, said Conner. In fact seagrasses are bouncing back. A 2011 survey indicates there are now more than 9,000 acres of patchy and continuous seagrass, up from 7.200 in 1950. However other indicators are not as robust. Scallops have not been able to

not showing up in numbers representative of a half-century ago. With all this good news, you would think

symposium to bask in the glow of demonstrable successes. Only Sarasota County Commissioner Jon Thaxton showed up.

Sarasota is a Kaleidoscope City. Turn the cylinder, and its mirrors and colored shapes create complex, colorful and shifting patterns which are challenging and pleasing to the eye. The beaches, the sunsets, and the banyan trees make ours a place of incredible beauty The Gulf of Mexico laps at our western shore, while bridges arch the waters of the bay, making each trip from the mainland to Siesta Key a visual adventure. To drive down 41 as it loops past the docks always brings a smile to my face, and I think: We are so lucky to live here!

of my earliest experiences in Sarasota. When Frank and I moved here in 1964, the town was smaller, of course. There were lots of famous artists and writers and not quite so many theatres. The Opera House had not yet evolved into an opera house. Originally called “The Edwards Theatre” when it was built in 1926, it was called “The Florida Theater”, and

of them mildly erotic. Our good friend, artist Julio De Diego was often found sweeping through the theater door in his long black cape, intent on viewing the latest offering. Among a modest collection of wives, Julio had once been married to Gypsy Rose Lee, and was a

Julio’s face? Check out his large self portrait hanging at the Van Wezel auditorium. Bird Key was originally the home of John Ringling North, nephew of the circus magnate, John Ringling. At that time, it was just a small island connected to the Ringling Causeway by a tree-lined causeway of its own. Along came

after we arrived in 1964, there was still a grand uproar over the intrusion of Bird Key, and huge worries about the effect it would have on the

called SAVE OUR BAYS committed to the philosophy of John D. MacDonald, who in 1962 had written a book entitled FLASH OF GREEN, based on the battle between developers and ecologists. In 1984, a movie by the same name was made by Victor Nunez starring Blair Brown and Ed Harris. And, guess what, guys – I was their Assistant Casting Director! Dozens of my friends were coerced into appearing in

assorted shots filmed around Sarasota. I tell you these tales to demonstrate that Sarasota has always been a Kaleidoscope City filled with color, adventure and surprise. Today, there are so many things to celebrate in Sarasota that we can hardly stay home. An amazing array of choices awaits us on any given day. We can take a walk on Siesta Key’s amazing beach with its powdery sands of ground quartz or visit the lovely pine forest on Lido Key. Occasionally we have had the privilege of kayaking the remarkable mangrove tunnels that border Lido, and sometimes we are even invited out to sea in a serious sailboat. We once sailed our own 16’ catamaran, but that was a while ago. We often gaze at the orchids at Selby

The Ringling Museum Grounds remain a special treat. I often took our young sons there to sniff roses in Mabel’s garden and to climb the banyan trees. (I wouldn’t do that now, of course, but it was perfectly “legal” in the old days.) The museum is free on Mondays, and has other inexpensive surprises, among them the monthly dance on the patio at Ca’ d’Zan, an event that takes place every third Thursday. All of the activities previously mentioned have modest price tags and generous membership privileges. For a larger investment, there are dozens of wonderful theatres, including the Asolo Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre, Golden Apple, Players Theatre and the Banyan Tree Theatre. The Sarasota Orchestra is highly acclaimed, as are the Sarasota Ballet, the Sarasota Opera, and the Sarasota Film Festival. Major road shows come through our town to be presented at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, while Circus Sarasota maintains the unique circus tradition of our amazing

Chef Giuseppe said the second-most popular menu selection is Vitello al Marsala e Porcini. The veal slices are indeed thinly sliced, the butter, onion, and porcini mushrooms succulent, and the Marsala wine sauce wonderful. If you’re looking for something from the sea, give the Gamberi alla Sorrentina a sample. Large shrimp are sautéed with extra-virgin olive oil, onion, capers, olives, fresh basil and vine-ripe diced tomatoes to provide an especially savory dish. All entrees come with a choice of soup or house salad, bread, the vegetable of the day and grilled polenta. The polenta, by the way, is superb. Be sure to save room for dessert. A highlight is Sole e Luna ($6.99), a rich chocolate soufflé served warm with Panna cotta custard. All desserts are served with Italian house coffee. Oh, and about the show. Chef Giuseppe has “Chef Cams” mounted over he and assistant chef Paolo’s work spaces that are featured on

work in the kitchen. The production is also provided via a large mirror above the prep space. Best viewing is at the counter. The Chef Cams are arguably the only such features offered in the Sarasota area and are a wonderful complement to allow foodies to watch how their food is prepared. Oh Mamma Mia! opened three years ago. Chef Giuseppe graduated from a culinary institute in Milan 25 years ago, spent three years as an apprentice, then two years in restaurant management. His healthy cuisine at the restaurant

But family beckoned him to Sarasota, and family extended to Oh Mamma Mia! “My 12-year-old son said he never got a chance to see me,” Chef Giuseppe said. “I realized that family was the only thing that mattered and we moved here.” Why Sarasota? “We’re just like everybody else,” he said with a laugh. “We came for the beach!”

Italian meal when you go to Oh Mamma Mia! Restaurant, you will leave as a member of an extended Italian family. Chef Giuseppe Urbano will offer a hello from his post at the open kitchen. Regular customers — it seems that everyone there is a regular — will offer a greeting. Don’t be shy to eye the dishes on the tables as you make your way through the intimate dining room to your table or place at the counter. The long counter separating the kitchen from the dining area offers the best seats in the house for the dining show. More of the production later. Oh Mamma Mia! offers regional Italian fare. Italian food is much more than pizza and spaghetti and meatballs: every region has special foods created from their special meats, vegetables, and fruits, and Chef Giuseppe’s menu traverses his home country for his patrons’ dining pleasure. A popular starting dish is Calamari Saltati ($9.99). The calamari rings are sautéed with garlic and served with red crushed pepper, extra-virgin olive oil, basil and tomato sauce. Antipasto all’ Italiana for two ($14.99) is a

Genoa salami, Prosciutto di Parma, Pistachio Mortadella, Sopressata, Capicolla, Asiago, Fontina, and provolone, mozzarella, and olives.

Another hearty appetizer is Bruschetta al Pomodoro ($8.99): grilled Ciabatta bread slices brushed with extra-virgin olive oil and garlic, topped with diced tomatoes Gaeta olives, and capers. Our visit saw more Mpepatella di Cozze ($8.99) come out of the kitchen at Oh Mamma Mia! than at many seafood shacks. The large mussels are sautéed with garlic, extra-virgin olive oil and crushed black pepper. You know the mussels must be good when Chef Giuseppe’s mother orders it. There are 20 pasta dishes offered at Oh Mamma Mia! Chef Giuseppe said the most popular fare, in fact the most popular menu item he has, is Melanzane della Nonna ($16.99). The vegan dish is battered sliced eggplant, stacked with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil and Parmiggiano cheese and served with a side of Penne Pomodoro. Eggplant is the most popular dish? “People are learning how to eat well,” the chef explained. “Everything we offer is contemporary Italian

today. It’s all regional, and the recipes represent Italy. They’re traditional recipes using all fresh products. It’s all about the food.” Another popular dish for carnivores is Lasagna alla Bolognese ($16.99). The six-layer

|A Dress Designer In Our Midst By Thyrza Jacocks

Fitted into a tight row of shops, in the Village, on Ocean Blvd. at 5l21 is one called “Dancing Shells” - which has nothing to do with dance or shells - but does introduce a clothing designer of considerable talent.

Her name is Stella Kreschenko and she was born in Russia on the Chechnyan border, “surrounded by the most beautiful mountains.” When the war came there her

radically changed the character of the town. She had, however, serendipitously won the lottery of a Green Card.

Part of her family had moved to the U.S. to the state of Georgia and Stella

everywhere - it was gorgeous!” (Her

grade and in three

in English.) Stella had

been a gymnast during her life in Russia with

a degree in Physical Ed., so on moving

to California (and marrying an Olympic Medalist) she took a job at “Club One” as a Personal Trainer. But, ever since having had a Boutique those years before, she yearned once again to design clothes. In her Siesta Key Boutique what is unusual about her line of clothing is her sense of their adaptive quality - they appear to have been designed by a Floridian for Florida climate and lifestyle; they could stylishly move from The Asolo Theatre, through dinner and a night-cap at Michaels, looking chic and original and comfortable. Stella’s designs are often made of gauze - a lovely, thin, semi-transparent gauze that falls from shoulder to hem and drapes gracefully. One sleeveless design ties in front at the hem, and each has some special touch that causes you to ponder “Why couldn’t I think of that!” The fabrics that Stella uses are primarily from the big design houses. She is admittedly admiring of most of the high-end fashion houses and designers, and is inclined towards those fabrics with her designs. One shirt

is a gorgeous slip-on Batik silk from Vogue fabrics that is hand-dyed and simplicity itself - and elegance itself.

A word regarding price here - these are moderately priced garments: shirts, handsome wide-leg “genie” trousers, graceful shorts that tie-not-belt, delicate blouses touched in lace. Original works of the designers art that are handmade, design worthy, and well priced. This may be the chance to own an original Stella design before she becomes famous. Just look for her label - “Dancing Shells.”

Here’s a great way to get high – high above land and sea that is. It’s fun, safe and exciting for the whole family, regardless of age or skills. Anyone can do it from ages 1 to 101. Afraid of heights… not to worry, as Ashley from Florida exclaimed, “I’m afraid of heights and this was a blast!” “On our custom made parasail boat you’ll get a gentle, dry takeoff and landing right off of the back platform unless you prefer a refreshing dip on your way in,” explains Kirk Gray, manager of

March is the gateway to spring and that means the beginning of warmer waters both bay and gulf. With the warmer than usual winter this year I bet March will be better than past years. That means all the bait schools could be here earlier than usual. As the water heats up a little, mangrove snapper will be in our chum slicks along with Cobia, Spanish mackerel, little Tunnies and even King mackerel and maybe small sharks. On the bottom we will be catching Porgies, and the larger Key West grunts.

will still be available around wrecks, ledges

cut bait or live shrimp right on the bottom. If the water temps are still cold, 58-65 degrees or so, we take handpicked shrimp and cut them in half. This will help the shrimp odor to be more noticed. We use 3/0 circle hooks with a small weight that slides down the mono leader to the hook. This is called a knocker rig. It’s simple and it can be found

OK, let’s see what a little offshore trolling might produce in March especially at the near end of the month where the air and the water temps are climbing upwards. We have a choice of using live bait such as

is called slow trolling. We slow troll over wrecks to see if anybody is home. This is how we catch Barracuda, King Mackerel

|Horticulture on Siesta Key... Siesta Key presents a beautiful environment to create an outdoor space that will offer you the best of all worlds. Nature has provided the footprint; it is our ability to create outdoor space taking advantage of all we have been offered. When I began my research on landscape design for two new homes under construction on Siesta Key, I did what I normally do, consulted a professional. After weeks of research for landscape partners, through professional acquaintances and reviewing websites, I discovered work I found simplistic and enjoyable “…Young has a distinct perspective and inherent passion for native horticulture

with a keen understanding of sustainable design.”

David W. Young, ASLA Principle, DWY Landscape

later; we met at the job site. The experience I have working with David is enjoyable and holds an obvious passion he brings with his work. He is a professional with good concepts and the ability to help you understand his vision after understanding your design requirements. David’s approach to landscape architecture is taking a lot of time to think about your family and lifestyle. His ideas range from simple tasks to complicated circulation. David states “I want to make your life easier and more enjoyable.” David’s current project on Siesta Key includes a family that recently remodeled their home. Until remodeling was completed, they spent a lot of time outdoors enjoying the luxury of our island. However once their home again became a comfortable and inviting space, they found most of their time was being spent inside. Understanding the reason for being indoors was due to the outdoors being less inviting and offered fewer creature comforts. They phoned David for a design plan. The work is still in progress as he quickly pointed out. “Another 3 weeks

designs and I readily visualize the completed project. There are so many things to consider about horticulture, it overwhelms me. Being the type personality that cringes at any “do over”, I attempt to cover my bases. I have worked with landscape contractors without landscape architects, and will work with them alone in the future. Those experiences

have been mixed with favorable results and then some, well maybe not so much.

To begin your research:

1. Think about what you need your landscape to provide. Aesthetics? Privacy? Shade? 2. Minimal vs. Heavy Designs – What is your vision? 3. Review the circulation of your area.

4. For a more tranquil setting, review water elements.5. Visit nurseries, search online landscaping and of course, clip those pics from magazines.

It seemed like the perfect job. Everything they said during the interview process made you practically salivate. Perks, prestige, vacations, opportunity to learn and advance, chances to grow, what’s not to love? Hearing “you’re hired” made it even more perfect. But somewhere between then and now, your sterling job has tarnished and there are things you’re really starting to hate about it. As you’ll see in “Bond Girl” by Erin Duffy, you’re not alone: sometimes, landing the best job can end up being the worst thing that ever happens. Alex Garrett was a wild child. Never one for pink and frou-frou, Alex spent much of her childhood playing with the neighborhood boys – until the day she beat them at baseball and they sent her home. That was the day that Alex’s father, a Wall Street banker, offered comfort and a chance to visit his workplace, and Alex’s life was never the same. Everything was exciting on Wall Street. Men in fine suits swaggered from desk to desk, the buildings soared and stretched, time was money and money was all anyone thought about. To Alex, it was perfect. As soon as she could, Alex went to college, then immediately landed a position in sales and trading at the prestigious Wall Street

thousands of Wall Street wanna-be’s would kill for a mere interview – but doing the actual work was not so sweet. As one of two women in the group, Alex quickly became “Girlie” with a folding chair, no desk, and no dignity in her work, an indentured slave tasked with fetching pizzas

and sandwiches, running high-formula reports, and toiling til long into the night. It took a long time, lots of mistakes, a hundred bleary-eyed late nights, and plenty of fortitude before Alex gained the respect of her boss and co-workers,

Still, life on the Street was one of never-ending parties, big-spending investors, and it was everything Alex ever wanted. But when a

workplace romance got complicated (wasn’t she warned about this?) and the economy soured, so did everything else. How could the perfect job make her feel so perfectly soulless? Ever want to smash t h e a l a r m c l o c k t o s m i t h e r e e n s o n a workweek morning? Uh huh, yep, you have… so you need to read “Bond Girl.” With an eye for detail that only someone with experience could possess, author Erin Duffy leads her readers through a high-

where lying is a way of life, chaos is the new normal, and alcohol is the way to deal with both. Duffy’s Alex is the perfect character for this setting, though: she’s sassy, savvy, smart enough to endure, and likeable enough to keep you hoping for a happy ending. If you’re looking for a good weekend retreat or a great book for the beach, look for this one. For any woman who’s ever had a love-hate-detest relationship with a job, “Bond Girl” is truly perfect.

Beach Reads Bio: The Bookworm is Terri Schlichenmeyer.Terri has been reading since she was 3 years old

and she never goes anywhere without a book. She lives on a hill in Wisconsin with two dogs and 12,000 books.

The green turtle has, and always has had, a serious problem—it tastes too good. When a vulnerable animal has to nest on land every two to three years, crawls slightly faster than a snail, weighs as much as 800 pounds, and tastes delicious, its

a subspecies of clever apes with an appetite and an ax are not good. From Sarasota to Matanzas Pass the early settlers were particularly fond of the green turtle. Its nests were often raided for the eggs, and the adult was a common item on the settlers’ menus. There is every reason to believe that this region once had as many green turtle nests as loggerhead nests, and that predation around the turn of the 20th century severely diminished the green turtle population. Today green turtle nests in Southwest Florida are rare events, averaging fewer than a dozen per year. The green turtle is not named for the color of its carapace, which is actually black. Green is the color

beneath the carapace. Its range was once even greater than that of the loggerhead, extending well down into Australia, the Red Sea, Madagascar, and everywhere in between. Like all sea turtles, the green turtle is an expert open ocean navigator, though the mechanism

used for its long transoceanic voyages is unknown. The current speculation is that it has trace elements of magnetic rock in certain parts of its brain, helping it to use

sites. It has been known to swim more than 1,400 nautical miles to return to the exact beach where it was born. Today the green turtle is in serious trouble throughout its range, largely because of human predation. Other than humans, only the 20-foot-plus tiger shark is known to feed on the adult green turtle. One reason humans prefer the taste of the green turtle is its diet. Unlike the loggerhead, hawksbill, and leatherback, the green turtle is an herbivore feeding on sea grasses, algae, kelp, and seaweed. Its meat is considered a delicacy and today is a product of aquaculture in the Cayman Islands. Green turtle soup can still be found on menus in the Florida Keys and elsewhere in the world. O c e a n i c pollution, habitat destruction, shrimp and

of adults all conspire to make the future of the green turtle anything but certain. That’s the trouble with tasting so good—it’s not

close to 7 billion hungry mouths.

“One of our goals is to make sure that grocery shopping never becomes a reason for anyone to cross back over to the mainland,” says Nancy. “Once you are on the island, you should be able to stay in that island frame of mind, even when you need a nice cabernet, a great steak to grill or food for your pet. We are on Siesta Key and our store maintains the ambiance of the Key, but we have just about any grocery item that our customers need.” Crescent Beach Grocery is a service-driven business say its owners. “We want to be the best small grocery in Sarasota in terms of the range and quality of the products we offer our customers and the clean, friendly environment we provide. We are convenient, but we don’t charge convenience store prices; we are comprehensive without being impersonal and we carry quality products that take a backseat to none. We also offer a shopping service and delivery for a nominal fee. No other grocery around here does that.”

In addition to the complete line of groceries and extensive list of exotic and gourmet items, the market carries a full range of deli items; signature salads, deli meats and cheeses, fresh-made sandwiches and heat-and-eat take-out meals. The meat counter carries selected

quality pork and chicken cuts and a hand-chosen selection of seafood. The grocery is especially proud of its large wine selection, which has been called the most extensive and comprehensive on the island. “We both like wine and enjoy tasting new wines,” Bill says. “We try to have about ten wine tastings per year for our customers so that they can experience

suit their palates. For our customers who prefer premium beers, we also have a varied assortment of microbeers available individually or in mix-and-match six packs.”
