Monrovia Council Moves Quickly to Safeguard $40 Million Plus in Redevelopment Assets

BY SUSAN MOTANDER

The Monrovia City Council, in an emergen-cy meeting on Tuesday, March 8, took action to pre-vent the state from seizing the Assets of the Monrovia Redevelopment Agency (MRA). Acting not only as the Council, but also as the board of the Agency, they placed a lien on the prop-erties owned by the MRA. Governor Jerry Brown had proposed that redevel-opment agency properties throughout the state be tak-en by the state to help sat-isfy the deficit. Legislation to that effect is currently pending. Under the sug-gested legislation, the state could sell those properties, but would need to satisfy the bond obligations. gold line foothill extension

regional connector transit corridor

Public comment is currently being analyzed for a draft environmental report on the second phase of the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension, continuing the line east from Azusa 12.6 miles to Montclair.

> The project is being constructed in two segments; Phase 2A, from East Pasadena through Azusa; Phase 2B, from Glendora to Montclair.

> Ground was broken last summer on the first phase, an 11.4-mile extension, from Sierra Madre Villa in Pasadena east with stops in Arcadia, Duarte, Irwindale, Monrovia and two in Azusa.

For more information, visit metro.net/foothillextension.

The Federal Transit Administration gave formal approval for preliminary engineering work to begin on the Regional Connector, bringing it a step closer to actual construction.

> A two-mile, fully underground light rail line has been approved for the route of the Regional Connector Transit Corridor connecting the Metro Gold Line, Metro Blue Line and future Expo Line through Downtown LA.

> The route will connect with the Metro Blue and Expo lines at 7th Street/Metro Center Station and with the Metro Gold Line at Alameda Street.

> The Regional Connector will save approximately 20 minutes of travel time by eliminating transfers through Downtown.

For more information, visit metro.net/regionalconnector.

IN THE WORKS

Voter-approved Measure R is funding new transportation projects and programs and accelerating those already in the pipeline.

How long since the breaking news of the first human heart transplant? Seems such a short time for something that today is so common. There are humans walking around all over the world with someone else’s heart, lung, liver, kidney, pan-creas. The list goes on.

Medical science is con-sidering human brain trans-plants. Now I find that really scary. Who exists when the transplant is completed?

How does that brain function in its new body? Does it take with it just its abilities or does it carry all its stored memories and learned lessons?

Think about it. How many times have you said, “If I had only known then what

I know now” or “If only my body could do the things it used to do”? Could it, would it, should it?

What if they put a 75-year-old brain in a 17-year-old body? Turn that around. What if they put a 17-year-old brain in a 75-year-old body? A mutant what?

Given a brain transplant as the premise, this column could take any number of turns. It could discuss the ethical issue. It could discuss emotional ramifications. It could discuss physical pos-sibilities or impossibilities. Again, the list goes on.

Discussing either situa-tion, a 17-year-old body and 75-year-old brain or 17-year-old brain and 75-year-old body, could be extremely profound. It could also be funny as hell. (How did that expression originate? What is funny about Hell? Some-thing for one of those brains to contemplate.)

If I were to look at my-self in a mirror and see a young, unspeckled, unwrin-

kled, non-sagging body, my brain-waves would become shock-waves. I’m not sure the old brain could handle it. Wonder how the old hus-band would like it? He could probably cope ‘cause, though the body would look good, it would still be the old brain telling it what to do.

Put a 17-year-old brain in this body and I fear there might be some rebellion. I can hear these joints respond-ing to that brain’s commands with, “I don’t think so, Hon-ey.” They say that quite often even to the old brain.

Somehow, leaving out the profundity of the ethical and moral issues, the practi-cality of the whole idea leaves me with a feeling of some-thing to be desired. My body and my brain have come this far together and I think that’s how they should stay.

If medical science of-fered you a choice, would you take a new body or a new brain? Or, would you opt to keep the combination you have? Think about it.

It was “Hats Off” to Civ-ic Club as it celebrated their 67th birthday at

a February meeting. With the club being an impor-tant presence in the area for volunteer service and generous philanthropy giving since it began in 1944, Taylor Nestlerode, who chaired the birthday meeting, chose the “Hats Off” tribute. Those at-tending wore their favorite

chapeau and table center pieces were a collection of beautiful and unusual hats. Special honor was paid to the 22 past presidents who attended that night, all still very active. Two charter members came, Anne Ty-ler, also a past president and Marjorie Peterson, fondly known as “Mama Pete” for the nursery school she has run since WWII. It was also special having

96 years-old Arlie Hahn, an honorary life member, present. She conducts a knitting class Friday morn-ing in her home for mem-bers who knit creations for the Civic Club Shoppe, a club fundraiser.

Present club president Carol Cerrina conducted the festive evening and gave greetings to all pres-ent for this special occa-sion.

Beginners of all ages welcome!

No the title of this col-umn does not refer to an unscrupulous Psychiatrist!

But have you noticed? Everything is shrinking to-day. The World is a lot smaller. Our pocket books are shrinking do to the seri-ous economic times. I’m shrinking! I used to be nearly six foot and now I can hardly reach 5 foot 10 in cowboy boots standing on my tippy toes.

There is still another serious “Shrink” that many people are completely un-aware of! It is the shrinking packaging changes that are taking place in the super-market? Candy bars have always gone up and down in size like a yo-yo. Each time they package them as bigger and better the price is increased substantially and then that big candy bar soon after rattles around in the package but the price remains the same. Today more and more manufac-turers are using this sneaky packaging process to raise prices. Paper towels have a unique concept. First they reduced the number of towel sheets on the in-dividual roll. Then came the multiple packaging concepts. Eight rolls in an economy pack. But then greed set in and soon the economy eight roll pack-age became the economy six roll package but at the same price.

Prices of a wide range of commodities are rising and people are seriously starting to feel it in their pocketbooks. The “Shrink/Raise” sneaky concept of price increasing has now become common practice

throughout the supermar-ket shopping aisles. Pea-nut butter manufacturers employed another concept of “Shrink/Raise”. The jar is the same circumference that it has always been but now they have a hidden “dimple” in the bottom of the jar that reduces the jar volume by two ounces. Boxes of breakfast cereal appear to be the same height and width but the manufacturers have re-duced the depth of the box from front to back and fill-ing the boxes substantially lower, thus decreasing the volume of cereal per pack-age. Coffee used to be in a one pound can, now it is 13 oz. The three-pound can of coffee is now 33 oz. but prices in most cases re-main the same.

Cookbook recipes have been effected also as many are no longer accu-rate. A recipe calling for a can of tomato sauce which was packaged in 6 oz cans are now 4.5 oz. but main-tain the same cost. Since the cans no longer matches the recipe, one and a half cans is now required to adjust to the recipe, thus leaving you with product expense and waste.

Not long ago I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. After changing the toilet paper roll in the bath-room the new roll was no longer a perfect fit for the roller. Closer examination revealed the roll of tissue is now being cut nearly 1/2 inch narrower.

Since many supermar-ket shoppers walk down the aisles scooping up products based on their

stomach, they are often unaware of the “Sneaky Shrink-Raise” packaging changes. Even the sale concept in some supermar-kets is misleading. As an example the shelf might indicate an unadvertised savings if you buy five of a particular item. How-ever, should you decide to purchase 7 of that item, the last two items are often charged at the single item price?

After all of my com-plaining to my wife, about Sneaky/Shrink pricing she now shops with me. She said she is, “Sale-ing” down the aisles ahead of me pointing out all of the various sale items that we should consider purchas-ing. She is constantly checking the prices per ounce of items to be sure it is a bargain. What used to be a simple 30-minute process of Saturday shop-ping, it is now an afternoon fiasco.

Recently, after read-ing my column comments about “sneaky shrinking”, my wife said, “Hey Wally, you forgot to mention the few EXCEPTIONS ... to your shrinking commen-tary.” Well, like a dummy, I bit on her tease, and asked her, like what excep-tion? Her giggly reply was really hurtful! “You forgot to mention your waist line and your appetite, they’re not shrinking! And frankly dear, she said, “If you keep on complaining about this shopping issue ... you may soon have a “Shrink” in your future!”

The Sneaky Shrink

Women’s Voices from the Muslim World: A Short-Film Festival Presented by Womens’s Voices Now

In a decisive move to honor women whose courage and heroism

have brought attention the plight of women in Muslim-majority countries, New York based non-profit Women’s Voices Now will honor Shoreh Agdashloo and journalist Lara Logan and the Egyptian women who saved her, Iranian po-litical martyr Neda Agha–Soltan and author and former political prisoner in Iran - Roxana Saberi at the opening night celebra-tion of Women’s Voices from the Muslim World: A Short-Film Festival. “We were so moved by the rescue of journalist Lara Logan by the Egyptian women and soldiers that we had to honor her and those brave women who rescued her,” stated WVN Executive Director Cat-inca Tabacaru in a recent

interview, “These good Samaritans responded to a woman in danger without thinking about her ethnic-ity or religious affiliation. This kind of strength and humanity is what we are drawing the world’s atten-tion to through our collec-tion of films. Through the media, we aspire to con-nect women of all societies under the common rights of freedom from abuse and injustice.”

Shoreh Agdashloo: First recognized for her stellar Oscar nominated performance in HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG, Ms. Agdashloo has repeat-edly chosen roles that have shown the plight and tri-umph of Muslim women. In 2009 she won an Emmy for HBO’s miniseries HOUSE OF SADDAM and the Satellite award for THE STONING OF

SORAYA M. Her brilliant narration of the documen-tary FOR NEDA for HBO in 2010 was just a foreshad-owing of her continuing efforts to promote social change through education.

Christina Asquith (Host/Guest Speaker) - An award-winning journalist for over 14 years, Christina has written for The New York Times, The Econo-mist, The Christian Sci-ence Monitor, The Guard-ian and was a staff writer at The Philadelphia Inquirer. Her book, “Sisters in War: Love, Survival and Family in the New Iraq” is based off of the 18 months she lived in and reported from Baghdad, Iraq.

Lara Logan (Honor-ee) – In the aftermath of the resignation of Hosni Mubarak on February 11, 2011 the American jour-nalist lost her crew in the frenzy and was immedi-ately swarmed by a hostile crowd that jostled her. She suffered what CBS initially called a “brutal and sus-tained sexual assault and beating,” from which she was eventually rescued by a group of Egyptian wom-en and soldiers. Accord-ing to The Sunday Times of London attackers used fists and flag poles against the CBS News Chief Cor-respondent, while wounds that remained hours later were the result of “”aggres-sive pinching.” Logan is re-portedly anxious to return

to her post at 60 Minutes. Neda Agha-Soltan

(Honoree) – Iranian icon, Neda Agha-Soltan was a 26-year-old Iranian woman who was shot to death on a Tehran street in the un-rest that followed the coun-try’s disputed election in June 2009. Soltan was described as an apolitical girl-next-door who loved traveling to Turkey where her hair did not have to be covered in public. Soltan became an instant symbol of the anti-government movement when a shock-ing video of her death was shared on social network-ing sites. The resulting HBO documentary narrat-ed by Shoreh Aghdashloo touched audiences around the world and Soltan be-came an international sym-bol of freedom and peace.

Roxana Saberi (Hon-oree/Guest Speaker) - Roxana Saberi moved to Iran in 2003 to work as the Iran correspondent for the U.S.-based Feature Story News. She filed reports for organizations such as NPR, BBC, ABC Radio and Fox News and was working on a book about Iranian society when she was arrested on January 31, 2009. Saberi was later charged and sentenced to eight years in prison on a trumped-up charge of espi-onage. In May 2009, under international pressure, an Iranian court overturned the sentence, and she was

released. Since her release, Saberi has joined others in bringing attention to the situation of human rights in Iran. Saberi has pub-lished in The Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and Chicago Tribune; and been interviewed on news programs of organizations such as FOX News, ABC, NBC, CBS, BBC, CNN, PRI, NPR, and C-SPAN, as well as shows such as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

About the Film Fes-tival: The Film Festival, pieces of which have been screened at the New York University, Ameri-can University, University of Michigan, Dearborn and Simmons College is quickly garnering atten-tion because of the timely relevance of its critical con-tent to world affairs. “By providing on-line access to a collection of relevant stories told by women of all faiths and backgrounds living in Muslim-majority countries, we are filling a void in today’s available information,” says WVN Director of Fundraising Miriam Wakim. “These are the exact voices that are left out of traditional news sources,” continues Wakim, “no complete representation is possible without the participation of the exact people living that life.” In addition to themed film programs, the Festival includes exciting

round-table discussions, book signings hosted by prominent authors, perfor-mance art pieces speaking to the issues addressed by the Festival and monitors playing the Festival’s ex-perimental films.

Shepard Fairey: This Los Angeles-based street artist first gained attention for the renowned Obey Gi-ant stencil to screen prints of political revolutionaries and rock stars. Fairey is the creative genius behind the red, white, and blue Obama campaign image that swept the globe during the Obama campaign. He has donated two limited edition, numbered prints. (photos available)

Charity Auction: Piec-es will be auctioned from Shepard Fairey, Rachel Monosov, Carly Ivan Gar-cia and Yapci Ramos.

Master Perfumer: Cel-ebrated Master Perfumer and Quantum Alchemist Libby Patterson from LPO will be showcasing scent journeys featuring flights of perfumes from the “Cradle of Civilization Collection” - Night Blooming Jasmines and Roses from the Desert.

The Festival also includes video booths streaming live messages from the American audi-ence, as well as a Closing Night Gala. For the com-plete schedule of films and events please log on to: http://womensvoicesnow.org/events

“Our Fish Come from the Finest Schools”

Pasadena City Coun-cilman Terry Tornek will host a dedication celebra-tion at the new Sidney F. Tyler Park on Tuesday, March 15, at 10 a.m.

Located on the me-dian between South Lake Avenue and Lakewood Place (green area in at-tached map), Pasadena’s only officially designated pocket park was named for Tyler by the Pasadena City Council in 2010.

The park features sev-eral tree species, including a large oak surrounded by two concrete semi-circles that serve as a seat wall or bench. A rose garden is

planted along the perim-eter of a grassy area.

Tyler, who represent-ed District 7 on the Pasade-na City Council from 1997 to 2009, devoted much of his time and energy to the protection of trees, open space and parks. Pasa-dena’s first tree protection ordinance was adopted during his tenure.

“Sid was a strong pro-ponent for an update to the Open Space and Conser-vation Element of the Gen-eral Plan,” said Tornek. “He worked diligently to ensure that parks in District 7 and throughout Pasa-dena were given adequate

funding and attention, and he took a personal interest in renovations to parks in the district.”

Tyler currently serves on the board of the di-rectors of the Eastern Si-erra Land Trust, which protects more than 6,000 acres through conservation agreements.

He will be at the dedi-cation, where a boulder bearing a plaque with his name will be unveiled and refreshments will be served.

For more information call the District 7 Office at (626) 744-4737.

Pasadena Community Invited to Dedication of Sidney F. Tyler Park

Pasadena Restaurant Week is a citywide event featuring the cuisine of many of Pasadena’s top dining establishments. Par-ticipating restaurants will of-fer at least three fixed price dinner and/or lunch menu items for visitors. Dinners will be three-course meals while lunches will be two course meals. Alcoholic beverages, gratu-ity and tax are not included in the price unless specified by the individual restau-rants.)

Pasadena Restaurant Week was conceived to reintroduce Pasadena as a restaurant destination and remind local residents and visitors that Pasadena offers dining experiences to satis-

fy foodies of all tastes at all price ranges. Participating restaurants will be prepar-ing special meals at extraor-dinary introductory prices.

Restaurants that are participating include some of Pasadena’s finest eating destinations including 1810 (eighteen ten), a/k/a An American Bistro, Bar Ce-lona, Celestino Ristorante, Derek’s Bistro, El Cholo, El Portal, Elements Kitch-en, Green Street Restau-rant, Japon Bistro, Malbec, Maria’s Italian Kitchen, Mijares, Noir Food and Wine, Pie ‘n Burger, Rob-in’s Wood Fire BBQ and Grill, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, The Terrace at the Langham, Trevo’s at the Hilton, Villa Sorriso and Ix-Tapa. It is anticipated that more than 30 local din-ing establishments will take part in Pasadena Restau-rant Week.

“It is very exciting to have so many fine res-taurants taking part,” said

Paul Little, president and chief executive officer of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce. “The event is generating a lot of enthusi-asm from our restaurateurs who are excited to be able to showcase their extraordi-nary menus for visitors dur-ing Pasadena Restaurant Week.”

A kick-off event is be-ing planned for Pasadena City Hall on Tuesday, March 22nd. Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard has been invited to join the cel-ebration on the steps of city hall.

The Pasadena Cham-ber of Commerce and Civic Association is a pro-fessional business organiza-tion. Since the earliest days of Pasadena, the Chamber has played a major role in the development of this in-ternationally renowned city. Since 1888, when the orga-nization was founded as the Board of Trade, the Cham-ber’s primary purpose has been the enhancement of both the business climate and the quality of life in Pasadena. The Pasadena Chamber of Commerce serves 1500 members.

People with signs which read, “ Are you really my Mayor?” and “ Hey, focus on YOUR Family”, plus “ Don’t use tax money for Bigotry and Hate” and “It’s good to be Gay” stood their allocated ground and asked the breakfast goers to consider all families as worthwhile and legitimate.

Focus on the Family believes (among other con-tested issues) that marriage should only be between a man and a woman and that “reparative therapy” is

possible for gay and lesbian people.

Those in attendance were closely watched by Arcadia PD and protest-ers were sectioned off into a safe protest zone (as is so often seen in political con-ventions and the like) on the south side of the Com-munity Center, a few yards from the entrance to the building.

Some of the protesting groups (Including Latino Quality Alliance, Marriage Equality USA and API

Equality) articulated their opinions further in the fol-lowing press release(s) which we reproduce in part:

“Divisive Rhetoric by “Focus on the Family” Group Draws Protest

by LGBT Community, Families and Supporters at Mayor’s Breakfast

Constituents Question Misuse of City Funds to Promote Culture

of Intolerance That Excludes and Harms Gay And Lesbian Families

Mayor Peter Amund-son’s provocative decision to invite Rev. H.B. London, a representative of Focus on the Family, known for its anti-LGBT teachings, oposi-ton to anti-bullying efforts in schools and promoting psychological “lesbian and gay conversion” programs stemmed from the fact that James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family cre-ated the organization in Ar-cadia.

A new “History Lives Here” historical marker showcas-

ing vintage and recent photographs and descrip-tions of the history of the last remaining mule pack station in the Angeles Na-tional Forest – Adams’ Pack Station -- will be un-veiled at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 17, as part of the station’s 75th anniver-sary celebration featur-ing live music and pulled pork sandwiches near the Chantry Flat picnic area at the end of Santa Anita Canyon Road.

This is the seventh marker dedicated by the Arcadia Historical Society in less than four years.

The special dedica-tion of the Marker in the area of the station and store, which is also a cel-ebration of five years of ownership by Deb and Sue Burgess, will include local political officials

and historians, and resi-dents and visitors of Santa Anita Canyon. It will take place between live acous-tic performances by John M from 12 noon - 2 p.m., and Cross Town Cowboys from 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The public is invited to participate and enjoy pulled pork sandwiches made to order in a Dutch oven.

Adams’ Pack Station History:

The barn and two-room bunkhouse/store that are still being utilized at Adams’ Pack Station in 2011 were built in 1936 by J.P. Steele, who was the first to obtain a special use permit for a pack station, outfitter store and park-ing lot at the end of a new road paved to Chantry Flat in 1935. Steele owned First Water Camp in the streambed directly below Chantry in the Angeles National Forest.

For the next three-quarters of a century, the station’s donkeys and mules would be the life-line for supplies to three

active resorts and about 200 cabins accessible only on foot in Big Santa Anita Canyon.

Frank Adams bought the pack station in the fall of 1938 and soon hired his brother Bill. Bill and his wife Lila packed supplies,

delivered mail, brought out garbage, sold ice cream and soda, greeted visitors and generally took

care of the canyon for 35 years.

In 1984, the Adams’ sold the station to Bill’s nephew Dennis Loner-gan and his wife, Jody, who ran the station for 15 years. Bouts with nature and the economy forced the Lonergan’s to sell the station and move to the city in 1999.

When Kim Kelley sold the station after five years of natural disasters and the closure of the road for nearly two years, canyon cabin owners Deb Burgess and her mother Sue Burgess restored the Adams name to signify a return to the Adams’ business model with the help of day-to-day general manager Richard Conforti and other volunteers.

Three Markers were dedicated in 2009, begin-ning with Number Four on April 29 at the Woman’s Club of Arcadia on First

Avenue, followed by two dedications during 75th Anniversary celebrations at the Arcadia Chamber of Commerce on July 16, and Santa Anita Park on opening day, Dec. 26 .

Upcoming Markers tentatively planned in-clude Lucky Baldwin’s original Oakwood Hotel and nearby train depot on First Avenue at Santa Clara, and the property along Huntington Drive that has been the location for the Pony Express Mu-seum, the Flamingo Hotel and Santa Anita Inn

The Society would like to thank the City of Arcadia for co-funding many of the Markers, in-cluding Adams’ Pack Sta-tion, which was installed by the station.

The Historical Marker Committee is chaired by Scott Hettrick with mem-bers Carol Libby and San-dy Snider.

Laugh, learn, and be inspired by Dr. Elliot En-gel as he returns for his 18th season with the San Marino Celebrity Series. This humorous and origi-nal presentation will be held in Arcadia on March 20, 2011, at 4 p.m.

The dynamic and fascinating Dr. Engel will focus on the American author L Frank Baum and his bestselling children’s story, The Wonderful Wiz-ard of Oz.

Popular English pro-fessor Engel taught at the University of North Caro-lina, Duke University, and NC State. While earn-ing his M.A. and Ph.D. at UCLA, he won the university’s Outstanding Teacher Award. Recently he was inducted into The Royal Society of Arts in England. This was a result

of Dr. Engel’s 30 years of academic work and service promoting Charles Dick-ens.

Dr. Engel’s ten books have been published in England, Japan, and the United States. He has lec-tured in every state and on every continent, even Ant-arctica. His mini lecture series on Charles Dickens ran on PBS throughout the country.

Reviewers have de-scribed Dr. Elliot Engel by saying, “His witty, engag-ing speaking style imparts hard, factual information while leaving his audience virtually spellbound punc-tuated by periods of laugh-ter and flashes of insight.”

The Celebrity Series is the primary fundraising activity of the San Marino Guild of the

Huntington Hospital.

This year funds will be used to purchase seven glider rocking chairs for the PICU. Also, profits will be used to underwrite the creation of a Virtual Mater-nity Tour at the hospital. Guild members have been directing Maternity Tours at the Huntington for over 50 years.

Next month on April 17, the 2011 Celebrity Series will conclude with “Magic Moments Tribute to the Drifters.”

This program will be held at the Embassy Suites, 211 E. Huntington Drive, Arcadia. Tickets are $30 each. For information and tickets, call 626-441-1465 or 626-793-1333 or email the Guild at [email protected].

Tucked in the deep shade of the California Oaks that line its streets is a little bit of paradise, Bungalow Heav-en residents say. On April 10, visitors can experience the aura for themselves as they stroll through Pasadena’s first Landmark District, tour-ing several exquisite Arts & Crafts-era homes. The neigh-borhood was recently added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Hundreds of Craftsman-style houses, known as Cali-fornia bungalows, were con-structed in the neighborhood between 1905 and 1925. The architecture reflected a move-ment away from ornate Vic-torian sensibilities to simpler structures in harmony with nature through the use of ma-terials such as river rock and redwood shingles, and by including wide verandas and expansive windows.

Bungalow Heaven in central-northeast Pasadena, California, is considered to have one of the largest col-lections of Craftsman homes anywhere in the United States. Many of the homes

maintain the authentic Arts & Crafts style, including the Mission-style furniture and décor of the period.

Eight homes will be included in the 2011 tour. During the self-guided tour of the historic neighborhood and home interiors, docents will be on hand to offer com-mentary and answer ques-tions. One of the homes will include a “Living History” tour, with actors portraying homeowners of the period.

This year’s Living His-tory home is a 1912 bunga-low that the owners have furnished with authentic mid-century and mid-cen-tury inspired pieces. “This eclectic mix of arts & crafts architecture and mid-century furnishings works beautifully, as several of the elements of both architectural styles have commonalities,” said Kristin Stone, the acclaimed creator and producer of “Inside Pri-vate Lives.” This is the third year Kristen has written, pro-duced and performed in the Living History Home tour.

For gardeners, Elizabeth Neaves, landscape archi-

tect noted for her historical perspective on residential gardens, will present two gar-dening workshops, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., with an emphasis on water-wise front-yard land-scaping. The workshops will cost an additional $5 for those attending the Home Tour, and $10 per person for those wishing to attend a Garden Workshop only.

Bungalow Heaven is lo-cated north of the 210 Free-way, between Lake and Hill avenues. It is bordered on the north and south by Washing-ton and Orange Grove bou-levards.

More information on the tour or on ordering tick-ets can be found online at www.bungalowheaven.org or by calling (626) 585-2172. Tickets are $18 per person if ordered in advance. On the day of the tour, tickets, as well as maps and an informational tour brochure, will be avail-able at McDonald Park at the intersection of Mar Vista Avenue and Mountain Street for $20 per person.

Controller John Chaing issued the results of his investigation into 18 city redevelopment agencies – of which Pasadena was one in question.

The scathing report alerts the public to some gross inac-curacies in many cities across California.

None of the 18 reviewed agencies met all of their fil-ing requirements. In some cases, annual financial reports were fed to the RDA govern-ing bodies in pieces, while others simply did not file. Auditors from the Control-ler’s office found that many of the RDAs’ department staff were confused by filing requirements, and the report recommends strong training

improvements for financial staff. The report also found that independent audits often failed to identify major audit violations and did not include all required information.

“The lack of accountabili-ty and transparency is a breed-ing ground for waste, abuse, and impropriety,” said Con-troller Chiang. “In whatever form local redevelopment takes in the future, the level of oversight and openness must be consistent with the amount of public dollars entrusted to their care.”

Two of the RDAs made questionable loans to their cities’ general fund. In Pitts-burg, the agency loaned $16.6 million in fiscal year 2009-10

without interest to the city for specified projects. By the end of the fiscal year, $15.4 million was unspent, allowing the city to earn interest on those funds. The City of Calexico’s RDA loaned $1.75 million to the city in 1993 with six percent interest. The City Council, acting as the RDA board, lowered the interest rate to 1.42 percent in 2004. While the loan was supposed to be fully repaid by 2009, the city still owes $1.1 million to the re-development fund, based on information provided to the State Controller’s office.

The full report can be found on the State Control-ler’s website at www.sco.ca.gov.

Although somewhat smaller in attendees, due in no small part to a dif-ficult economy and also it

was election night in sev-eral area cities, the guests nonetheless had a rip-roar-ing time New Orleans style

albeit at Santa Anita.Reigning as this year’s

king and queen over the Fat Tuesday’s festivities were long-time Methodist Hospital supporters Dave and Grace Cashion.

Each year Mardi Gras proceeds support different hospital programs. This year, the event will honor Dave’s commitment to the emergency department, with proceeds going to support that aspect of the hospital’s commitment to the community.

“I’m honored that the foundation would choose to support my efforts to-ward the hospital’s emer-gency department,” Dave said. “It is important that we do our part in support-ing the important work being performed at the hospital.” The emergency department provides criti-cal care to San Gabriel Valley residents 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Although seemingly smaller in attendance than the 2010 Mardi Gras, this year’s event was just as

exciting and as I can attest, the beer far better! Event Co-Chairs Jan McEachern

and Cheryl Wolf, along with their committee of 30 volunteers worked to

ensure this year’s festivi-ties exceed expectations of over 500 attendees.

appealed to the Mayor at the City Council Meet-ing. It was then that many residents requested that he choose a different speaker that better represents their community’s diversity. Among those who testified at that meeting and attend-ed today’s protest was Mrs. Marsha Aizumi, Arcadia resident and mother of a transgender youth. “I am here because I think Focus on the Family needs to be more open about their defi-nition of “family” and about how they regard transgen-

der people, “Ms. Aizumi said.

Arcadia residents ques-tioned the mayor’s use of city funds to pay for Lon-don’s travel and accom-modations. “City funds should be used to unify the community, not divide us. Spending tax payer funds to promote a religious orga-nization that supports anti-LGBT legislation and uses divisive rhetoric against LGBT families actually hurts all families and pro-motes division in the com-munity,” stated Rev. Dr.

Jonipher Kwong, Director, API Equality-LA, and or-dained Unitarian Universal-ist and Metropolitan Com-munity Church Minister

“Throughout Califor-nia, and throughout the country, the LGBT commu-nity and its supporters are working to create a world in which all families are respected and embraced. Time after time, Focus on the Family has made de-structive and bigoted state-ments that are far from sup-portive of families. By using religion to vilify a particular segment of society, Focus on the Family is destroying the fabric of this country. Why are tax dollars being used to support such mes-saging?” stated Robin Mc-Gehee, founder of GetE-QUAL, a national LGBT rights group.”

As Community Break-fast attendees walked from the parking lot to the en-trance, protesters sang tra-ditional peace songs, waved flags and greeted breakfast goers with “We are families too” and “Have a Nice Breakfast” and “Focus on ALL Families.”

London, who served as pastor at First Church of the Nazarene from 1985-91, quipped that he has received more attention about this visit to Arcadia than when he wrote his last book. Protester Marsha Ai-zumi, said she was protesting with her family Friday morn-ing and was heart-ened by the large turnout.

Letters were writ-ten to the editor of this newspaper (and others) expressed concern about the Mayor’ choice. One woman tearfully re-counted how her son has been harassed in school because of his transgender status. The Mayor of her city and the institu-tion Focus on The Family do not recog-nize the connection to LGBT harassment and their views.

Although Lon-don opposes gay marriage, he spoke about the importance of compassion and

unconditional love in the family. There was no men-tion of gay marriage in his speech.

Rev. H.B. London Jr., is vice president of ministry outreach/pastoral ministries at Focus on the Family ad-

dressed a sold out crowd of 300 plus in the main room of the community center.

The Arcadia police of-ficers and a SWAT vehicle were on hand as a precau-tion but there were no ar-rests.

Experience. Excellence.

If you or a loved one should arrive in our emergency department with signs and symptoms of stroke, it won’t matter that our 320 detector CT scan is currently one of only three in California. What will matter is — when time is critical — your physicians will have one of the most powerful imaging machines in the world as they work to save your life. World-class physicians and cutting-edge technology — that’s the power behind Huntington Hospital.

EXPERIENCE the power.

mered challenger Carolyn Naber by approximately 400 votes in the prickly District 6 City Council race which, at times, was highly controversial due to some rhetoric.

In District 1, it is Jacque Robinson over James Smith in another contentious race.

District 4: Gene Ma-suda beat Jill Fossleman by about 90 votes. Alas, as neither candidate got a

majority percentage as is required by law, a runoff election will be held.

The write-in candidate for a seat at PUSD proved no contest for incumbent Renatta Cooper.

In the seat 4 race, Kim Kenne, a PUSD consultant beat Gene Stevenson by a 1,500-vote margin.

Tom Selinske will face a runoff against Sean Baggett during the April 19 runoff.

Under the auspices of the MG Club of Southern California, a subgroup is be-ing formed to honor the clas-sic British sports scar which sadly halted production in Abingdon, Berks. England in 1980.

For those of you who may know not be familiar with Ye Old Speckl’d One ( the MG ), it is, without excep-tion, the most popular Brit-ish sports car ever produced anywhere in the world. The love, for which, any true MG

owner can verify and declare Ad nauseam.

The rugged, timeless de-sign is still driven worldwide and the popularity of what Jasper Gerard of the London Daily Telegraph described as “the nation’s favorite car” is only exceeded by the num-bers of us who spend all their funds on that vital Lucas part to complete the restoration.

Some of us have been known to collect parts cata-logs and such for research and development – in lui of

an explanation to our spous-es for the frequent UPS de-liveries from Moss Motors or Victoria British.

This local group of MG aficionados will be centered in the San Gabriel Valley and according to its organizer, Mi-chael Lee, and will hold an organizational meeting this Saturday, March 12 at 9:30

a.m. at the Peach Tree Cafe in Monrovia.

Toyota use to have a rather catchy ad slogan/ - “Get your Hands on a Toyo-ta, you’ll never let go.”

This actually really ap-plies to MG owners much more so than Toyota. Come on, how many 65-74 Toyotas do you see on the road?

cal school and community college districts. The pass through funds would con-tinue to go to those districts according to Alvarado in Monrovia, the districts are the Monrovia Unified School District and Citrus Community College. How-ever, it was his understand-

ing that the state could take any other money not obli-gated to the school or bond obligations. According to Alvarado the city’s share of the tax increment money is approximately $1.5 million per year. He anticipates that this amount could rise by 5% annually.

The city’s action on Tuesday was an attempt to create another obligation on the properties owned by the city and under the MRA’s control.

If the current legisla-tion passes in the state legislature, the control of all redevelopment agen-

cies, statewide would pass to successor boards. Each agency would have a board comprised of one member appointed by the local city council, one by the school district, one by the commu-nity college district and four by the local county.

With more than 400

redevelopment districts statewide and 80 here in Los Angeles County, the bureaucracy is staggering. According to Alvarado and Darlene Sanchez, who heads up the MRA, no pro-visions have been outlined for funding these entities.

Ironically State Con-

troller John Chaing had just issued a press release on the results of a redevelopment scoping session his office did in 18 cities. There were considerable impropopri-eties noted in many cities cited in the report. We have placed the report.

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist John (Maus) Walk-er formed “The Walker Brothers Trio” in the early 60s which achieved suc-cess around Hollywood as a rock and roll band. In 1964, Mr. Walker signed on to Smash/Mercury/Phil-lips Records in Los Angeles with fellow bandmate Scott (Engel) Walker. The two singers, now called “The

Walker Brothers”, created a distinctive new sound: a vocal blend which was set against new dramatic ‘wall of sound’ symphonic pro-ductions, earning them a unique place in popular music history with iconic hits like No. 1’s “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore”and “Make It Easy On Yourself”, and chart topping hits “My Ship Is Coming In”, “No Re-grets”, and several others. So distinctive is The Walker Brothers sound that Roland Music Company added “Walker Brothers” samples in their recording equip-ment.

John Walker continued his success as a solo record-ing artist with hits like “An-nabella” , appearances on numerous television shows like The David Frost Show, The Sandy Shaw Show, Shindig, Ready Steady Go, Ninth Street A GoGo, plus performances throughout Europe. He moved back to America in the mid 80’s, and turned his atten-tion to the recording pro-cess - eventually creating

his own studio, recording label, and a series of criti-cally acclaimed CD’s. He is currently at work on his seventh CD…

Mr. Walker is the only Walker Brother still per-forming and making pub-lic appearances, including many for charitable causes. Recent shows and appear-ances include guest starring on the German megashow “Hits Giganten”, perfor-mance on the PBS “British Invasion” production, a 60+ date tour in 2009, and another multidate tour in 2010, interviews on London BBC national TV, guest star-ring in Las Vegas with Peter Asher and other hitmakers of the 60s in summer 2010, and many others. In 2009, he released an autobiogra-phy (“The Walker Broth-ers No Regrets Our Story by John Walker and Gary Walker”), a fascinating col-lection of stories recalling the early days of the LA music and club scene, living in London in the “Swing-ing 60s” during the group’s height of popularity, all the way up to the present. Two

more studio videos were released on Youtube of Mr. Walker performing his original “I Can’t Let You Go” and “The Shadow Of Night”, tracks off his “Just For You” CD. Mr. Walker enjoys traveling and tour-ing with his wife Cynthia, visiting with his grandchil-dren, woodworking, and is involved in charitable fund-raising events.

In 2010, Mr. Walker was diagnosed with Stage 4 Liver Cancer, received treat-ment, and is on the road to recovery. Although he had to cancel his UK/East Coast engagements during that time, he is once again ready take to the stage, and will perform closer to home for his first show since his diag-nosis - Wednesday, March 16 at Café 322 in Sierra Madre, and will be adding more dates to his schedule. For the past 3 years, the Counseling and Guid-ance Department at Oak Avenue Intermediate School, with the support of school administration and staff, has facilitated a unique event designed to educate students regarding the destructive influence of bullying. For two days in March, the school library is turned into a museum which highlights the nega-tive impacts of bullying on young people. Titled the Oak Avenue Museum of Tolerance, the project rep-

resents a collaborative ef-fort of staff members who saw the value in delivering the message to students that all humans deserve respect.

The exhibits are com-prised of student written work along with multime-dia presentations. The ob-jectives of this project are to promote acts of kind-ness on the campus, to give young people the tools and strategies to deal with con-flict/harassment issues in a healthy way, and to make Oak a bully free school.

Sally Kellerman grew up in the San Fernando Valley. She attended Hol-lywood High School, where she was “bitten by the acting bug,” and con-tinued her studies at Los Angeles City College. She also studied at the Actors Studio in Los Angeles with Jeff Corey and famous classmates, including: Shir-ley Knight, Jack Nicholson, Robert Towne, Robert Blake, James Colburn and Roger Corman.

The actress has amassed an impressive Ré-

sumé of hundreds of mem-orable feature film, televi-sion and theatre credits. She began her television career appearing on “Out-er Limits.” Other televi-sion appearances include roles on the Pilot Episode of “Star Trek” and in epi-sodes of “Kraft Suspense Theatre” and “Bob Hope Presents The Chrysler Theatre.” She has starred in “Back To School,” op-posite Rodney Danger-field, “Big Blonde” and “Boynton Beach Club.” Kellerman’s film work in-cludes starring roles in the movies the “Last of The Red Hot Lovers,” “Slith-er,” “Foxes” and “A Little Romance.” She has been doing voiceover work for over 30 years for clients like Hidden Valley Salad Dressing and Milky Way, and everything in between.

The main source of

her passion besides her family and film career is her love of music and sing-ing, which she has been doing since she was a child. Under contract with Verve Records at the age of 18, Kellerman has been blessed with a signature voice and style as well as an uncanny ability to make a song her own.

Her current critically acclaimed CD entitled, “Sally,” was released re-cently. The Los Angeles Times has hailed Keller-man as “someone who has the full package of skills…required to establish her-self as a first-rate jazz and blues-tinged vocalist.” Cabaret Scene Magazine has written: “Kellerman, in her own natural style, buoyed by a phenom-enally youthful radiance, gives a sexy, sensuous set of blues, swing, and deliv-

ers ballads in her signature raspy, languid growl. She is easy to listen to, easy to look at and uncompromis-ing laid back. Her new CD, choice of material and first rate collaborators show a resurgent musician with a solid Résumé and a bright future.” Music Connec-tion Magazine wrote: Kell-erman is not only gifted with a deep, rich voice, but her music also embodies a unique and original sound that is unmistakable. This lady sings with the person-ality of a true actress. Sally Kellerman is one class act!” Kellerman’s CD is avail-able in all stores, on Ama-zon.com and on ITunes.

She is married to re-nowned film producer and Renaissance man, Jona-than D. Krane. Kellerman adopted her sister’s daugh-ter, Claire, in the late 60’s, and then she and Krane

adopted twin children at birth, Jack and Hannah. Kellerman was recently honored with the Art Gilm-ore Career Achievement Award presented by the Pacific Pioneer Broadcast-ers. Kellerman will soon be releasing a new CD. Kellerman also contributes time and energy to numer-ous worthy causes includ-ing the Hereditary Disease Foundation, Jewish Family Services, AIDS Research and the environment.
