The Smartest Card of AllSeptember is Library Card

Sign-up Month, and Fort Bend County Libraries wants

to make sure that your child is among the two-thirds of Ameri-cans that carry the smartest card of all – a library card.

The best investment any parent can make is a library card. It’s free. It opens doors to benefits that kids can’t break, wear out, or outgrow. Studies show that children who are read to in the home -- and who use

the library -- perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.

A recent study by the American Library Association also showed that families use libraries to spend time together; 44 percent of survey respondents report taking their children to the library for this reason.

A library card provides free access to videos, DVDs, CDs, software, and books. Libraries also offer a wide range

of other items to lend to children and their families, including toys, games, and puzzles. Most importantly -- librarians are on hand to help recommend materials suitable for various ages and interests.

A library card becomes even more valuable when someone wants to access many of the library’s online resources from home. The cost of subscribing to these databases as an individual would make them unaffordable to many people, but a library card levels the playing field by making them available to everyone free -- as long as you have a library card.

“We want to remind everyone that a library card gives them access to many library resources online 24/7,” said Clara Russell, library director. “The library’s resources that can be accessed through our website – such as the databases, Homework Help, OverDrive eBooks, and other online services – are available and can be accessed at any computer outside the library that has an Internet connection.”

For more information on how you can sign up for your library card, visit the Sienna branch library or call the library’s Public Information Office at (281) 341-2677, or see the library’s website at www.fortbend.lib.tx.us and click on the “Online Library Card Application” link. ■

I had a cholesterol screening test. I have received values for total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides and TC/HDL ratio. I am a bit confused about what this all means. Can you explain?

A cholesterol panel is obtained to help ascertain one’s potential risk for heart disease and stroke. When one produces too much cholesterol, it is deposited into heart arteries and other major blood vessels in the body, increasing the likelihood of a stroke or heart attack.

The panel measures the total cholesterol, or amount of fatty substances in one’s blood. The LDL measures the bad cholesterol. This type of cholesterol, when over produced, is what is found in heart arteries and major vessels. The HDL is the good or healthy cholesterol which helps prevent the bad cholesterol from depositing in arteries. The more HDL one has the better. Triglycerides are another type of fat produced in the body and can also increase the risk for heart disease if elevated. The TC/HDL ratio is the ratio of the total cholesterol to the HDL (total cholesterol/HDL) or good cholesterol. This number is also an indicator of risk for heart disease and stroke.

The numbers are different for men and women. In men, a TC/HDL ratio of 5 indicates average risk, a ratio of 3.4 indicates half of the average risk and any ratio greater than 9.6 indicates double the risk for heart disease. Women are more likely to have higher HDL values than men. The TC/HDL 4.4 indicates average risk for women, 3.3 or less indicates one half the average risks, and more than 7 indicates double the risk. For more detailed information please visit www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/index.htm.

Who knew, except the Creator, that a visit to her grandparent’s small ranch in South Texas would forever change the life of twelve year old Jessica Rivera?

On a cushion of hay, punctuated by a nanny goat’s occasional bleats of pain, Jessica witnessed the birthing of a kid, and God revealed the calling for her life; the care and well being of animals.

Clients of The WellPet Center in Sienna Plantation are fortunate to reap the benefits of Dr. Rivera ’s l i fe long commitment to animal care. More than the convenience of a complete veterinary hospital only minutes from your front door, Dr. Rivera and The WellPet Center bring the comfort of knowing that you and your pet have found your veterinary home.

The WellPet Center provides comprehensive physical examinations, treatment, vaccinations,

dental care, spay, neuter, soft tissue surgery, minor orthopedic surgery, ultrasound, allergy testing, dermatology, arthritis and pain management.

By performing diagnostic testing at their on-site laboratory, and using digital x-ray technology, Dr. Rivera can develop comprehensive treatment plans more quickly. There is no lag time waiting to get test results from an outside lab unless a special test is needed.

“I present the best recommendations for my patients,” she says. I’m here to offer guidance and answer all the questions you have. If the pet owner is unable to follow the initial recommendation, we work together as a team to provide the best care possible for their pet, and my clients are walked through the entire diagnostic and treatment plan.”

The WellPet Center fills prescriptions from an extensive in-house pharmacy, offers antibiotics, pain medications, flea, tick and heartworm prevention alternatives, plus prescription wet and dry diets. Separate areas are provided for dogs and cats.

“From the very beginning, establishing my practice in Sienna Plantation felt right,” says Dr. Rivera, a graduate of Texas A & M University. “And each new client confirms that feeling. The pets and people in Sienna Plantation are extremely warm and welcoming.”

The WellPet Center of Sienna Plantation is located in the same plaza as HEB and UT Physicians at the end of the block under the clock tower. Dedicated to meeting the medical needs of your pet, Dr. Rivera and her team commit that your pet will receive quality care with compassion and respect in a warm and friendly atmosphere. The WellPet Center of Sienna Plantation is accepting new clients. Schedule a visit today.

Feline AIDSFeline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a potentially

fatal virus of the feline species that can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (feline AIDS). According to a recent study, the prevalence of FIV exposure in North America shows that about 2.5% of cats have been exposed to the virus. Although, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and FIV belong to the same family of viruses, the viruses are species specific and there is no risk of cross infection between the immunodeficiency viruses of cats and people.

The primary route of transmission of FIV between cats is via the saliva of an infected bite wound. Outdoor male cats are most commonly infected with FIV, as they tend to be more prone to aggressive biting behavior. Feline immunodeficiency virus can also be transmitted via the placenta from infected queen to kitten.

Primary acute FIV infections usually will present with a high fever and enlarged lymph nodes throughout the entire body along with lethargy and inappetance. If your veterinarian is suspicious of feline immunodeficiency virus a blood test that detects antibodies against FIV is performed. The detection of antibodies against FIV in the serum of cats that have never received a FIV vaccine means the cat has been exposed to the virus and can indicate persistent infection, but doesn’t necessarily mean the cat is diseased. Unfortunately, the test does not differentiate between antibodies produced by the infection and vaccine-induced antibodies, therefore a follow up confirmatory test should be performed if the first test is positive. A feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus snap test is recommended yearly for cats that roam outside.

Although the development of cancers like lymphoma can be the outcome of infection due to a suppressed immune system, not all cats infected with the virus will develop cancer. However, most infections will result in a wide range of secondary infections like gingivitis or a whole mouth infection that comes and goes. Once a cat is infected with FIV it will remain infected for the rest of its life, however some cats may not become ill and show clinical signs. In fact, it may be weeks, months or even years after the initial infection with FIV before a cat will develop clinical signs of illness. Since there is no treatment against this virus itself, only symptomatic treatment can be given to cats that develop secondary infections to keep them comfortable should their illness progress.

Known FIV positive cats should stay completely indoors at all times as to not infect other cats. If it is a multi cat household, they should be housed separately. Good hygiene should be used when there is interaction between all pets in the household. Healthy cats can be vaccinated for FIV, however the vaccine is controversial and not 100% effective, so avoidance between cats is key. More discussion with your family veterinarian is recommended before getting the vaccine.

Please visit your family veterinarian to discuss feline immunodeficiency virus in more detail.
