they were Asian Indians, Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese amongother designations. Hispanic or Latino residents had roots in Mexico, Puerto Rico,Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Spain, and Spanish-speaking Central and SouthAmerican countries.Over the holiday season, its mind boggling to think of all the traditions being
celebrated, foods being prepared, and languages being spoken throughout SiennaPlantation. To me, Sienna represents what is great about America: that people of allraces, ethnicities and ancestries are free to engage in the pursuit of life, liberty andhappiness. Does our Union have imperfections? Of course. Is there any other placethat I would rather live and raise a family? Absolutely not.Zondria McKinney, a home-grown Missouri City girl and owner of Sienna Dance,
is an example of the possibilities that can be fulfilled in America. As a little girl, shedreamed of living in a community like Sienna Plantation, and now she and her familyare Sienna residents. To teach dance classes at the Brushy Lake Fitness Center toneighborhood children sharing the passion for dance she had as a child, and still hasafter 30 years of dancing, is like a dream come true. Learn more about Ms. Zondriaand Sienna Dance in the article, Dancing in Sienna. There is a saying that beauty is only skin deep. So, the European Wax Center of
Missouri City would like the men of Sienna Plantation to show a little more skin overthe holidays. If after reading, The Top Ten Reasons for Men to Keep their Body Hair, noneof those considerations are important to you, consider taking advantage of their freewax offer. (Ladies are welcome to show some skin, too.)And ladies, as the holiday season kicks into full gear, arm yourself with the power
of a new hairdo. Kricket McWashington, owner of Kafé of Image Salon invites youto try something new. Read the article, Be Bold, Be Beautiful, Be You, to learn moreabout the salon, the December special offer, and upcoming events happening at Kaféof Image. In the midst of all the holiday hoopla, remember that your health is one gift you
never want to neglect. If you don’t have a physician, or if you’re thinking aboutswitching doctors, take a look through the Sienna Plantation News Doc Directory andfind someone. The docs are highly credentialed, conveniently located, and acceptingnew patients. So, however you celebrate the season, my wish is that you enjoy health and
happiness always.

Put yourself in your pet’s placeAn unplanned trip to the animal hospital is nota visit you ever want to make, and especiallynot during the holiday season. Twinkling lightsand holiday decorations give your home afestive feel, and pose potential peril for yourpets. Strings of lights make the house lookcheery and bright, and create a stranglinghazard. Extension cords add extra reach, andan unwanted shock when used as a chew toy.Lit candles give rooms a warm glow, and thepotential for your pet to get burned. Lookaround your home. Put yourself in your pet’splace. It’s up to you to keep the holidays happyand healthy for every member of the family. ■

Doctors’ Orders for a Happy,Healthy Holiday Season
For most people, the holiday seasonis a time of religious observation andcultural celebration. Smart planningand a few thoughtful substitutions canensure your good times don’t wreckhavoc on your waistline or wellbeing.
Tips for a Hangover-FreeHoliday Season
• Some studies show that alcoholicbeverages like vodka, gin and beerproduce less severe hangovers thanbrandy, whisky and red wine.
• Have a nonalcoholic drink betweeneach alcoholic drink to keep your-self hydrated and to maintain a lowblood alcohol level.
• Slow down alcohol absorption byeating before you drink.
• Before you call it a night, drink a bigglass of water or other nonalcoholicbeverage to counterbalance the di-uretic effect of alcohol which maycontribute to hangover symptoms.
Managing Food Pushers

When joint pain and loss of mobility no longer respond to conservative treatments, joint replacement may offer a return to daily activities. Advancements in total joint
replacement surgery provide for more accurate positioning of the implanted prosthetic joints and better pain management for post-surgery recovery. In addition, a unique program at the Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital Total Joint Replacement Center – one that has earned 100 percent patient satisfaction – maximizes care for patients who undergo total knee and hip replacements.
Personalizing knee replacements
Progressive knee replacement technology uses custom femoral and tibial positioning guides created from each patient’s MRI or CT scan. This custom instrumentation provides surgeons with greater precision in bone cuts required to properly position the prosthesis.
Memorial Hermann-affiliated orthopedic surgeon Thomas Parr, M.D., said accuracy is the key when it comes to patient comfort and function as well as longevity of prostheses. “Implants placed properly have a much longer functional life than those placed with even a little malalignment or malrotation,” says Dr. Parr.
Improved pain management for patients in the Total Joint Replacement Center at Memorial Hermann Southwest starts with nerve blocks. Memorial Hermann-affiliated anesthesiologists manage these during the first 48 hours following surgery. With pain under control, patients are better able to regain range of motion, which helps speed recovery.
Focused joint care leads to better outcomes
Standardized care delivered by the same highly trained and patient- centered staff of affiliated orthopedic surgeons, nurses and therapists has driven the success of the Total Joint Replacement Center.
According to Memorial Hermann-affiliated orthopedic surgeon Derek Jones, M.D., patients undergoing total joint replacement
have specific needs that are better met in the Center. “Having a nursing and physical therapy staff focused on these needs leads to better care,” says Dr. Jones.
Wayne Alani, M.D., agrees. “Rehabilitation is better and faster when patients stay in the Center,” says Dr. Alani, an orthopedic surgeon affiliated with Memorial Hermann.
The Center’s program begins with a preoperative educational class, where patients engage in question- and-answer sessions to learn about anesthesiology, physical therapy, medications and home health needs. They also tour the hospital and meet the Center’s staff.
Following surgery, patients spend three nights in the Center on the hospital’s 9th floor. Here they join together in physical therapy and group dining.
Each day begins between 5 and 6 a.m. when patients eat breakfast in their rooms. Twice-daily physical therapy sessions are separated by rest and meals.
“They really put you through some rigorous physical therapy, but you know that’s what you need,” says Brenda Lindsey, who was able to drive one month after her knee replacement.
With the Center limited to 22 patients who undergo knee or hip replacement surgery in the same week, a special camaraderie develops. According to Deborah Collings, R.N., patients encourage and help each other. “It’s something that I haven’t seen anywhere else,” she says.
Julie Fix stayed in the Center following both her knee replacements. She praises the psychological benefits. “You know you’re not alone,” says Fix. “You share histories and recovery, and you begin to compete in physical therapy. You are consoled, inspired and challenged and I think that might be a greater benefit than the physical ones.”
Her surgeon, Lin Jones, M.D., said the emotional boost helps with a very difficult, painful operation. “The program really has been effective,” he says.

MARSHALL YOUR MONEY
Employer-sponsored retire-ment plans are more valu-able than ever. The moneyin them grows tax-de-
ferred until it is withdrawn at re-tirement. Contributions to a 401(k) plan reduce your taxable in-come. Distributions from tax-de-ferred retirement plans, such as a401(k) plan, however, are taxed asordinary income and may be sub-ject to an additional 10% federaltax penalty if withdrawn prior toage 59 ½ .
Particularly in times of finan-cial uncertainty, figuring out howto manage the assets in your re-tirement plan can be confusing.Conventional wisdom says that ifyou have several years until retire-ment, put the majority of yourholdings into stocks. Historically, stocks outperform other invest-ments over the long term. Pastperformance, however, does notguarantee future results. And, thestock market has the potential tobe extremely volatile.
Managing Your Retirement PlanBy James Marshall
In spite of its volatility, the stock market maystill be an appropriate place for your investmentdollars – particularly over the long term, and re-tirement planning is a long-term proposition.Since most retirement plans are funded by auto-matic payroll deductions, they achieve a conceptknown as dollar cost averaging that can takesome of the sting out of a descending market.Dollar cost averaging does not ensure a profit orprevent a loss, but it can be an effective way forinvestors to accumulate shares to help meet long-term goals.
Diversification is a basic principle of invest-ing. It means spreading your holdings among dif-ferent investments (like stocks, bonds, etc.) as ameans to potentially lessen the impact of loss inany one investment. Do the same for the assets inyour retirement plan. Keep in mind, diversifica-tion does not guarantee against investment loss,it is a method to help manage investment risk.
A guaranteed interest contract offers a set rateof return for a specific period of time, and is typ-ically backed by an insurance company. Gener-ally, these contracts are very safe, but they stilldepend on the security of the issuing company.
Periodically review your plan’s performance. Most likely, you have chances to shift assets fromone fund to another. Use these opportunities toreview your plan’s performance and adjust yourinvestments as needed.
