THE GAMEThe Siena Heights football team is set to take on NAIA top-ranked Saint Francis (Ind.) for the Homecoming contest and Senior Night. The Mid-States Football Association Mideast game is slated for Saturday at 7 p.m.

SHU is currently 4-2 on the season with a 2-0 MSFA Mideast League record. Siena Heights is on a four-game winning streak, scoring 30 or more points in their past four contests.

The defending National Champions are currently 6-0 for the season and 2-0 in the MSFA Mideast League. Last week, USF defeated No. 20 Concordia, 35-18.

THE HISTORYThis will be the sixth match-up of these two programs since the inception of SHU football and their first varsity season in 2012. Siena Heights is 1-4 against USF, winning their only contest over the Cougars in 2014, the same year they were co-champions of the League.

The 2017 contest will mark the second year in-a-row that the Saints and Cougars will face off for the SHU Homecoming game. Last season, the Saints came close to an upset over then No. 5 Saint Francis with a 24-22 loss.

PLAYERS TO WATCHLeading the Siena Heights offense with seven rushing touchdowns is D’aries Davis, totaling 752 yards to break the SHU single season record. Last week, Davis managed a 191-yard game with three touchdowns. The Saints’ quarterback, Lucas Barner Jr. has thrown for a total of 10 touchdowns for 954 total yards. In the air, Deontae’ Rush has made six touchdown receptions for 285 total yards.

The mission of Siena Heights University, a Catholic university founded and sponsored by the Adrian Dominican Sisters, is to assist people to become more competent, purposeful, and ethical through a teaching and learning environment which respects the dignity of all.

Home of the SaintsThe multimillion dollar O’Laughlin Stadium and Dr. Mike and Lynne Dawson Field was completed in the fall of 2011. This state-of-the-art facility serves as the home for several Saints athletic programs, including soccer, lacrosse, track and field and football. Thanks to the generosity of benefactor Mary Spencer, the stadium is named after 1958 Siena Heights graduate and Adrian Dominican Sister Jeanne O’Laughlin. The field is named after longtime SHU benefactors. Mike is a current member of the SHU Board of Trustees and an assistant coach on the SHU football team, while his late wife, Lynne, was an avid SHU supporter until her passing in 2009. An Olympic-caliber Beynon running track circles the field, which is Super Bowl-quality Field Turf. The stadium also has approximately 1,800 permanent seats. A second phase of the project -- the construction of the Mary and Sash Spencer Athletic Complex -- was completed during the summer of 2012.

Meet the President • Sister Peg Albert, OP, PhDSister Peg Albert, OP, PhD, was named the 10th President of Siena Heights University in 2006. She received a bachelor’s of arts degree in sociology from Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich., and master’s and doctorate degrees in social work from Barry University in Miami, Fla. She did her post-doctoral work at the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, Mass., and completed post-doctoral classes at Barry.

Since arriving at Siena Heights, Sister Peg has led several new initiatives, including the establishment of a nursing program, which conducted its first classes in fall 2008. During her tenure as president, Siena Heights has seen increases in both enrollment and fundraising. Her student-centered approach has meant physical improvements to the residence halls, dining hall and student union. In spring 2008, she announced Siena Heights was freezing tuition rates for its Adrian campus undergraduate students for a 2008-09 academic year, a move almost unprecedented for small, private universities.

An associate professor of social work, she served as a counselor at Barry for 12 years. She was named Barry’s associate vice president for Student Services in 1988. In that position Albert oversaw student services such as the campus health center, campus ministry and the student development center. In 1994, she was promoted to executive vice president at Barry, an institution also sponsored by the Adrian Dominicans.

Before coming to Siena Heights, Sister Peg guided the newly purchased Barry University School of Law in 2001. Serving as its chief administrator, Barry’s law school earned accreditation from the American Bar Association – at the time one of only two law institutions in the nation founded and headed by women to earn that distinction.

Meet the Athletic Director • Fred SmithFred Smith joined the Siena Heights coaching staff in 1977 as an assistant men’s basketball coach. He was named athletic director in 1983, and in 1984 was named head coach of the Saints men’s basketball program. As a coach, he led one of the winningest small-school programs in the country, recording five 30-win seasons, 12 appearances in the NAIA National Tournament and eight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference titles. His 1996-97 squad finished as the NAIA Division II national runner-up. In March 2006, he was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame. The Adrian native currently oversees a department that has 11 men’s and 12 women’s intercollegiate programs. Over the past four years, his leadership has been instrumental in the process of adding new sports such as football, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s bowling.
