PROFIBUS & PROFINET Internationalat theend of 2008 to define a manu facturer-independent profile with which energyconsumption in production can be easilyreduced during standby periods. Workbegan at the beginning of 2009 with theparticipation of 13 companies from theautomation industry, including Siemens, which was in at the start.

Redefining energy efficiencywith PROFIenergyThe PROFIenergy profile is basedon the Industrial Ethernet standardPROFINET and was officially releasedat the beginning of 2010. At HannoverFair 2010, Siemens was one of the firstmanufacturers to present products withPROFIenergy functionality. Siemens isnow working with well-known industrialcompanies to implement the new techno-logy in routine industrial applications.

Legal frameworks such as the Kyoto Pro-tocol, EU regulations, trading with emis-sion certificates, and the RenewableEnergy Sources Act are contributing fac-tors, but more than anything the risingcost of energy is forcing plant andmachine operators to act. They need tosignificantly reduce their energy costs not just for electricity but also, for exam-ple, for heating/cooling and compressedair. In addition, of course, they must comply with environmental protection regulations.

Rethinking for greater efficiencyThe new attitude in industry is alsotaking the form of voluntary commit-ments by companies. Automation offersthe potential for more energy-efficientproduction in this regard. The GermanElectrical and Electronic ManufacturersAssociation, for example, estimates thatthe use of modern automation in indus-

trial plants in Germany could save up to25 percent of the energy currently used.

As one of the leading technology compa-nies in the field of automation techno-logy, Siemens has already developed alarge number of solutions for transparentvisualization of energy consumption andfor improving energy efficiency in pro-duction.

Utilizing production standby periodsToday, although specific measures arebeing taken to reduce energy consump-tion in production operations, no atten-tion has been focused on breaks, eventhough this is an area with enormouspotential.

In order to harness this additional poten-tial, the Automation Initiative of GermanAutomobile Manufacturers called on the

Load prole (kWh, 15 min intervals)

Energy consump-tion during stand byperiods today: approx.60 percent of theenergy consumedduring production

Environmentally friendly mobility right from the start

Our cars will set new standards also in terms of climate protection.

In its production processes, Daimler AG is rigorously implementing

a philosophy of significantly reducing both energy consumption per

produced unit and the resulting carbon dioxide emissions. PROFIenergy

plays a part in achieving this goal.

Implementing solutionsBy now, Siemens, as one of the firstmanufacturers, has presented productsthat support PROFIenergy. This is a hugestep toward deploying PROFIenergy inplants also at Daimler.

The next series we will install will fea-ture PROFIenergy components. As ourcontroller supplier, Siemens will play acentral role in these projects. Since thePLC (programmable logic controller) isthe PROFIenergy controller as well, thePLC will ultimately form the core of theentire system. We will introduce the firstcomponents in the field and then gradu-ally expand the range, states Kbler. Hisdeclared goal is that every automationcomponent will have PROFIenergyinside in the future.

Identifying potentialEspecially in view of rising energy costs, the issue of energy efficiency in produc-tion is no longer just a matter of environ-mental protection but is becoming a basicquestion of competitiveness. In the future, companies will simply no longer be ableto afford to waste energy.

As one of the most innovative companiesin the automotive industry, Daimler AGhas already been working for some timeon optimizing and minimizing its powerconsumption. Some time ago, DaimlerAG carried out tests in the body shopto investigate the potential savings thatcould be achieved during productionbreaks. The expected results were con-firmed: energy consumption in breaksremains at a high level. The reason forthis is that until recently, expensiveadditional investments were requiredin the equipment in order to ensurethat it could be switched off.

Developing answersThe idea behind PROFIenergy then emer-ged as the solution to this problem. Wewere not willing to accept this situation, said Jrgen Kbler, manager of controlstechnology at Daimler in Sindelfingen,Germany. So we thought, What can wedo to integrate the standby functionalityinto the automation technology?

Toge ther with other car manufacturers,Daimler initiated a white paper withinthe framework of the fieldbus organiza-tion PROFIBUS & PROFINET International(PI) defining the key points of a suitableenergy-saving profile for productionautomation. An important aspect wasthat the profile should be simple andopen to enable the implementation ofboth cost-effective and manufacturer-neutral solutions. The result was thePROFIenergy profile for PROFINET, whichwas published by the PI at the beginningof 2010.

    With PROFIenergy, mechanical engineers

can easily design systems that save energy.Plant operators benefit from reduced energy

costs and an improved environmental impact

    assessment.

PROFIenergy is a PROFINET-based datainterface that allows individual devicesor entire subsections of a plant to beswitched off automatically in a highlyselective manner and without the aid ofexternal hardware. The power-down pro-cess is coordinated on a vendor-inde-pendent basis and is controlled centrally.Other automation components can conti-nue to operate during breaks, so safety-relevant sections of the plant remain inoperation.

With PROFIenergy, all functions necessaryto switch equipment off during down-times are incorporated directly in the con-trol components and can be addressed bya master controller via a standard proto-col. The special feature of PROFIenergy isthat the profile is universal.

Simple mechanismsAll the basic functions required for control-ling the devices are defined in PROFIenergy, including protocol processing, transportmechanisms, the control interface, andstatus functions, thereby ensuring thatPROFIenergy offers maximum opennessand fits into virtually any automation envi-ronment. PROFIenergy also enables low-cost and detailed recording of measuredvalues directly at the device. This providesa simple means of acquiring energy con-sumption data for components or units. These data can be used for power con-sumption optimization measures.

Simple implementationSiemens provides the user with functionmodules for PROFIenergy and implementsthe appropriate commands and status func-tions in the devices. Plant and mechanicalengineers and the plant operators continueto coordinate the switch-off and switch-onsequences and the activation signals for theprocess as before. PROFIenergy projects canbe implemented, for example, by setting upa system of break types short breaks, longbreaks, and unplanned breaks. Informationabout which components should be swit-ched off during which break types is storedin the controller.

With PROFIenergy, switch-off and switch-ontimes and minimum dwell times can easily beincorporated. This permits the definition of aminimum pause time required for switchingoff various devices.A robot cell application example is as follows:

1 The conveyor must have a two-minute lagand a two-minute lead time in relation tothe robot.

1 An appropriate switch-off and switch-onsequence can be defined for the individualsystems, as can a minimum pause time forthe entire unit.

1 Switch off of the entire cell is then per-formed centrally and automatically by thecontroller.

    The energy-saving stars:Products for PROFIenergy

At Hannover Fair 2010, Siemens presented the first products

with which PROFIenergy can be readily implemented

seamlessly integrated into Totally Integrated Automation,

    of course.

Energy-efficient production withPROFIenergy and SIMATIC ET 200SThe PROFIenergy-compatible PM-E ROpower module for the SIMATIC ET 200SHigh Feature and corresponding functionmodules allow easy implementation ofenergy-efficient solutions by means ofPROFIenergy.

The SIMATIC ET 200S PM-E RO powermodule is especially well suited for switch -ing off individual devices separately. It switches off individual inputs and out-puts selectively and disconnects loadsfrom the power supply.

PROFIenergy with SIMATIC S7controllers and I-DeviceThe PROFIenergy functionality can beeasily incorporated and processed inSTEP 7 programs via reloadable functionmodules. The PROFIenergy protocol issupported by the SIMATIC S7 controllers. In connection with the PROFINET I-Devicefunction that is available for the SIMATICS7-300 CPUs 315-2 PN/DP, 317-2 PN/DP,and 319-3 PN/DP, it is also possible to setentire system sections to energy-savingmode. Moreover, system sections can benetworked in this way and energy-savingfunctions coordinated across the board.

Controllers (e.g., the CPU 300 productfamily) can communicate as smartdevices with higher-order or centralcontrols by means of I-Device and canreceive energy-management tasks viaPROFINET command from the higher-order control. In a typical automationsolution with several networked con-

trols, PROFINET not only can communi-cate via I-Device to lower-level devicesin its capacity as I/O controller, but canact as an I/O device for I/O communica-tion with other higher-level or centralcontrols. This communication takesplace simultaneously on the same bus.

Your Siemens sales partner will provide you with the very latest informationabout all the products that support PROFIenergy.

Why should I use Siemensproducts with PROFIenergy? Siemens integrates the PROFIenergy functionality into Totally Integrated Automa-tion. Functional modules conceal the processing of the PROFIenergy protocol andenable straightforward programming and incorporation into the user program. Inthis way the user can easily take advantage of energy-saving functions within thestandard platform with robust, proven, and efficient systems.

In what applications andindustrial sectors can I usePROFIenergy?

PROFIenergy provides a means of reducing energy consumption during standbyperiods. As such, PROFIenergy is suitable for all industries with nonproductive times. This is the case, for example, in shift operation in the automotive industry or indemand-controlled conveyor systems in the logistics sector. PROFIenergy also formsthe basis for effective load management aimed at countering imminent load peakswith selective disconnection of particular loads.

    Is PROFIenergy complicatedto install?

PROFIenergy is an easily installed data interface that uses the existing servicesand mechanisms of the PROFINET international communications standard. Thisallows the master module of the ET 200S to be upgraded by means of a simplefirmware update for PROFIenergy. PROFIenergy can be easily reloaded into theapplication program via functional modules. Question Answer

Can I retrofit PROFIenergy? PROFIenergy can be readily integrated into existing machines and systems viaPROFINET. For example, the power module of the ET200S 3-PN HF simply needsto be exchanged for a PROFIenergy-compatible power module, while the corres-ponding firmware for the ET200S 3-PN HF is installed. Then all that is needed isto load the function modules into the SIMATIC CPU.

How much energy can I savewith PROFIenergy? The exact potential depends to a great degree on the specific application. However, measurements can demonstrate that there is considerable potential. Through thecoordinated shutdown of devices that are not needed, it is possible to reduceenergy requirements in long downtimes by up to 80 percent. Even in short standbyperiods, savings of up to 40 percent are possible.

What does PROFIenergy offerme as an end user?

You can realize unutilized energy savings potential, reduce your production costs, gain a competitive advantage, comply with statutory regulations and operational

environmental agreements, protect your investments, and save natural resources.

Im a mechanical engineer. Whatdo I gain from PROFIenergy?

You can easily integrate PROFIenergy into common product families, use existing PROFINET mechanisms, expand existing programs easily, and deliver machines enabling environmentally responsible and

    cost-effective production.
