You've done the flight, ridden in a tuk-tuk, moto or cab from the airport and crashed out in either your five star hotel suite or one of the multitude

of less expensive offerings around town Welcome to

Siem Reap

As we go to press in late December the weather is cool and dry, though

during the lifetime of this issue it will get progressively hotter, with

temperatures reaching 40C in April. Whatever the weather, why not take

refuge in one of Siem Reap’s many air-conditioned cafés and use our

guides to bring yourself up to date with what the town has to offer.

Here you will find temple town's most detailed listings of cafés,

restaurants, bars and clubs, plus reviews and articles on a wide

range of food and drink-related topics. We give you an overview

of what's on offer when you’re hungry or thirsty, we look at your

options when it comes to Cambodian cuisine, we give you some

pointers if you’re looking to chill out with a cappuccino,

watch an apsara dance show, and much more . . .

Be sure to pick up a copy of our sister publication Out & About,

for up to the minute information about the city’s shops, markets,

galleries, activities, spas, clinics, hotels and more.!

How to use this Guide

Siem Reap Drinking & Dining is divided into two main sections, one covering bars and cafés (drinking)

and the other covering restaurants (dining).

In each section we aim to provide a general overview of what the town has to offer to English-speaking visitors

and residents. We also look at Khmer cuisine, and at the nightlife scene here (in case you want to party till late).

And in each issue we profile four bars and four restaurants in our “At A Glance” features.

You will also find maps of the town on pages 44-49.

In each section we also include directory listings of relevant businesses, further divided into subcategories

where appropriate. Paid listings are indicated in red text. Please check the legend at the start of each listing

section for a list of symbols indicating opening times and so on. The listings also show a map reference

relating to the main town maps.

Be sure also to check our various feature pages for information about happy hours, choosing a restaurant by type (cuisine corner), Apsara dance shows and our culinary

glossary in case you want to practice your Khmer.

Enjoy your stay in Cambodia and please feel free to give us feedback –

Cambodia is a country that enjoys an abundance of public holidays with more than scheduled 25 annually.

During important religious holidays, which can run over several days, Siem Reap empties as Khmers head back to the provinces to spend time with their families and expats head to the coast or out of the country.

This often means the town operates on shut down mode, with the majority of shops, restaurants, bars, banks and other businesses closing. If you’re thinking of travelling during a public holiday, then pre-book accommodation and transport as buses fill quickly and private taxis are sparse and hike up their prices.

During the lifetime of this issue of Drinking & Dining, Cambodia will enjoy a series of public holidays that are worth noting in your calendar.

International New Year is one of the biggest holidays in the World and it's no different here in Cambodia (it's one of three New Years they celebrate!). The locals won't go to the provinces necessarily but many will have a day off work and be suffering a hang over from the night before. Most restaurants and bars will be open however.

Victory Over Genocide Day marks the day Vietnamese troops over-threw the Khmer Rouge. There will be remembrance services for victims, and foreigners are advised to show a little restraint if going out as a mark of respect towards those who died and those whose lifes are still affected today by the events of the past.

Meak Bochea Day is a religious holiday. It commemorates the ordainment of Buddha's original disciples on the same day over 2000 years ago. Many Khmers will go to pray and give offerings at local pagodas, as it is believed that on this day one can wash away all sins and cleanse ones mind. It will be business as usual for bars and restaurants however.

Khmer New Year is the big annual holiday in Cambodia, lasting three days officially, but many locals will also take the Monday and Friday off work. During this time you will find many locally owned bars and restaurants closed as people head back to their home provinces and villages to be with family. Those that do stay in Siem Reap however will generate a fun party atmosphere. Be warned ... in areas like Pub Street you may find yourself getting soaked with water, all in good fun, much as you would find in Thailand or Laos.

Thirsty Work

From draughts to daiquiris, Temple Town has got your tipple of choice covered.

Once the sun sets over Angkor Wat, the streets of Siem Reap come alive with the hustle and bustle of travellers wanting to wet their whistle at one of the town’s many watering holes.

It doesn’t take long to figure out how the tourist hub of Pub Street got it’s name. Stroll up and down the street after dark and you’ll be beckoned to imbibe and enjoy happy hours which seem almost too good to be true. While Pub Street offers a dizzying array of choices, there are plenty of other options waiting to be discovered. King’s Road Angkor is the perfect place to begin a sophisticated evening in tranquil surroundings. Indulge in a cocktail or two before dining at one of their world-class restaurants. Share a glass of fine wine at Embassy’s swanky downstairs lounge before heading upstairs for an unforgettable meal. Musos will find themselves at home at Cambodia’s one and only Hard Rock Cafe. Alongside their world-famous food, you’ll find an extensive selection of drinks to suit all tastes.

If you consider yourself more jazz than rock and roll, The Jazz Boat will be right up your alley. Located just a short stroll from Sok San Road, this classy new establishment is dedicated to bringing the art of live jazz and world music to Siem Reap. Enjoy the soothing sounds of both local and international musicians while nursing an ice-cold beer or aromatic wine. If you start to get peckish, The Jazz Boat’s impressive tapas menu - boasting a marvellous selection of international options - will be music to your

ears. Heritage Suites host a jazz evening every Thursday from 6:30pm - the ideal accompaniment to their daily $3 drink specials.

Exhausted explorers can revive themselves with a tipple or two whilst sinking into one of Nest Angkor’s comfy loungers. Wine lovers won’t be disappointed either as their wine list includes drops from Australia, France, New Zealand and South America.

The alleys and laneways of the Old Market Area are home to many a hidden gem. Sample a cocktail with a unique, Khmer twist at Asana Old Wooden House. This secluded spot, with it’s chilled out vibe, is a great choice for those hoping to escape the crowds. Cocktail connoisseurs who want to put their shaking skills to the test will find Asana’s cocktail classes a memorable way to spend an evening.

Wander up The Lane and you’ll discover a longtime favourite with expats and travellers alike, Miss Wong - Siem Reap’s very own elegant slice of 1940s Shanghai. These masters of mixology shake up an irresistible assortment of cocktails infused with local flavours - the Lemongrass Collins is a must-try. Their beer selection is equally impressive, and your rumbling stomach won’t be able to say no to their bite-sized dim sum.

Nearby you’ll find another nostalgic haunt, aptly named The Yellow Sub. Beatles devotees will delight in the quirky memorabilia adorning the walls, and those with a competitive streak can battle it out on the ping pong table upstairs while downing a beer or two (or three). Happy hour kicks off each night at 6:00pm, with half-price drinks and a selection of tapas to nibble on.

Pop around the corner to Charlie’s Bar - find out more on page 40 - and quench your thirst with their daily drinks specials. When their tequila Tuesday gets the better of you, their Eggs Benedict with a twist (it’s served on a waffle!) is the perfect fix the morning after.

If you’d rather be watching sport than working up a sweat pounding the pavement, Irina Sports Bar have got you sorted. As well as screening all the big games, this newcomer has a variety of gaming paraphernalia to keep all their patrons happy. You can read more about Irina Sports Bar on page 41.

With gallons of inexpensive beer readily available on tap, Pub Street and its surrounds quickly turns into a backpacker’s heaven once the lights go out. Angkor What? and Temple Bar are solid picks for partying the night away. Both are located on Pub Street and are hard to miss. Dust off your dancing shoes and head to popular backpacker’s destination, Sok San Road, and get up to some mischief

at X Bar - home to Siem Reap’s only rooftop half-pipe. DJs pump out all the bangers into the small hours of the morning. Island Bar, located within the Night Market, draws a backpacker crowd minus the rowdiness. The beautiful open-air bar is a great spot to gather your thoughts after exploring all the marvellous trinkets the night market has to offer.

Party-goers looking for a gay-friendly establishment to party the night away won’t have to search far and wide. Tucked away in the Old Market Area on The Passage, is Linga Bar - which just celebrated its 10th anniversary and recently underwent a serious revamp. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample one or two of their legendary cocktails; rumour has it that they’re some of the best the town has to offer. Just around the corner, on Street 7, you’ll find The Station - another colourful favourite. Hilarity is sure to ensue as ladyboys, singers and comedians take centre stage in The Station Review most evenings - Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 10:00pm.

Siem Reap by night isn’t all thumping tunes; those wanting to catch their breath after an action-packed day will find plenty of classy and cosy haunts to ease into the evening. Picasso Bar is a refreshing find that’s hidden away on Alley West. This hip little spot draws an eclectic crowd with their two-for-one cocktails during happy hour. People-watching enthusiasts should head to The Sun to sip on a beverage while watching the crowds swarm by. Those looking for something of the non-alcoholic variety can enjoy a fruit shake or a caffeine hit. Middle Eastern-inspired Mezze offers up a similar vibe with opulent surroundings to sink into. Kick back and unwind in their lavish atmosphere with a cool cocktail in hand; the passionfruit mojito comes highly recommended.

A night out on the town wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Angelina Jolie’s former hangout, The Red Piano. Sample the Tomb Raider cocktail, that the Hollywood star inspired while in Siem Reap to shoot the film of the same name. They’re also famous for their drool-worthy breakfast menu which is guaranteed to take the edge off any serious hangover.

Solitude-seekers can make their way out of the Old Market to revel in the peace and quiet at Sky River. Those who overslept and missed the sunrise, can make up for it by watching the sunset from this breezy rooftop bar and restaurant. Things pick up pace later in the evening as Sky River transforms into a live music venue. FCC Angkor, which can be found just a little out of the main tourist hive, takes pride in creating seriously special cocktails. Those looking to crack a bottle of imported beer or wine will be well pleased with FCC Angkor’s offerings from France, Italy, New Zealand and South Africa.

Party goers shouldn’t be put off by Siem Reap’s size because its nightlife definitely doesn’t match, with the

party going on well into the early hours.

Despite the frequent sound of monks chanting at the healthful hour of five, Reapers tend to party until well past fish porridge-o’-clock (e.g. breakfast-time), and have plenty of excellent places to do so.

Of course, that’s not to say that you have to stay out late dancing, drinking, and talking to have a great time, but maybe after just one more you can rest up for that temple visit you keep putting off!

Head over to Hard Rock Café at King's Road Angkor and get ready to be transported to the world of rock n' roll with their live bands playing out a range of greatest hits in surroundings decked out in some really cool music memorabilia.

Across the river on the rooftop of the Angkor Trade Center, is Sky River. Set over two open air levels, the upper area is VIP with fine dining restaurant and extensive wine selection, the lower area a lounge bar with dance floor and stage hosting live music and DJs. With 1200 sq meter of party space it’s a must visit on a night out.

Laundry Bar on Psar Chas, with its smooth, upscale seventies-style décor, is the quintessential hip French hangout, where one can sip on a happy hour-priced caramel liqueur and vodka while gyrating to live gypsy jazz and twirling on the dance floor or play pool in the back room with a stylish assortment of bohemians.

If being this cool is wearing you out, duck next door and make an ass of yourself singing karaoke or performing at the Friday open mic at local favorite

The Warehouse, which offers cheap drinks, pub food, live music, foosball, and an unpretentious bar environment.

Does the phrase “bucket of whiskey” whet your appetite for debauchery? Dive into the drunken throng at Angkor What?, Siem Reap’s original late-night destination for the wild and carefree. Even those who don’t usually dance on tables may find themselves elevated by the end of the night, numbed by the blaring pop and flashing lights.

Should you feel like making a full circuit, you may find yourself in the middle of a circle of youthful Khmers in Temple Bar, doing the New Orleans-style Bounce to outrageously loud music. Try to stop in before the Happy Hour ends at 10pm.

Inside the Sokha Angkor Resort, Royal Titanic Nightclub is an establishment catering to sophisticated tastes. A comprehensive drinks menu, ample dance space, and an array of secluded booths ensures it has all the ingredients for a memorable night out.

All dressed up and still want to show off your sparkles? Don’t forget to visit Linga Bar, which is gay-owned but attracts a mixed, cosmopolitan crowd for a hedonistic night out dancing and sipping cocktails with travellers, expats and locals. Try the Apple Martini !

The most diverse array of music is to be found at X Bar, where almost every quality DJ and band in town plays, representing all the genres SR has to offer. Additionally, there are often visiting international acts. Weekly events keep the party going and Wednesday is open-mic night. Don’t miss the in-house band every Friday. The party is usually just blowing up at 2 or 3am and promises to go on until the birds chirp and the sun rises over the rooftop half-pipe.

Charlie’s Bar is another firm favourite on the expat scene, quickly establishing itself as a laid-back late-night haunt worthy of staying at until way after dark.

Mezze, in the Old Market area near the Red Piano, is well worth seeking out. Sumptuously decorated with soft lights and furniture, this bar is straight up sexy.

The Jazz Boat new arrival to Cambodia’s cosmopolitan bar scene. Enjoy the soulful sounds of both local and international musicians, performing an eclectic array of jazz and world music.

If an attack of the late night munchies strikes, Le Tigre de Papier is the de rigeur late-night pizza place (in fact it's open 24 hours), where you can order up an affordable gourmet pie.

Jazz Boat HARBOUR STREET This new arrival to Cambodia’s cosmopolitan

bar scene is jazzing up Siem Reap in a big way. With experience

running jazz bars across France and Vietnam, The Jazz Boat’s

owner, Jeanne, knows what she’s doing. The atmosphere in

the nautical-themed bar is relaxed and authentic, with live music played on an

intimate stage most evenings. Enjoy the soulful sounds of both local and international musicians,

performing an eclectic array of jazz and world music. A short stroll from Sok San Road, The Jazz Boat is a creative hub for Siem Reap’s bohemian types. With a Western-standard tattoo studio downstairs, along with a dedicated graphic design studio, this place is a Mecca for weary travellers seeking inspiration. Do yourself a favour and unwind with some sweet sounds, great company, and delicious tapas at The Jazz Boat.

Irina Sport Bar near wat polanka Rolling up in a new city with half an hour to spare before the big match can be panic-inducing for any sports fan. Fret not, we’ll point you in the right direction. The aptly named Sports Bar does exactly what it says on the tin. This is the place for all the big games, from football, to rugby, to UFC, all displayed on five flat-screen tellys, including a 60-inch screen in pride of place. Sports Bar also has PS3 and XBOX consoles for their highly entertain-ing FIFA tournaments, a foosball table, and that classic sports bar staple: darts. The relaxed atmo-sphere makes this a great place to hang out, even when there’s not a game on, and the two-for-one cocktails during their 5:00 till 7:00pm happy hour never go amiss.

Royal Titanic Club SIVATHA STREET Located inside the lavish Sokha Angkor Resort, the Royal Titanic

Nightclub is an establishment catering to sophisticated tastes. As you descend the

curving staircase, replete with heavy wooden balustrade, you’d be

forgiven for thinking you might find Leo and Kate on the

mezzanine floor. However, once you enter the darkened interior,

complete with club music, flashing lights, and a colossal bar forming an island

in the centre of the room, you realise this is not DiCaprio’s Titanic. For starters, a night spent here

is not destined to sink. With a comprehensive drinks menu, ample dance space, and an array of secluded booths for those who

need a breather, the Royal Titanic Nightclub has all the ingredients for a memorable night on the town. Be sure to check out their Facebook page for upcoming events.

Khmer Dining ) Michelle Manning

DelicateDishes

Cambodian cooking is all too often overshadowed by the signature dishes of neighbouring Thailand and Vietnam.

Cambodian cooking boasts a fusion of strong and vibrant flavours and is much milder than its neighbours, ensuring each dish contains the perfect blend of salty, sour, sweet and bitter. Many of the dishes draw inspiration from China and India, with the Chinese leaving the legacy of stir-frying and the Indians introducing dried spices such as star anise, cinnamon, nutmeg and fennel.

Cambodia has a rich network of rivers and the ocean in the south, offering a plentiful supply of fish, making it a popular addition to the plates of Khmers. Prahok, a fermented fish paste, is another paste that gives Cambodian cuisine its unique flavour.

You may have also seen from the many street vendors, that Khmer cuisine includes a variety of bugs to eat and as you’ll discover at Bugs Café. Siem Reap’s first and only specialists in insect based cuisine, proves they can be delicious. This is real restaurant cuisine where creativity, where presentation and quality is key, and here you’ll enjoy crickets, scorpions, spiders, silk worms, along with a fun experience for all.

No visit to Cambodia would be complete without tasting the traditional fish amok – steamed and curried fish that is coated in kroeung paste and cooked in a cup made from banana leaves. Beef lok lak is another signature dish made with diced beef garnished with citrus and pepper dip.

One restaurant that sets out to truly reflect the ethics of Cambodian cooking is Cuisine Wat Damnak, which offers a choice of two set menus ($19 and $27) that will make your taste buds dance for joy.

For the budget conscious, try Sugar Palm. Set in a traditional Cambodian wooden house, their menu covers all the classics, from amok to satays and stir-fries Square 24 has already made a name for itself with a short menu offering mouth-watering stir-fries, and covering all the ‘inescapable’ classics in fine style. Alternatively, also in the Wat Bo area, Viroth’s is one of the longest established Khmer midmarket dining establishments and offering well-prepared dishes in a stylish, modern setting.

Cambodian food is mostly about using fresh vegetables and herbs, and expensive meat and fish are added sparingly, making it perfect to adapt for vegetarians. Chamkar on The Passage and its newer branch on Airport Road do an excellent turn of veggie dishes. Champey serves up the classics in a beautifully designed restaurant that evokes a gentle old world charm. Angkor Palm serves its signature Khmer combo platter with 7 dishes, using organic products.

If you prefer dining Kmher-style in a fantastic wooden house with great outdoor terrace seating, then check out Wok Republik on King's Road Angkor. The latter serves Khmer specialties fromt he wok, which makes your favourite dishes extra decadent. On Pub Street, you’ll also find Cambodian BBQ for a little DIY dining. A special metal and charcoal contraption lets you cook your meat while keeping the soup hot.

The unique Madame Butterfly is set in a colourful wooden house, with lots of outdoor seating space, but indoor AC available also. With fine design, great food, but more importantly it's a training restaurant working with street children.

Chanrey Tree boasts fine dining in super-chic style, serving up traditional Khmer food with a modern twist. For those with a sweet tooth, Kaya Café offers five, freshly-made traditional Khmer desserts, which change.

L'Auberge des Temples is the perfect place for more discerning gourmet in the form of fine, high-quality Khmer cuisine served in a super sophisticated setting so get the glad rags out.

Anyone looking for a fun, informative eating experience should check out the Cambodia Vespa Adventures’ After Dark Foodie Tour, which will guide you through the hustle and bustle of street vendors, foods, aromas and sounds, with points of local interest highlighted along the way while you ride your own Vespa. The tour price includes all food and drinks, and it's suitable for vegetarians also.

Despite being a fairly small town, when it comes to dining Siem Reap packs a palatable punch.

Fine-dining enthusiasts will find themselves in culinary heaven as Cambodia’s cultural Mecca boasts some of the most exquisite cuisine the region has to offer. Take a stroll through the village and you’ll soon discover 15 first-class restaurants and cafes, as well as eight boutiques. The newest addition to the family, Embassy, is a sophisticated affair - perfect for an intimate lunch or dinner. Regulars to Siem Reap will delight as their seasonal six-course menu is revamped each month, providing connoisseurs with a real treat for their taste buds. Neighbouring establishment, Chez M Paul, exudes an unmistakably French ambience with its deco-inspired decor. You’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in Paris as you dine on escargot and duck confit. Satisfy your sweet tooth by sampling some of Angkor Macaron's mouth-watering masterpieces. The classic French creation has been reinvented with irresistible, locally inspired flavours including dragon fruit, longan and jackfruit.

Venture outside of King’s Road Angkor and you’ll find a plethora of French cuisine waiting for you to devour. The team at elegant Le Malraux take pride in serving up divine French and Asian-inspired dishes. The cosy atmosphere provides the ideal setting for a romantic evening away from the crowds. If you’re looking for homestyle French dining, Barrio is the place for you. Pick from an array of traditional dishes including Breton galette and crème brûlée. enjoy a meal in L’Annexe’s lush garden setting. The tranquil surroundings will rejuvenate weary souls and their immaculately presented dishes are sure to satisfy your belly.

Francophiles will discover more culinary pleasures at both Abacus and Le Bistrot de Siem Reap. Located just off Road 6, Abacus is another great spot to revive mind, belly and soul with its peaceful atmosphere. The chalkboard menu is overhauled each week with delectable French-inspired fare. Le Bistrot de Siem Reap, located within Victoria Angkor Hotel, serves up outstanding French gastronomy which is complemented by a fine wine selection.

You’ll find your fix of both sweet and savoury crêpes hidden on The Lane at La Creperie Bretonne, where owner Philippe ensures each crêpe is cooked to perfection. Another dining star tucked away within the alleyways of the Old Market area is the charming Italian eatery, Il Forno - a favourite with both expats and tourists. Cambodia’s very own slice of Italy will transport you to the streets of Rome as you feast upon authentic Italian cuisine, including homemade gnocchi, ravioli and pizza.

If you’re hankering for Indian cuisine, Siem Reap’s not short on scrumptious options. Dakshin’s, located just off The Lane, use traditional Indian ingredients to create their aromatic, flavour-packed curries. Those who are feeling exceptionally peckish should head to The Indian to feast on one of their generous thalis. Maharajah, on Sivutha, and sister restaurant Taj Mahal, on Sok San Road, serve up delish dishes to suit all budgets.

Nip upstairs to Mezze Bar, which you’ll find nestled on Street 11, and munch on some Lebanese delights while unwinding in their hip, Middle Eastern-inspired surroundings. Pick from a selection of tasty Lebanese-style tapas or fill yourself up on an appetising shawarma.

The outskirts of Siem Reap’s Old Market area are home to some remarkable restaurants that are not to be missed. The culinary superstars at newcomer Olive, located on Street 9, specialise in whipping up the finest French and Mediterranean fare. Olive’s sleek, modern interior complements their beautifully plated creations. The seabass risotto and the tagine-style lamb shank are simply heavenly.

Experience open-air dining Siem Reap style at Sky River - a new rooftop venue serving up fabulous French and Khmer cuisine, thirst-quenching beers and cocktails, and live music. Their chef uses the freshest local ingredients, so you won’t be disappointed.

chef, Somontha Oeng, is dedicated to adding new zest to traditional street food. Each dish is created using only the freshest locally sourced ingredients, and there’s plenty to please both meat lovers and vegetarians. Make sure you try the butter catfish curry with grilled pork rib, eggplant, long beans, pumpkin and toasted rice, and the lotus root salad with lotus stamp, lotus flower, soy dressing and basil.

Away from the madness of Pub Street, won’t lead you astray either. Head up from the river and along Hup Guan Street and you’ll stumble upon a number of hip boutiques and eateries. This stylish corner of town, known as Kandal Village, will allow you to catch you breath and bask in Siem Reap’s relaxed side. Alongside an eclectic assortment of galleries, spas and unique clothing stores, are some tantalising restaurants and cafes. Armand’s Bistro, a Phnom Penh dining institution for those in the know, has found its second home in Kandal Village and is already making waves on the fine dining scene. Here you’ll find soothing jazz, a fabulous wine selection and, of course, a dazzling array of edible delights. Try their famous tenderloin rossini - you’ll be raving about it for months to come.

If it’s a pickup of the caffeine variety you’re after, Kandal Village’s collection of cool cafes will see you set. Curb your caffeine craving at The Little Red Fox Espresso when you sample one of their fresh brews. Wander down the road and you’ll come across Common Grounds Cafe - an NGO cafe serving up delicious food, desserts, coffees and smoothies.

Siem Reap’s packed full of fabulous eateries that are committed to improving the lives of disadvantaged youths and raising money for NGOs. Sala Baï, a hospitality training school, offers a superb selection of both Western and Khmer set menus. Haven, located on Sok San Road, serves up all the Khmer classics as well as juicy burgers and sandwiches. Their vegetarian selection is particularly impressive. Back in the Old Market Area is Joe to Go - a quaint little spot to grab brekkie, lunch or dinner. All profits go to The Global Child. Further out of town, but well worth the trip, Marum - another training restaurant - dishes up a number of Khmer-inspired tapas.

A one-of-a-kind way to experience Khmer cuisine is by spending an evening with Cambodia Vespa Adventures on their After Dark Foodie Tour. Hop on a scooter, with your personal driver, and dine like the locals while discovering some of Siem Reap’s best kept secrets.

End a day of temple exploring on a high note by paying Crystal Angkor Restaurant a well-deserved visit. Although it’s a bit of a trek from the centre of town, this exquisite dining spot offers a unique and memorable experience with traditional Apsara and shadow puppet shows. Find out more on page 54.
