First step: water attacks the chemical bonds in the amorphous phase and it reduces the polymer chains into

small fragments� molecular weight drops down

Second step: enzymes / microorganisms metabolize these fragments� polymer mass is lowering

The decomposition by-products are incorporated into the cellular physiological processes and they’re finally
