FROM THE PRINCIPAL No. 31 20th September, 2012 Dear Parents and Caregivers It was a wonderful day on Sunday as we came together to celebrate the 50 th Jubilee of Queen of Apostles commencing in 1962. The number of people who came to share time together and experience the community at the school was astounding. Some of the highlights for me were the opening of the time capsule and seeing so many students from 1987 return to Q of A to see what was inside the capsule, the children’s performances and the buzz in the memorabilia rooms as people shared their memories and caught up with friends. The day was all about providing an opportunity for our school community to celebrate the jubilee and for the parents, children and staff who had been associated with the school the opportunity to return and celebrate our significant milestone. I think we can say that we achieved this on the day. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the following people for their time and commitment to preparing and running this event. The steering committee consisting of Lidia Ranalli, Christine Kent, Sr Josita, Chantal Tunney, Agnese Terribile, Ninetta Howie, Kim – Maree Jones, Deslee Till, Cathy McGraw, Marg Poncini, Deanne Johnson, Juliann King, Mandy Grace, David Foster and Ailsa Whiting. A special thank you to Lidia and Christine who took on the leadership role for the day to ensure everything was in order. All of the parents who volunteered their time to assist on a stall. The teachers who worked with the children to entertain us with their performances. A special thank you to Melissa Spiteri and Lisa Allely (Music Specialist) for all their effort in having the choir, strings and band perform on the day. Mr Jason Spiteri for all of his time and effort in organising and setting up all of the sound equipment for the performances. Sam and Susie Pagano for their kind donation of the fresh food items used on the day. All of our sponsors who so generously supported the school with their donations: Terry White Chemist at

Lutwyche Shopping Village, Coles, Montash Jewellery Design, All Mobile Apparel, Quality Food Services, Clovely Estate, Queenie’s Traditional Tea House, Electrolux, FWD Sports productions, Platypus Graphics, Officeworks, TMH, Terrace House Hair Studio, Jephson Hotel, Intimo, Teresa Rotolone Hairdressing, Café Urbano, Dairy Farmers, QRC, Travelscene at Kenmore, Imago Photography. Please support them wherever possible.

We are still finalising all of the expenses for the day and hope to be able to provide a figure of what was raised through the event by the first week back after the holidays. Thank you to everyone for your financial support and generous donation of items over the last few months. The money raised through the event will be used to provide for the educational needs of the children. Free Dress Day: We will be holding a free dress day on Friday and the children will be permitted to wear casual clothes on the day. I would ask you to please ensure that your child wears clothes suitable for the activities they will be involved in during the day and provide adequate protection from the sun. Year Seven Canberra Trip: Our Year Seven children head off for their week away in Sydney and Canberra in the first week of next term. It will be a busy week for the children and their teachers as they visit many exhibitions and places of government during the week. We wish them a most enjoyable and safe time away from school and family. Pick Up Zone in Thuruna Street: The pick-up zone in Thuruna Street will no longer be available after the school holidays. The drop off in the morning will still occur. The purpose of establishing a new pick up zone was to provide for the safety of the children and parents. The practice of queuing along Appleby Road was not safe and we were fortunate there were no serious accidents. We are committed to providing supervision at the pick up zone each day and need your support in using the pick-up zone. Parents are welcome to park in Thuruna Street in the afternoon and walk in to pick up their child. Every effort will be made to change the signs in Thuruna Street to reflect this change in pick up procedures. Congratulations: Congratulations to Megan and Darren Armstrong on the birth of their beautiful baby boy born on 10th September. A baby brother for Lachlan (Year 4F), Brayden (Year 2C) and Abby (Prep C). An invitation to the wedding ceremony at Our Lady, Queen of Apostles Church of Stephanie Redshaw and Dan Hodge on Saturday 29 September has been included in the newsletter. Once again, we wish Steph and Dan, Callie and Daveinder much happiness and joy as they celebrate their love and commitment to each other at their respective weddings during the September holidays. I hope that you and your family have a wonderful holiday and the opportunity to enjoy some time together over the break. I look forward to seeing everyone again on Monday 8th October. Yours sincerely Peter Stower

ACTIVE SCHOOL TRAVEL NEWS Thank you for your efforts this term in helping us travel actively and win the Golden Boot Award again! THINKING SKILLS and BELONGING RULES This week we have finished our term with the Value Self, Others and the Environment rule - Be responsible and Speak to please. Using our Green Hat thinking we considered the question “What could you do differently to show others that you are responsible?” It has been wonderful to watch the student’s growth in being able to use the six thinking hats to enhance their understanding of our belonging rules. Q of A BIRTHDAY PARTY Our recent 50th Birthday party was a wonderful and enjoyable day. Thank you to everyone who assisted in making it such a success. A big thank you to the students and staff for their efforts in preparing such entertaining items. The items were fantastic and I was very proud of everyone. It was also wonderful to hear performances from our school choir, concert band and string ensemble. We hope that you enjoyed the launch of our new school song and look forward to hearing it again very soon. NAPLAN Yesterday our Year 3, 5 and 7 students received their NAPLAN results. FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION I want to write a little bit about the 50th Jubilee celebrations that we had on Sunday. I have been involved in many school ‘fetes’ and other celebrations in my 33 years in Catholic Education but I can honestly say that last Sunday was one of the most organised and enjoyable events I have been to. With such a large and willing band of helpers, all the preparations and cleaning up activities were not such a big chore. It is true to say that we put on events like this for the fundraising benefits and for the fun that the children gain from it, but it is also true that we build community through such days. I like to hear people’s stories and where they have come from; one man told me the name of the village in Holland where his great grandfather came from. It was the same village I visited in 1978 because my grandfather lived there. I also spoke to a lady whose family background was rich and diverse; containing relatives from a region in Italy called Abruzzi where my wife’s family comes from and where we visited in 1988. Days like Sunday go towards making Queen of Apostles the great school and community that it is. Thank you to all those parents who put so much hard work into the day to make it such a great success. Your efforts are very much appreciated. May I remind you of the Paul’s Collect a Cap. Every milk bottle lid with 10 cents written on it brings us the equivalent amount in real money! Something for nothing. There is a collection box in the office at each campus.

This week 5F will the sharing in the Eucharist at mass with parishioners on Friday. This is a great opportunity for the children to get to know some of the parishioners who attend mass daily – a great example of faith in action. Have a great two weeks – I hope it is a real opportunity for your family to do something together. Children grow up so quickly so don’t miss the special times with them while they are young. にんじゃ 忍者 Ninja – Professional Spy of Medieval Japan Over the last few weeks the upper grades have been learning about Japanese

secret agents, Ninjas. Ninjas can climb an enemy’s castle wall like a spider, jump

from a cliff like a feather, run like a deer and disguise themselves like a

chameleon.

Ninjas were trained from an early age to move quietly. Ninja training included

instruction in Buddhism, Chinese philosophy, meditation, herbal medicine,

psychology, astronomy, magic, pharmacology, disguise, walking on water and

fortunetelling.

During the 15th and 17th centuries Ninja became very active, but by the end of

19th century Ninja had waned and had become a topic of imagination and mystery.

We had a great time in learning about Japanese secret agents and we are going

to learn more about Japanese culture next term.
