Have you ever used these excuses for your
procrastination habit?
▪ You claim to have lots and lots of work so you make the excuse that’s it’s only natural to have some things wait on the back burner and thus those things end up being done at the last minute.
▪ You love the energy of the last minute working schedule, this is where you are driven almost entirely by rush of a looming deadline.
▪ You want to look as if you are busy to others, when all that you have really done is to wait until the last minute instead of doing things little by little throughout your deadline.
You usually meet your deadline, but it’s usually with stress and relief
Don’t fret…
A lot of people are guilty
of waiting until the last
minute to do something
important. So what can
you do to combat this bad?
#1: Learn why you procrastinate
Is it an avoidance issue? Is the task boring? Is the task difficult? Are you not sure where to start? Is this a subconscious defiant mechanism?
Is it a combination of several things and/or does the reasoning they vary from task to task?
When is your procrastination most troublesome? These are the kinds of questions you need to answer to better come up with solutions tailor for your success in combating this habit.
#2: Focus on one task at hand
You need to decide if the task you’ve been procrastinating on a want to do, need to do or should do and by whom is this task defined?
#3: Define the Consequences and Desires
You need to be very clear and specific in the consequences you face.
You also need to be clear and specific about the outcome you desire and weigh the two.
#4: Carrot or the Stick
Using incentives aren’t as bad as we used to think.
Try a bribe, but one that is meaningful to you or find creative ways to punish yourself.
Examples could include: cleaning your house or apartment, not going out for drinks with friends, or limiting your weekly spending on your favorite foods or treats.
#5: Get Encouragement
Get advice from trusted resources like books and productivity courses.
There are lots of resources available in book form, and counseling, even support groups may be necessary if you find that your procrastination problem is more difficult than first thought.
