    SIAL China 2007 is a sell-out 8th edition of SIAL China, May 10-12, 2007

    China’s food and beverage trade show SIAL China 2007 closed on May 12th, 2007 at SNIEC. SIAL China 2007, which has completed its 8th edition this year, has proved again to grow with double-digit numbers regarding the exhibiting surface and the number of participating exhibitors. Once again, the show was more active, more practical and more international: held from May 10 to 12 in Shanghai, the fair hosted 22,253 visitors with 15% foreigners among them. Together, SIAL China and Packtech-Foodtech presented the entire value chain for the food and beverage industry, from ingredients and ready-to-sale products to packaging and processing. The conference program was an additional attraction that saw buyers and sellers attending in great numbers, keen to learn from leading authorities such as consulting companies, media specialists, importers and retailers. SIAL China sincerely thanks all partners and participants for their generous support which contributed decisively to the success of the show. Country of honor Honoring the year of Spain in China and appreciating its rich culinary tradition, the Iberian country has been selected as country of honor at SIAL China 2007. Exposium and the exhibition esteemed the presence of three high government officials for the inauguration of this 8th edition:

    Pavilions & Key Accounts The top 6 of foreign national pavilions regarding their exhibiting space were: France, Spain, Italy, USA, South Africa and Mexico, with an incredible 94%-increase for Spain. SIAL China counted the participation of 11 internationally renowned key accounts and of 8 Chinese leaders in the dairy industry at the 2007 edition: Andros, Brown Forman (Fetzer Wines), Budweiser, Carrefour, Diageo, Les Grands Chais de France (LGCF), Madrange, Metro, Nordmilch, Torres, United Spirits, Mengniu, Yili, Bright Dairy and Food, YinQiao group, Yayo, Yashili Group, Panda Dairy Products and Flying Crane Dairy. This year’s event also compromised all of China with exhibitors coming from 29 of the 31 Chinese provinces on the mainland. For the very first time, Tibet Autonomous Region took part in SIAL China. Exposium is satisfied with a 40%-increase of the exhibiting surface and the number of exhibitors in the national area. Regional Pavilions Six Chinese provinces attended SIAL China with an individual pavilion: Shandong, Zhejiang, the city of Zhengzhou (Henan), Ningxia, Yunnan and and the city of Beijing. The pavilion of Shandong province –a region well-known for its agricultural products abroad– listed 60 direct exhibitors on 600sqm and presented the region’s specialties such as seafood, peanuts, garlic, fruit and vegetables etc. Ningxia province came for the first time with a pavilion to SIAL China so as to present a large selection of prepared products based on wolfberry, highly appreciated by the Asian consumers. Special Zones This year, SIAL China presented for the first time five special zones: Wines & Spirits, Sweets and Snack Food, Dairy Products, Tea & Coffee and Canned Food. Focus on Wine With more than 15% of the exhibitors in the Wine & Spirits business, SIAL China registered a 5%-increase in the number of exhibitors, reaching a total of 123 participants from 16 countries, mainly from France, Spain, Italy, the USA, Germany and Chili. Besides the international participants, 52 Chinese Wine & Spirits exhibitors showcased their products in the national section of SIAL China, representing a 150%-increase compared to 2006. Numerous key accounts from this product-category came to SIAL China 2007: Ackermann Rémy Pannier, Val d’Orbieu, Les Grands Chais de France, Pannon Tokay Vineyard, United Spirits, Diageo, Brown Forman (Fetzer Wines) and Les Vignerons de Carthage.

    Exhibitors The Asian market represented in average 24% of the exhibitors’ export-turnover while the Chinese market stood for 19% of their export-turnover and they expect a 117%-growth in the next five years. 84% of the participating exhibitors aimed to find new commercial contacts in China, while the second most important objective was to find distributors and agents (60%), followed by the goal of developing and enhancing existing contacts (37%) and finding new commercial contact in Asia, outside of China (19%). Exposium is proud to register a continuous growth in the exhibitors’ satisfaction: 88% of the international exhibitors and 73% of the national exhibitors declared to be very satisfied with this year’s organization compared to 84% in 2006. 61% of the exhibitors announced already their intention to participate in 2008 versus 53% in 2006.

    Visitors SIAL China has welcomed 22 253 visitors from 87 countries with 15% international visitors (3 338 persons) and an 8%-increase compared to last year. With 47% of the international visitors, Asia was by far the best represented continent. Among the Chinese visitors, 61% came from Shanghai. The other best represented Chinese-speaking regions were the cities of Beijing, Hangzhou and Suzhou as well as the region of Guangdong for continental China but also Hong Kong and Taiwan. Chinese visitors came from all 32 provinces of the country.

    Partners With long-term partners like Carrefour, Metro and Lianhua, SIAL China presented the largest national and international wholesalers and distributors of the country. For the first time SIAL China organized buyers’ meetings with Gourmedis, an importer specializing in gourmet food. Thanks to 376 Buyers’ Meetings numerous products of SIAL China exhibitors will find their way to the Chinese consumer and make the product range of the super- and hypermarkets more varied. Events In tandem with the ever growing show went a series of events which encompassed conferences and seminars led by market experts and professionals as well as culinary demonstrations and competitions.

    China Wine & Spirits Competition, 8th edition The China Wine & Spirits Competition entered its 8th year and belongs today to the standard events of the show with a wide-spread reputation. Giving participants the opportunity to boost their communications towards wine and spirits trade professionals in Asia, the competition attracted again wine producers of all calibers. 300 competing samples, tasted by 18 esteemed professional judges with one third of them being Chinese professionals. 109 medals (29 gold medals and 80 silver medals) were awarded to winemakers from 16 countries to close the judging phase of the event. The most coveted honor, the golden medal was respectively given to following exhibiting participants:

    For the first time, Chinese rice wine -also called yellow wine- was tested and five competitors were rewarded with a golden medal.

    OlivAsia, 3 rdedition For the third time, OlivAsia –the unique olive oil competition in Asia– ran shortly before the show and gathered a panel of independent olive oil experts and a jury of Food and Beverage Managers. Similarly to the China Wine & Spirits Competition, winners were announced after the Opening Ceremony and benefited from a high exposure to the professional press and key decision-makers. 80 samples entered the competition from 12 countries, representing a 14%-increase regarding the number of samples.     Culinary demonstrations on the Spanish pavilion Four-star chefs of Spanish high-cuisine presented the best of the Spanish cuisine at SIAL China 2007. Creation, innovation and new concept cuisine are the key elements at the Spanish dining table. The participating chefs are:

    Dani García - declared Best Chef in Spain and Europe in 2006. Trained by great Spanish chefs, such as Martin Berasategui, he has a fantastic trajectory ahead of him. Recently he opened Calima, a new restaurant on the coast of Spain.

    Kisko García was trained by internationally acclaimed chefs, such as Sergi Arola and works

    in Spain in his family-owned restaurant, El Choco, located in Córdoba, South of Spain. Recently, his restaurant was awarded “Sensational New Andalusian Restaurant” by the International Culinary Encounter, Madrid Fusion.

    Paco Roncero is considered Ferran Adrià's most successful disciple. Roncero has already

    achieved the exalted position of chef at La Terraza del Casino, one of the most esteemed restaurants in Madrid.

    Nacho Basurto’s signature style cook at the Puchera restaurant in Santander, North of Spain,

    uses an innovative vacuum cooking technique. Basurto was trained by renowned chefs such as Martín Berasategui, Ángel Llorente, Ferrán and Albert Adriá. He has created his own gourmet product line of cheese, preserves and desserts. He received the New Culinary Technology award in 2003.

    Trends & Innovations Trends and Innovations Conference Presented by Mr. Xavier Terlet, Managing Director of XTC World Innovation, a market research think tank, the seminar addressed the issue of worldwide food innovation trends. It also gave the opportunity to the audience to have an analysis through the following axes: pleasure, health, fitness, convenience, and ethics according to XTC’s market report. Trends & Innovations Area, 3rd edition Acknowledging the impressive dynamism of the F&B industry, SIAL China presented 19 innovative products selected among the exhibited items by an international and independent team of experts. Criteria were the new and innovative aspects of those products in their respective markets. Panels with charts and descriptions of worldwide trends in the field of food and beverage gave a full view of the market. Yumberry Juice, a product made of a typical Chinese fruit, has been selected as favorite of the judges and will participate at the SIAL d’Or competition during SIAL 2008 in Paris. 19 products from 5 countries were chosen this year by a team of independent experts:

    The Retail Market in China by Shiyao Investment The Shiyao Investment Seminar introduced the participants to the reality of the retail market in China. After a presentation of the latest legislation regarding imports and distribution of such products in China, the core subject was addressed with a close look at issues such as the weight and organization of the different players.     Seminar on the Wine Market in Greater China (Sopexa + DT Asia + Torres) How does the mainland market compare with Taiwan and Hong Kong? Every day of the show a conference addressed the characteristics of the wine market in mainland China and contrasted it with the situation in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Sopexa, a French body promoting French food and agricultural products all over the world, presented market data and trends whereas DT-Asia and TORRES China gave the point of view of two importers settled in China. State of the art Wine & Spirits Tasting Sessions For the second time at SIAL China, two wine tasting rooms were set up, dotted with the most professional equipment for wine experts and lovers! Equipped with professional glassware and spittoons, wine cabinets, these air-conditioned and sound-proof rooms were the ideal place for visitors to attend qualified wine and spirits presentations. Exhibitors made discover their own wine and spirits in 16 sessions. Carrefour Conference on Chinese Consumers The profile of Chinese consumers with emphasis on their eating and purchasing habits. Presented by Carrefour, the leading foreign retailer in China. Drinks Media Wire Seminar "How to promote your food and beverage products through the media in China and on your export markets?" Drinks Media Wire – the first international distributor of information sent to journalists by professionals working in the food and Beverage sector – presented different strategies of communications around F&B products in the Middle Kingdom. With its variety of exhibitor booths and special events and seminars, SIAL China 2007 was a trade show that F&B players could not afford to miss. This last edition of the fair left many satisfied exhibitors, many of them having already started planning their attendance in 2008. The 9th annual SIAL China will return to SNIEC, from May 14 to 16, 2008.
