Chandelier is an electropop song sung by Sia, Lyrically, the song is gloomy as it talks about the typical ‘party girl’s’ thought process when dealing with alcohol. The video is obscure which demonstrates the genre characteristics of electropop.

Relationship between Lyrics and Visuals

‘Party girls don’t get hurt, cant feel anything’ as the dancer is stood in the doorframe, showing the feeling that people get when they are drunk they feel unstoppable also being above the floor shows he audience how she feels, like being above everyone then jumping back to the floor. ‘I push it down’; the dancer drops to the floor representing the fall from being drunk and the party world, to reality.

• ‘1, 2, 3, drink’ the dancer grabs out in front of her as if she is taking a glass.

Before the lyrics ‘I’m going to fly like a bird through the night’ the dancer falls; this is because birds risk injury by flying at night. This lyric compares the character to the bird suggesting that the character will risk injury by not drinking.

‘I'm holding on for dear life, wont look down wont open my eyes, fill my glass up..’ These shots for me is the most memorable as she it could connect to the lyrics by holding onto the curtains and forcing her eyes open when the lyrics are saying the opposite as the song goes ‘fill my glass up..’ her head rolls up the curtains. The as the pace of the song increases the girl dances quickly as an explosion of emotion.

Motifs

Sia’s music videos seem to have a similar dark tone and muted colouring as Chandelier shows.

Although the singer does not appear in the video, the dancer wears a wig that is iconic to Sia and her star image.

• The dancer in the video is in the TV reality show ‘Dance Moms’ and by appearing in this music video is a slight intertextual reference.
