description

Small Business Firewall !! In our interconnected world being without the internet is like not having a Radio, TV, Mobile Phone or a Car- access to the World Wide Web is a necessity. The Net is a default accessory in a home and definitely a must in an Office. According to Facebook in 2010 Australia had 9 million of our population subscribed as Facebook Users, Nielsen claims 80% of the population has an internet connection. A study by The Radicati Group(UK) claims that in 2010 we had 2.9 Billion eMails users and by 2014 the number will rise to 3.8 Billion, the average number of emails received and send per person per day was about 112 in 2010. The habits we have with the Use of a Computer also have changed; in the good old days we used to “Power Off” computer after it was used. Now there is sufficient build in energy saving smart software in most of the quality built computers to hibernate if we are not using the keyboard so the next time it is a quick press of a button to fire-up and use the computer. So, with a high level of internet use many should be very concerned with the security between the computer and the internet in our “Always On - Connected - World”. The purpose of this document is to address a component of the security of a computer access to the internet in relation to the firewall. The large Enterprise Corporations have local and global armies of Technical Teams whose primary responsibility is to keep their Corporate Network protected. My experience is that most of the mistakes in relation to the Internet Access happen in SME market. Whether it is lack of knowledge, interest or limited funds I don’t know. So, this document will address the Home and Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) connection to the internet, If your Home PC or Office PC connects with the Internet- then you must make sure that you have a firewall between your PC and the Internet. The key advantages of a hardware over a software firewall is that ; Hardware firewall is a separate device, as a result it is more secure, the manufacturers who concentrate on Firewalls that is all they do. So we get a more reliable device, updates once applied become only for the specific unit, you don’t need to worry about the compliance with the operating system. Most of the good Hardware Firewalls also have built-in Virus, Spam and Filtering tools and further more have VPN Client ( Virtual Private Network) capability. So, you will have a unique engagement between your network and an external trusted device. Such as a Team Member Notebook or a Mobile Phone. Although software firewalls are easy to deploy (Except enterprise level tools such as Checkpoint, Microsoft Internet Security Gateway) and low cost to purchase in a business environment what you need is consistency and reliability. If trying to save $ 2500/- of capital cost over 3-5 years you cost the business 10 times more by not installing a firewall, which will not be a good outcome.
