Transcript of SI Honolulu Newsletter 2012 08AUG
Aloha SIH members!
I am very happy to be sharing my first President’s message with you all. We’ve transitioned nicely to the new Board of Directors and Leadership Team and we are off to an excellent start.
We have a very busy and exciting year ahead of us! Right out of the gate there was the Soroptimist International of the Americas convention at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. We met Soroptimists from such places as Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, Canada and Mexico just to name a few. Look out for our Annual Calendar of Events coming soon. This will allow you to Save-the-Date for several upcoming events and see the plan for this year.
The theme I have chosen for this year is…
“Individually we can make a difference, together we can make an impact.” I chose this theme because I’ve seen us come together in the last few years and really start to make an impact in our community. No matter how big or small we are headed in the right direction and I know the impact we make will increase. We’ve had much success working together with the other Oahu Clubs on Taste of the Arts and now with a projected 3 Oahu Club service project in the works we’ll create an even larger impact thru working together. Not to mention how we work together within our own club. It’s an exciting time to be a member of Soroptimist International of Honolulu!
Lastly, I would like to sincerely thank our Immediate Past President, Julie Arigo. Julie was an incredible President and as I shadowed her throughout her term I learned so much. She is not only an awesome leader but also a beautiful person inside and out. Thank you Julie!
I am looking forward to getting to know you all a little better this year. And I thank you very much for this opportunity.
Sincerely,
Shawnee Hammer SI Honolulu President

SI Honolulu was well represented at the recent Soroptimist International of the Americas 42nd Biennial Convention. Soroptimist's from around the world joined together right here in Hawaii at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. We laughed and learned together during the many events that were attended. We will have more information on this convention at our next Business and Program meeting.

Sheena Choy founder Beads 4 Books, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing literacy and the joy of reading to children who would otherwise never get the opportunity to develop a love for book.
With money gained through donations and the sale of Sheena’s
handcrafted rings and earrings, Beads for Books supports various shelters on Oahu by supplying them with books. Currently, Beads for Books has extended its support to three locations: the Next Step Homeless Shelter, Vancouver House, and the 0-3
Program.
In addition to the $500 VRA Award for Beads for Books, Sheena raised additional funds to donate $1,000 to the Next Step Shelter.
