A word from Reda Sedki

With the approach of the Holiday Season and the end of 2007, I wish all of you a very merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah or Eid Mubarak. I also wish you a splendid, healthy 2008.

The Holiday's approach indicates the end of the first half of our season’s activities. A time when the Executive contemplate and try to discover if there is something we can do better and improve. There were a lot of good things that happened.

We have already had two competitions for each of the Prints and Slides. Members’ participation was at a record for all. We have seen so much art exhibited by the members during those competitions. Novice members presented such good work as if they were born stars. It is going to be difficult for few of them to continue being “novice” next season. We are very proud of the winners.

Special Programs presented three speakers that tackled new topics to the Club. Members’ reaction to these topics and the speakers varied and is the subject of Exec discussions.

Basic, General and Photoshop Workshops presented several photography topics that attracted more than the usual participation. AV, Studio and Photoshop SIGs activities were limited due to delay in room cancellations and other circumstances. I am sure that the next season half will substitute for that.

The Outings coordinators attracted record numbers of members to Algonquin Park and Gatineau streets shooting photos around and having fun. Twenty-two members shared dinner and laughter in that small city outside the Park. A lot of friendship and bonding started during that outing.

In summary, I feel that the club Executive and members are having a lot of “Funography”, sharing their love of the art and exchanging their photo experiences. But as usual, there is a lot of room for improvement. I emphasize my continuous approach to all members and ask for more participation, even with your ideas and thoughts. We are a photo club where we share in giving as much as in taking.

Again, Happy Holidays and a wonderful 2008 for all of you and for the Camera Club of Ottawa. SR

Rotary Club (continued)

Here is the deal: the theme is the Ottawa region, broadly defined -- the National Capital region, the Ottawa and Rideau Valleys. Images are needed for all seasons of the year; pictorial is more suitable than graphic or "artsy." The final format will be almost square: 12" wide x 10-3/8" high (30.4 cm x 26.4 cm) --

a ratio of 1:1.15. Submissions should be cropped accordingly and must be of adequate resolution for a print of this size. I do not have the printer's requirements yet, so assume a minimum of 2400 pixels wide.

The Rotary Club wants a minimum of 24 images from CCO members and they will create a jury to make the final selection from a total of about 40 submissions. It appears that we are to be the main, but not the only, source. Individual photographers will get credit if their images are selected, as will the CCO.

Look over your images, or get out in the next few months, and email me up to 3 of your best by April 1. If numbers require it, I'll use an independent jury to make an initial selection of the best 24 to send on to the Rotarians. (This could be a perfect job for our regular end-of-year panel of three judges.) In the meantime, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with me. SR

New Members (continued)Carey Moulton

I started with photography while studying for my first degree in Aeronautical Engineering. At the time I was enamored with fashion photography but slowly branched my interest from there to the other beautiful things that could be created with a camera and film. My first camera was a Nikon FM2 with a 50mm f/1.4 E series lens (including an Auto Image 28mm f/2.8, that I still use, and a long ago relinquished 2 touch zoom that I miss terribly even though I can’t even remember what it was) and a travel tripod. I took photography quite seriously at

the time and while I was in school started to make my own black and white prints, renting darkrooms also taking a photography course in community college. But then my career started in earnest, and although I had aspirations of pursuing photography, that, and other interests, were consumed by the work-a-day world.

I have, off and on, maintained my connection to the craft, I widened my cadre of lenses, and always had my camera around for vacation, family events and even business trips. Then came the dry times, where all else was completely consumed by the daily grind, which eventually led to a huge corporate restructuring that left me and 300 other engineers out of work. I was plucked back (gratefully) into the working world and after a settling in period the itch for an artistic channel returned, this time with a digital bite. I still have my FM2 and along the way I have also acquired a Nikon F4, F3 and Nikkormat, but I use then infrequently.

I am currently exploring my own limitations as a photographer

(subject matter and composition), as well as the limitations of the digital medium (not all DX Sensors are made equal). The Camera Club seems like an excellent place to share in these pursuits. SR

Gary ClayGary was a member of the

RCAF/Canadian Armed Forces from 1957 to 1995. He was an interceptor pilot flying the CF 100 aircraft in France and the CF 101 aircraft in Chatham, N.B. and Bagotville, Quebec. He served as a pilot instructor and also as Commanding Officer, Canadian Forces Station Falconbridge. He retired from the military with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel following a tour at National Defence Headquarters, Ottawa.

Since retirement Gary has been a volunteer for the Ottawa Jazz Festival (full time during the 12 day festival) and serves on the Board of Directors and committees during the rest of the year.

Gary developed a serious interest in photography 3 years ago with the purchase of a DSLR. He joined the camera club in 2004, was a member for 2 years and is returning after a year’s absence. He was co-coordinator of the Photoshop SIG in 2005 and is coordinator again this year. SR

KAP (Continued)

Kite Aerial Photography (KAP), simply put, entails hanging a camera from a kite line for the purpose of taking aerial photographs. KAP has been around for over 100 years and is a growing hobby worldwide with a large online community.

There are various types of kites used in KAP. The most commonly used are the FlowForm, Rokkaku, Delta and Dopero. Each has their own pros and cons and it is common to have more than one to accommodate different wind conditions. I use a 78 inch Rokkaku by Premier Kites in lighter winds and a Sutton FlowForm 16 with a “fuzzy tail” in stronger winds. I use 250 pound braided Dacron line on a hoop winder.

KAP starts with kite flying and learning to do so safely is a must. The kite, line and

camera cradle are all potential hazards to your own and others’ safety. Controlling the camera to get the perfect shot, while flying a kite, is a lot to concentrate on. It’s much easier to do both once you are comfortable with your kite in various wind conditions. Take the time to see how your kite handles before attaching your camera to it.

Once you’re comfortable with your kite then it’s time to attach a camera. The majority of KAPers use point-and-shoot cameras

though some are using SLRs. Generally only 10 to 20 percent of photos in a given KAP outing will be usable so digital is preferred to film due to the higher amount of photos that can be taken while the kite is in the air. The immediate feedback that digital provides is also very handy. When selecting a camera, consider one that has manual settings such as shutter priority and exposure compensation.

Once you have the kite flying in stable winds you’ll suspend the camera from the kite line about 50 to 100 feet down from the kite using a Picavet suspension and cradle either purchased, or homemade. I purchased the “Brooxes Deluxe KAP Kit”, which includes everything one needs to get started with the exception of the radio control components. I use a Futaba radio (model T4YF), receiver and servos, which can be purchased as a kit from most hobby shops.

A remote control setup is not required and “auto-KAP” is

becoming quite popular. With an auto-KAP setup the camera cradle rotates on its own while the camera’s shutter is automatically triggered at a specific interval.

KAP is a lot of fun and the results are very rewarding. It need not be expensive and it is possible to get into KAP for under $200 but, as with most hobbies, the sky is the limit. Thank you for having me as a guest speaker and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Happy KAPing!Matt Young [email protected]://kap.theyoungsonline.net/ SR

Second Slide Competition – Misnamed??

Tom StephensThe topic for our second slide competition of the year was

“Three of a Kind.” Maybe this should have been “Four of a Kind,” as it was the first under the new rules allowing four, not six, entries per member. And, with the new open choice between the topic and open, there was a slight tendency to favor the topic – 80 entries vs. 70 in the open category. More importantly, the total number of images was much more manageable for the judge and satisfying for members, as our judge was able to comment on all images. Participation was good: 31 members entered on topic, and 28 entered the open category. All told, 40 members submitted 150 images, meaning that most participants submitted the maximum of four allowed.

The judge for this competition was Roman Konopka. Roman is well-known to members as a thoughtful and constructive judge and the club calls upon him often. In addition to his informative

commentary on the images, Roman showed us a bit of his own work that fit with the evening’s topic. When he is not judging for CCO or working at the Museum of Nature, Roman shoots for the stock agency First Light:

Once again, a few members walked away with the lion’s share of the awards. Suellen Seguin and Kathy Clarkin both had three awards, while two each were earned by Michel Casault, Isabelle Dhavernas, Guy Dupuis, Niels Henriksen, Dan Jones, Carey Moulton, Roy Sletcher, and Gunn Vuttudal. Remember – this is out of only four entries!

The next topic is texture: think snow, woollen stockings, flaky pastry, turkey skin, pine needles, wrinkled cranberries, wine corks, crystal goblets, silver cutlery, Alka-Seltzer…. Happy Holiday! SR

The Editor

Pierre KerrWhen I went digging through my files for the last December

issue, I realized that this is my third one. I should have it down to a science by now. You know, clip art that goes with the season.

There are some changes in the new year to the Tuesday night program. Please take a look and as always, double check with the website for last minute updates.

I don't have any more new member bios in my files. I know there are still some of you out there. I might have to send you another e-mail to persuade you not to be so shy.

Once again, thanks to those that contributed articles. Without you, I might have to write something myself, and you don't want that.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and any other joy of the season. SR
