The Lakeland Lectures are a forum for researchers, students and members of the public to discuss contemporary issues affecting Japan. Lakeland College has offered a U.S.-accredited liberal arts program in Tokyo since 1991. Lakeland’s main campus is in Wisconsin, USA and was founded in 1862. Location: 5-7-12 Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, 1st Floor See www.lcjapan.com/lectures for map; Tel: 03-3225-0425 V olcanic activities in Japan have increased since the Great Tohoku Earthquake of March 2011. Over the past couple of years, in particular, the number of volcanic eruptions has increased, as exemplified by the eruptions of Mt. Ontake and Hakone in central to eastern Japan, and Mt. Aso, Sakurajima, and Kuchinoerabujima in southwestern Japan. The government has been promoting an increase in the awareness of dangers associated with volcanic eruptions, yet safety measures against volcanic hazards, including the construction and/or updating of hazard maps, lag far behind those regarding earthquakes and tsunamis. This lecture will provide basic knowledge about volcanic eruptions and consequent hazards, including both natural and human- made disasters, and will discuss some effective ways to protect ourselves against such dangers. Shuji Yoshida Thursday, January 21ST • 7:00 Eruption and Beyond Shuji Yoshida holds a Bachelors of Engineering from Kyushu University, an M.Sc. in Petroleum Geology from Imperial College London, and a Ph.D. in Geoscience from the University of Toronto. He has extensive industrial and postdoctoral research experience, ranging from environmental protection research to petroleum exploration and production. Since 2005, he has been an associate professor at Chiba University, where he teaches earth sciences and communication skills in English and in Japanese. His current research focuses on ancient volcanic activities in Izu-Bonin volcanoes (Izu Peninsula, Oshima, and Niijima). A frequent lecturer, he has been certified by the National Speakers Association (USA) as a Professional Speaker since 2012.
