Economic Impact

During FY2010, direct spending by the university, its employees,students and visitors, as well as indirect spending by recipients ofthe original expenditures, accounted for $149.4 million to the Cityof Huntsville, Walker County, and Montgomery County.

The university supported an estimated 3,798 jobs directly andindirectly, and total personal income generated in Walker andMontgomery Counties was $124.7 million.

SHSU is the second largest employer in Huntsville accounting for1/6 of all local jobs.

Economic Impact

More than 1,700 Huntsville homes are owned by SHSU people.The people of SHSU pay approximately $2.6 million in propertytaxes each year.

SHSU’s operational activity adds more than $63 million per yearto the local bank credit base.

Approximately 27% of the children attending HuntsvilleIndependent School District (HISD) schools have some connectionto SHSU.

Consequently, $6.6 million of the money received by HISDfrom the state is related to the presence of SHSU.

Contributions by students, faculty and staff to local churches andcharities amount to ~$2.9 million annually.

SHSU Putting the STUDENT in Student-Athlete

During the 2014-15 academic year, 166 Bearkat student-athletesaccrued a 3.0 or higher overall GPA.

Over the 2005-2015 academic years, SHSU has placed moreindividuals on the SLC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll(student-athletes with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher) than anyof the 12 universities in the league.

The Bearkat athletic GPA has been 2.83 or higher for 18consecutive semesters.

The Bearkats’ 3.08 overall GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in 2014-15 marksthe best academic semester in Sam Houston history.

7 Bearkat sports squads own team GPAs higher than 3.0

Sam Houston student-athletes have been named “Student-Athleteof the Year” in their sport twenty-two times since 2007.
