[KELLY'S URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL 86 DAWLEY MAGNA. SHROPSHIRE. DAWLEY MAGNA is a town and parish on the road from Wellington to Bridgnorth, with a station at Horsehav in this parish on the Wellington and Severn Junction branch of the Great Western railway. 4 miles sou t h-east from Wellington. about 2! north-west from Madelev and 5 south-west from Shifnal: it is in the Wrekin division of the county. in Wellin~ton division of South Bradford hundred. Madeley county court district. petty sessional division of Wellington! rural dee:nery of Shifrial, archdeaconry of Salop and diocese of Lichfield. The parish was formed into a Local Government District in 1876. but under the Local Government Act. 1894 (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73). an Urban District Council was estab- lished. The church of the Holy Trinity. erected in 1845, is a building of sandstone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave. baptistery and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells: there is a font of Norman date: on the east wall is a tablet in memory of the men of the parish who fell in the Great War, 1914-18: in 1938 the east end and chancel were transformed to the design of Sir Charles Nicholson M.A., F. R.I.B.A. the altar and reredos beinz the gift of the parishioners in memory of the Rev. T. R. J. Fawkes, vicar 1888 to 1935. The register dates from the year 1666. The Jiving is a vicarage, net vearly value £350, including 2 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Lichfield, and held since 1936 by the ReI'. Ed!!"ar Stanley Banfield, of Lin- coln Theological College. There is a Mission church in Hinkshay ; a Baptist chapel, erected in 1846, seating 550 persons ; also two Methodist chapels. The Market Hall, erected in 1867 and the property of the Urban Council. is 311 oblong structure of red brick, with an ornamental frontage and vaults underneath. and is surmounted by a turret containing one bell and a clock, presented in 1867 bv the late Lt.-Col. William Kenyon-Slaney. A piece of ground of about 2 acres in extent was given bv the late Rt. Hon. Col. William Slaney Kenyon-Slaney M.P. and H. C. Simpson esq. to be used as a public park, and was opened in 1901. In the High street is a monument. erected in 1910, in memory of Capt. Webb, born in this parish in the year 1848, who lost his life in an attempt to swim the Niagara rapids in 1883. A charity of £7, derived from land, was left in 1684 by Richard Hodden, gentleman, of Ludlow, and a third of this is distributed to the poor of this parish on St. Thomas' Day. Lewis' charity of £200 was left in r887. and the interest is given to the poor annually in blankets: Greenhalgh's charity of £1 yearly, left in 1892, is also for the poor. Gas and electricity are available. Water is supplied by the Borough of Wenlock. The soil is various, The minerals are ironstone and coal. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 3,259 acres of land and inland water; the population in 1931 was 7,669 in the civil parish and Urban District and of the ecclesiastical parish, 2,815. Mainstone is south-west fromthe road from Bishop's Castle to Clun. l\IARKET DRAYTONMARKET DRAYTOX is a parish and market townand head of a county court district, situated on a billnear the Tern stream and the Shropshire Union canal.with a station on the Great Western Railway Company'smain line from London to Manchester, 173 miles byrail and 154 by road from London, 19 north-east fromShrewsbury, 16 north from Wellington and 14 north-west from Newcastle-under-Lyme; the London, Mid-land and Scottish Railway Company's branch line fromStoke-upon-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Silverdalealso forms a junction at the station, which is con-venientlv situated a short distance from the town onthe Cheshire side; for civil parochial purposes it wasdivided into four districts, viz. Market Drayton, LittleDrayton, the hamlets of Sutton, Betton, Woodseaves,andLongslow, and the township of Tyrley, which latkrplace is in the county of Stafford. By Local Govern-ment Board Order dated 24th March, 1914, Dray tonMagna and Dray ton Parva were constituted an UrbanDistrict, governed by a council of fift-eenmembers. Bythe same Order Betton was transferred for civil purposesto Norton-in-Hales, Longslow to Moreton Say, andSutton and Woodseaves were formed into a new civilparish named Sutton-upon-Tern. The old manorial cus-toms still obtain, the fairs being proclaimed by thesteward of the manor, during which a court of piepoudreis held, to determine all disputes that may arise duringthe time of the fairs; the market was originallygranted by King Henry the 'I'hird. The parish com-prises the hamlets of Dray ton Magna, Dray ton Parva,Sutton, Betton, Woodseaves and Longslow, in Shrop-shire, and the township oCTyrley, in Staffordshire, inthe Oswestry division of the county, North or Dray tondivision of the hundred of Bradford, rural deanery ofHodnet, archdeaconry of Salop and diocese of Lichfield ;the town is lighted with gas by a company, formed in1862, and also by electricity; water is supplied fromsprings at Burnt Wood and Cold Comfort farm, BloreHeath, and Brodder Springs, Almington. The church ofSt. Mary is a rzth century building of stone in the Gothicstyle, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and an embattledwestern tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and8 bells, the 6 old bells having been re-hung and 2new ones added in 1887; in 1931 the bells were re-castand a new metal frame added: the west door is afine example of Norman work: the stained westwindow, erected in 1901, is a memorial to QueenVictoria: there are other windows to the Corbet andRadford-Norcop families; in 1898 a rood screen wasput up: in 1884 the church was completely restoredat a cost of between £8,000 and £9,000; it was reseatedin 1901: a reredos and altar were erected in 1912: in1938 the organ was renovated and modernised: a WarMemorial chapel was opened in 1921: there are 500 sit-tings. The register dates from the year 1558. The livingis a vicarage, net yearly value £422, with residence, inthe /lift of Reginald Corbet esq. who is lay impropriator

(the yearly value of the impropriated tithes being f.785),and held since 1937 by the Rev. Lewis Mervyn Charles-Edwards, of Keble College, Oxford, who is rural dean ofHodnet. The parish room was erected in 1907. Emmanuelchurch, in Burl$:age street, erected in 1882,was a proprie-tary chapel until February, 1904,when it was consecratedand the living made a full benefice: it is an edifice ofred brick, in a modern Gothic style, from designs by Mr.Bower, architect, and consists of chancel, nave, vestry,west porch and a low western turret containing one bell;in 1899 a new vestry was added at the expense of J. CecilOlay esq.: in 1891 a memorial window was erected toMr. and Mrs. Embrey, who built the church and leftmoney for its partial endowment: in 1900 new choirstalls were erected, and in 1904 a stone font was pre-sented by the vicar: there are 320 sittings. The livingis a vicarage, net yearly value ,4280, with residence, in thegift of the Church Pastoral Aid Society Patronage Board,and held since 1939 by the Rev. John Cookson ComptonRA. The Roman Catholic church, in Great Hales street,dedicated to SS. Thomas Aquinas and Stef.hen Harding,was erected in 1886. The Methodist chape , in Frogmoreroad, was built in 1867, and the Congregational chapel in1776; both will seat 300 persons. The cemetery, openedin 1868, occupies 4 acres, 2 of which have been conse-crated; two-thirds of the other portion of the ground,with the use of one of the two mortuary chapels, isreserved for Dissenters of all denominations; it is underthe control of a burial board of 9 members. The TownHall, in Cheshire street, built in 1897, will hold 500persons. The Fire Brigade Station is at the ToWIlHall;there is a Morris fire tender and Dennis trailer pump,a portable fire pump and a hose cart. The market for fishand meat is in High street; the general market is heldon Wednesday and one for meat on Saturday. The cattlemarket adjoins the railway station,· and the sales areheld every Wednesday. Fairs are held in the town onSept. roth, Oct. 24th and Nov. 24th. The Butter Crossis IDCheshire street. The charities amount to about £247yearly, which sum is partly distributed in coals, breadand money, and partly appropriated to the apprenticingof poor boys and the clothing of a number of poor menand women. Blore Heath, a short distance from thetown. was the scene during the Wars of the Roses of asanguinary encounter, September 23, 1459, between theYorkists and Lancastrians, in which the latter weredefeated and their leader, Lord Audley, slain; a cross iserected on the spot where he fell. The chief landownersare Reginald Corbet esq. J.P. who is lord of the manor,John Radford-Norcop esq. J.P. the Earl of Powis (lord-lieut.) and Maj. A. E. C. Wilson. The land is undula-ting; soil, loam; subsoil. gravel and sandstone. Thepopulation of the Urban District in 1931 was 4,749; thearea is 1,216.The population of Drayton-in-Hales, or Market Dray-

ton St. Mary, ecclesiastical parish, which includes partof Tyrley in Staffordshire, in 1931 was 2,665.
