Summer and early Fall 2012 have been busy times for your Ararat Clowns. With parades, Birthday parties, various clown jobs and fundraising for

the Circus, the Clowns have definitely been on the move the last several months.

In lieu of our regular business meeting in August, we had a dinner meeting at Ryan’s Steakhouse in In-dependence. While discussing upcoming events and possible skits for the Circus were high on the agenda, Director Charlie Parker took the time to present our Circus Ringmaster, Jimmie Jones, with a “Clown Shoe” badge commemorating 100+ Circus Performances. Pote’s Notes! BY RICHARD FLOYD

We have the Shrine Circus coming this month to Municipal Au-ditorium. This is a major fund raiser for Ararat. Please help us make this Circus successful. We need your time and talents to

help at the Circus performances, and raising funds through ticket sales, ad-vertising, donations and purchasing Circus Mom and Dad pins. Let’s all get behind Wayne Spencer, Chief Rabban and help make this one of our best Circuses.

A great time was had by all who attended the Country Hoedown on October 6th. We were honored to have Noble Scott Hogue from Abou Ben Adhem Shrine attend this special event.

On November 25th, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, we are inviting all nobles and ladies to help decorate the Temple for Christmas. We will start at 9:00 am and around noon we will have a Pot Luck Tailgate Party to watch the Chiefs play. Come on out and help us decorate and have fun.

By now everyone should have received their 2013 dues notices. If you are unable to pay your dues in full, installment payments will be accept-ed. Your membership card will be mailed to you when your final payment is received.

I want to thank all who helped make our Fall Swap Meet a success.

The Grand Master, York Rite, Scottish Rite and Shrine all had an important part in our Masonic Unity Evening. The Arch Production was great. Thanks to all who made this evening successful. The message about the Masonic Fraternity was well received.

In order to make our Fraternity strong everyone needs to bring in a new member. Remember to do it now for “Tomorrow is Now.”

Yours in Faith,Richard Floyd, Potentate, Ararat Shrine, 2012

BLUE SPRINGS SHRINE CLUBBy Fred Harle, P.P.

They always say, “April Showers BringMay Flowers.” Well, here it is April 10th,haven’t seen much rain here in our greatcity of Blue Springs, MO, but you knowwhat, if you are like me those May flowersare already starting to bloom. You knowthe kind I’m talking about, those pretty lit-tle yellow flowers that we spend a smallfortune trying to eliminate from our yardevery year. Yep, they are called dande-lions. If you don’t have any I’ll be morethan happy to bring you some of the onesfrom my front yard. That is just before Itry to get rid of them.

Today Jennie’s brother Kenny and hisLady Emma who live in Warrensburg, MOdrove up to see us. We met at Bob Evan’sRestaurant in Lee’s Summit, after whichall four of us visited the Swap Meet. Wow,what a super extravaganza. An even big-ger surprise was to be greeted by Ill. SirKevin Sleyster and being chauffeured byour Recorder, Mike Wheeler. Upon enter-ing the rear gate we were greeted by thehardest working Shriner I know , NobleMac McWilliams. Try and keep up withthis Noble and you’ll find it’ s impossible. Thanks Mac for all that you do for Ararat.

Let me tell you about our March BSSCmeeting. To begin with, our meetings withNoble Bill Fickle at the helm just get bet-ter and better . Following the usual open -ing ceremonies for our Shrine Club, we getdown to the business of trying to catch thefatted calf so to speak. See picture of ourDivan Liaison Officer, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby followed by alegion of hungry Shriners. We also treatour ladies okay . Please note picture withladies, Carol Newport, Vivian Snell,Marguerite Merryman, and Pat Stansell.

Thank you ladies for continuing to shareBSSC with all the rest of us.

Our President, Bill Fickle arranged aspectacular program for our entertainment.Jordan Mitchell, a member of DeMolay, presented a Ceremony of Life in full form.Wow, super impressive, you could hear apin drop. What a treat to see and hear sucha talented young man.

We treat our dignitaries with respect, and it’s always a pleasure to put out the oldBSSC welcome mat for any and all templeofficers. Please don’t wait for a specialinvite. The door is always open and wewant you to come and join us. See photoof President Bill Fickle, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby, and AmbassadorBud Higginbotham.

Our good buddy Noble Lou Sohn hadsome stents inserted close to his heart andhe is progressing great. He heard aboutPast President Bill Clinton doing okaywith his so he got some.

Last, but also a very important part ofour BSSC team is Noble James Gar gotta. He puts together our club newsletter , sec-ond to none, that keeps all our membersinformed about what’s going to happen, and what has happened. Not only aboutanything and everything in and about ourclub, but other clubs, uniformed units, andour temple in general. If you don’t believeit come see for yourself! BSSC meets onthe 4th Monday night of each month at6:30 pm in the American Legion Buildingon 7 Hwy in Blue Springs, MO. Call us,we’ll tell you how to get here.

That’s enough for this time! So untilnext time, a hug doesn’ t cost anything togive or get. Think about it!!!!!!

Hospital Chairman Ed Stowell is seen at left, with the inside scoop on how recycling your old papers can help us provide transportation to the Shriners Hospitals for

“our kids.” The money that is received from recycling goes directly to our Hospital Patient Transportation Fund. Use the bright yellow and green paper retrievers in Ararat’s south parking lot. If you have any questions, call the Hospital Of-fice: 816-923-1319.

Hospital Van DriversIf you are a member of Ararat Shrine you are encouraged to call the Hospital Transpor-

We encourage every man in Ararat to become a driver. It will require you to go to your State Driver’s License Office and obtain a copy of your driving record. As a matter of fact, all drivers need to bring their records up to date in this manner.

If you know a child we can help, please call:

Dr. Richard Kagan mentioned at a Board meeting that Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren® -– Cincinnati needed a new laser. The lasers the hospital had were almost or already obsolete.

Jerry Jamieson, from Antioch Shrine, went to work right away with this informa-tion and contacted the Miami County and Champaign County Shrine Clubs. “These two Shrine Clubs like to buy equipment for the Cincinnati Hospital,” he said.

It took close to a year and a half, but through the collection of aluminum cans and bimonthly can crushing parties, along with individual donations, the two Shrine clubs raised the funds to pur-chase a Palomar Icon™ laser. The laser arrived at the hospital in July, and already the physicians at Shriners have trained and are bringing patients in for treatments.

“This new laser is another tool in our belt to treat scars, both early and old,” said Dr. Kevin Yakuboff, Chief of Pediatric Plastic Surgery. The new laser has different hand pieces so that physicians can tailor the treatment to the patient’s specific needs.

“This newer technology has more potential to deal with chronic scars, so more people can come to us,” Dr. Yakuboff said. The various hand pieces are used to minimize scar thickness, eliminate both dark and light hair growth, reduce the color of new scars, change the color and appearance of old scars, and more.

While the new laser helps the medical staff treat more conditions more effec-tively, there is no way to tell how many treatments are needed, said Dr. Kagan, Chief of Staff. “This is not a ‘one and done.’ Follow-up treatments are required every six to eight weeks until the best results are achieved,” he said.

“This new laser clearly benefits our patients,” said Dr. Kagan. “It enables Shri-ners Hospital to manage scar and skin conditions to a degree that is not avail-able in many communities.”

Dr. Yakuboff said that in addition to patient treatment, clinical studies are planned in the future to determine what the range and best applications are for the new laser.

Jerry Jamieson is happy the laser has arrived and that patients are already benefiting from treatment. “We love the great things we can do for these kids,” he said. “Anything we can do to offer them a better quality of life.”

Well, here we are in the month of May, which meansthe parade season has started. Hope that everyone hada good time at Missouri City and Richmond.

Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. InMarch, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome. He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play, however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.Art had said before we got started that his grandsonwas here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that wemight have a future Master Mason in the works.

On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. Hepassed away at the young age of 100, a milestonewhich he turned last August. All our prayers and goodwishes go out to the rest of his family. He was oneNoble that stood out above the rest in every way possible. He is truly missed.

Next we have a little bit about the O.B. SpringDance. It may not have been the best turnout we haveever had, but President Waco still did an outstandingjob. He made sure that those who did make it reallyhad a good time; so, “Hats off and job well done,” toour President. And let’s not forget our ladies for having the Silent Action in the back of Bennett; “A

GREATBIG THANK YOU,” from President Wacoand the rest of us as well.

Now how about the month of April? Hmmmm, let’ssee! It was reported that our President Waco, who alsoplays the bass drum, is very versatile. He can scratchhis back with one hand and continue to play well withthe other. Who knew?

On another note, the O.B. would like to welcomeback Noble Don Lanning. He took a trip to Englandfor a little while but had to come back because he didnot have a visa to be able to stay longer. He said that hewas having a great time over there with his wife, andgot to go and see his son as well. So all in all the tripmay have been short but the time was well spent.

Just to touch a little bit on the Swap Meet, the O.B.had a pretty good turnout to help in all areas from thepop wagon to picking up trash. President Waco wouldjust like to say, “THANKS GUYS.” He couldn't havedone it without us. Saturday was the best day. It wascrowded but we all managed to make it through.Sunday was not as busy, but still a pretty good turnout. So from the nobles of the Oriental Band to all of thenobles that were able to make it, GREATJOB! Hopeto see you in the fall for the next one.

Til then, be safe.

We finally had great weather for ourmeeting in April: no rain, no snow, no 20degrees and windy! Not that the weatherhad ever discouraged our members. Wehad the same great turnout, be the weath-er good or not so good!

Dignitaries attending this month wereLiaison Officer Dave Bushakra and LadyMolly, and Ambassador Curt Karnes andLady Sue. These two couples truly repre-sent good works and good fellowship forthe Shrine and we look forward eachmonth to seeing them.

We were happy to welcome back Daveand Nora Hutchison. They brought backa “truckload” of fish and invited us to theirhomefor the June meeting and a fish fry!

Dave, incidentally, won the 50/50 draw-ing, but that was in no way connected tothe invitation. We would never use anysort of bribery to get Dave and Nora to fixfish for us!

Our guest speaker was Sally Nance,Administrator for the Excelsior SpringsHospital. She gave us a brief history onthe hospital and all the improvementsthey have made, and the new independentliving center completed recently.

Our May meeting will be held again atCatricks Café in Lawson. Tell yourMasonic friends what fun and fellowshipwe have, and bring someone with you tothe next meeting.

The 77th Annual Shrine CIRCUS is finally here this month!!!

I would first like to congratulate all of the new Nobles that joined Ararat Shrine at our Fall Ceremonial on October 26, in honor of John Nelson. Noble John has been a member of Ararat Shrine for a long time and

has held many important responsibilities, including serving this year as Chief Aide to our Potentate. As you walk around the building you will see John’s handiwork in various places as the engraver of most of the plaques and signs that adorn our building. He has also been active with the Oriental Band and other groups over his time as a member. We look forward to all of you getting active with Ararat Shrine and making it a place that you will enjoy coming to with your family and friends. We also hope that you meet more of the Nobles and call them your friends in a short period of time.

Also for the new Nobles, just FYI the Ararat Shrine Business Office is open Monday-Friday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. If you have any questions please feel free to stop by and one of the ladies will be more than happy to help you.

There is the kid in all of us that gets very excited that the Circus is coming to town. Well the time is finally here this month! Please support the biggest event of our calendar year and bring your families, friends and neighbors to this spectacular show. After you have enjoyed the show stay for the next performance and offer some help selling novelties and getting people to their seats. This annual event has normally been our biggest fund raiser but has lost some of its oomph over the past few years. The money that is generated from this event funds the operation of our awesome Shrine Center that we have been blessed to be in for the past 40+ years.

If you have any questions regarding the Circus and how you can help please contact Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer.

Fraternally,Yours in the faith,Dan SmothersRecorder

This year marks the 88th year the East-West Shrine Games has been more than just a football game. Since 1925 it has been a showcase for the next generation of NFL greats and a price-less benefit event for Shriners Hospitals for Children. The East-West Shrine Game is the

longest-running all-star college football game, combining great football with a great cause and creating experiences for players that will last a lifetime.

The players and coaches tour a Shriners Hospital for Children location before the game. Crafts, games, and other activities bring together college football players and children for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

This year the game will kick off at 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and will be broadcast live on the NFL Network.

We once again want to welcome all the new Nobles and their Ladies to Ara-rat Shrine. It was an awesome Cer-

emonial and we all look forward to meeting you at the Circus. All the New Nobles of 2012 should be excited to work their first Circus. It’s a wonderful time to see smil-ing faces and get to know your fellow Brothers and ladies. Call Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer at 816-305-0466 or Circus Chair-man Joe Snopek at 816-517-5461 to arrange work stations and times. This is truly a very rewarding fundraiser.

I attended the International Membership Seminar in October and will let you know it was the best one so far! They shared so many ideas and examples of success-ful temples, my workbook is full. We are doing some very good things here at Ararat and have a few areas to improve as well. By the time you read this we will have had at least one plan-ning session with the Divan and will establish a detailed plan to continue in the right direction. Membership can always use help, and if you’re interested in being part of the team, please email or call me and we will find a home for you. [email protected] and 816-651-7636.

One reoccurring theme, which was quite

obvious, for the Temples who are experiencing a membership growth was the relationship with their Masonic Lodges. It makes sense since

that is where all the Masons are! But the Shrine leadership and the Masonic leadership seem to work together to build the membership. We’re fortunate to have an active Scottish Rite, York Rite and many local lodges to attend. I’ve spoken with our Masonic Relations Chair-man, RWB Michael Wheeler, and we would like to offer a Masonic Study Club at the Shrine. Perhaps this will allow brothers to reac-quaint themselves with some of the ritual while their ladies enjoy

dinner at the restaurant! This is just in the plan-ning stages, but, be prepared; we will want your participation. And I can think of nothing better than for all Ararat Shriners to feel comfortable going back in a lodge!

For all the Nobles, newer and older, it is important to stay connected with what is going on at the Shrine. You, AND YOUR LADY, can do this by joining the “Morning Buzz” which is a weekly email distributed listing all the festivi-ties and projects going on at the Shrine. It’s a great way to keep informed. You can join by going to www.AraratShrine.com and on the right hand side it says “Sign Up For the Buzz”. Click on that and complete your information and you will be set! I also recommend you join Shriner’s Village too. Your Lady can even join Shriner’s Village and have her own account. Just go to www.ShrinersVillage.com and regis-ter for an account.

Nobles and Ladies, it’s very important we keep steadfast and on a target towards member-ship gain. It all starts with us. We have to con-tinue to progress in all our efforts. Be sure that

you’re the Noble with the positive outlook and spread fellowship freely. Examine your family tree to make sure you’ve offered the Shrine leg-acy to those deserving members of your family. Many are afraid to ask. Introduce them to www.BeaShrinerNow.com and allow them to search for themselves. Let’s remember we can choose to be part of the solution and not the problem. Together, united, we can choose to fill our sails with the winds of success. It’s time everybody gets on board and realizes our financial burdens will diminish if we keep and create more Shri-ners. We find them in Masonic Lodges. Go to your lodge to be a Mason, not a recruiter, and trust me, they will ask you. But you have to get to lodge.

I look forward to a wonderful Circus! It’s one of my favorite times of the year. We get to work side by side with our Brothers and Ladies in a joyful atmosphere. Some we only see at Circus time! It’s an awesome event. I hope to see everyone there. If you have someone in-terested in Freemasonry or the Shrine, please bring them by our Membership booth at the main entrance.

It has been 391 years since Governor Bradford proclaimed a day of Thanksgiving for the harvest reaped by the Plymouth Colony after a winter of starvation and privation. It was particularly appropriate that the surviving colonists, after having undergone dreadful ordeals and after the

labors of planting, cultivating, and harvesting, should have such an occasion. They invited neigh-boring Indians to feast on wild turkey with them and thanked God that they were alive and had food.

Thanksgiving has often been described as “an attitude of gratitude.” How close does this come to applying to any of us? Robert E. Bruce describes the following incident that changed the way he looks at life: While walking along a busy street, I heard someone singing. His gentle voice was distinguishable even above the noise of the traffic. When I located him I discovered that he had no legs and was pushing himself through the crowd in a wheelchair. Catching up with him, I said, “I want you to know that to hear singing from a person in your condition gives the rest of us a lift.” With a grateful smile, he answered, “When I stopped looking at what I had lost and began concentrating on all I had left, I found much for which I could rejoice and be happy.”

Stop and think of someone you know who has “an attitude of gratitude.” Now jot down ways you can demonstrate this attitude each day before celebrating Thanksgiving Day. “I do not have to thank anyone for anything I have,” an old miser grumbled. “Everything I have I got the hard way, by the sweat of my own brow.” “But who gave you the sweat?” his neighbor asked.

We need to face-up to it, my friends! Everything that we are and everything that we possess is because of God’s loving kindness. Doesn’t this give us good reason to pause and to pause often just to say, “Thank you, God.”

Isn’t it good for us to develop an attitude of gratitude?

& Food Wine BY STEVE DOWDY

We spend a lot of time thinking and talking about tasting wine. We try to learn a whole new vocabulary so we can talk about the taste of wine. But, what, exactly, do we taste?

There are four basic flavors found in all wines: fruit, alcohol, acidity, and sweet-ness (or the lack thereof).

All wine tastes of fruit, or should, but wine very seldom tastes of grapes. Sometimes its fruit juicy and fresh, but more often it is complex and reminiscent of several different fruits. Fortified wines often taste of dried fruits. Wines with lots of bottle age taste less obviously of individual fruits but should still be fruity tasting.

Alcohol is produced by the action of yeasts on grape sugars, and helps to give wine its weight and body. It also has pleasant effects on the drinker. The main alcohol in wine is ethanol, but higher alcohols, such as fusel oils, are also produced.

Acidity makes wines refreshing. All wines must have acidity, both for its flavor and for its preservative qualities. Wines with a lot of residual sugar, specifically dessert wines, have ex-tremely high acidity, but you shouldn’t be aware of that when you taste them. Wines from cooler climates tend to have higher acidity than wines from warm climates. Acidity is not the same as sourness in wine. Sourness in wine is a serious fault, usually indicating that the wine has started to turn to vinegar.

Sweet wines are sweet because they contain unfermented sugar from the grape juice. Sweet-ness is optional. Yeast will usually ferment all the sugar present in the grape juice and turn it into alcohol. A wine with no residual sugar is said to be dry. Many “dry” white wines have a little residual sugar.

The balance between fruit, alcohol, acidity, and sweetness is crucial to wine quality.

A Message from Mike Allen, Treasurer

Fellow Nobles,I’ve certainly enjoyed being elected Treasurer for the last two years. I’ve learned a lot

about the needs of the Temple and its members. Thank you all for your support. Due to the demands of my regular job I will not be seeking re-election this fall. I highly recommend this posi-tion and encourage all interested Nobles in seeking election.

8 | ARARAT SHRINE NEWS NOVEMBER 2012

I’ve written about this Noble before, but it’s been a few years, and nothing ever stays the same. Once in a while, something comes

along that just doesn’t seem possible, so you either ignore or you look closer. I’ve looked a little closer.

Just a few years ago, a couple of Nobles brought a new Noble into Ararat Shrine. The Top Line Signer was Noble Richard Graff, and the Second Line Signer was Illustrious Sir James Lear, Past Potentate of El Jebel Shrine, and Associate Member of Ararat. Their candi-date was Jim McGuire.

Noble Jim McGuire is an interesting fel-low. I really can’t remember ever seeing him when he didn’t have a smile on his face. I don’t know what he did for a living in real life. He’s like a lot of Nobles that I have met over the years, from all over North America. He’s my friend. He’s your friend, too. He’s everybody’s friend.

You might think he’s a salesman, and may-be he was. You might think he’s a politician. And maybe he was. You might think he’s a lot of things, but what he really is, is a fundraiser. He’s a supreme fundraiser. In just eight years, he’s raised over $100,000 for Ararat Circuses.

That’s pretty good!Ararat has had some good fundraisers in

the past. Noble Willie Snell and Noble Roy Barnett come to mind without much thinking. They raised more money than Jim has, but they took a few more years. Both have been visit-ed by the Black Camel, and we are all poorer. Their collections averaged about $12,000 per year, and they did it year after year. And they brought a lot more than contributions to Ararat.

Noble Jim is following his friends, and he’s following them very closely. He might even be out in front, just a little bit. He’s still got some good years coming up. And it looks like this one is going to be one of his best. He may have the record for the most lucrative year ever, but I don’t have the records for every year and every Noble. Let’s just say he’s had some good years.

Noble Jim McGuire is a member of the Greeters, which means that he’s in pretty good company. Greeters, as a whole, are about as committed and energetic as any Potentate could ever desire. They work, they have fun, and they help the Temple and the entire Shrine.

What we have here is a man, or three

men, and a group of men that the rest of us would do well to emulate. If only 1% of Ara-rat Nobles were as productive as Jim McGuire, Willie Snell, and Roy Barnett, it could increase our Temple’s income by almost 50%! If only 10 % of our members were as energetic as the Greeters, we might have 50% more members. If we had 50% more members, what could we do?

So, we have a prescription for a healthier Temple, and we have someone to prove it can be done. Of course, not all of us are capable of contributing to the fundraising efforts as Nobles Jim, Willie, and Roy. Not all of us can create an Arch Production. Not all of us can do most of the things that some of us can do. But we can all do something, and most of us can do more than we are doing. Can we all step up and do something to improve our fraternity and maybe even our world?

Divan Meeting Notes BY STEVE DOWDY

The September, 2012, Divan Meeting was held on Monday, Octo-ber 8, 2012, in the Divan Office at Ararat Shrine. It was called to order at 7:12 p.m. by Illustrious Sir Richard Floyd.

Chaplain Loyd Gentry gave the invocation.Illustrious Sir Richard Floyd said that the list of Hospital Trans-

portation Fund expenses is not yet complete. Illus. Sir Richard also announced that the Temple will be deco-

rated for Christmas on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Work will start at 9:00 am.

He also discussed the Masonic Unity Night on October 17 and the Festival of Champions on October 20.

Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer said that the 2012 Circus is slightly below last year at this time. He reminded Divan members that time is running out for buying Circus Mom and Dad pins and selling ads. About $127,000 has been collected so far. Novelties have been or-dered, and the media advertising campaign, including billboards, will start soon.

The Restaurant reports that revenues exceeded expenses for the month of September, reducing the Year-To-Date losses to about one half of last year’s numbers. Prospects for the year continue to be en-couraging. He thanked the Divan members for their help at the recent MMA event.

Noble Wayne discussed the Circus advertising campaign. Assistant Rabban Maurice Camerlynck reported that the Fall Swap

Meet was successful, showing a profit. He thanked all those that helped during the event.

High Priest & Prophet Clarence Kirby reported on preparations for the 2013 Swap Meets, saying that the search for a new location is progressing. No problems are foreseen.

Oriental Guide Steve Johnson reported that last month’s misunder-standing over Circus collection sites has been corrected.

Treasurer Mike Allen questioned the number of meals for Bingo

workers provided by the restaurant. After a short discussion, every-body agreed that the number was reasonable.

An open discussion of our HVAC maintenance contract started, with no resolution and no new recommendations. That discussion morphed into a general discussion of finances, during which Chief Rab-ban Wayne Spencer moved to eliminate the Temple soda pop sales trail-ers at the Swap Meets. The motion passed.

Recorder Dan Smothers said that we now have 280 Nobles that have not paid 2012 Temple dues. He discussed requests for Remission of Dues, and reported that there were eleven requests for demits and fourteen petitions for a cold sands ceremonial.

First Ceremonial Master Nick Baldi suggested that noble Steve Dowdy be asked to make the pictures of the new Nobles at the upcom-ing ceremonial. The suggestion was accepted. The ceremonial was discussed. Noble Nick also said that the credit card machine at Bingo had met with great approval, and that Bingo revenue is up. Overall, the Bingo games are looking good.

Second Ceremonial Master Randy Berry noted that the Festival of Champions, October 20, has enrolled 32 schools, which will bring 86 busses and 120 cars to be parked. Start time is now scheduled for 7:46 am, and the end is foreseen to be late.

Director Jim Waggoner was absent.Marshal Henry McDaniel noted that the Temple is equipped with

programmable thermostats that are all located in the restaurant office. He suggests that those thermostats should be relocated and re pro-grammed so that they can be adjusted to address current usage.

Captain of the Guard Jerry Grimes discussed developments at sev-eral clubs. He noted that several defunct clubs have supplies stored in the Temple that don’t need to be here.

Outer Guard Butch Pugh discussed his schedule. Our parking lot has been repaired by an “unknown” crew, using

materials provided by an unknown supplier. In the same time frame, the new projection screen was installed by an unknown worker. These “unknowns” deserve our thanks, but they prefer to remain unknown.

Chaplain Loyd Gentry told the Divan that we should be pleased by our relatively low dues, since Rotary Club dues are now $250.00 per quarter.

Chaplain Loyd then gave the benediction. The meeting adjourned at 9:06 pm.

Illustrious Sir Richard Floyd called the October, 2012, meeting to order at 7:37 PM, October 10, 2012 in the Frank S. Land Ballroom.

Assistant Rabban Maurice Camerlynck in-formed the Captain of the Guard that the Poten-tate was about to open Ararat Temple for busi-ness, who, in turn, informed the Outer Guard.

Captain of the Guard Jerry Grimes reported that our Temple was under a double and trusty guard.

Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer looked around and informed the Potentate that our Temple was free from jeopardy as there were none present save members of our order. The Potentate replied that “It is well.”

Oriental Guide Steve Johnson prepared the Altar.

Chaplain Loyd Gentry remembered our No-bles who had been visited by the Black Camel and gave the invocation.

The Legion of Honor presented the colors. The assembled Nobles, led by the Chief

Rabban, recited the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance. Illustrious Sir Richard suspended the meet-

ing for a presentation by Noble Kenny Schick and his family in memory of his late wife, Carol.

The Minutes of the September meeting were not read due to a previous motion waiving the reading of minutes for the entire term of Illustri-ous Sir Richard.

Recorder Dan Smothers announced a photo contest for Nobles, sponsored by Shriners Inter-national. He also announced that funds remaining in an account of the disbanded Computer Shrine Club had been discovered and transferred to the Temple General Fund.

Recorder Dan then read seventeen Petitions for Creation. He read two requests for Permanent Remission of Dues, and one for One-year Remis-sion. All petitions and requests were approved.

Treasurer Mike Allen gave the Treasurer’s Report, which showed that, for the month of Sep-tember, expenses exceeded revenues, but, for the Year to Date, Temple revenues exceed expenses. Restaurant expenses for the year still exceed in-come, but the numbers are much better than last year.

Noble Ian Ramage, operator of the Temple concession trailer at the Swap Meets, donated the proceeds from the Fall Swap Meet to the Temple General Fund. All of the labor associated with operating that food trailer is donated, as is the use of the trailer.

The Harem Shrine Club made a donation in memory of Noble Jim Runyan.

Noble Carl Baxter made a donation because Noble Steve Untrif had bought a new air condi-tioning system from his company.

The Grandview Shrine Club made a dona-tion to help pay for shirts for Candidates at the Fall Ceremonial.

The Greeters paid for a banner at the Circus. The Legion of Honor presented a new Unit-

ed States flag to the Temple. The Richmond Shrine Club presented a sou-

venir mug from the 1976 Imperial Session that was held in Kansas City. The mug was donated by Noble Neal McCullough.

No visitors were present.Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer reported that

the Circus fund raising efforts are going good. Ads are coming in now. Billboards will be up

soon, and you should have seen them by the time you read this. The Sunday evening performance will be dedicated to the Hispanic communities of Kansas City, and others will be dedicated to first responders and the military. Chief Rabban Wayne presented a Gift Certificate to the Ararat Restau-rant to Jim McGuire and a Circus Jacket to Mark Koontz. He also announced a work day on Nov. 3 to assemble novelties, and workers are needed.

Chief Rabban Wayne thanked all Nobles for their patronage of the restaurant. He said that the staff is happy, and asked us not to insult them.

Assistant Rabban Maurice Camerlynck said Swap Meets for 2012 are over! He thanked the Nobility for their work, and reported that the Fall Swap Meet was successful. The Greeters con-quered an impossible job in the parking lot, there were no problems. One dedicated Noble volun-tarily took care of the collected trash, and gave the proceeds from sale of recyclables to the Swap Meet.

First Ceremonial Master Nick Baldi said that he expected approximately thirty candidates at our Fall Ceremonial. The entire ceremonial will be held on Friday evening. He told us that Bingo is doing well, but still needs our help.

Second Ceremonial Master Randy Berry discussed the Festival of Champions, which will be in the history books by the time you read this. He told us that he had once won a saxophone competition.

Bingo Chairman Buck Johnson said that Bingo goes on every week, and presented last month’s profits to the General Fund. The players also donated $724.00 to the Hospital Transporta-tion Fund. He also ordered a Circus banner.

Noble Bert Torrey, substituting for Hospital Chairman Ed Stowell, told us that his office has been busy, spending about $24,000 to send one burn patient to Cincinnati. We have transported 24 kids to distant hospitals, and 124 to St Lou-is. Total transportation expenses for the year are slightly greater than $84,000.

Noble Josh Mulkey, substituted for Mem-bership Chairman Rod McGrath, and told us that Blue Springs Shrine Club had made a donation to Masonic Unity Night.

Noble Dick Newport presented an appre-ciation plaque from the Wings of Mercy Tourna-ment and reported that receipts from the Poten-tates Golf Outing are declining. The number of players is declining, and more hole sponsors are needed.

Chief Potentate’s Aide John Nelson an-nounced that November 10 would mark the return of the “Bathtub Gin Ball.” It’s officially called the “Roaring 20’s” Party, but it will feature the original Bathtub Gin Recipe.

Illustrious Sir Richard stepped up to the po-dium and announced that Noble John Nelson will be the Class Honoree for the Fall Ceremonial.

Noble Pete Hickman, took the place of Pa-rade Chairman Don Pittier, reminded us that we are near the end of the parade season. He thanked everyone for their participation.

Please, remember the Shrine Circus Novem-ber 15th through the 18th.

And, please remember that the Temple will be decorated for Christmas on November 25.

The Greeters will hold a party on Novem-ber 2 to honor Noble Jim McGuire, who has now raised more than $100,000 for the Circuses since his first year in 2005. Truly, a Noble accomplish-ment.

Chaplain Loyd gave the benediction and the meeting was adjourned at 9:07 pm.

Harem NewsBY JIM NORMAN, SCRIBE

November is a time to reflect and give thanks for the many blessings that we have. Soon Thanksgiving will be upon us and shortly thereafter Christmas. Be sure and let your fam-ily, friends, and fellow Shrine brethren know how much you mean to them. Even a small

act of kindness or an encouraging word can make a person’s day. Here is hoping all of you have a blessed and enjoyable Thanksgiving.

The illness bug has hit our unit. Vern Hilliard has had two surgeries in the past three months. A full recovery is expected. Delbert Barker, Shane McCray, Clayton Riley, and Norman Jennings have all experienced recent illnesses and checkups. Keep all of them in your prayers.

An additional sad note; Don Kimbrell, my cousin, great friend and a member of the Spring-field Abou Ben Adhem Shrine has met the Black Camel. Don gave a valiant effort but lost his short battle with cancer on September 25th. He will be greatly missed.

The Harem had a busy month in October with the parades, Festival of Champions, Masonic Night, Pub Crawl, and the Fall Ceremonial.

Mike Anderson and his lovely Lady Karen spent part of October on a cruise to Nova Scotia. Here is hoping they had a wonderful time!

The Harem was the third unit recognized by the Temple. Patrol was #1, Oriental Band #2, and the Harem #3. All new members are welcome to join us and keep the proud Harem tradition going strong well into the 21st century.

Mini Model T’sBY SEVE HARGRAVE, SCRIBE

The holiday season is upon us already. We will have a very busy month ahead of us as this is the month for the Shrine Circus at the Municipal Auditorium. We will need all of the mem-bers to work at the circus this year as we have in the past. The circus will be from November

15th to November 18th. We hope to have both of the tables again this year and hopefully business will be booming. Although the circus is just a couple of weeks away, there is still time to get the monies you have collected for the circus in. This is one of the best ways to make money for the unit, and beef up the uniform fund.

Although the parade season is over, the last parade we were able to attend was the Grain Val-ley parade, and we have had fun being at all of the parades, now is not the time to give up getting members. There are still cars to be driven and members to have fellowship with. Let’s all make a concerted effort to one, get new members, and two bring back the members we have not heard from in a while. All are welcome to join in the fun and fellowship of the unit.

We need all of the members to be present at the next meeting of the unit which will be on November 7th in Room One at the Temple. The meeting will start at 7:30 PM. If you want to visit with us, give Director Jared Hargrave, or President Jamie Blackburn a call and they will be glad to set it up for you and your lady. We will be discussing the circus and several other topics that will be sure to have a bearing on the unit for the coming year.

Leawood Shrine ClubBY r W tHoMPSon, PreSiDent • (816-452-7281)

Our next Club meeting is on the fourth Saturday, November 24, 2012. We will not have a speaker. We will elect new officers and adopt new by-laws subject to approval of our Potentate. Among other changes, we will be voting on a proposal to hold meetings every

month on the fourth Saturday.Just as a reminder, each Noble member of Abdallah and Ararat is eligible to be a mem-

ber of the LEAWOOD SHRINE CLUB at the annual cost of $10. We have no uniform requirements, no equipment to buy or maintain. We offer the opportunity

for enjoying social graces while we dine on good food ordered off of a menu (breakfast or lunch). We each pay for what we order.

We will take a final vote on our new by-laws at our November 24th Meeting. Be prepared to nominate your choice for 2013 officers.

The Leawood Shrine Club is open to all Shriners, their ladies and Widows of Shriners. Open Club membership is available for Abdallah and Ararat Shriners. No annual fee is assessed for our Ladies or Widows of Shriners. Meetings are held on the fourth Saturday at the Pegah’s Family Restaurant; 11005 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, KS starting at 11:30 a.m. Breakfast or Lunch is ordered from the menu and served during the meeting.

Thank you for reading our submission.

Warsaw Shrine ClubBY CHARLES ALLCORN

The weather has cooled the lakes down, but things are heating up at the Warsaw Shrine Club. By the time this is printed we will have completed our 1st Annual Haunted Trail. Things are shaping up for a real spooktacular event. Next month I will have more to report on this

event. Our club is renting a booth for the annual Boo Walk for the children. This event has moved from the harbor to the Courthouse Square. We see an estimated 600 little ghosts and goblins on Halloween night. What a great way to present our club and participate in this wonderful com-munity.

As we head into the holiday season we will serve our bingo players Thanksgiving Dinner on November 24th. Come down and enjoy a free turkey dinner and try your luck with the bingo balls that evening. You may leave the club full of turkey and your pockets full of dough. We wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving. Say a prayer for our Shrine surgeons and hospital staff on this special day. We are proud of the miracles they perform each day. I am proud to be a Noble, and when I share how the Shrine works, I get so excited talking about how this great organization can give children a chance in life. If you are in the Warsaw area stop by and say HI. We would love to visit with you.

On September 21st Noble Kenny Schick’s Lady Carol went to be with our Lord. Carol was very supportive of Kenny, Shrine Hospitals, and the Warsaw Shrine Ladies. Our club will miss Lady Carol and her supportive efforts. Please keep the Schick family in your thoughts and prayers.

Northland Shrine Club NewsBY BOBBIE WHITE, PRESIDENT

Hello Nobles and Ladies. If you are a Northlander we need YOU. We are a great bunch of guys with a WONDERFUL wives group who meet once a month for good food and fel-lowship.On October 2nd we had our regular meeting at the VFW in Claycomo (right there

beside Stroud’s). We started the evening at 5:30 PM with a social hour and then at 6:30 PM had an excellent beef and noodles dinner with several salads and dessert. Wow, what a feast! Next month please come on out, enjoy a meal with us and have some great fellowship.

Prior to dinner Noble Vice President Bert Torrey led us in prayer and then Noble Dave McLaughlin led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Then our wonderful wives group led by Bev Cunliffe-Owen held their drawing for a gift certificate to the Texas Roadhouse Restaurant. The drawing was won by the lucky (but wounded) Barb Newman. Thanks Ladies for all your efforts.

President White opened the meeting at 7:15 PM. We were then advised that Everett Diebler has some health issues and is in Pleasant Valley Manor. Please keep him and Isabelle in your thoughts. We then had a very short business meeting. We have had to postpone our birthday cel-ebration and will try to get a new date set at the next meeting. Also, ELECTIONS will be held at the next meeting. You can’t defend yourself if you aren’t there and I can hear the whistle blowing in the distance. LOL. If you are interested in a leadership position please come next month and let us know. We always need good people to steer us in the right direction.

Noble Silvers informed us that since we no longer needed to be out front with our float at the Circus the Mounted Guard has requested our assistance to sell programs; something different and inside out of the cold. If you can help please come on down and let’s try something new. The Circus is November 15th through the 18th.

Our Ambassador Shawn Robinson then filled us in on upcoming events at the Temple includ-ing the fact there is always a need for help on Thursday nights at Bingo, and the Provost really need help. Please see Neil Cowan if you can be of assistance to them. He reminded us to please try and support each other’s functions. If you can attend another unit or club’s dinner or dance please do so. We have to take care of each other. He then informed us that the restaurant seems to be turn-ing around and making a profit. That is excellent news. If you are down that way be sure to stop in and try it out. Also, Shaun still has plenty of Circus Mom & Dad pins. If you don’t have yours yet or just want another set (you do get Crown Jewel points for the purchase) please give him a call.

Our Divan Liaison Officer Wayne Spencer then gave us more information on the Circus and during his discussion we decided to purchase a banner for the Club. Our Chief Rabban seemed pleased with our decision. He also advised us that help was needed with the Bison Run on October 28th which would yield Circus Credits and Crown of Honor points.

Thanks for coming to visit us Shaun and Wayne. We appreciate your input. If any new noble wants to come visit us we welcome you and your Lady. We will even buy

your dinner the first time and pay your first year’s dues for the club. So stop by and visit with us.We truly miss not seeing many of our old friends from the club. If you haven’t been to a meet-

ing in a while come on back and see us. We miss your company and need you to keep our club active and functional.

Noble President White also asks if you can please make it to the Temple Meetings and wear your Northland Shirt or Fez.

Again, if you want some good food and want to meet some good people come on by our next meeting, Tuesday November 2nd at the VFW in Claycomo. Come join us for dinner before the meeting and visit with old and new friends. Hope to see you there!!!

NOBODY TOLD ME!By, Steve Dowdy

I went to the Potentate’s Ball last month, but it was too late for me to write about it.It wasn’t too late to get the pictures in thepaper, but I couldn’t write fast enough.

We’ve always liked the Potentate’s Ball, probably because Jerri likes to get dressedup, and when she’s happy, it’s easy for meto get happy. Besides that, wearing a tuxe-do makes me feel like James Bond! Ofcourse, it’s not the getting beat up twice inevery movie that I like to imagine, butthere’s enough other cool stuff to keep myinner Walter Mitty quite happy.

This time, the ball was a masqueradeparty. We only wore masks on our faces, unless you count the James Bond outfit. Ithought that would be the silliest thing Iever did, but I was wrong. I was reallywrong! I was great! Shriner’s wives arebeautiful anyway, but the air of mystery

added something special. Then, the Nobleslooked like some kind of royalty in theirmasks. I didn’ t have much trouble identi-fying anybody, but it was fun to pretend.

The decorations were certainly impressive, and the food was outstanding. I’m sure thatsomebody got something he didn’t like, butthat’s the way the world works. It’s reallydifficult to prepare good food for that manypeople, and it’s even more difficult trying toserve that many people, keeping the foodwarm and not dropping a plate in anyone’s lap.

Then came the band. Asmall band fromJoplin, of all places. As far as I know,Joplin has never been the music capital ofthe free world, but with this band, they’vegot a pretty good chance. The band wascalled “Diversity,” and it was appropriate. They played stuff that the old guys like meenjoyed, and they played stuff that the several

young people in the attendance really liked. There were several “kids” at the ball,

some of them were family of the Divan, some were young Nobles and Ladies, andsome were sons and daughters of Nobles.Whoever they were, they danced andlaughed and behaved politely while havinga lot of fun. Some of them even dancedwith Nobles old enough to be their fathers, and at least one young lady talked one ofour dance divas into giving her dance les-sons. Lady Eva Horrell seemed to be hav-ing as much fun as her student. It was greatseeing such a diverse group dancing to aband called Diversity. Can’t you just pic-ture them telling their friends that those oldpeople really know how to have fun!

It taught me that we can attract youngmen to the Nobility, and we can enjoy beingaround each other. That means a lot to our

fraternity. Too many young men look at usand think that they have nothing in com-mon with us. My own son, a Noble him -self, doesn’t like to come to our parties anddances because he doesn’t like “our music.”We need to find common ground, and itwas there at the Potentate’s Ball.

I think a lot of the credit must go to theFirst Lady, because I just don’t seeIllustrious Sir Kevin putting all of thattogether by himself. But, with LadyDianna’s help, and guidance, he threw ahelluva party! They’re quite a pair!

If we, the Nobility of Ararat Shrine, cancontinue in that tradition, we are going tohave a fantastic year. We CAN have fun whilehelping our kids, and it’s time we did so.

Lafayette County Shrine ClubBY RON ELLING, SCRIBE

The Lafayette County Shrine Club met Thursday, October 11, at the Victorian Peddler in Lexing-ton for a delicious fried chicken dinner with all

the fixings. President Delmar Dothage welcomed As-sistant Director of Uniformed Units Tim Rechterman and his Lady Linda, Director of Shrine Clubs Char-ley Swafford and his Lady Rose, and Ambassador Curt Karnes and his Lady Susan along with 24 others in attendance as he called the meeting to order.

Bernie Miller gave the Treasurer’s Report. No-ble Miller also reported that approximately $9000 was made on the Swap Meet.

President Dothage encouraged members to buy Circus Mom and Dad pins to help support children to be able to attend the circus. The Circus will be held November 15-18 and members are encouraged to help. The banner has been misplaced so a new one is being made. Members need to be thinking about election of officers which will be held in November. New Shriners are needed to replace others who are no longer with us.

Ambassador Karnes announced dates of upcom-ing events that will be held at Ararat Temple and parades that will be held in various towns. He also reported that approximately 100 children have been sent to the Shrine Hospitals with one sent by Air Am-bulance to Cincinnati’s Shrine Hospital.

Director of Shrine Clubs Charley Swafford talk-ed about the transportation budget for getting chil-dren to the hospitals. Congratulations were extended to Noble Swafford and his Lady Rose on their 60th anniversary to be held in November.

Assistant Director of Uniformed Units Tim Re-chterman extended congratulations to Noble Dothage on being a Lieutenant in the Provost. He also thanked him for his 3 years of leadership.

The next meeting will be held Thursday, No-vember 8.

Jackson County Shrine ClubGreetings from the little club that could!! This month’s watch-

word is elections, no, not those in Washington, but here at JCSC. That’s right, at our regularly stated business meeting

on Tuesday, November 27th at 7 PM; we will elect officers for the coming year. Please plan to attend so you can cast your vote.

Other activities in November: Saturday 3rd, the Hillbilly Re-union returns to JCSC. On Friday 9th Fun-Cor Family Fun Nite from 6:30- to 9 PM. Dinner will be homemade meatball calzones with a side salad for $5.00.

Speaking of Fun-Cor, our Royal’s Day at Kaufman Stadium was a huge success. We had over thirty couples and an army of kids in attendance. On the parade front, the American Royal Parade was a blast. We had ten bikes present, along with the debut of Noble Joe Wheelbarger’s sidecar mini bike. At the Grain Valley Parade we had seven bikes on the road. As of this writing we are still looking for-ward to the Smithville and Independence Parades. More to follow…

Well, that’s all for now. Remember, JCSC where the dues are cheap, but the fun is priceless.

Blue Springs Shrine ClubBY FRED “FINGERS” HARLE P.P.

Hello all you fine nobles and lovely ladies out there. We invite you to join us for fun and fellowship at the Blue Springs Shrine Club. We meet on the 4th Monday night of the month at the American Legion Hall in Blue Springs, MO. We have a pot luck dinner, so

don’t forget to bring a pot with something good to eat in it. The club always provides the entrée which is cooked up by Past President Noble Bill Fickle of Side Pockets reputation. Believe you me; it’s better than the best gourmet Restaurant you’ve ever pulled a chair up to!!!

At our last meeting President James Gargotta banged the gavel on the head table and proceeded to get the action of the club’s business started. First we were privileged to salute the flag of the good ole USA and repeat the Pledge of Allegiance; following which President James called upon our club’s Chaplain Noble Donald Meinsen to get all of us started on the right track prior to the next club activity, which was time to eat. Don’t worry folks, there is always a surplus of food, no one ever goes home hungry.

Our guests for the evening included Asst. Rabban Maurice Camerlynck, Jr. and one of the nicest Shriners you will ever get to know, Noble Ambassador Bud Higginbotham, who travels all the way from the resort town of Warsaw, MO.

We were privileged to have as our guest speaker, Col. Ted Stillwell who presented a pro-gram based upon the Civil War as it relates to Jackson County and the area’s surrounding ter-ritories. Col. Ted was so knowledgeable he could tell you where every bush and tree was and how they figured in the battles. You should have been there.

Noble Bob Turner and pretty Lady Merlena came out of the woodwork and were with us this evening. It sure was good to see Bob improving. Also, Noble Louie Sohn and lovely Lady Connie joined us. Noble Louie is on the mend following his recent back surgery. It was really super to have you back with us.

Our three newest members and Ladies were with us this evening: Noble Ivan Braley & Lady Theresa; Noble Ray Lingrel & Lady Frances and Noble Bob Fasl & Lady Dianna. These are three super couples that will add greatly to our club.

Noble Mark (Tony) Kenna & Lady Toni joined our club this evening. Welcome to the best club in all of Shrinedom.

If you were members of our BSSC you could have joined us for an excursion to that fabulous city, Weston, MO. We had a chance to visit the Museum, McCormick’s Store, Weston Café, Pirtle Winery, American Bowman Café and the many shops. For our final place we went to O’Malley’s Pub, which is located in an ancient winery buried deep underground. The fea-tured entertainer was an Irish Singer by the name of Bob Reeder. Many of us sang along and after a few drinks we got better or louder?? Some of us sang all the way home and the rest of us were exhausted from a wonderful day of walking around Weston. I’ve included a few pic-tures of our trip with this article.

I hope that everyone was able to attend the Texas Hold’em Tournament on October 21st at Side Pockets. This is one of our really successful fundraisers.

Congratulations to Noble Glenn Means and Lady Mary Jane on their 50th Wedding An-niversary. May you have many more years of wedded bliss together.

Hope to see all of you at this same spot next month.

Provost NewsBY BILL HUFFMAN, SCRIBE

Noble Bob Zolotor was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on October 7, 1946. His Dad was a sign painter but Bob decided that being a sign painter wasn’t his calling.

While attending Southwest High School Noble Zolotor was in the C.O.E. Program and worked for Commerce Trust Bank in the mail room. After graduation in 1964, Bob enrolledat M.U in Columbia, MO. His major was in Criminal Justice and Bob graduated with a B.A. Degree in 1968.

In 1970 Noble Zolotor joined the Kansas City Police Department and was assigned to Traffic, where he would remain for the next ten years.

An opportunity came along at that time and Bob hired on as the Assistant Director of Secu-rity at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City. He was also involved in a Management Training Program and was the Manager on Duty on the night the horrible sky walk collapse occurred in 1981. Not long after, when the Hyatt Regency reopened, Noble Zolotor received an offer to relo-cate to Orlando, Florida, opening the 5 Star Rated Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress as the Executive Housekeeper.

When someone shows great management skills in a specific field, competitors become aware of them and make offers to bring them on board. This was the case with Noble Zolotor, and the offer was substantial. Responsibilities increased too. Bob was given the job of opening The Inn at Mill River in Stamford, Connecticut as the Executive Housekeeper, with the responsibility of hiring and training the entire staff of Housekeeping and Laundry personnel, including his own replacement. Stamford, Connecticut has 14 Fortune 500 Companies headquartered there, and the cost of living was high. Bob figured it would take his salary to pay the rent, his wife to pay the utilities and the kids would have to work to buy the food, so Bob went back to Orlando where his family still lived.

In time Noble Zolotor became a single gentleman, and made the move back to his hometown, Kansas City.

They say that timing is everything. When Bob returned to KC the Harrah’s Casino was just being built, so Bob hired on as a member of the Security Team and opened Harrah’s as a Lead Security Officer. After 2 years Bob wanted to become a dealer, but Harrah’s felt he had too much knowledge of internal operations to allow that.

Once again, timing is everything. The Flamingo was now getting ready to inhabit KC. Bob was hired and attended “Dealer’s School” and learned the skills necessary to deal any Casino game, but Craps was his favorite. However, the Flamingo had a problem hiring qualified Security person-nel, so even though a trained qualified dealer, Bob was enlisted to assist the Security Department until they could hire and train sufficient staffing. Six months later, Bob actually became a real, live dealer.

In 2004 Bob decided to take what he calls a “Sabbatical”. It was time to back off for awhile. One evening Noble Zolotor received a call from Illustrious Sir Ben Kenney. They were acquain-tances from Bob’s days with the K.C.P.D. He was informed of a position he just couldn’t pass up. Even though Bob wasn’t looking for work, Illustrious Sir convinced him to at least come for a

“talk.” Almost 8 years later Noble Zolotor is still employed with Allied Barton Security, and he’s a happy camper.

Noble Zolotor joined the Blue Lodge in 1995 and became a Shriner that same year. He is Past President and Director of the Pipes & Drums, as well as Past President of the Provost Club.

I enjoyed being a part of this story and my visit with Noble Bob Zolotor.

Until next time, God Bless.

Sedalia Shrine ClubBY RON HINKLE, PRESIDENT

Greetings to our members and all of our friends in Shrinedom. May our Divine Creator impart a special blessing to each and every one of you. For all of you who support this club, we of the Sedalia Shrine Club thank you. This club’s survival has depended on “you” and “you”

have stepped up to meet its needs for 2012. Pat yourself on the back and know that you deserve all the kudos that can be heaped on you.

Our Fun Kor has one of its largest parades under its belt for 2012 and Versailles provides an audience of more children than any of our parades. It’s a pleasure and a feeling of pride to see all those little faces watching you. It’s a special feeling when you get thank yous and thumbs up for what you do for Children’s Hospitals. We ride for children and believe us when we say “The Pleasure is Ours.”

Our Breakfasts have really turned out to be success stories in themselves. A team of dedicated volunteers have really come through in a big way the first Saturday of every month. This has provided a much needed financial boost to insure the longevity of the Sedalia Shrine Club and by doing so, our ability to support disabled children. We ask all of our members for your help and your patronage to keep these Breakfasts alive.

Remember our Bar is open Tuesday through Saturday starting at 3:00 PM. On Sunday we open at noon during football season. Come in and join the camaraderie.

Beginning November 1st the Pro Shop will be closed for assistance. The Golf Course will still be open for members who wish to play.

If you came to our October Breakfast you enjoyed a breakfast donated by Sedalia Food & Vending. If you are around David & Stephanie Schied and Mike & Janet Smith give them a big “Thank You” for their donation, time and efforts for our cause. This President thanks them very much.

Our October meeting was held at the Temple on Monday, October 1st with all officers and several members present. We were again honored to have our Liaison Officer, First Cer-emonial Master Noble Nick Baldi with us. He enlightened us on the upcoming Ceremonial

and Pub Crawl which is to be held on Friday, October 26th, and also the Cruise Night and Car Show which is to be held on Friday night October 19th at the Temple starting at 5:00 pm.

Noble Butch Johnson thanked all those who worked the recent Swap Meet and for the first time in a few years we had beautiful sunshine to make it a success.

It was good to have our past Director and Past Potentate Illus. Sir Noble Don Price with us who just three weeks ago had major heart surgery at the Veteran’s Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. He and his son Richard will be traveling to Washington D.C. with other Veterans on November 7th to visit the World War II Museum. It was also good to have our Past Director Noble Dennis Williams with us.

With our parade season winding down we participated in the American Royal Parade on Sat-urday, September 29th and in Grain Valley on Saturday, October 6th on a very chilly morning with the temperature slightly above freezing.

Our get well list includes the following: Noble Marty Hopkins who is hospitalized for treat-ment; Lady Winnie Reiss who will be having a pacemaker installed in early November; Noble Vaughn Hosmann who was recently hospitalized for his sixth heart stint; Lady Frances Woodward who has just received word that the serious fall she encountered also broke her hip bone and is to

have surgery to correct it; Noble Woody Woodward who has had blood pressure problems that have improved with medication; Lady Opal Price who broke her arm a few weeks ago and is doing well; and Illus. Sir Don Price who is remarkably recovering from recent heart surgery. We wish them all good health and a successful recovery.

Pictured below in this issue we highlight the 1933 Ford Roadster who won the first sanc-tioned stock car race held on August 26th, 1933 in Elgin, Ill. By the end of the 203 miles 33 Fords took all of the first seven spots. The only rivals that came close were the eighth place Plymouth and tenth place Chevrolet. A Ford was also ninth.

Our reason for highlighting this vehicle is that it is now owned by Dana Mecum of Mecum Auctions who for the past 15 years has rewarded us greatly by having us drive cars through his auctions held twice each year in Kansas City. These funds have allowed us to contribute greatly to the Children’s Hospitals and also the Transportation Fund each year. We thank Dana Mecum who has given us this privilege. We also thank all of our members, their friends and relatives, other unit members including Divan Members who have assisted us each year. We look forward to the next upcoming auction to be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday December 6th, 7th and 8th at Bartle Hall, and will appreciate your continued support. For information and driver passes contact Past Director Noble Gary Seger at 536-0708. The news article provided me covering the 1933 Ford stock car was given to me by our Past Director and Vice President Noble Ben Kropf.

Your circus ticket funds will be due by November 1st. Be sure to mark your check for “Ole Cars.”

Word has just been received that our President Noble Mike Aulgur fell while working on a ladder. Further details will be provided later.

Ladies Oriental Shrine of North AmericaTarrara Court# 83 Independence, MissouriBY Jackie Burke • 816-810-3843

Going through change and growth? Spencer Johnson wrote a great little book that relays an amazing way to deal with change in your work and in your life. Some of you may have read it. The little book is titled “Who Moved My Cheese?” The book is a story about change that takes place in a maze where four mice look for

“Cheese.” Cheese is the metaphor for what we want to have in life, whether it is a job, a relationship, freedom, strong friendships, recognition, or even an activity like support to Shrine Hospitals.

Each of us has our own idea of what Cheese is, and we pursue it because we believe it makes us happy. If we get it, we often become attached to it. And if we lose it, or it’s taken away, it can be very stressful. The maze in the story is where you spend time looking for what you want. It can be Shrine and the relationships you have with the Nobles and Ladies of our Ararat Shrine Center and Tarrara Court.

There are parts of all of us in the four mice looking for the cheese. The four mice in the story are: Sniff, Scurry, Hem and Haw. They represent the simple and complex parts of us, regardless of our age, gender, race or nationality. Some-times we act like SNIFF - who sniffs out change early or SCURRY - who scurries into action, or Hem - who denies and resists change as he fears it will lead to something worse, or HAW - who learns to adapt in time when he sees changing leads to something new, better and different.

Whatever parts of us we choose to use, we all share something in common: a need to find our way in the maze and succeed in changing times. The handwriting on the wall: 1) Change happens - they keep moving the cheese. 2) Anticipate Change - Get ready for the cheese to move. 3) Monitor Change - Smell the cheese often so you know when it is getting old. 4) Adapt to change quickly - the quicker you let go of the old cheese, the sooner you can enjoy the new cheese. 5) Change - move with the cheese. 6) Enjoy change - Savor the adventure and enjoy the taste of new cheese. Be ready to

change quickly and enjoy it again and again - because they keep moving the cheese. We are an amazing Organization!! We don’t want to become extinct, so we must keep moving the cheese. We need to embrace and welcome

the new members and at the same time, don’t forget about the Nobles and Ladies who have been the backbone of our Ararat Shrine Center and Tarrara Court. We learn from our past so we can plan our future and find that NEW CHEESE!

Big Thank You to Chief Rabban Wayne Spencer, Joe Snopek and the Circus Committee inviting Ladies from Tarrara to help work a novelty booth at this year’s Ararat Shrine Circus.
