Scholarships Awarded Each spring, the Alumni Association holds a special ceremony to recognize the graduating seniors who receive Association-administered scholarships: • The SHS Alumni Association Scholarship is awarded to a high school senior who has
made positive contributions to SHS through good citizenship and participation in extracurricular life.
• The Robert Defino-Class of 1955 Scholarship, named in memory of the class president, was established to recognize a student who has achieved success in high school through hard work and involvement in the school community.
• The Kitty Viscardi Memorial Scholarship, honoring the late teacher and speech coach, is awarded to a senior who’s been an active member of the SHS Speech & Debate Team.
Marc Rischitelli joins the SHSAA to present the scholarship named for his grandfather and former Superintendent of Schools, The Lester “Pop” Dyer Award for Citizenship. Each winner is asked to invite to the awards ceremony a mentor whose positive influence has helped the student achieve success. We Grant Wishes Winners of the Alumni Association’s grants were announced in November. The awards will make it possible for students to attend competitions, offer workshops, produce plays, and contribute to local charities. Two of the grants will help classes purchase technology to enhance learning. Each year since 1995, the SHSAA has funded grants for charitable or educational projects that involve or benefit SHS students. This year’s winners were congratulated at a presentation in the high school’s Anthony J. Bent Presentation Room on November 8. Speakers included Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Sawyer and SHS Principal Todd Bazydlo. Maria Smith assisted Grants Chair Sandra Lucas in presenting the awards.
Association President Judith L. Donahue presented the Educational Television Studio and instructor Maggie Korab with the Partnership Award, for promoting the mission of the SHSAA through their video production “All About Alumni Grants.” Other grant recipients are… • National Art Honor Society—supplies for

presentations • History Club—participation in National History

All-Class Reunion a Success October 15, 2011 saw the biggest turnout yet at the Alumni Association’s annual All-Class Reunion. The Class of ’71 had decided to celebrate (40 years!) at the Alumni Social, as the classes of ’69 and ’70 had done before them. Classmates agreed that it was an easy, affordable, and enjoyable alternative to the traditional reunion…Check out those smiling faces in the photos on the Association website! In addition, dozens more graduates from many classes met at the
Italian American Victory Club to catch up with old friends and neighbors and to make new acquaintances. It’s become an annual tradition for many graduates! Please join us on Saturday, October 13, 2012, 7-11pm, for hors d’oeuvres, music, and fun. Let us know if your class is interested in holding its reunion there, and we’ll work with you to make it an extra-special evening for your classmates.
