Marshall has lived in the City for most of his life, and began a successful career as a Realtor in 1959 after opening his own real estate company: Marshall Realty. His business blossomed: today he has 20 employ- ees and boasts of owning one of the few non-corporate real estate companies on the Peninsula. Soon after, Marshall became an active mem- ber of the City Government. He was eventually elected Mayor of San Bruno and served in this position for more than 12 years. He also served as former District Governor for Lions Dis- trict 4-C4, former President San Bruno Lions Club, Life Membership San Bruno Chamber of Commerce, Founding Member of Penin- sula Bank of Commerce, former President of North County Board of Realtors. Bob Jr., Marshall’s son, followed in his father’s footsteps and has also become an active San Bruno community member. Bob Jr. is now an agent at Marshall Realty and is a member of the City of San Bruno’s Planning Commission. He moved down the street from his father and currently resides there with his wife, Marilyn, and two children, Marion and Bobby III. Marshall’s story is not an uncom- mon one in San Bruno. It is one of those cities where people can still walk down the street and recognize their friends. When families leave on vaca- tion, their minds are at ease knowing their neighbors will watch out for their home. San Bruno is a community in the truest sense. Residents genuinely care about their neighbors and about their homes. “The neighborhoods are well-kept and maintained by residents,” said Marshall. “Homeowners work to pre- serve their properties.” “It’s a great place to live, with great people,” said Mayor Larry Franzella. “I’ve lived here almost all my life and I love it.” San Bruno is located on the Penin- sula, 12 miles south of San Francisco and immediately adjacent to the San Francisco International Airport. The City is easily accessible via BART and Caltrain. For those who prefer to drive, San Bruno is located between two major highways: the 101 and 280. With a population of around 40,000, San Bruno is small enough to have that small-town feel with all the benefits of living near a big city. Its strong community makes it an ideal place to raise a family. Not only do parents enjoy the family-driven atmosphere, but they also love the opportunities available to their children. San Bruno parents send their kids to great schools. “Our school is system is excellent,” said Mar- shall. “Whether a public or private school, the education is always top-notch.” Weekends and after school, kids and grown- ups alike take advantage of the parks and recreational areas. San Bruno has 18 parks covering 71 acres and 4,700 trees. Highlights include more than 20 sport fields for soccer, baseball and football players. The City also organizes team sports and other recreational activities for the entire family. “We probably have one of the finest park systems on the pen- insula,” said Marshall. For those who prefer being indoors, the recently remodeled Shops atTanforan makes a great weekend hangout spot for the whole family. With more than 100 stores and restaurants, the mall is a safe (and covered!) place to meet friends and spend the day. In 2006, Tanforan will expand even further by opening a state-of-the art cinema. Downtown San Bruno is another fun place to go shopping and spend the day. “The downtown area has a lot going on,” said Mayor Franzella. “It is also undergoing ongoing improve- ments, including the installation of a new clock tower on San Mateo Ave to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Club of San Bruno.” San Bruno residents also enjoy the fact that like their city, they too have room to grow. The City offers res- idents the opportunity to upgrade into larger houses as their families and spacing needs grow. “Many fam- ilies are able to move from smaller to bigger homes and still stay in San Bruno,” said Marshall. Booming business in San Bruno also means families can afford to make these moves. The Shops at Tanforan, downtown business dis- trict and SFO airport have opened up hundreds of new job opportuni- ties for people with a wide variety of different skills. Entrepreneurs have especially been successful at harness- ing tourist business from the airport. The variety of housing opportu- nities, matched with growing business opportunities makes San Bruno a solid community with lasting resi- dents.
