Chapter Fundraising Ideas

2014

Donor requests – Make requests to local donors for support of your chapter via personal

request, letter-writing or email. Local business associations, chambers of commerce and

volunteer associations have lists of members that are a great resource for identifying prospective

donors and sponsors. Make a list of potential donors, develop a case for support and materials to

collect donations and pledges, identify TeamMates chapter board members or volunteers who

can assist with making calls to these donors and send our letters or start making phone calls to

schedule donor visits. TeamMates mentors can also be a source of funding using this method.

Ask Event/Barn Party – A great way to introduce new donors to your organization is by

inviting them to an “Ask Event.” Fondly known as “barn parties” at TeamMates because they

often take place in their host’s barns, these events are hosted by a local TeamMates supporter(s)

who helps build a guest list of folks who know little about TeamMates but have the capacity to

financially support the local chapter. The host(s) should cover the costs of food and drink for all

guests. Guests should be invited to come enjoy the evening, which can include mentor/mentee

testimonies, an introduction to TeamMates from a board member or the host and potentially a

few words from Tom Osborne (depending on his availability). During the program, the host

makes an ask for financial support of TeamMates and pledge cards are distributed among the

crowd. Detailed materials are available on the Coordinators Playbook or by contacting Jen

Benson at [email protected].

Candy Machines – TeamMates partners with Frank Haverkamp of FMH Holdings to place

candy vending machines in companies and offices across Nebraska and Iowa. Frank is growing

the business rapidly and is interested in placing new machines in offices and business buildings

where there are at least 30 employees and/or 150 walk-in customers. Ideal locations are factory

or machine-shop-type buildings. TeamMates chapters receive a percentage of the vending

proceeds through quarterly disbursements based on the machines located in their chapter’s

geographic area. For Omaha metro area chapters, proceeds are distributed based on machines

where the chapter facilitated the placement. Quarterly disbursements range from $10 to $1,800

depending on the number of machines located in a chapter’s territory and the sales volume of

those machines. To learn more about how your chapter can become involved in candy machines,

contact Frank Haverkamp at [email protected].

Coffee sales – TeamMates has partnered with LaRue coffee to offer a fundraising opportunity

for chapters interested in selling bags of Husker-licensed coffees. Chapters will receive proceeds

of $4-$5 per bag sold. TeamMates does not allow youth to sell products but local adult board

members and volunteers are welcome to sell coffee. Contact Jen Benson at

[email protected] for information.
