Dominating the outside static display is an example of Jordan’s

latest helicopter. The mighty Mil Mi-26 ‘Halo’ is the world’s largest helicopter, and the Royal Jordanian Air Force has ordered four of the latest Mi-26T2 version. The first was delivered to the RJAF here at Amman-Marka airport on 17 January this year.

King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau signed the contract on behalf of the armed forces on 17 April 2016. The Mi-26 is built at the Rostvertol plant at Rostov-on-Don, part of the Russian Helicopters company. In production since 2015, the Mi-26T2 represents a major reworking of the original Mi-26T, and features an all-new BREO-26 digital avionics suite that permits flight operations at night and in adverse weather, with a gyro-stabilised electro-optic sensor, Navstar/GLONASS satellite navigation and five-screen flight deck. The new avionics suite allows the Mi-26T2 to be flown by a crew of just two, instead of the original five, although a third crew member is added if operations are to involve underslung loads.

D-136-2 turboshafts that can each develop up to 12,500hp (9,325kW) at emergency rating, the Mi-26T2 can lift 82 troops or loads of up to 20 tonnes, carried either internally or as an underslung load. The rear ramp and clamshell doors allow large loads and vehicles to be admitted to the capacious hold. Such capability makes the

Mi-26 a versatile tool for both military and civilian/government purposes.

At SOFEX, the Russian giant dwarfs another new helicopter for Jordan, which is displayed alongside. The Robinson R44 Raven II is from the Golden Eagle Aviation Academy, which was established at Amman-Marka in 2015 to provide

world-class military rotary-wing training in partnership with the RJAF. Instructors are former RJAF personnel and the academy can provide training in special forces support and other combat roles. The air force itself bought eight R44s equipped with Garmin and Aspen avionics for service with No. 5 Squadron at Mafraq.

The enhanced software will provide more efficient and comprehensive integration of security sensors and systems.

(KADDB) (Hall 5) is showing its latest Al-Mared (8x8) armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) in the armoured personnel carrier (APC) configuration.

For a high level of cross-country mobility, the Al-Mared is based on a Tatra chassis, to which is fitted an all-welded steel body, claimed to provide ballistic protection up to STANAG 4569 Level 4, but with growth potential to Level 5. The lower part of the hull is of the traditional V-type to protect against mines and improvised explosive devices.

Air Force’s Iomax/Air Tractor AT-802i two-seat turboprop light attack/surveillance aircraft, which are based on the airframe of a crop-duster. The AT-802i on display is the first of the six-strong fleet to have undergone an upgrade that increases the aircraft’s weapons-carrying ability.

Jordan received the six aircraft in 2015 as a gift from the United Arab Emirates. The UAE had purchased a batch of 24 AT-802i aircraft from US company Iomax, which outfitted them for border patrol and light attack duties. is typically around 25 tonnes, including the crew, weapon station, fuel and other onboard equipment.

In addition to the commander and driver, the Al-Mared carries eight dismounts who can rapidly enter and leave the vehicle via the large power-operated ramp in the rear of the hull. For a higher level of crew survivability, the dismounts are seated on blast-attenuating seats in the rear troop compartment, facing inwards.

The Al-Mared is the largest wheeled AFV to be developed by KADDB and complements its Al-Wahsh (4x4), which is already in production and service in Jordan. Al-Wahsh is also based on a Tatra platform and, in addition to being used as an APC, has been developed for other roles, such as a weapons carrier with anti-tank guided missiles and a 105mm artillery system.

Getting to grips with an ever-changing operational

environment calls for a diagnosis of hybrid warfare in the global grey zone. This was the topic and message from several speakers at the ninth biennial Middle East special operations conference, MESOC, which took place on Monday, 7 May.

As keynote speaker, Lt Gen Mahmoud Freihat, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff of the Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF) – Arab Army noted, “We are challenged in terms of time, political alliances, technical abilities, financial challenges and social strains.”

The grey zone is the space

between peace and war. He believed many grey zones are created without the majority of actors realising in a timely fashion that they do exist. “Those operating in a grey zone will ensure that opposition actors are wary of reacting too forcefully, which could lead to them being perceived as the aggressors.”

The complex nature of hybrid warfare prompted Jordan to start reforming and refocusing the JAF. At the same time, there was a realisation of the need to co-ordinate and partner on a regional and global level. According to the commander of the King Abdullah II Special Forces Group, Col Sufian Al Slaihat, a misdiagnosis of the problem had led to policy and strategy gaps. “Military

procedures are not the answer, but part of it,” he said. For future special forces the adage will be: “Adapt and change – or you will fail.”

Gen Raymond A Thomas III, commander of US Special Operations Command, likewise said special operations forces were never more relevant than today, but must evolve. He highlighted the importance of alliances and partnerships, the sharing of information and interoperability.

His sentiments were echoed by other speakers, notably Staff Col Mohammed Al Salmy, deputy commander of the UAE Special Operations Command, and Gen Kaleb Al Kanani, commander of Iraq’s Joint Operations and Anti-Terrorism Force.

Oshkosh Defense (Hall 6, Stand A609) has brought its

Special Purpose All-Terrain Vehicle (S-ATV) to Jordan for the fi rst time. This lightweight 4x4 vehicle has been designed to provide special forces and other users with a platform that can be rapidly adapted for a wide range of battlefi eld missions and allows both internal and external helicopter transportability.

Mike Ivy, vice president and general manager of International Programs at Oshkosh Defense, said: “With its superior levels of off -road mobility and manoeuvrability, as well as its ability to disembark aircraft with primary weapons ready to fi re in 60 seconds or less, the S-ATV enables special forces units

to quickly deploy with stealth and agility in the most severe environments.”

The S-ATV typically has a crew of fi ve seated in the middle of the vehicle, including the

commander, driver and gunner, who operates the roof-mounted 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun. It has integrated mounting provisions for a variety of weapons and ballistic protection

options. Its modular design allows the customer to rapidly reconfi gure seating, upgrade protection options and utilise plug-and-play C4I capabilities. A high level of cross-country mobility is provided by the combat-proven Oshkosh TAK-4i independent suspension system.

The power pack consists of a Duramax V8 turbocharged diesel developing 275hp, coupled to an Allison 2100SP six-speed automatic transmission and two-speed transfer case. Its engine cooling system allows for continuous full-power operation in ambient temperatures of up to +54° C (130°F), such as those encountered in the Middle East.

According to Oshkosh Defense, the S-ATV can climb a gradient of 70 per cent, has a maximum road speed of 145km/h and a road range of up to 800km at a speed of 110km/h.

(Hall 6, Stand B614), a specialist in remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), with more than 800 aircraft produced for customers around the world, is working with Middle East customers to provide a higher return on investment for its aircraft by enabling a Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) capability.

The MUM-T uses the RPA to provide surveillance information to ground forces and to manned aircraft like helicopters. “By adding the eyes and ears of the RPA to their battlefield picture, pilots in manned aircraft can grow the reach of their situational awareness and ultimately, improve mission capabilities,” said Jim Thomson, regional vice president of international strategic development.

While the RPA platforms share many attributes with manned aircraft, they are differentiated by a key factor,

namely persistence. According to Thomson, some of its aircraft can remain airborne for up to 42 hours, while continuously performing ISR and collecting data – without the concern of pilot fatigue or a need to refuel.

With an eye on safety and reliability, GA-ASI constantly improves its designs and enhances the human-machine face. “We are now designing our aircraft with certification and airworthiness in mind, so we are meeting and even exceeding the reliability standards for manned aircraft,” Thomson explained. “This includes fault-

tolerant control systems and triple-redundant avionics system architecture.” These features have enabled GA-ASI to design for airworthiness to gain routine access to non-segregated airspace, i.e. civilian airspace. An example is the MQ-9B SkyGuardian, part of the UK’s Royal Air Force Protector programme.

Thomson also highlighted the range of important payloads, enabling the aircraft to be used in military and non-military applications, including law enforcement, border patrol, fire detection, maritime patrol and resource monitoring.

Persistence pays off

Fast intercept craftspeed hull forms, including offshore racing and patrol craft, to create a high-performance patrol boat specifically tailored to the unique environment of the Middle East.

The VFI is the next evolution of a proven hull form. It features shock-mitigation systems that enhance ride quality to deliver maximum comfort in rough seas. With a cruise speed of 60 knots and a sprint speed of 70 knots, the VFI delivers multimission capabilities and exceptional manoeuvrability.

The 21m craft features a hybrid aluminium/composite design, two aft gun mounts and

forward-facing remote-operated small arms mount. Suspension seats keep crew and passengers mission ready and drive-by-wire propulsion and steering controls deliver a high level of control.

Vigor’s international sales portfolio has been growing in recent years, particularly in the Middle East. In 2016, it delivered two 19m all-weather pilot boats for the Port of Duqm Company SAOC, Oman, to support the port’s expansion.

In addition, Vigor is building two RB-Ms as part of a foreign military sale to Jordan, six additional RB-Ms are on order for Bahrain’s coast guard, and the company is in talks with other Gulf nations for this proven vessel.

It has taken four years since the tentative agreement for the acquisition of 22 NH90

helicopters was signed in 2014, but the stubbornly elusive contract was finally signed and sealed at Qatar’s biennial Dimdex defence exhibition in March, in the presence of Italian defence minister, Roberta Pinotti.

The initially agreed numbers have also increased and the Ministry of Defence will now acquire 16 NH90 TTH (tactical transport helicopter) for land operations and 12 NH90 NFH (NATO frigate helicopter) for naval mission. Also included in the contract are options for six more of each variant, and an eight-year support and training package for aircrew and technicians and associated infrastructure. Qatar will also receive 16 Airbus H125 light single-engine helicopters in training configuration for operation by the Qatar Armed Forces Air Academy. The overall programme is valued at more than €3 billion.

The Qatari NH90 NFHs will not be equipped for the anti-submarine warfare role, but will have the ENR maritime surveillance radar, a Safran electro-optical system, and Elettronica DETE-90 electronic

will be responsible for final assembly and delivery of the NFH helicopters from its Venice-Tessera facility in northern Italy. Deliveries of the helicopters are expected to begin before June 2022 and continue to 2025. Their arrival will mark a major modernisation and expansion of Qatar’s transport/naval rotary-wing force, which currently uses the ageing Westland Commando in both roles.

Qatar becomes the 15th country to buy the NH90, bringing the total order book to 543 helicopters, with 350 delivered to date to 20 customers. The only other customer to date in the Middle East is the Royal Air Force of Oman, which

operates 20 NH90 TTHs.In January, Lockheed Martin’s

Sikorsky Aircraft business unit secured a $194 million foreign military sales (FMS) contract for the supply of 17 multimission UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters to Saudi Arabia, of which eight are destined for the Saudi Arabian National Guard Forces, and nine for the Royal Saudi Land Forces Airborne Special Security Forces. Deliveries are scheduled for completion by the end of 2022. The UH-60M is designed to support combat assault, combat search and rescue, command and control, external lift, firefighting, medical evacuation, VIP transport and armed missions.

The United States Marine Corps has awarded a contract to New Jersey-

based Airborne Systems North America (Hall 6, Stand A601) for the Enhanced Multi-Mission Parachute System (E-MMPS).

Equipped with an Airborne Systems proprietary Hi-5 canopy

intelligence/support measures system. A contract of undisclosed value has also been signed with MBDA for the supply of Marte ER anti-ship missiles to equip the NFHs.

The twin-engine, medium-size NH90 helicopter programme is managed by NHIndustries, a consortium of Airbus Helicopters (62.5 per cent), Leonardo (32 per cent), and Fokker (5.5 per cent). Leonardo will act as prime contractor for the programme, supported by the Italian government, and Airbus will be responsible for the final assembly and delivery of the TTH aircraft from its facility in Marignane in the South of France, while Leonardo

and Edge harness container, as well as an attachable military working dog harness, the new system will replace the existing legacy MMPS currently in use.

The Hi-5 features a 5.5:1 glide ratio and can transition to a 1:1 glide ratio with a simple control input using the patent-pending Glide Modulation System, which offers resistance to stall and

allows for the most accurate landings. The E-MMPS features the company’s latest STORM drogue release system.

Airborne Systems’ chief technology officer, JC Berland, said the company will provide all the necessary support to ensure the successful fielding of this new parachute system, including training and commercial manuals.

This contract comes on the back of years of research

and development. As Berland explained: “We are constantly providing the best technology available worldwide, and when that technology does not exist, we develop it ourselves.”

first helicopter pilot training academy in Jordan, has launched its operations and flight training programmes for military and paramilitary cadets, designed to fulfil a rapidly growing demand for helicopter pilots. While its strategic partnership with the Royal Jordanian Air Force has strengthened its capabilities to provide top-of-the-line flight training for the military, GEEA is also planning to add civilian flight training (PPL, CPL).

In addition to its helicopter training, the company has stated that it is ready to provide military training programmes on combat and transport aircraft in full co-operation with the air force, and said that aviation engineering training can also be tailored to military needs.

The academy’s CEO, Maj Gen (R) Nabil Ababneh, points to its team of highly experienced former military instructors, special operations and combat pilots as the cornerstone to providing the highest standards to meet rigorous air force and international aviation

requirements. GEEA, he said, “is the right destination for future pilots who seek excellence in the world of aviation”.

Having high regard for Jordan’s special role in the Middle East,

Turkish company Aselsan (Hall 1, Stand A106) has brought a range of its innovative defence and professional products to the show.

Among these are indigenously designed communication systems, an anti-tank missile system, airborne reconnaissance and surveillance and an anti-drone system. The company is also exhibiting laser and precision guidance kits, ground surveillance radar and jammer systems.

For field agents at checkpoints or ports of entry, a search for

weapons or contraband could be hazardous. US-based Optim (Hall 6, Stand A630) is showing its FreedomView videoscope (FVVS), which enables effective search and seizure in vehicles and hazardous environments, while still offering simplicity and safety to the agents using the equipment.

announced that it is part of a team of companies awarded a new task order by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to develop and operate a satellite payload to aid aircraft navigation, in particular precision approaches to airports without dependence on ground-based infrastructure.

The payload will be part of the FAA’s Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS), which corrects and enhances information provided by global positioning system satellites to give commercial and civilian pilots more precise approach and departure guidance. WAAS

provides safety improvements in the National Air Space and has been operational since 2003. This hosted payload, known as Geostationary Earth Satellite (GEO) 7, is part of an ongoing WAAS constellation replenishment/sustainment effort by the FAA.

Leidos, a global science and technology leader, is the lead company on the task order, which has a four-year development phase, followed by a 10-year operations and maintenance phase. Intelsat General will design, develop and host the WAAS GEO 7 payload, then integrate it into an Intelsat Galaxy 30 satellite being built by Orbital ATK, which is set for launch in the first half of 2020.
