Shout Out to Southern High!
Laura Lynthacum, data manager for the Patriots, sent
this to staff members at her school and Principal Dawn
Madren let me know about it: “Many of you will
remember former student, Derrica Barbee. She
was Homecoming Queen her senior year at SAHS as well
as a lot of other things she participated in here at
school. Well she is homecoming queen again, but this
time at Wake Forest University!”
Shout Out to the ABSS DECA program! On October 27, DECA students from five of our high schools will participate in the second annual DECA
Bowl to be held at Country Club Lanes in Burlington. Students will compete in role-play situations with
local business leaders as judges. Each student gets 10 minutes to review a real-life business situation
that is related to either Sports and Entertainment Marketing or Retail Management that they learn
about in business and marketing classes. Winners will advance to the District 5 DECA competition in
December to compete against high schools from other surrounding counties. Good luck to the Cavaliers,
Eagles, Patriots, Bulldogs and Warriors as they compete to bring home awards to their DECA programs!
Shout Out to Graham High! Principal Charlotte Holmes was proud to announce these impressive results from the GHS Voc Ed
Department and instructor Rebecca Meacham for their first time ever in this particular competition.

Shout Out to ABSS Drop Out Prevention Counselors! Dr. Alisa McLean sent me this teaser, so maybe I should call it a Tiny Shout Out or a Pre-Shout Out…..
"Early calculations reveal that ABSS has decreased the dropout rate AGAIN... Stay tuned!!” Official
numbers will be coming in soon from DPI, so wait and see for the big announcement. A big SALUTE to
all of our Dropout Prevention Counselors for their tireless efforts!

Shout Out to Andrews Elementary and the Andrews Roadrunner Rockers! Mary Bergenser, school counselor at Andrews sent this picture of a Sea of Pink that the Pink Panther
would be proud of: “This year the staff at Andrews Elementary is not only participating in the Relay for
Life event in May, but will also be doing monthly events to raise awareness of cancer with our students!
This month in celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness, we had a "PINK IS MY NEW ATTITUDE" day. All
of the staff and students were asked to wear pink and donate money to receive a pink ribbon to wear
throughout the day! We had a great turnout! Friday we will be selling "PINK" sno cones for 50 cents.
All of the proceeds from both events will go towards our Relay for Life team, the "Andrews Roadrunner
Rockers".
Shout Out to Broadview Middle and Red Ribbon Week! AP Pam Henline sent in this list of activities for very busy Bobcats: “The Bobcats will be involved in lots
of activities next week as we celebrate National Red Ribbon Week and encourage everyone to be drug
and alcohol-free. On Monday, students will sign a Drug Free Pledge and enter a door decorating
contest. On Tuesday, they will wear crazy socks for “Sock it to Drugs” Day. On Wednesday, everyone will
wear red to signify that they pledge to live a drug-free life. Thursday is “Put a Cap on Drugs” Day when
you can wear a hat to school for $1 that will go to support the DARE program. Friday will wrap the week
up with “We are not afraid to say NO to drugs” day where students can wear school-appropriate
Halloween attire and celebrate the week with a special performance in the gym by the Bobcat Floor
Warriors at 3:00 p.m. Officer Valencia is hosting a Red Ribbon Week Trivia Challenge where students
can answer the fact of the day to win free movie tickets.” Activities for the Bobcats are being
coordinated by Gina Holmgren, Drug and Violence Prevention Specialist for BMS, Graham Middle and
Woodlawn. Great job!

on a great quest. We want
to receive a postcard from

you find yourself traveling
to another state, please
take a minute and drop a
postcard in the mail to us.
On the card, please tell us
one thing about the state.
Or, if you have family or
friends in other states,
please ask them to send us
a card. Ask them to tell us

Shout Out to Newlin Elementary and the Running with Love 5K Run/Walk event! This will be a great event. Gretchen Fisher, visual art teacher at Newlin, and her 11-year old daughter
Sedona are organizing a 5K Run/Walk event along with the help of Newlin staff, to raise funds to build a
memorial garden at Newlin in honor of 2 students. On Saturday, October 29, from 9 until 1, you can pay
$5 to participate in the marathon, or just dance for $1, or enter the costume contest. Or you can buy a
hot dog and drink and enjoy the festivities. Most of all, you can help them raise funds for this wonderful
garden to celebrate the young life of first grader Andy Sanchez who died in a car accident in August and
fourth grader Shareak Currie-Gunn who died in 2009 from a respiratory illness. Please spread the word
to others to help them make this garden grow!
Shout Out to Graham Middle! GMS Principal
Intern Melvin Diggs
said: “On
Wednesday,
October 19,
students, families,
and faculty
celebrated the
academic successes
of the first nine
weeks. All students
attended the first
annual Awards
Ceremonies.
Students were
recognized for
personal
achievements in
their classes,
A/B Honor Roll, and
Straight A’s. Twenty-five students (pictured) got all A’s on the first report card of the 2011-2012 school
year! Mrs. Faucette challenged all students to set goals that surpass successes from the previous nine
weeks. Congratulations on all of your achievements, Falcon students and a special thank you to Falcon

Shout Out to South Graham Elementary!
There are homecoming parades with floats, there
are Fourth of July and Christmas parades with floats,
but nowhere have I ever seen parade floats inside
our school buildings! Until now, that is. South
Graham hosted the first-ever States of the Union
Parade this week for the entire school! Fifth graders
cruised the halls with their floats while students in
other grades lined the halls and searched eagerly to
find clues to complete their scavenger hunt about
the 50 states. Check it out—it is just too cool for
school. This would have stopped traffic on Main
Street in Graham! Kudos to the SGE Fifth Grade!
Is Mrs. Price hiding inside one of those boxes?

Shout Out to the
Southern Middle
Band! The Southern Middle
band students had the
best field trip ever on
Tuesday. They traveled
to UNC-CH for a rare
opportunity to be
immersed in university
band culture. Derek
Breshears, Wildcats
band instructor, took
his students to observe
a UNC Wind Ensemble
rehearsal at the Kenan Music Building after a tour of the Tar Heel Basketball Museum. Then the SAMS
band went to work at Navy Field with the Tar Heel Marching Band. Students “shadowed” a Tar Heel who
played the same instrument and marched with them in formation during practice. In the photo below,
you can see Sierra Herold “holding her own” in the Tar Heel drum line. Mr. Breshears is pictured with
Matt Savage, UNC’s drumline instructor. They marched together in the world-famous USC Trojan
Marching Band (that’s Southern California, not South Carolina) “back in the day”.
Shout out to Red Ribbon Week and High School DREAM Teams! Next week to celebrate Red Ribbon Week, our high school DREAM teams will be on the road visiting
elementary and middle school students to remind them of the importance of staying drug, alcohol and
tobacco free!

Another Shout Out to
Broadview Middle!
AP Pam Henline was full of good news
this week about great stuff happening
at her school.
The photo at left is a quilt of different
countries, music, and culture from Ms.
Bondurant's ESL classes as they
celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month.
The photos below show Mr. John
Kilsheimer (7th grade ELA teacher)
who wanted to show his support for
breast cancer awareness. So, Ms. Burrell
the art teacher painted his head!
Students in Ms. Burrell’s art classes painted lots of signs like
the one pictured at right and posted them around the
school.
Shout Out to Eastlawn Elementary! Don’t forget about tomorrow’s (Saturday) yard sale to help
send 17 AIG students to summer camp at NC State! Get up
early tomorrow and go see what you want to buy- be there
at 7 a.m. to get the best stuff and support this wonderful
event supported by the entire school.
