Old Fashioned Play

For most of human history children played in small or large groups and roamed more or less unsupervised engaging in freewheeling imaginative play. They were pirates, princesses, characters from the wild west or fairies ........ They improvised their own play regulated it and set their own rules.

During the second half of the 20th century, children were provided with specifi c toys for play and predetermined scripts, instead of using a tree branch and string they were bought a sword or light saber. No need to use their imagination and the play became shorter the less the children had to think and problem solve and the more reliant they became on adults to provide stimulation. Toys replaced the need to think and they continue to inhibit imagination.

All the time spent playing make believe actually helps children develop a critical cognitive skill called executive function. The central element to this skill is self regulation. Children who are able to self regulate can manage their emotions and behaviour which enables them to focus and learn at school.

Play allows you to make plans and try novel approaches and we can discover talents we didn’t know we had. Columbus was at play when it dawned on him the world was round. Watson and Crick were playing with the possible shapes of the DNA molecule when they stumbled on the double helix

If you think back to your own childhood what do you remember most about playing, was it when you were playing with pre defi ned toys or was it when you with

groups of friends ‘messing about’, dressing up, making dens, playing in the woods or roaming in groups on bikes.

We don’t live in a world where children are alone for any length of time or where they are able to wander at will with their friends. We in early years settings have a responsibility to provide the resources, the support, the opportunities and environments that will enable children to develop these skills of self control, imagination, high level thinking, exploration, investigation, movement, problem solving and through them the joy of learning. These skills are the biggest indicator of our children’s future success and the most effective way to learn them is through play.

Westmount Music Half page advert and advertorial

Shout Directories caught up with Westmount Music after they celebrated their fi rst year birthday in September. With another busy year already underway, we found out what they might have in store for this Christmas.

Shop owner Paul Coombes continues, “It’s been a good year all round and somewhat of a blur to be honest. We’ve learnt a lot from listening to our customers so as well as running the shop on a day to day basis, we have spent a lot of time introducing initiatives such as our in-store tutor room, instrument rentals and a new music club and school rewards scheme”

The recently launched loyalty membership scheme enables customers to earn points, for both purchases and rentals, for themselves and for their chosen participating school. These points are redeemable in the shop and on an exclusive member website. The shop have pre-registered several hundred members since the summer and a number of local schools are already benefi ting from the scheme, “it rewards our customers for their loyalty and patronage and at the same time supports local schools. We like to think it’s a win-win situation for all involved”.

However there is no time for Team Westmount to rest on their laurels. With Christmas just around the corner, they intend to offer the best possible choice of products, from stocking fi llers to something more substantial from Santa’s sleigh, along with their particular brand of excellent family friendly service.

So if you want to give something musical this Christmas, why not try Westmount Music soon and beat Santa to all the best buys!

Solution?Hypoxi-Vacunaut Therapy is a groundbreaking approach that the world’s media are hailing as the fastest way to guaranteed inch loss and cellulite reduction. Vacuum therapy along with very gentle cycling within the Hypoxi L250 trainer accelerates the transport of fat enriched blood to the muscles within the target area during the treatment, meaning that fatty acids are burnt off as fuel.

What results can I expect?Hypoxi-Vacunaut Therapy increases body confi dence with noticeable long term results. It burns off stubborn fat deposits, improves poor connective tissue and generates a non surgical tummy tuck, buttock lift, skin rejuvenation and toning. It is claimed to be the number one way to combat cellulite.

Where can I do this?At Sanus Hypoxi Studios in Maidenhead where Sally MacLeod runs a friendly, yet discreet studio and clients receive individual attention and a holistic ‘lifestyle’ health screening prior to commencing a Hypoxi programme. Sally’s clients have included not only well known celebrities, but also doctors and medical practitioners, who understand how the body works and recognize that Hypoxi Therapy can offer a natural, non invasive way to reduce both cellulite and fat from stubborn areas.

I am embarrassed to show my thighs - How can I reduce ugly cellulite?

Seasonal Top Tips:

The grass cutting should be slowing down somewhat now and the garden centres will be supplying bags of lawn feed that is different from the spring feed. The difference is it contains very low amounts of Nitrogen, and as we know Nitrogen promotes leaf growth which is not wanted this time of year. So, don’t use your Spring feed in the Autumn! The Autumn feed also contains high levels of Phosphorus and Potash, which is good for building strong roots and healthy plants, thus preparing them for the Winter, so all in all a good idea.

Autumn is a very good time for dividing herbaceous perennials, and there are 2 good reasons for this. Firstly if plants have become too dense and are outgrowing

there space they can be dug up, split up and the smaller plants re-planted. Secondly the rest of the plant can be used to increase stock and be planted in other areas of the garden. It is sometimes nice to have the same plants repeated in 2 or 3 area as when they fl ower your eyes are drawn consecutively one to the next as it provides continuity throughout the garden.

Favourites:

Something for the rock garden or front of a border or even naturalised in grass for this time of year is the Autumn Crocus. Not to get this mixed up with the Spring fl owering Crocus (Iris family), this species is known as Colchicum autumnale, and actually belongs to the Lily family, and will fl ower in Autumn. That should confuse the neighbours.

Another good late fl owerer is a shrub also with blue fl owers that will give a real show, called the hardy Plumbago. (Ceratostigma willmottianum) The fl owers are small but the abundance of them make up for it. The shrub itself only grows from 2-4ft high, but beware although this is called a ‘Hardy’ Plumbago, in cold winters the stems get knocked back with the frost. So after this happens cut the stems hard back and the plant re-grows from the bottom.
